Evening Gang: Well the trip to the not so LHS went well. I pick up 12 sections of Walthers ( Now hang onto you hats) N gauge code 40 flex track. I'm going to use it for mine track so I didn't go over to the dark side. I also got an "N" deck truss bridge for the base of the Sunday Lake mine. That will work out perfectly after I do some cutting and hacking. I ordered some Bachman signal bridges and 6 more of the "N" bridges. On top of that I ordered a Jorden steam shovel. Other then that not much going on. I got some more of the rail for the 7.5 "snap" track drilled for the rail joiners. Ron called just as I was about to start on the 7th set. He said hobby shop and I headed out to pick him up.

Tomorrow is Mary Ann's birthday. She wants to go out for breakfast and then be left alone so she can work on the tax papers. Tomorrow night I'll take her out to Steak and Ale for dinner.

Well I guess I'll head for bed.

Good Night

Afternoon All...Cloudy warmer and posta rain this evening..Lot of the snow is melting....I'll have a cheese burger, onion rings and a diet Coke...Please..Thank You....Well I got of my duff this morning and took most of rolling stock off layout, pulled one of the mine tracks and put in a uncoupling magnet...I am going to lose maybe a car or car and a 1/2 on the siding but will be able to uncouple easier.....also fitted a chunk of pink foam for a dead end bumper....I am looking forward to trying it out to see if it works as well as it does in HO.. I use to get about 95% uncouling in HO if couplers were all right hight and working right....Anybody in N scale know anything about the conversions for M/T couplers on older engines..I was told they don't make them for some of the older engines anymore? I need one for a Atlas RS for the 80's....JR....What type of plaster do you use? Thats some nice work......Dude....Welcome to the coffee shop a lot of us started with 4 by 8's ...I did but back then you could buy all the lumber you needed to build it for 20.00 and get change back...but I was working for 3 something an hour....Jeff.....You got that right buddy a fixed income doesn't mean you can't enjoy the hobby swap meets, thrift shops, yard sales, sale table at your local hobby shop, yes even dumpster diving all the "pink" foam I am using on my layout come from a dumpster...You all have a good evening......Jerry

Happy Mardi Gras!

Or, as translated from French, Happy Fat Tuesday!

If we were still living in New Orleans we would have honored the holiday off from work today. Typically we would have just stayed at home for a quiet day of relaxing or working on the renovations. But, today I am at work, oh well!

Mom sent us a King Cake from one of the local New Orleans bakeries last week, and it was nice to get some of the ole N'Awlins flavor again.

So, now time to catch up with all the posting you all have done since page 73.

Cheers,

Ryan

Welcome back KJ! Yep, they moved the diner on down the track a bit, but it's supposed to help with forum performance. I haven't noticed much difference in the forum, but the service around the new diner is much better now. And those cookies do sound good!

Trent, we had a 2000 Chevy Malibu and it was full of the extras that came as standard equipment too, not those new fancy indicators you mentioned though. It was totaled in a wreck during our move last year.

Lunch time.  Thought I would check in for a change.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] newRRdude, and welcome back KJ.  It's nice to know you're keeping Lewistown where it belongs.  If I went to visit my mother and it wasn't there I would be very confused.

Not much work on the railroad lately.  I've been indulging some other interests.  I will stop do a little work from time to time.  Sometime soon I'll get something started and go full blast again.

Any one know anything about whole house water softeners?  I heard what sounded like a cherry bomb going off in my basement a couple weeks ago.  I looked all over the place and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary but a couple days later my shower head clogged up with mineral deposits.  A little after that the water started tasting a little odd.  I'm leaning toward one of the salt free cataytic kind of treatment systems.  They are more expensive to start with but I won't have to carry 40 pound bags of salt down to the basement when I'm old and decrepit.

Guess that's about it for now.  See you later.

Hi again.

Paul Beverung: yeah, i got my 4x8 layout for only 20 bucks! like i said before, i am pretty new to this hobby, actually i have only been interested for  2 weeks. Colby got me into it by giving me some track and two cars. he and i were out in front of my house taking pics of a train yesterday, (i'm the friend he was talking about) and used up a roll of film pretty fast. along with trains i am also interested in guitar, i'm on a swim team, and i'm hoping to have my layout looking good by this fall. if i can i'll try get some pics to you guys.

Hi GMT. I am pretty sure the track is brass, there isn't any scenery, but for me that's great so i can get some experience making it. and yeah, you can call me dude. i have one question. is there a way to make a small pond on a layout is somewhat easy to create? i read in a magazine that some people use epoxy, but for the ammount i need, it's a little pricy.

thanks,

dude

It's 7:15am and it's 41 degrees already!

How 'bout that?

KJ, a shed....right......mums the word!

GMT, nice water man!  Looks real good!

Well gotta start writing a big paper today for school.  I've got it mostly thought out, I've just got to get it on paper.  All I need for class is a rough draft, so that shouldn't be too bad.

What's up with you all?

Good Morning All,

27F already this morning though overcast. The truck left at 0 dark thirty so that's done, now just the million other things we have left.

Poured the last plaster wall this morning before leaving for here (notice Paul I'm not using the w word - don't want to dismay you) so that's finally done, 16 in all.

We can try another pic from the lower level of the layout showing the inlet and the bridges with the viaduct and port backdrop behind. Still need to build the bank on the right once I figure out the final scheme for industry there. Maybe even a short wharf.

Paul, I think the Bridgeport mill is the single most useful tool on earth. Of course I'm a bit biased - my grandfather worked at Bullards where it was developed. We have two J's in the shop and they are both constantly in use.

Hoople, If you beat Trainworlds' prices you really did well. I still want to figure out a way to fit a small compression spring between the front truck and the frame or perhaps some weight for the Bachman steam loco. Might work better that way.

Inch, Your vendor friend sounds like one of the LHS's here - grousing all the time about sales volume, but never a lot of stock or even help at the counter when you need it. Funny way to run a business.           Oh well, time to pick up tools. CUL,J.R.

Mornin, Coffee please Zoe,

Temps atill above freezing and waiting on some light rain, that was suppose to be here last night, anyway high in the 40's and damp for today.

JERRY, there was one more vender with N than HO. As far as layouts there was 1 N, 1 HO and 3 O scales [2- 3 rail and 1- 2 rail]. Yes ED was there trying to sell his junk and I mean junk. Some of the worst he's had, at high dollor. Coryville was the one I had trouble paying, which surprised me I heard him complaining bout sales being down so much this year.

The ROCKOHM show is coming up in April. Hope it's better.

DUDE,  have a cup on me and hope ya enjoys yur visit here.

KJ, whats your book about ??  Your's made you cookies, mine made me fudge brownies. Why I don't know why, she can't eat'em with this new diet she's on.

Best get on ta chores, got kids today so no play time

Evening gang:

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] newRRdude: Have a cup of coffee or a sfot drink on me. Would it be OK if we called you dude or would you like to use your name? We're a pretty friendly bunch but lazy. The less letters in the name the better. It sounds like you got a deal on that old layout. The main thing about the hobby is to have fun. I'd also like to hear more about yourself and your interests and plans.

JR: The mill is an old Bridgeport M head. It's all hand feed. I got it in 1972. It was one of 8 that were in a circle at a manufacturing plant. It does a good job on the stuff that I do.

Well I'm off to bed. My best to all.

Evenin' All.

Zoe, I'll have a tall ginger ale. thanks, you're a peach!

Had the whole day off and didn't do a damned thing! I thought about the new layout and even took a track planning book the doctor's office, but that was about it! Most of the day I spent fighting with  all these computers that we have. At least I got my new notebook cooler. Maybe now I'll be able to run Trainz without the computer crashing form the heat. (I know this is a model railroading diner - sorry!)

Welcome Dude. Hope this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. I love the smell of burning coal in the morning. Tell us more about your new layout. In return we'll tell you more than you want to know about ours!

Oh, the CFO is making chocolate chip cookies and they smell GOOD! And they are even heart smart (the chocolate part) especially with a glass of red wine (which is also heart smart), at least I happily tell myself after a cookie and a glass.

I did some work on the M&V today on the Vira Extension. It's beginning to make sense. I can't wait for the refund check so I can buy some track (not to mention lumber, screws, glue and all the rest. The CFO told me to get a new Home Depot charge card! She thinks we're getting a new shed for the lawn tractor. Please don't tell her any different!

I forgot to tell you guys that I finished my novel last summer and did a limited self publishing. If any of you are literary agents or publishers I'd be awfully glad to hear from you!

The cookies call!

Good Evening All,

Still molding plaster wals and fighting with my picture uploads.

At least that works now. See - Fergie doesn't have a monopoly on messes. Now that I can struggle and get the images to upload I can at least play show and tell a bit.

And welcome Dude. It's a slow night tonight here in the diner but pull up a stool and hang for a while. A 34 year old prefab layout sounds cool. Is it brass track or nickel silver and what configuration is it? Any scenery? And what will you put on it for rolling stock? (we are a very nosey bunch here).   CUL while I try to edit some more pics, Big Smile [:D]J.R.

Hoople - The Bachmans' seem a good deal and the other place to look is Trainworld. I like the way the Bachmans run though the steam engines have troubles if the trackwork is off the least little bit.I have a light mtn a couple of 44 tonners and an EF4 electric plus a N&W J which is still in its' box. More to the point, if the solder keeps coming off, you are probably not getting the joint hot enough. What do you use for soldering, and what size and type of solder are you using? If you are trying to simply resolder an existing connection, try a little resin flux on the parts to make a clean secure join. Should be stronger than the wire used.

End Quote

I looked at trainworld and the prices for spectrums with sound is about $50 more.

The only problem I experience with my heavy mountain is when it runs through a closed switch,(when it was thrown for curve and it was coming from the straight) The lead truck derails.

Otherwise, They do better than my other engines. (Thank GOD it went through my flextrack. Not so bad for first time layout...)

Inch: That could have happened. Luckely, I have a 4 day weekend, because teachers have an in service tommorow, so my bud is gonna come over with his engines and some cars and we'll run trains till we fall over dead. (Or we have a cornfield meeting, either one... Let's hope for the first one.)

I just gotta say I LOVE DCC. It's the best thing EVER.

If only I could figure out how to program the decoder, because I tried a HEX in base 2 and that messed everything up, but when I just push a number, it does it correctly. Very confusing, because my NCE decoder manual tells me that I need to use a HEX for Digitrax systems, but just punching in 2 instead of 10 works... Does the Zephyr do the math in it's head?
