Good afternoon to everyone on this hot and steamy August 30th. I have to go water the garden again before it turns into the New England Sahara, or the Midwest dustbowl of the 30's. No rain is forecasted here for at least the next 7 days under bright sun .Thumbs Down [tdn]

ED: Yes, I do remember from the old days of the Coffee Clubbers. And I hope you take it easy running up those high hills to get your photo shots under that hot Mexican heat. What a great view. How far is this location from your home?

MIKE: PEACE IN THE VALLEY once more I see !!!!! Isn't it nice? We love our grandkids, no doubt about that, but boy, can they wear us out at our age......just wait until PC and Ryan get over 60. LOL  Nice shots Mike, but sad to see the areas where the tracks are NO MORE. Sad [:(]

JEFF: That was real nice of SpaceMouse and the guys to donate the camera and stand, you have given so many items at no cost ( and not expected either ) to modelers in need, I am happy for you Jeff !!!

FERGIE: Having lost my dad in September of 2000, just as we were going to do the things we always talked about as soon as "I" retired, I sure know how you feel buddy. But I can tell you this from my experience, he will always be with you in the little things that you do that bring back fond memories. God Bless you Fergie.

Later guys, time to get going..

PS  CAPE JIM: Stop getting the boss upset,

Please and keep it coming. Thanks!

***Ed, neat photos. Those curves are exactly the type I would like to have on the future layout. Heck, would also love to have models of those locos as well, just make them all Union Pacific.Big Smile [:D]

***Mark, too bad about your corn. Even with the few recent thunderstorms, our creek remains dry. Will take a major tropical depression, and even then it will have to stall out on top of us. All time record drought this year for us. Hey, I like the photo of the weathered CSX loco infront of the mill. You didn't borrow that photo from Jeffrey's layout, did you!?!Wink [;)]

***Jeffrey, more excellent photos I see. Really enjoying them, but makes me think of the amount of work it will take to create something remotely as nice and it will be daunting to say the least.

Healing thoughts to those in need.

Run?  What is this word "run" of which you speak?  I actually picked my footing pretty carefully as there was a lot of loose rock on that hillside.

What a great view. How far is this location from your home?

Conservatively speaking, about a 7-1/2 hour drive one way.  I'd have to drive down the coast as far as Veracruz (city) then turn up the highway towards Puebla as far as the city of Orizaba, then head out the valley to Acultzingo.  Not something I'm going to be doing very often.

Regards

Ed

It came as a complete surprise to me. I saw the thread titled 'Solving a problem the old fashioned way' and wondered what it was. As with most new threads, I gave in to a sudden attack of intense curiosity and was very surprised by what I found. I spent almost half the next day waiting to wake up and find it was just a dream. I still can't get over it. People coming to my aid without me even asking. Thanks to all involved.

Today I've been doing more ballast work. Here are pics of my progress. Excuse the glue bottles and tools. The pics were taken as the work was being done.

This represents about five percent of the layout.

Jeff,

So......only another 95% to go!

Seriously, it looks good.

Now do you come back after the ballasting and add a little turf and some weeds along the edges of the ballast?

Exactly right. Some of the ballast will be overgrown in weeds and vines.

Good evening, just got back from a wake...our long time neighbor passed away after being hospitalized for a year with Parkinsons......they built their house in 1965 and we in 1967, I coached two of his sons in Little League. He was a Lt Commander in the Navy (retired). Only three of us now remain of the original 25 families, some moved away others passed on to that RR in the sky.

ED: Man, that is quite a ride. Is that on good highways or secondary roads making account for 7.5 hours? I can drive all the way from cental Massachusetts to New Brunswick Canada and be withing 3 hours of Luc, Fergie and John in 7.5 hours!! Ohhh, here is some code for you for todays disgusting exhibition TYS!!!!!!!!!

JEFF: That is just great Jeff, it really proves what most of us believe about this hobby and the people who share it's bonds.

Well, Trains mag came today, so I'm going to sit and relax on this warm night with a Coconut Rum coke and enjoy some reading pleasure.

In regards to my employment by NS, you will find that being a railfan and model railroader is vastly different from working for a real railroad. Add in the fact that for 28 of my almost 31 years with NW/NS, I have been a union rep (Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen) and you might understand why I might be less than enthusiastic about discussing some aspects of modern railroading. That isn't to say, however, that I am not grateful for a job that has given me good wages and benefits for so long and will, in Jan. '08, allow me to retire.  I have, on occasion, participated here in some discussions about the "real thing" and I will continue to do so when I think I can make a worthwhile contribution.

Evening Gang: We hauled more hay today. After we took a long lunch break we went back to it. Just as we had picked up a couple of bales it started to rain. We got the bales to the lot and unloaded and headed for the house. I wasn't too wet but Mary Ann got soaked. That ended the hauling for the day.

I'd better head for bed before I fall asleep at the keyboard.

Hello everyone.

I hardly ever reply here, but I'm kind of heavy hearted this morning and feel the need to vent.

This past Wednesday evening, my beautiful 14 year old male gray and black striped white chested and white socked tabby cat Tiger was mauled to death by my neighbor's dog while on a leash in my front yard. When I confronted the guy down the road that owns the dog about it he flew into a rage and opened my truck door and invited me to step out and discuss it... I'm 43 years old and in ill health. He's 32 years old and into body building and kick boxing. Little did he know that I had my 9mm pistol under my right leg the entire time... Anyways, the cat was my best friend in the world, and I can't begin to tell you how much I miss him. It was so hard seeing him dead like that. It did something to me. I've been walking around in a fog ever since. I thought about pressing charges on the guy, but it wouldn't bring the cat back. I just pray that God gets even with the guy and his dog for what they did... Thanks for listening.

Well first off... Welcome you should come in more often as it's cosy here.

Secondly. Yes you should press charges, why ? because these punks figuire it's their right to go through life and do what they darn well feel like. If his mutt has killed once it will do it again, who knows another cat, dog, child

What occurred was abusive and against the law. This is not vengence on your part but standing up for your and everyone elses rights. That's where freedom starts.

THank you

Just a tall glass of cool water. Couldn't sleep, thinking of all ahead to do today.

***Tracklayer, wish I had some good suggestions for you, but I'm still fighting with myself daily not to do something about a particular bastar* that would change my own life irrevocably and do nothing to keep all those 4-legged companions still under my care healthy and content. I believe our justice system is totally broken when it comes to dealing with such sickos, but it doesn't mean it isn't still worth pursuing. Perhaps someone else here can offer some helpful suggestions!?! My deepest sympathies for your loss and the aggrevation of the situation.

***Philip, I have always been a Canon fan. Look up cnet. for some helpful reviews. The site usually offers very sound advice.

Will check in later if I don't collapse from exhaustion or blow a gasket in my brain.Sleepy [|)]

Tracklayer,

Sorry to hear about your beloved cat. You might want to also contact the local SPCA and any other animal rights groups in your area and tell them your full story. Typically they have the power to report any instances of blatant animal abuse to the proper authorities if they find foul play, and that seems to be the case with your incident. I have always had animals in my life, including at any given time any number of dogs, cats, birds, fish, rabbits, ducks, and amphibians. From my experience with other dog owners in various neighborhoods who abused their pets I can tell you that they will defend their stance to the bitter end, so be prepared mentally. Also, just like Fergie mentioned, that dog just might attack another being, animal, or human such as a little unsuspecting child the next time. The dog needs to be properly yard fenced or put down if it continues to exhibit bad temper.

Oh, Chole, I'll have some fresh brewed coffee and a fresh pastry too!

Good morning everyone, well, here it is the last day of August and meteorologically speaking, the last day of Summer.

TRACKLAYER:  Welcome to the Diner, I am sorry to hear of your loss, unfortunately, the world has no shortage of fools and idiots that are either high on drugs, booze, or excessive testosterone levels. I echo what Fergie has said. This guy is dangerous, and his dog is even more dangerous because as Fergie said, the next time it might be a child that gets mauled, or worse. Then you will be saying to yourself, "why didn't I"...DO IT!!! And please visit the Diner my friend, this is a place to talk about MRR and share what we do and have a vitual coffee with friends from all over the world.

Good morning.

More rain on tap for today with a high of 88.

Tracklayer: If it was me, I'd bury the guy under a pile of charges so deep he'd feel like he was back in the stone age. Stand up for your rights and show the guy you mean business. Does your area have a leash law? If so, why was the dog off it's leash? Some years ago, I had to shoot two dogs that were doing their best to kill a six year old boy, so I have no love for aggressive dogs or their (many times) equally aggressive owners.

Mornin' all,
I've been starin' in the window and thought I'd stop buy for a cup o'mud this AM. Jus cream, thanks.

Did anyone else see this news article today?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070830/od_afp/malaysia50yearsrailoffbeat_070830105837

Tracklayer: My heart goes out to you. Drop a dime to animal control and just ask if there's anything they can do, like enforce the leash law. The Sheriff here has no problem with you shooting a threatening dog on your property. Then again, I live way, way out in the stix. Just remember the "No discharge of a firearm within 200 feet of an occupied building" rule.

Good coffee!

Well, It's off to Walgreens to get my monthly refills of Meds.
Jeffrey: I'll take a look at those camera's that you just got while I'm there.

Edit to add:
Well apparently I stink at adding links. Anyone able to help?
On second thought, I figured it out.

Mornin'!

Wow! We are getting off to a great start on this Friday morning with clear skies and temperatures in the 50s to near 60 degrees. You couldn't ask for a better forecast for the Labor Day weekend as high pressure will dominte the weather scene. Temperatures will gradually warm as we head through Sunday and Monday. The weather should be fantastic for the US Nationals at ORP.

We had a high temperature of only 79 on Thursday. This August is now the 2nd warmerst on record with an average temperature of 80.3 degrees. The warmest August will remain in 1936 with an average reading of 80.5. We will probably finish in 3rd place after a high today of only 80 degrees. This month will also finish with below normal rainfall marking the 5th month in a row for Indy wih below normal precipitation.

A look ahead indicates hot and more humid weather returning for the first half of next week. There will be a weather system approaching by the middle of next week which could produce our next chance of showers and thunderstrorms by Thursday or Friday.

Have a great and safe weekend!

Tracklayer, I've got to say that I'm with the others when it comes to pursuing this.  I'm not the sue-happy type, but this is something that will probably escalate one day if it's not taken care of.  I'm sorry for your loss though.

BTW, I also second the others on you stopping by more often!

Oh, and Rob, thanks for the tip on the camera info!

Mark,

We went to the Museum on our July 4th trip.

They are working on this one.

And this one was outside.

These photos were taken on the cell phone so their quality is fair at best, but they were great for reference.

If your family ever takes a trip and you are in the area, it is worth the stop.

Speaking of trips, Ed, have you ever done the Copper River Canyon trip?

Mornin, coffe and a chocolate milk Zoe, Jbirds here till bout 1

The weather here's bout the same as PC's, no more to say about it.

Gotta prayer request for a family. A friend of ours 4 year old grandson [Keegan] died Wed. night after church, when his mother backed their truck over him. She thought he was still with his dad by the church. The family needs all the help they can get now to get through this.

DICK, I've not quite hit the 60-year mark yet, but doc did say I was in good shape for 75. Yes the kids do ware us out, but they keep us a little younger too.

It is sad bout the tracks being gone. They were busy when I was a kid and went from Terre Haute to St. Louis [along IL-16 from Paris on west] in the old NYC days. Now all that's left is the line from Pana into ST.Lou.

Sorry to hear of your neighbors passing. Our thoughts with the family.

ED,, I've not been around of long as some of you old timers, but I still remember the old days well.

Thanks for another round of great pics.

FLASHWAVE,, welcome to the dinner, have a cup on me. Hope you enjoy your visits here. If you want any pie, remember to bet PC in.

BILL T,, we do enjoy your visits here, especially the doughnuts. I've read some of your post on other threads and learned thing I didn't know, thanks.

PC,, Cannons are suppose to be good. I got mine at [I hate to say this] Wally World for bout $80 and it does ok, I think.

TRACKLAYER, sorry to hear bout your cat, that's a sad and unnecessary loss. You should have called the law then n there. Me I'd a shot the dog first though.

PRINTER,, I don't think I'd let that guy's teeth near me.

SUE,, liked the museum pics. Looks like they've got plenty to restore there.

Hope ya'll has a gooden and thoughts for those in need

Yeah,  they have lots in their bone yard.  When we were there we were lucky enough to visit with one of the main guys in charge of the rebuild.  Their team keeps plodding alone.  Money is a big factor influencing their pace.  It was quite interesting to hear the history of where they find some of these relics.
