Good morning everyone,

Good morning. My back is stiff as a board this morning. I guess I pulled a muscle in it yesterday. If that's all it is, I'm lucky. I took a pretty hard fall.

Good Morning All,
A regular and one of Bills donuts please Zoe. It's a balmy 13F here this morning, all the windows in the shop lobby are iced over like privacy glass. I was getting worried winter wouldn't come. I did get the Grinch deflated and put away before he froze his bazutzka off.
Museum work night last evening. We went through all the excess HO to sell off at the Big E along with some O. Mostly old LL and Tyco and Bachman. Lots of Sante Fe - must be the countries most popular road. The N gauge guys haven't shown for a while so nothing going on there so no progress for Jerry. Put some ballast down in the display yard as well but I'll need a technique other than soaking as it's too big an area. Probably I'll switch to brushing on white glue in the bare areas and adding the cinders over that. Since I'm still working at the end farthest away from the viewing area I can experiment a bit, no?
Der - how about some fine white sand in a lower level of water for bubbles? adding some tint between layers is working well but the colors need to be muted even more than usual.
Back to work - waiting on tether hooks to find out if the Jetta head is cracked. We couldn't find anything obvious in the head gasket or oil cooler yesterday and I now hear that the oil supply passages in the head have been known to crack. (Shudder) German parts are not cheap so I'm hoping we're ok but expecting not to be. Hope you all have a goodun" and stay out of the weather. Our prayers for Fergie - he really is having it rough. CUL,J.R.
Mornin'!
Got my girl with me at work today. She drove me to work for the first time. That was kind of hair raising! She just got her permit and she tackled morning rush hour. Gotta hand it to her though, she's brave! Gotta go to the airport later and she wants to drive there and back. If I don't speak to you all again, it's been nice knowin' ya!
Well, mighty chilly here to start the day!
Sue, I actually had a clue that I might see something good yesterday. I saw a work train the day before go by with ties and a few Hi-Rails in the area. Thats why I grabbed my camera on the way out the door......just in case. I can't believe the pics came out as good as they did as dark as it was.
LSWrr, so far this is the fifth crane I've seen in the area, though two of them are in a museum. Check them out.........
There's yesterdays crane:
There's the crane in Anderson Yard:
The one in Hawthorn Yard that I can't find my pic of.
And then the two at the museum:
Oh hi Chloe! How about Biscuits and Gravy, Scrambled Eggs, Hash Browns, and a cornbread muffin.......and coffee, thanks!
Mornin, ham, eggs, biscuts n gravey, n coffee please Zoe,
Suppose to be partly cloudy today with clouds increasing in the afternoon, high in the low 30's another clold one here.
The Pats are gonna have to play like the old black n blue teams from years past to beat Indy. If they can keep the offense off their rythum, they'll stand a chance to win. I'm sure they can do it.
JERRY, thanks for the info, but you didn't have to call them. I thought maybe you knew already. The Rockome meet is April 21-22 for the spring show.
DICK, One of the bad things bout a quake on the New Madrid, is not olny the area affected, but the fact that 99.9 of the building or infrastrucute are not built to any earth quake standards to speak of. The results would be felt world wide.
PC, thanks for the crane pic. I haven't seen on of those in a spell.
LEE, thanks for the video links. Me and KC liked them.
RT, Thanks for the update on Fergie, sure hope'n things line up betters for'em. We'll be thinking of him.
GMT, Did ya'll get the turn table rebuilt at the museum? I was just wondering. Jetta's had a bad habit of cracking heads, I've worked on two and one thing I learned, don't get a used one. Without taking it and it getting checked.
Best get back to the honey-do's or else, I'll be in deep with the CFO [again]

Good morning noontime everyone.. been so busy with the wood stove and repairs to anemometer up back on the weather station, that the morning just flew by. It was 4F here this morning for a low temperature...way up north in Caribou and Fort Kent, it was -18F. The temp right now is 12.8F, Dew Point is -8F, the wind is 5 mph from the NW gusting to 12 mph, and the wind chill factor is 2F. As I was repairing the weather station up back, 8 deer wandered by about 100 feet away......they saw me and never spooked...too cold I guess......strange to see deer on the move at high noon too.
JEFF: Get a heating pad on your back before it really stiffens up.
Time for lunch!!! I see French meat pie on the menu...

I'm sure there's some somewhere. I would think Portland would have one.
Oh, and time for lunch!
Zoe, Boneless Buffalo Wings please!
And a Moxie!
Hey, Pc. That's looks pretty good. I'll have an order of those too.
Brr!!..it was down to 0F here this morning, much more like the temps we were expecting before this crazy winter started. The wind is just plain nasty. Definitely hot chocolate weather, thanks TiptonBill! Here’s the view from our bathroom window when I got up. That’s sea fog made of ice. The off shore wind thankfully is taking it away from us.
JR: White sand…hm…I’ll have to think about that if the sawdust doesn’t work out. Preliminary test last night dabbing Flex Paste in about “Dry Brush” amounts onto the back of a wave form look pretty promising, as does the same technique to represent the spent surf and run back on a beach.

This looks like a sidewalk cafe type place? Hows the food and the prices? I model HO with alittle bit of everything on it. Steam is 1 in my book followed closely by first gen. diesels F's SW's NW's All Alco's. I am building a fairly large layout, and right now I have yet to settle on 1 roadname I like them all, some more then others.
I look forward to chating with many of you in the days to come.
Welcome I'm the odd ball around here Imainly do O gauge I do have one HO scale but it also is 3 rail (Marklin) as for roadname make one up and just look at it as you lease engines from all the others instead of buying them.
Bunch of great guys in here mainly HO and n scales there is another O gauger that drops in and I believe there is a G or 2 in here also.
Again welcome and keep in touch

Hi Jeff, Earlier in the week you mentioned an automotive device called the "Tornado".
I have a 1992 Ford pickup, 302 V8, recently rebuilt ( bored .030 over) so it's actually about 317 or 318 cubes now. It has about 7,000 miles on it since rebuild.
I get about 15 miles per gallon.
Do you think the "Tornado' would help the gas mileage?
I looked at the website.
It looks easy enough to install.
I drive a 52 mile round trip to work and back home everyday, so some better mileage and less fuel used would help.
Gas just fell to just below $2 a gallon here yesterday, is around $1.98 to $1.99 a gallon now in northeast Indiana.
Good luck with "Phase II"
Ed
Ed: Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I've been pretty busy. Yes, the tornado should help you. It's a snap to put in. It just pops in and has absolutely no moving parts. Just make sure that the arrow points in the direction of the airflow toward the engine.
I got the car back from the shop today. That wasn't bad, a one day turnaround time, considering the amount of work it needed.
Cost for labor: $495. That's a lot cheaper than another good car.
Good evening everyone.....a balmy 11.2F here at 7:30, so I guess we might go below "0" tonight. The woodburner is getting a workout these past two days, and it looks like it will continue for at least two more weeks, maybe more if the jet stream pattern holds.
Did some RR planning today, a perfect day for that.
Here is a 3rd grade test that one of my grandkids told me about to "test" me.....hmmmmm I wonder I will do.....want to try your luck against 3rd graders guys?
http://www.pibmug.com/files/map_test.swf
This is a timed test, if you know your states, you should pass, if not, Cloe and Vicky will throw you out of the Diner.
JEFF: How's your back tonight?
Evening Gang: I don't know what is going on but I can't load page 34. I keep getting the page cannot be found notice. So I'm doing this on page 33. There's more then one way to skin a cat.
Well I didn't go to work today. Would you believe it snowed? The weather guessers said there would be snow south of us but none here. They blew it again as we have 1.5 inches on the ground and it's staying. Mary Ann and I spent most of the day taking care of the animals. Our son John came over and helpped me put out a couple bales of hay. Later we watched a video of Westside Lumber Co. We just love those shays. After that we went over to the track and were going to fire up the live steamer, but the water was frozen so no way to get water into the boiler. We haven't run in the snow since I got the steam locomotive. Maybe Saturday. Yes it may snow again Friday night and Saturday morning. So where's Noah? Opps, I mean Snoah.
Tomorrow Mary Ann is supposed to go to the doctor but that will probably be cancelled. Since I've allready got the day arranged to be off, I'll be off.
Of course nothing has been done on the MRR. I have been thinking about the addition though. I've got to get the basement cleaned out abit before I can do much of anything.
Well I'm going to go and check out somethings on the net.
How about that. I'm on the top of page 35. So have at it gang.
Good Night All
Grayfox: The back is much better tonight. Only a twinge of pain now.
Well, I had to delete the scene information from my backdrop threads. It seems the place I got them has changed their copyright information, effective today. Now it's a "limited" copyright freedom, but I'm hanging on to the backdrop I made.
Good evening folks: Hard time getting onto the internet tonight. Connection keeps going down, and then connecting at an astounding 9.6kbps!!!!
I’ve now settled on the way to model foam and spray for my ocean scenes. The Flex Paste and sawdust mix was an encouraging start, it looked quite good (but needs white paint because the wood stains the paste). Then I remembered that I had an old “party light” low grade fibre optic flashlight thing. I cut the fibres up and put them in the Magic Bullet® until they were quite fine. (Sprayed everything, bowls, utensils blades etc with Static Guard™ first, really needs that)
The resultant clear plastic chibbles when mixed with the Flex Paste were even better than the sawdust, and were still a bit yellowish. However, that experiment took all the fibres, none left for the layout. What to do? I had several clear plastic trays that cookies come in (inside the outer packaging). I cut one up, Magic Bulleted it, and (wish I could say “Presto” but it takes a while to reduce to the right grain size) voila! a clear plastic “sawdust” that looks really good when mixed with the paste and applied on the piece of “test ocean”. So now I’m ready to add spray and surf to the scenes on the layout. Pity I have to go install a toilet at my daughter’s tomorrow!
fixerup: to the Trackside Diner. Too darned cold for the sidewalk part to be open right now! Thanks for the mrr info, care to say where you are from? Food is great, and you can order virtually anything your desire, menu selections provided graphically mainly by PC, who also seems to have away of posting first on the page quite often. That gives him (or anyone else except first timers) the joy of paying for everyone on that page!
Dick:
Cloe and Vinny will throw you out of the Diner
Paul: I had the same trouble as you with page 34, but thought it was just part of this evening’s internet reluctance. I closed my browser, came back in, and it was there just fine.
I’d better be off to bed, earlier start tomorrow. Good night all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.
I found this posted over on the train board
Missing Railfan.....Sad news
Just found this in AJC.comA body found earlier this month in a wooded area of east Alabama has been identified as a Gwinnett County man missing since before Christmas.St. Clair County, Ala., Sheriff Terry Surles said Wednesday the body discovered Jan. 3 near Riverside, Ala., is that of 61-year-old Barry Alan Helling of Snellville.Helling, who was found by two fishermen in woods off U.S. 78 east of Birmingham and about 140 miles from his home, died from an apparent gunshot wound to the back of the head.Helling was last seen leaving his house on Dec. 9, and was reported missing by his partner later that dayMike Gilmore
Our thoughts go out to his family an freinds for a fellow rail fanner
Last call for coffee on the east coast...Atlantic timers have gone to bed. Down to 11.2F with a wind chill below 0, so we have a TWO DOG night tonight here in the Northeast.
JEFF: Happy to hear your back didn't suffer anything real bad....it takes a long time to heal at our age, were're not "Spring Chickens" any more.
DER JOHN: That test was for U.S. kids, but if Canadians take the test and pass they get extra food in the Diner for a week.
MIKE: That is sad news .........some people have no fear of God in their actions.
Time to hit the sack, see you guys in the morning...
Evenin', folks! Chloe, a cup of hot cocoa and that chocolate cake in the back of the cake/pie case, please. Yum!
to the Trackside Diner, fixerup! I see some have already given you a suggestion or two on how to decide for your layout. But remember, it's your model railroad, so you can do what you darn well please...
Not much news on the layout - had the workday from H-E-hockey puck-hockey puck today. About everything that could go wrong (with getting one commitment done smoothly), did. Thought I was done, and went home early after no lunch, but then got a call and had to go back in. I'll need to reconstruct my mileage for all the trips.
And now, the forum software won't open the smilies window (gives me a 'Bad Reguest (Invalid Hostname)' error message in the window)...
Anyway, treated myself to dinner out at Panera's (good an excuse as any!).
I have been playing with track designs some this week - trying a variation of the Bullis Yard (which I saw somewhere online, I think). Here's the design, with the main coming in from the left (I'm figuring on this being at one end of either the main or a branch line):
I figure there could be an enginehouse (up to 2 tracks), coaling station and diesel fueling and sanding facility in the upper left, industry lower left, and maybe an industry in the upper corner of the yard or the adjacent track. Just playing with an idea or two - nothing built yet.
Oh yeah, at work we're having our annual audit from the Dept. of Mental Health, and tomorrow morning the crisis department (me and my co-worker David) will meet with some of the auditing team. One question I may be asking will be "What were you thinking when you cut the budget for MH?" We'll see what questions they have for me and David...
Fergie, hope things start going better for you, your Dad and the whole family. for you all. Hang in there, buddy.
I don't have a whole lot more to say tonight, so I'll be heading out for now. Prayers for those of you recuperating (like Jeff and others), and for our snowed-in bunch in the NorthWest.
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good morning
Happy MRRing
Evening gents...
It seems Jeff's bad back is doing the rounds, I've pulled a muscle in my lower back yesterday, god it gave me grief, it isn't so bad now, but it's still painful. I've taken painkillers and anti-inflamatory tablets which have helped.
The weekend is drawing near, and I can't wait to start my new project, mind you I won't be doing too much lifting.
At this moment i'm currently watching Nacho Libre, which is pretty funny...not the funniest, but it's better than nothing...
Good night all...

Much warmer out and bright but overcast for now. I'll just have the coffee today please. Interesting slide show at the museum last night color slides of passenger trains dating from the late 1930's through the late 1950's. Most of the diesel power was E's with a few PA's thrown in, but lots of shots of loooong trains with streamlined Hudsons (or Baltics) on the front. There was some way cool stuff out there at the start of the transition. Also shots of UP's M1000, the Green Diamond and a few others. The most impressive part of how it was has to be the 18-20 car matching consists. What a sight that must have been in real time.
Jim - if you flop your plan upside down to put the turntable nearest the front edge, the stub tracks that would end up at the rear would be ideal for an industry flat or two. It would also make it easier for the "five finger crane" to put locos on the tracks near said turntable. Just a thought.
Der - nice idea with the plastic foam bits and much easier than raiding the fish tank or trying to find white sand in the Maritimes (forgot that part of course). The plastic will also tend to "float" more like real foam in the waves.
I can sympathize with the bad backs - occupational hazard for me. One of the best home therapies I've found is to lie flat on my back with my lower legs on a foot stool. Also doing leg lifts from that position when not in excruciating pain helps (one leg at a time - no foot stool).
Lots to do so got to go. CU,J.R.
