Electrical fires are a nasty critter! And you have to use CO2 class C fire extinguishers to put them out. Amazing that in the case of the nail that the fire burned within the walls for such a long time before penetrating through.

Hi again, all.

Dick, good to hear you've checked those places on your RR. On the software, since I use a Macintosh, I'll let others here suggest what they'd recommend for you. I have heard a few suggested here in the past, so you should have some good possibilities to pick from.

Don't blame you on the heat - change over from one thing to another, and the new heat source goes up in cost! Shock [:O]Censored [censored] Is that part of Murphy's law (not Ed - the other Murphy)?

Today, I am still working on the layout, the hardest part for me has been trying to decide what I can fit on an around the room layout, how much of Northern three states of New England I can really include in the layout. Certainly, I cannot layout the area to HO scale miles, so there must be some " layout license " that I will apply. One track run around the entire layout would be 52 feet, which in 1:87 scale is 4524 feet, not even ONE LOUSY MILE of real life !!!!!!  Have any of you guys run into this same dilema, or, do you just model a small section of a RR?

Later,

Yep, I have come the same conclusion! So selective compression is the only way out of that, and buy creating several distinct scenes, and then creatively dividing them you can approximate the illusion of having a longer run, or multiple areas being modeled. For example, my total main line runs equate to 2.49 scale miles in HO. But the areas I am modeling are actually hundreds of miles apart, go figure!

I too was amazed that it was not the blower that needed to be replaced, that could have run into big bucks too! We are just so grateful that it was not more serious, as in burning down the house!

Good afternoon everyone......and thank you Sue, Paul and Jim for your ideas, they are very welcome, many minds working together can accomplish great things...LOL

JIM: I have topo maps of all the New England states, so I have all the railroads shown. I also have gone to Google maps 3d, and have checked that out as well.  I am strongle considering what you mentioned Jim regarding software......can you suggest any layout software that you would recommend?

PAUL: I have sent you my email address, you should now have it.

SUE: I am not doing any detail work in the layout yet, just trying to get the track locations settled, leaving enough room for several buildings that we have already purchased that are exact replicas of what is along one section of track for North Conway, NH through Crawford Notch, NH.

We built this house in 1967, and installed Electric heat at that time....the going rate was $0.016 per Kwh at that time for special electric rate. It was great until about 1988 when the electric comapnies lost a court battle for offering special rates to home owners with electric heat, so then the rates climbed every year until in 1996 I said "enough". My January electric bill that year was $425!!! I converted the system over to forced hot water, oil fired furnace, with power vent ( no chimney required ) myself, for $4500. Contractors wanted $8000. I loved electric heat, quiet, clean, individual room control, very efficient, and zero maintenance in 21 years. Now the price of oil has risen here from $.45/gallon in 1996 to $2.78 this year (contract), plus $125 for contract and cleaning each year. Sometimes I wonder!!!!  Soooo, we bought a Pellet stove for the large Family room upstairs in the split entry ranch, and have a Dutch West wood burning stove in the lower level. The wood burner does a great job keeping this house warm. Since September, we have used 524 gallons of oil. We are on a hill 1000 foot elevation, winds from every direction, house is about 2700 sq ft on 1st level. So I would use over 1200 gallons of oil if we didn't have those stoves. How do you like the Heat Pump? Do you have buried pipes horizontally or vertically as I have seen in places?

Been a couple days since my last visit!

Chloe, got any of those doughnuts left from this morning?

What are you all up to these days?

We have a severe storm warning that started at 6:00 AM and goes until midnight tonight. Snow started falling around 8:00 AM and has been slowing down now. The weather is supposed to turn to sleet and then rain this afternoon.

So check this out! We were sitting in the living room Tuesday evening and watching TV, fireplace on, all snuggled and comfy! Well around 8:30 PM I started to smell something burning, I calmly got up from my Lazy Boy, walked around the whole house and could not find a thing that was burning or on fire, or what! So now I am starting to get worried! I went back into the living room and by now Monique and Ben are up too looking for the source and none of us can find it. The burning smell keeps getting stronger, but still not smoke or fire. I noticed that it was stronger near the HV/AC floor vent, lo and behold there was no air blowing out of the vent but the burning odor was getting stronger.

Now I am in survival mode (once again), I ran to the thermostat and opened the intake filter vent and sure enough it was a stronger odor in the air intake. I turned off the heater and then went outside to flip the circuit breaker to the first floor heater. Come back inside and the burning odor is still strong. What could it be? Now I run back into the garage, get my knee pads on and a flashlight and then go crawling under the house to see if there is anything on fire under there? Nope! No sign of a fire, burning, or smoke! What could it be? Well, needless to say we kept the first floor AC off that night! Oh, did I say it got down to 17 degrees that night too!

The burning odor finally diminished, at least the smell was not getting stronger or more intense, it was dissipating, and that was a good sign.

Long story short, the capacitor for the blower was only putting out around 1.2 Amps, the technician said that was less than half of what was needed to keep the blower running. What happened is the blower stopped running while the heat pump coils continued to heat up, thus overheating and the burning smell was most likely the coils overheating. He did not see any burning from the blower motor or any other parts. So, $161.00 later and we are up and running again, and thank the good lord we did not have a fire! We were all kind of shook up for a few minutes there.

I'll stop for now and check in with you again later!

Cheers,

Ryan

Dick,

Your day sounds similar to mine.  I am trying to burn more wood.  Our power bill came and was almost $100 over the highest ever.  With the freezing weather over the holidays, and the train room in the other end of the house,  the heat pump was running full tilt.  I am painting figures now so I can do that anywhere.

How much detail are you doing with your planning?  Are you doing that with software?  We only did the mainline and spurs to our logging area and to the sawmill.  We will have a wye by the sawmill when the area behind it is complete.  We plotted out our inclines also,  3% up to the sawmill and to the log camp with one spur of 6% on the logging landing.

We did not plan any businesses, but are watching for kits at sale prices.  We are still working on names of some of our places.  That allows us to keep dreaming.

Have fun with your design.  Sue

Good (snowy) morning, ET Diners. Zoe, a cup of joe, please.

Snowy out (for now, not coming down, but that may change), so should be a fairly slow day (good for paperwork) here in the office. Looks nice out there (with me inside where it's warm, of course). Zoe, I'll put another log in the wood stove for you.

Dick, do you have track planning/design software to try out some ideas (and save some of your paper)? I find that way I can save multiple versions when I'm trying something out, and then trash the files that don't make the cut. Another thing for you that might help would be either use Google Earth to look at some RR tracks in the NEast and when you find some area you like, do s screen print of it. That, or one of the RR maps or CDs you can find (as starting points for sections. Have you put down what your objectives for the RR are (such as - modeling logging ops, passenger runs or not/modeled after particular kinds/lines, etc.) so you can trim some but not leave out the most important things you want? Just a few ideas. And like you said, you always can use poetic license to merge a couple of features you like, but not take up extra space.

Well, back at the paperwork. Later!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good morning everyone, the chores are done ( wood stove, pellet stove, empty ashes, bring in more wood, etc. ) so I have a few minutes before I get back to designing the layout. I really didn't want a "canned" layout, one taken out of the books we get from MRR, I wanted the New England area. For the 1st layout, downstairs in my 10.5' X 16' room, I want to build the Northern NE area. For industries of the 1930-1955 era. In particular, Milk trains from the farms and dairies, wood and lumber, paper mills, coal delivery, etc. and some passenger. In NEVER expected that the paper layout design would take me so long. I have a mountain of disgarded drawings. My desire is bigger than my room will allow!!!%$#$ . So, I am forced to scale back, use some "poetic license" and select what I can realistically fit on the layout without having a farm in Northern Vermont next to Boston, Ma, or Crawford Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire sitting on the B&M line next to Greenfield, Ma...ohh well....

MIKE: Good Lord man, be careful when you step out on ice, you can be permanently damaged!!!!!! Keep some salt handy and spread it on your walks if you suspect slippery conditions....the alternative is not good as you have found out. I sure hope you are feeling better today.

JERRY: Glad to hear that Sallie is back home and feeling better.....my friend has that problem and it is no joy !!!

RT: Sorry to hear about the train set, but, today is your BD, so maybe there is a package around the house.

DER JOHN: Layout design phase is a pain in the butt for me, the benchwork was easy, wiring will be easy, soldering is easy for me......but trying to fit what I want and BEING HAPPY with it has cost me MONTHS because I am not happy with each design layout, and I won't lay one track until I am happy with the design, pulling up track later is not an option for me....planning phase "is".

Back to the drawing board....

Good morning all.  I am watching a great sunrise as we speak.

Philip,  Now you have the cold weather.  We have 20's at night, but it has been in the high 40's and sunny by afternoon.  There is no fog this morning so it should get warm sooner.

Happy B-Day [bday], RT.

Well, I should get some things done early so that I can go outside today.  I have a photography class tonight.  I am hoping to improve my skills.

Paul,  I sent my tractor in for service yesterday.  The  chipper will probably go on when it comes back.

Later, Sue

Then bout 11, I took a letter out to the mail box. slipped on some ice an landed hard on my back side. Ended spending most the day laying down cause my back an neck hurt so bad. Didn't get much done on wiring, to hard to crawl round under the layout. I may do some today, not feeling to bad now. Best get ta chores, hope ya'll has a gooden

Good evening, Chloe. Hi, Dick! I'll join you for a bit. Cup of coffee would be good.

Snow has arrived in Cape G. We have about a tenth of an inch (couple of mm's.) so far - I'd say it must have been coming down in the past hour or two, since I didn't see any coming down when I got back from prayer service. They're saying about an inch by tomorrow; no word on how much more through the day on RT's birthday... Happy B-Day [bday], RT!

Not sure if my little shredder has a thermal time-out on it, or if the motor overheated and I'll have to replace it. Was shredding some old pay receipts and credit card receipts that might have my account or SSN numbers on them. Didn't get through all of them yet. Clearing out various papers that are taking up space and I don't need...

So Paul, got a shopping list ready for that train show? Sounds like you should be able to find something you like, with that retirement cash. Yeah!! [yeah] Enjoy your last couple of workdays (well, before MaryAnn makes you clock in on Saturday... Evil [}:)]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Well, 'bout time for me to head off for bed. Might have to clear some snow off the car in the morning, but I have the broom in the apartment, so shouldn't be too hard to do. Those of the rest of you getting snow, drive careful in the morning (or whenever you need to get out).

Blessings,

Good evening gents, just dropping by for a late coffee before hitting the sack.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO RT!!!!!  Happy B-Day [bday] FEB 1st !!!!!! I can't remember when I was that young RT....but then again, my buffer register is so full I can't even remember two days ago!!! LOL What is planned for your BD?? Do I see a new locomotive in that gift box under table 2 in the Diner ?? Hmmmmmm!!!

PAUL: It sounds like you had a great retirement party, congratulations Paul, and I hope you have many years of healthy retirement to enjoy life and hobby with your bride. Maybe you can do some travelling now? The door is open and welcome mat is out if you ever make it this far north.....but I must warn you DUKE has dibs on my wife's Strawberry-Rhubarb pie.....

See you guys in the morning......Fergie has been sleeping late these days, the coffee is not ON when we hit the Diner, the Indiana Jones will have to do the duties I guess.

Bon Soir mais amis

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Good evening folks:  Made a couple of A?C units for the roof of my Omega 3 Fish oil plant today.  I’ve also just got through painting them, a couple of processing tanks, and some storage tanks for the same site. (the process tanks fit through the roof, the storage tanks are on the wharf, or in a mini tank farm off site.)  More rock work attempted, not much though, as it’s a bit fiddly, and I’ve got to wait for some of yesterday’s to harden before I can work around it.

We are having a SP&S weekend garbage sail in march and I'm going to try to go, Kathy can't take the 100 mile ride very uncomfortable for her, so maybe I'll get to go.

Der, in case Chuck and Kathy don't get back to it first, I believe that's the Spokane, Portland and Seattle (which I believe was part of the Northern Pacific, back in the ol' days...).Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good call, Jim.  The Spokane, Portland and Seattle was owned by GN and NP.  It never reached Seattle, but Seattle was included in the name to hide the fact that it was a route from Portland to Spokane on the north side of the Columbia River. In 1970, it merged into Burlington Northern.Sue

…Thanks for the SP&S info.  Now I’m wondering what a SP&S garbage sail is!  Garage sale?  100 miles?

Paul:  Retirement!  Hope the party was a smash!

Dick:

the hardest part for me has been trying to decide what I can fit on an around the room layout, how much of Northern three states of New England I can really include in the layout….Have any of you guys run into this same dilema, or, do you just model a small section of a RR?
…My case exactly Dick.  Add to that my trying to max the running distance by having two levels at one end, and a mid-point between the two, so the track is nearly always on a grade as it goes around the room.

What I’ve done is to try for scenes that have the flavour of the Maritimes, without being exact for any one Province or location.  I’m also modeling CN, as I’m not a CP fan, and I’ll paint up some locos as lease units.  That’s prototypical enough from what I’ve seen around these parts.  VIA is one of my trains, and in a consist that is fairly like the run to Cape Bretton.  Flavour, rather than exactness, is my approach.

RT: …if I’m reading you right!

Goodnight all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Evening Gang: The party went off fairly well concidering the weather. As it turned out it we had rain, sleet, and snow. Alot of the folks showed up and we had a good time. The company gave me a watch and the gang in maintinance gave me $251 that they collected. The WGH train show is 17-18 March so the money will come in handy. My foreman and some of the guys fixed the lunch and did a great job. The burgers were just right and with patato salid and beans tasted good in the cold. Now just 2 more days and I'm free.

Well it's a work day tomorrow so I'd better get to bed. I'll see you all tomorrow.

Good Night

Tomorrow I'm getting a new camera. A Kodak C533. I know there's others that are a lot better but this is the only one I've found that zoom in super close on an object 8 inches away with crystal clarity and stays within $140. The only otehr one I found that could do that costs over $600. Too much for me!

Pc: As far as dinner, I'm getting this:

Jeffery I have the CD33 and love it have had it for about a year now.
