I'm only voicing my opion, not to stirr up any bickering: If it was me I'd shoot the dog and call it self-defence.
Now onto non-animal related subjects.
Who here went to the National Narrow Gauge Convention in Portland, Maine. Wensday through Today? Monday is the last day of the convention. sort of.
I was there today from 10am to about 5pm. I was the fireman for real for the first 3 trips, then watcher for 1 trip, after that trainman. I got nice and dirty, (much to my mom's disgust: you can gess why) from spending so much time in the cab of Monson #4 which was built by Vulcan Iron Works it's a 0-4-4. No pics yet. Ridership was prety good through out the day. It was one of the best days of my volunteering 'career' there, untill Mike Mousiln (Engineer/Fireman), (Somthing) Page (Engineer) and I were watering #4. I was on top and the water was getting close to the top. I told mike to go turn the water off. I told him just a wee to late, and the water overflowed. Now normaly it would be just wet coal nuggets, but there was more coal dust than nugges and well you figure the rest out. (can you say coal sludge) and a few minutes later a seal on one of the water glasses went and for the rest of the day I was trainman, and not Fireman. Running with one water glass does not give the greatest water level reading.
On a better note I had good conversations with people from New York, Ohio, Missouri, Mass. (I did that just for you Fox), New Hampshire, and a few other states. There was even a Japanies group of 78. (Adult tickets are $10 do the math for the profit)
And what do ya know? Cloe were is the duster? The account needs a good dusting off.
Evening Gang: I spent another afternoon at John's ranch working on the road. John had trimmed a bunch of trees along the road so when I got there with my tractor I cleared up the remains. That took a couple of hours. I went up to the gravel pit and got the big loader to haul some fill to the washout. I got one load there when it started to rain. Since the winsheld had been knocked out when it was delieverd I got a bit wet going back to the pit. Mary Ann and I took John and his wife out for dinner and gave him a card and a copy of the local paper with his picture on the front page with birthday greatings. I don't know if he enjoyed that. By the way he's 37 tomorrow not 38. OK so I can't do math to well. Tomorrow it's back to hauling gravel.
Just on the news. Police had to shoot two pit bulls today when they attacked the officers. The same dogs also had attacked a women. At this time it's not known if the dogs had an owner. Hopefully if they did they will get it under the new dangerous animal law.
Jeff, did you shave off your beard or am I seeing things. By the way. If thats the way your pictures come out with 1.5 megs I'll be waiting with abated breath for yours with a better camera.
Well it's bed time.
Good Night All

Jim, I hope that you and PC didn't show up while we were on a bike ride today. Yes, the backyard is quite large. I think that the whole gang could hang out there. We just finished hamburgers from the barbee.
Hope that you all are having a great holiday weekend. I looks like everyone has busy with posting.

Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.
Check out the car in this photo. The guy broke through the railing where the people are standing and did a complete end over end and landed on the other side of the culvert.

Evening, Chloe - I'll just have some for now. I'll go light on you Colby, it sounds like you've had a busy day!
Didn't get back to the soldering (yet) today, but I'm hoping to manage that this evening, or at least tomorrow. Want to re-glue some steps and siderails from my (Revell-type) freight station, and also get a little further on the Golden Valley Depot. I have the bay window assembled to its wall, now to join the rest of the walls together.
On second thought, Chloe, I'll have some strawberries and ice cream, please (I'll cover it).
I'll be here at Colby's table - let's see if he's washed all the soot sludge off yet. What? Chloe hosed you clean outside before she'd let you in? Good thing it was warm enough outside here today. You sure dried off pretty good - I couldn't tell you weren't completely dry.
Ed, it might be fall before you can get to the orange grove, at the rate those storms have been coming through your area. Hopefully Felix will lose his way and not be able to find your area after going through the Yucatan. Nice photos of 593/193 - I would agree with Rob - she looks like you could fire her up and run down the track (if there were some ahead of her).
Anyone seen JP recently? Maybe he's out railfanning with his new lady friend.
Wondering how Luc and Gloria have been, after seeing Ed's pics. Luc sent me a link a few days ago of some webcams up his way. Even tonight, the view is sweet up there. Only 60 F (16 C), so a little cooler than we are here.
Paul, sounds like you got a goodly amount done today. Are there still many slips in the HDJ? I need to make myself one of those (for myself, since I'm the only way stuff will get done around here).
OzJim must be keeping himself busy too, haven't seen him around either.
Chip, I'd agree with Tom - that guy sure was lucky! I think I saw the remains of a much older wreck down at the bottom of the gulley in the far away shot.
Tom, to the Diner - Colby's buying for now, but I'll cover your beverage order. Just tell our virtual server Chloe what you'd like. What's your layout like (or your plans for it)? Fill us in about it, we're nosy curious and friendly. (Just don't get between PC and a pie when they bring them out front from the oven...)
Prayers for those ailing, or travelling this weekend, or in need of comfort. I'll be working on my strawberries and (ice) cream.
Blessings and a good evening to you all,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
WOW....WOW....and uh...WOW.
Well, the wife and daughter just got back a little bit ago from the hospital. Last night my daughter was playing basketball and jammed her finger pretty bad. My wife took her to the hospital to have it looked at. They took some X-rays and badaged it up to send her home. Today the doc called and said the X-ray didn't look good and could she come back. She fractured her finger in two places. They put her finger in a pretty hefty split, hooked her up with some light pain killers, then sent her back home. I just tucked her in (she's still daddy's little girl when she's hurt). Poor thing! She's going to be in the splint for 6-8 weeks.
Sue, I wondered where you and Larry were off to!
One last thing....you all be careful out there in the big room. The trolls are loose again!
Ed......thanks for Neefie bullet phtotos. Wish I could have riden the train when it was in operation. (That train and many others.)
Jim CG .... Thanks for remarks regarding GP7's and also MR ohtot.
Rob...gald you liked the grain elevator pictures.
Paul .. hope there are no more pit bulls in your area.
Philip (Moose)..... sorry to learn of daughter's broken finger. You mean you didn't kiss it and make it well?
Well, let's all head for Olympia for BBQ burgers, cool weather, and a big back yard. (Trains, too perhaps?)
Meanwhile, i'll browse Jeff's KCS pictures.
Bye.

Nothing worth reporting on here. (Wife took Jeckle & Hyde out for the day)
Good Morning, Diners! I'll have a glass of Ed's OJ
(before we run out until he can get to the orange grove and send us another tanker load or two), cup of coffee,
and a stack of pancakes, please.
Thanks!
PC, sorry to hear about your daughter's damaged finger. I just hope the cast won't be... embarassing for her. I know which finger I would always jam when I played volleyball, so I hope it's not that one...
Hey, did I hear someone say Oboyoboyoboy!! Load 'em up, guys - we're going to Olympia!
Last night, I got the four walls assembled on the Golden Valley Depot, and the freight station steps halfway done. Durn, but I need to order some of those magnetic gluing thingamajigs and some good right-angle clamps. Clamps are what I'm really missing (and needing) for putting together my MRR structures. I also was looking at the radio station tower assembly, and I think I'll have to take it apart and re-glue it. the ends on the three sides aren't level at either end of it, and the joints sounded like they were coming apart when I was fiddling with it. Ah well, not a biggie.
Need to finish up my pancakes and get going - more MRR'ing today!
Blessings,
Hey Bryan, to the Diner, and have a cup on me! What's your layout like - time period, modeling a prototype or freelancing, still planning or how far along is it for now? Inquiring minds and all that... Good to see you're working in (what others call) Horribly Oversized (as called by the ones modeling in iNvisible scale ). We razz each other sometimes, but the Diner is much friendlier than some of the flame wars out in the general forum, and we try to keep it comfortable in here. As I said, ask one of our twin servers (that's Chloe today, she's covering the holiday for her twin sister Zoe) will take your order for beverage and food. There's a pool table in the back, and the corner window booth is good for watching the trains, or you can sit at one of the tables. Enjoy the place and come back soon.
Blessings on your Labor Day,
Hi Jim. My layout (if you would call it that) is very much in the planning stage. I am very limited on space at this time which poses a huge problem. I have built the bench work for a 4X8 layout and the track that i have is just the atlas power loc. i have some track down just to have something to run, butr it is simply making laps, which as you know can get really boring. i would like to model the napa valley wine train, but not sure it is possible.please let me know if you have any ideas. have a safe holiday.
Morning all!
Haven't been in for a little while, it's been a busy weekend.
Give me a short stack and some milk chloe. Thanks.
Jim: Real big roadtrip... WOOHOO! One and a half hours in a car! Oh wait... I can't drive... Ok then, 5 hours on a bike!
Well tommorow I go back to S****l... ug... Not to mention I have soccer practice today... Oh well. Last day of summer... Whoopdedoo... Oh well, the weekend will come soon enough. Hopefully my challenger will come by then.
Bryan, Welcome! Come have seat. We're both in the same boat my friend. I have a 4x8', although it's got nearly all the track down, I have some buildings, but no scenery. It's based in colorado, becuase I love the D&RGW and UP, I don't think SP ever ran in Colorado... But who cares. It's freelanced. I picked about 50-100 miles west of denver, so it's a small town in the rockies. There are rumors of big boys getting to Denver, so I guess its OK if I run them.
As for your layout, I'd suggest getting rid of the Life-Like PowerLoc track. Maybe get atlas Tru-Track, or maybe kato unitrack.
Well, I gotta go,
Mark
Hello everybody.
Welcome Bryan from Charleston, SC.. I recall being there in Charleston about 5 years ago and I wanted to see the replica of the Best Friend of Charleston, but it was enclosed in a shed not open due to construction. I did peek in the window, but it was hardly much of a view. I'm wondering if the old locomotive is out on display now. Enjoy building the layout.
Mark....... in its pre-UP merger days, SP did operate in Colorado. The smaller Rio Grande purchased SP and merged it into a larger SP that included the Rio Grande. Prior to all of that SP and DRGW pooled locomotives and SP units did haul trains through Colorado on DRGW. I'd have to research dates but I would guess DGRW acquired SP about 1990 and UP acquired the merged DGRW/SP about 1995. You can have fun researching on the computer. Maybe Wikipedia will answer if you type "Southern Paciifc" in their search box. A good aspect about model railroading, is you can do what you want.
Jim......If you want one of those magnet things let me know. I have one that I stopped using. I check PM's in next day or so.
Now, now Rob ......respect the in-laws.
good afternoon all,
hope your all well
Ed nice pictures you have there
Good Afternoon Coffee Clubbers,
A lazy day enjoying the holiday down here. Oh, wait, it's not a holiday down here. I just got confused because every day seems like that to us retired folk.
Weather report? Hot and humid, like usual.

Here are the last three shots from the trip to Newfoundland. Rememberthat this is 3'-6" gauge stuff. Not a very common gauge.
They had one of the NF110 road diesels at Corner Brook. Here's #931, a newer sister of the one now on display at Clarenville. But, like all the equipment here at this museum, it's in great shape. I believe it even still has its prime mover and traction motors. It's wearing the CN zebra stripe paint scheme. As at several locations, Corner Brook has a caboose. This one is wearing the "Terra Transport" logo and paint scheme. This was the last incarnation of the railroad's identity (1979) as part on CN's attempt to isolate itself from the system (probably already planning on abandoning service). And, of course, no Nfld Railway display worth it's salt could be without a snowplow. Here is one of the big push type plows. But the steam locomotive and the passenger train were the main reason for the trip, and I was extremely happy to see them, and to find that they (and all the equipment here at Corner Brook) were in such good condition. I remember posting last year how disappointed I was with the poor condition of the equipment on display at several locations.
A couple of you guys asked whether the #593 might be capable of restoration to operating condition. I doubt that anything like that is in mind. The costs for a major renovation, including boiler overhaul, are enormous. This is a small railway historical group with virtually no government funding nor access to major fund raising. No way they're going to ever come up with that kindof money. And, even if they did, remember that all the tracks have been lifted. There's no place for her to go!It was a great trip. We're planning on going back again next year. Maybe I'll find something else worth shooting.
Enjoy your barbeques today.
Later
Ed

Not Hardly Jim she made me change clothes (Zoe spots coal tracks leading to Jim)
Tom take that advice to heart. PC is like a train with (5) 2-8-8-2s Big Boys, 5 Hudson Class locos, 3 GE Evolution Series Locos, ACC3W (whats the diesle built by GE that has those letters in it's name?) pulling the weight of 100 AirCraft Carriers, downhill on a 10% grade with no brakes. PC is that about right? (and did you know that PC single handedly made the town bakery down the tracks into a international pie supplyer, just by buying pie there?) It's true.
Ed- "Normal'' scale is iNvisible scale and 90% of the equipment used on N scale poses a choking hazard. A House Oquainted railroad is the way to go.
Here is the pic that proves I was fireman (NOT POSED)
Hey guys, I'll have the chicken strips with onion rings and a coke, chloe.
Garry: Thanks for the info, Although I knew it already. I found a site completely dedicated to the Espee, and it talks about everything from routemaps to what specific passenger car is in what consist. Oh and also, SP was bought by D&RGW in 1988, and then bought by UP in 1996.
In my modeling era, the closest they were is Salt Lake City. Ah well... Even if they did, the daylights and cabforwards wouldn't run through now would they? That's the glory of freelancing.
Well, I gotta roll,
