Good evening all -

Thought I'd stop in for a quick bite to eat while I'm watching Da Bears take it to the Saints. My prediction is for Da Bears v. the Colts. Speaking of Da Bears, looks like they just scored their 2nd TD of the 4th qtr - 32-14!

Anyway, on to some real stuff....such as trains! I finally got around to uploading my photos to my railimages account and thought I'd share some with you all. Not sure off the top of my head when I took these, but I'd venture to say it was late Oct / early Nov 2006. So, sit back, relax and enjoy!

Well, time for me to get some things done around the apartment before I head back to work tomorrow. Looks like the Drew Brees and the Saints just threw an interception.

Take care!

Evening, Chloe - I'd like to try that Italian shrimp that Jeff has, please, and a glass of wine, too. That shouldn't set JP's VISA back too much, right?? Wink [;)] Thanks, JP! Dinner [dinner]

Not much MRR'ing this afternoon - having to straighten, reorganize, and toss some of the clutter. Down side is, I only have until next Monday (a week or so away) to get it to the landlord's liking (and I'm not totally clear how picky he's gonna be). As Bill the Cat would say... ppfffffttttt!Tongue [:P]

Yesterday morning I got the car's oil changed, and then in the afternoon had 'em drain a pint out of me (local Red Cross blood drive). I did get some more cars and stuff for the RR yesterday, too - three undecorated P2K 10K gallon tank cars (Timesaver kits), a couple of Ernst re-gearing kits for my Athearn 4-axle engines, and an Athearn truck and trailer (but not as nice-looking as either Sue's or JR's). Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Sue, I would have to Sign - Ditto [#ditto] about the remarks on your “l’il ol’ corner”(not trying to start a ditto tree!) - looks great! Nice truck, too (though I know next to nothing about them). If you do the rest of your layout like that corner, it'll be excellent!

Dick, the weatherguessers here hadn’t completely made up their minds what we were supposed to be having, but last night’s predictions were that north and west of Cape would be getting a mix, and we probably might or might not get anything - depending on how the storm tracks! Springfield, MO (and the southwestern corner of Missouri) probably got hammered again. They’re still thawing out the ice and such from the last go-round.Shock [:O] It turned out that the night was barely cold enough for the little snow we had to stay (and it melted before I got up this morning). So we lucked out - compared to some of you east of us.

Ryan - my condolences on the Saints' game. I noticed that Mike isn't broken up, since he was for da Bears... Wink [;)] Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^] On your Dremel question, are you sure you want to get a cordless model again? I’m still using my 1970’s vintage corded one and it runs fine (variable speed). But then again, it was sitting in my storage unit for about a dozen years until couple of years ago when I got my MRR stuff out. I know some people like using the flexible shaft, too.

Fergie, sorry to hear about the code hassle. I hope you’re on good terms with the building inspector. Maybe you could just *happen* to be grilling an extra steak when he/she comes by, and see if he/she wants to stay for dinner? (Just a thought - didn’t say it was that good of one...)

DerJohn, the pics of your ‘sea foam’ look pretty good! Thumbs Up [tup] I might have to track down your directions page and save ‘em for if I ever get the urge for some strong waves. But then again, I’d have to change the locale of my RR, since I doubt that there’s much seafront in the Four Corners area of the Southwest... Wink [;)]

Oh, on that track plan, my idea was that that section would be at one end of whatever plan (unless the main continued past the end of the yard to the right). Had the turntable there to turn any steamers, and would use the yard for any re-arranging of the freight cars and caboose for the outbound. I’m just playing around with the idea so far. I think that section’s about 2 feet by 8 feet for HO scale. Since I started this yesterday afternoon, I toyed with putting a second line in there so the main could continue off to the right (and also so the yard would have a switching lead). Here's what I came up with:

But as I said, just an idea. I'm doing like some others have, and will get around to adding other modules as I get more space (like maybe after I move to a new place).

Blessings,

Evenin all, half time, a barley pop Floe,

Jim, yes  I am in kind of a good mood, guess I'll have to buy for RYAN when he comes. Sorry feller, but it wasn't the way the Saints played [they played a good game] as much as the weather the 2'nd half.

Jerry, Don't think they have every thing lined up for the fair yet, but their close.

Back to the train room, now if the Pats can win........

Evening gang: Nothing for me ladies, It's been along day and I'm too tired to eat.

We went out to son John's place and layed out the first piece of his live steam railroad. He wants to get the road crossings in before the drillers come. They will have to build ones that will support there very heavy trucks. Better them then him.

Jeff: Nice job on the clouds. They really look good.

Well I'm off to bed.

Oops - my bad. Jeff, I had thought of writing it earlier (but obviously, didn't) - liked your clouds too. Is that all done freehand (by yourself)? I know one of our guys in the local MRR club has some kind of mask he uses (I think he holds it back from the backdrop a bit, and does it with spray paint, if I recall). But yours look better than his do, for sure! Thumbs Up [tup]

Back out of here for me - maybe see everyone in the morning!

Blessings, and may the team of your choice do well!

Mine are done freehand water-base paint, brushes, chalks and charcoal. That's what 3 years of art classes can do for you.

Mornin, irish Coffee please Floe

Cold n damp ou, we've got a foggy mist out, temp 33, lookng for temps to drop below freezing this afternoon. May be an icey drive home this evening

JP, the layouts looking great. I like those CSX engines, thats what I see here everyday. I saw a different paint schem on one the other day, it was all light grey with yellow CSX letters. Might have still been in primer.

OZ, looks like some progress on the new layout, keep us updated on how it's going.

Yea the Colts won, man I sure hate that. All our local tv comes out IND. and they started in with the bull as soon as the game was over. OH, well at least DA Bears won.

No plans for the day, gonna have kids. did get the retaining walls made and one installed, now waiting on the glue to dry good. Best get on ta chores

Good Morning All,

The fruit bowl and a regular for me please ladies. Well the dust has settled (or are they snowflakes) and it's Da Bears and (gulp)  The Colts ? At least I'm happy for Tony Dungy who has suffered through enough bad playoffs to make anyone nuts and always kept his dignity.

It was simply too cold to get much done in the railyard yesterday so we laid out a few projects to catch up on and I went home to do chores there and get some layout time in. Then of course I had to watch both games. Well most of both games anyway.

Got  to be tough playing outside in cold weather, but that's why some teams fight so hard for home field advantage and it worked to the advantage of both home teams with the Saints hurt by cold weather and the Pats cramping up in the Hoosier greenhouse. It has worked the other way around enough times so no complaints here.

Another busy week here at work and I'd better get on with it.  CUL,J.R.

Good Morning, Diners! Zoe, I'd like one of the chocolate donuts that Bill T. brought in. Yum - still warm. Smile [:)]

Jeff, I like your newest clouds even better. Yeah!! [yeah] You do good work, there, guy! As you said, it helps to have the classes (and the practice that taking them involves).

This morning it's a balmy 36 degrees out - except that 73% humidity and NW wind at 7 mph gives a wind chill of about 30 (which when I head out, will likely feel like the dampish cold we had yesterday). Yup, good day for a coat. But from a peek out the window, no frost to scrape that I see on the car, so that's good.

Better get going - back to work day for those of us who aren't ROF... Wink [;)] Those of you who are, enjoy the extra hour of sleep!

Blessings on your week,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Morning all!

Well, it looks like winter around here finally.  Snowed the other day and its still here.  The lake even froze, though not thick enough to do anything with.

Weather guesser says its going to stay this way for a while.

Here's the current......

And the guesses for the near future.......

Soooooo.............Colts and Bears, huh?  Gotta admit, even though the Colts fought back in a big way yesterday, the Bears looked awful good.

Well, guess I ought to make like I work here or something.  Later!

Oh, and the Breakfast Bar is open if anybody is hungry..........

Good morning everyone, been snowing here lightly off & on since midnight, just enough to cover the roads and make things slippery with a temp of only 19.1F right now. We headed off to AAA to get our pics for our passports, which everyone must have as of today to get into Canada, Mexico, or anywhere else. Then off to the local post office with our forms and pics to send off to the Government, and 4-6 weeks, presto, we can go see Der John and Fergie and Luc, etc., or maybe Ed in olde Mexico. Hey, do we need a passport to get into Missouri to see Cape Jim??

RYAN: I have a rear projection HDTV, a Pioneer, 65", it is 2001 vintage. Great picture, but rear projection TV's are BIG in size. I saw the new DLP TV's and they have a great picture. The CES in Las Vegas just ended, and they had all the latest TV's on display. My recommendation to you Ryan is to go to your local Tweeter store, and check out the various types to see what you like. They also have, in my opinion, the sharpest, most knowledgeable people to explain and demonstrate the features. I find that BestBuy, or Circuit City is not on par with Tweeter for "real" in-depth knowledge of video & audio equipment. LCD gives a great picture for the smaller screens, up to 42: then DLP and Plasma take over for larger screen sizes. There is even a brand new technology out that will use LED's to project the picture. This is REALLY nice because you don't need mirrors, and lenses etc., uses much less power, smaller TV in depth, etc. Of course newer technology will be more expensive at the start, but my next TV will be LED. Right now...I like DLP. Hope this helps Ryan

CONGRATS: Bow [bow]Thumbs Up [tup] As a loyal Patriots fan, I want to congratulate the COLTS for a great game and a record comeback, and best wishes in the Super Bowl. As a loyal AFL fan, I must root for the COLTS!!!!

JEFF: Is that SOS I see on the breakfast plate????? I haven't had that since I was in the Army!!!!

J.R. :  It looks like the warm winter will NOT hold for the big train show this weekend in Springfield. We have a "potential" for a Nor'easter on Thursday into Friday, but the models look like it will pass out to sea south of Cape Cod, but things can change. The big issue will be the COLD...it will turn bitterly cold on Friday night and Saturday & Sunday. Highs will only be in the low teens, and lows at night in the 0 range or below.

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Hi Ryan, one thing to keep in mind choosing a new boob tube is the time you intend spend watching it, an LCD screen has a lifespan of app 40,000 hours, but the back-lite lamps have to replaced in about 15 - 20,000 hours which will cost almost as much as a new screen,

A plasma screen has a lifespan of about 40 - 50,000 hours before noticeable changes occur. and the projector lamps used in beamers and other projection equipment has an even shorter life: maybe some 4,000 hours and these lamps are also quite expensive.

I have a Hitachi 40" plasma that is hdmi ready, meaning you need a HD output DVD player or HD digital tuner, but as there are very little HD programs transmitted in Europe, and HD DVDs are also still rare, so I decided I'll wait untill HD programs are more available before upgrading my tuner or DVD-player. Overall the improved quality even with "normal" digital programs is amazing, and because of the very high briteness of a plasma TV image will not be distorted by reflections of interior lighting and sunshine on the screen.

hope this helps,

cheers

Afternoon Gang: John just brought a gift for Mary Ann, a couple of cats. They are outside cats so  don't mind. Mary Ann went to the doc for here simi annual check-up. He said here BP was up some so changed her med slightly.

I've got to go out and plant the cedar trees that we dug up yesterday. They are very little ones. We have been transplanting cedars for several years now. We're trying to get a wall of cedars between us and all the new neighbors. So far we have about a 50% success rate. I'd better get at it so I'll see you all later.

Jeff: Again, outstanding clouds.

RYAN: just to give you ( and others who may be considering a new TV ) what the life span would be for LCD TV's and Plasma, per Lupo's accurate data:

HRS WATCHING TV/DAY             BACK LIT LAMPS (LCD)

                3                                                 14 yrs ( based on min of 15k hr life )

                5                                                   8 yrs

                7                                                   6 yrs

The LCD screen would last anywhere from 37 years to 16 years, so you would have replaced your TV by then, if for no other reason than technology advances.

HRS WATCHING TV/DAY                       PROJECTOR LAMPS

                3                                                        3.7 yrs  Based on 4KHrs life

                5                                                        2.2 yrs

                7                                                        1.6 yrs

At this time, you can get some real good prices on REAR projection HDTV's. They are bigger, and bulkier, but have a excellent picture, and they give you the best price for value at this time. If "I" where to get a TV "today", and the size was in the 20's or 30's inches, I would get an LCD. If I were buying a large screen TV, I would buy a REAR PROJECTION TV. When the prices and available of LED's hit the market, that is the one "I" will buy.

My second choice would be DLP for today, my friend bought one for Christmas and it is outstanding for clarity and resolution.

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! I just bought two of the rear projection dinosaurs (51" & 52" RCA & Magnavox respectively) and a 42" plasma (Samsung) this last summer.  All were brand new and all have HD built in.  The plasma cost about 50% more for less picture screen.  The LCD had an even better picture but was a few hundred more for the same screen size.  I got my two dinosaurs for $800 each and the plasma for $1200.  I mounted the plasma over the fireplace, so thats why a rear projection unit wouldn't work there.  The upstairs living room and the master bedroom got the big boys.  I'm happy with all of them, but I think the plasma has a sharper picture.
