Tomorrow I'm getting a new camera. A Kodak C533. I know there's others that are a lot better but this is the only one I've found that zoom in super close on an object 8 inches away with crystal clarity and stays within $140. The only otehr one I found that could do that costs over $600. Too much for me!

Just a quick stop in tonight. Not much going on around here on either the MR side or the fire dept side. I will be stopping by the LHS on Friday though, just to browse, or so I hope. Anyone need me to look for anything for them? I'm off on Friday anyway, so there will also be stops to Barnes and Noble, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Target, along with other things I have to do.

CAPE JIM: I plan to do much of what you and PC have suggested, I have plenty of table space width and overall length, so with tunnels and mountains, all of which we have in New England, it should be do-able. BTW, Der John lives right on the coast in NS, I live 50 miles inland, due west of Boston, Ma, so we rarely feel any effect from the ocean except when we get a strong Northeast wind.

Dick, I like the selective compression idea. We tend to use our tunnels as a definition between areas. Ten feet is a lot of area for a desk. We put our desks under the layout. Mine sits under the TT. How is that for great?

Dick, I'd be inclined to second PC's suggestion in terms of using selective compression (plus use some cuts and tunnels to make runs seem longer than they are) to give a flavor of various parts of New England. Think I read it in one of the MRP issues or MR, but someone said to pick out maybe a few yards/towns from different sections of the RR's coverage area and use those LDE's that bring a 'flavor' of each state rather than go hog wild and have the CFO toss you out for trying to take over the sewing or living room... It's getting too cold for you to be outside with the dogs, anyway!
Still cold (comparatively) here midday - 24 (F) with a wind chill of 14. Bit breezy - one of those wonderful winds that cuts through any uncovered skin surfaces...[brrrrrr!!] I can only imagine what Dick and our Nova Scotians are feeling like, with that ocean 'breeze' adding the cold & damp together.

PHIL: Thanks for your inputs, I am at the point of parts of the three States right now in my thinking. My layout sits in a room of 10.5 feet wide by 26 feet long, but I am using only 16 feet in length for the layout because I have my desk and work area at the end 10 feet.
The layout has 2 tables end to end along one wall giving me 16' length x 64" wide ( some lift outs along the wall to reach some areas ), 30" X 16' along the opposite wall, a connector at one end that is 36" X 30" , and a lift out connect at the opposite end that is 30" X 24", making the complete rectangle.

Selective compression is a good thing. Problem is, it doesn't cram three states onto a 2x4 module, ya know?
I'd model either one section really well, or perhaps you could partition things off and divide up the layout to model three small portions of each state.

Today, I am still working on the layout, the hardest part for me has been trying to decide what I can fit on an around the room layout, how much of Northern three states of New England I can really include in the layout. Certainly, I cannot layout the area to HO scale miles, so there must be some " layout license " that I will apply. One track run around the entire layout would be 52 feet, which in 1:87 scale is 4524 feet, not even ONE LOUSY MILE of real life !!!!!! Have any of you guys run into this same dilema, or, do you just model a small section of a RR?

HELLLPPP!!! The teenie bopper crached my computer and when I tried to transfer my shop E-mails to a different folder I lost them all. I am using the shop computer for the time being til I can clean out all those I pod things. That REALLY stokes my boiler as even from this computer those replies to my shop e-mail add. are lost! So if any of ya'll sent me mail please resend. Last night after checking the puter the I-pod traffic took up 2 whole gig. THATS wwaaay to much garbage. After a good defragging we'll see if I can get'er up and running.
I have my list for the AF ready just lost all those e-mails so please contact me again.
BTW- We sold 98 Lionel train sets during 2006! Thats 1 set every 4 days!!!! WOW!! No wonder I felt we were ssoo busy cause we were!

PC and Inch, we're having a (comparative) heat wave here - 9 degrees and no added wind chill (but of course, no wind this a.m., either). Supposed to warm up to about 28 (F) today, with clouds lowering through the day and snow supposed to start later tonight. Don't think the weather prediction models have decided which way this storm will track - one model showed the Cape area possibly getting 4 to 6 inches (10-15 cm. or so) of that white stuff, but the radar this morning shows the snowy stuff way out near the SW Missouri/Kansas border, and tracking NE (like toward St. Louis or west of there). Who knows? (well, okay - He knows, but the weatherguessers? - NOT!) We'll see by tomorrow.
Stay warm today - looks like a cold one for most of the middle section of the US (and Maine and our Canadian brethren probably may get the same kind of stuff if that Nor'easter I think DerJohn was talking about arrives). Bundle up time!

Train vs. car: Part of my duties is a Pollution Investigator (PI). Last year I had to investigate a car vs. train. East bound freight hit this car and I had 4 different fire departments helping me look. Finding the train was easy; all we found of the car was a muffler, some parts to the rear breaks and an engine block. About 3 days later we found a license plate. Just as well it made my report easy.

Der, in case Chuck and Kathy don't get back to it first, I believe that's the Spokane, Portland and Seattle (which I believe was part of the Northern Pacific, back in the ol' days...).
Good call, Jim. The Spokane, Portland and Seattle was owned by GN and NP. It never reached Seattle, but Seattle was included in the name to hide the fact that it was a route from Portland to Spokane on the north side of the Columbia River. In 1970, it merged into Burlington Northern.
