Good evening everybody, hot and humid today, 80F and DP of 68F, RH of 68%, but relief is on the way, a nice cool, dry, Canadian air mass is entering from the NW and will be here by 11pm tonight. I really feel for all you guys in the south and midwest that have suffered for weeks with this humidity and extreme heat, September is only 15 days away so hang in there, snow will be flying before you know it.
I purchased a great little book called Rail Power, the author is Steve Barry, and the publisher is Gallery, it sells for $14.95. It covers both Steam and Diesel, and gives the number of each type locomotive that was built. For instance, 611 Berkshires were built, the last one being in 1949. GP Diesel production included: GP7: 2,729, GP9: 4,257, GP18: 390, GP20: 260, GP28: 26, GP30: 948, GP35: 1,333. GP38: 493, GP39: 21, GP40: 1,243.
GARRY: Buffett's method is a good one for most periods of the market, but we have a terrible problem now, the dollar is falling and will continue to fall with only minor rises whenever the Fed prints more money. And, as the Fed prints more money and floods the market with more dollars, that cheapens the value of the dollar, so I money buys less, hence inflation gets worse. This also causes all the foreign countries who have invested in America since forever, to look elsewhere to currencies that are doing far better, like the Euro, the Pound, the Australian dollar, etc. And when all that support money flees the U.S., we will be in even deeper doo doo. The mortgage debt in the U.S. is greater than the ENTIRE Federal Budget, over 1.5 Trillion dollars...that is a serious problem my friend!!
MIKE, ED, COLBY, PC, very nice photos, I really enjoyed them all, thank you for sharing them with us.

My first tipoff to this little hole-in-the-wall town was the station (main office) from this diminuative town that was relocated to the Indiana Transportation Museum in Noblesville, Indiana. Here's a pic of the station:
So I decided to see what might be left of the RR at this tiny hamlet. As I was driving up, one throwback to this towns past was glaringly obvious:
Other then that, it seemed that not much else was left from this long ago whistle stop along the old Nickel Plate Railroad. But that's when I stumbled onto this little gem!
Seems that someone decided to fence this old relic in.....and there she sits, a gentle reminder of the past.
I hope you enjoyed your brief tour of Hobbs, Indiana. Little is left now, but the station and a few key items live on!

Evening Gang: It's raining. We didn't get the hay baled it was still too green. The visit to the VA didn't get me to meet the new doctor. He called in so I was turned over to another doc. She was nice and we had a nice visit.
JimCG: do go and talk to the VA. The service to me here has been good.
I hauled hay untill 7pm so I'm really tired.
Jerry I'm very happy that Sally is doing better.
My best to all those in need.
Thanks PC. I thought for sure that I would be buying this page. Ladies I'll have a nice New York strip with baked patato, a salad and how about a glass of the really good Merlot. The devel made me do it.

My grandfather's (Charles O. Tidler) B&B gang built the Hobbs depot. I believe you can find his name written on one of the timbers or boards in it. He started with the LE&W in 1917 and worked up until sometime in the 1960s.(And it's "Nickel", not "Nickle" )
I'm the last Tidler that has worked continuously for the same railroad (through three mergers-LE&W, NKP, N&W and NS)) since 1910 and I will soon be retired in a few months. I live five miles west of Hobbs in the big city of Tipton.Nice pics. Thanks !
Mornin, steak n eggs, coffee please Zoe
Weather guessers are saying slightly cooler with a high of 88. Leaving this morning for the fishing trip, me, Clyde n one the other guys going out n set up camp. Pat and a couple others are coming out later. Weather's hot out that way, so fish my not be biting, but at least there's no diapers to change.
JERRY,,,, glad Sally's doing better and moved a little closer, that'll make thing simpler. Remember if,en ya need something call, I'll be gone, but Mother's here bout all weekend.
PC,, good round of pics again. There are a lot of those little towns that are almost gone around and sometimes interesting photos.
COLBY, liked those pics from Maine.
JIM CG, by all means check out the VA, you earned it. I use it and other than the drive, it's ok.

Morning All
Had a rip roaring Thunder storm go through this morning between 2:30 and 4:00 several power outages in the city and lots of window shaking haven't heard one of those in years.
As Dick has mentioned Dad is indeed very ill at this time. So ill I had to get off the ship. He has several serious issues plaguing him and as the Doctors have stated he could go either way. So yes prayers are very appreciated.
Der John: Once again thanks for the pics as they will come in very handy, when I get back to my project. It'll make this place look like a dive!
And Dick, Phil, Luc etc... The Chandeliers will be will be suspended with 3/4" grade 80 chain welded to 6" I beams, so fill ye'r boots boys but no harrasing the staff.

A quick good morning to you all. Zoe, a cup of the TH to go, please. Thanks, Dick!
Fergie, will be praying for your Dad and for him to pull through this, as well as for you and the rest of the family.
Jerry, good to hear that Sallie is doing better, and that she'll be closer to you at the nursing home. Those long drives can wear a person down.
Well, PC, you turned up a connection to Bill T.'s family there - how about that? Bill, hope those few months go by quickly and you enjoy joining the ranks of our ORF's here.
We got a downpour last night (and the car windows were up, but not quite all the way up, so I'm hoping after I absorbed some of the dampness from the seat with my pants last night, that it's drier this morning). Lowered the temp some, and they're only talking about a high temp of 94 F today. We needed the rain around here.
Inch, maybe that rain also hit up by your fishing spot and will stimulate the fish to bite some. But as you say, sometimes just the break from the usual is good!
Well, I'd better be going. Wk awaits! Continued prayers for Fergie's Dad, Sallie, and all the rest of our ailing ones.
Blessings and prayers,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Mornin' all!
Tough morning this morning! Had to go and pay a bill for $322 and then had to fill up the tank in the van. That was $60! I was out almost $400 and I hadn't even made it to work yet! I hate days that start out like that!
A wind of change flowing through central Indiana will snap our latest bout of hot air....pushing the 90s down south, and providing less humid conditions for today & tomorrow. The dry air, light wind & clear conditions tonight will lead to overnight lows dipping into the 50s! Saturday should be one of the best days we've had in quite sometime...who could complain about sunshine & highs in the low 80s? Not me!
Well, the family should be back from vacation on Sunday. Guess I'll have to do some cleaning before they get home so they can come home to a nice looking place. Gotta get the carb rebuilt on the daughters car too! Should have time for all of it though. Clean tonight and rebuild the carb tomorrow.....no problem!
So whats up with all of you?

You ought to swing by the museum and see if you can find it!
(And it's "Nickel", not "Nickle" )
I knew that. Why didn't I catch that?
Hey, early congrats on the retirement! Yeah, I almost drove on it to Tipton, but I headed south on 213 instead. I wanted to swing by Lapel to see if the CI&W had gotten any further on the repaint of their loco's and the sun was heading down. When I got there I found that they hadn't done anything.....oh well.
Thats pretty cool working for the same RR all those years and seeing all of that history.
Fergie, I'm praying for Dad! Hope he gets better!

Aye Matey........ and I see we need to stay away from the western Carib......this area has very warm waters right now, so DEAN could easily reach Cat 4 or 5 in the Gulf. If that does occur, the off-shore drilling rigs will take a pounding once again, and there goes the gas prices up again !!!!! If that happens, buy ERF and HTS, XOM and CVX because oil will spike again over $75 a barrel, maybe $80. Tell Lisa that the East coast is spared once again.
PAUL: How hight is the water in the creek now? I hear 5 more inches of rain is expected...wow !!
JIM: Did you drink all the coffee this morning ???? The doggone pot was empty once again !!!
Good morning.........
That was an interesting exchange of posts between Philip and Bill. thanks to both. I assure you, I'll be thinking of Philip and Bill next time I'm in Hobbs, IN.
Fergie, we'll be praying for your Dad. There will be no "harassing stuff" on the chandelier installation either.
Dick... I'm not at all worried about all that economic stuff. Every year for my entire life, the news media's chicken little reporting is out to scare people. Yes, the Fed is adding funds to ease the recent credit crunch. It's a global problem. Central banks in Europe, Japan, Australia, and Canada have also added available funds to banks recently. Now, the Fed just made an adjustment to a key interest rate to further ease the credit crunch. A lower dollar value has advantages, too. The exchange rates will be more favorable for US made products to be exported. Exports have been at all time highs recently. If you want more international investors to invest in US companies, I hope you would like a reduction in US corporate income tax rates, that are now the highest in the industrialized world. Meanwhile China subsidizes its employers.

Jeff, you know those SGI Altix 4700 server blades are really a nice item! Wish I had a few of them too!
Mike, as soon as we find a replacement and I get them trained I will have just one job, but until then....
And I like those photos of the old NYC Bridge, makes you wonder about all the abandoned track and bridges out there.
Flip, so glad to see that you made it back into the Diner!
Dick, speaking of weather stations, I need to get a new one. Any recommendations for one in the $50 to $100 range?
Ed, I work for Excel Management Systems, Inc, it is a small minority contractor firm that supports one of the main EPA contractors which is Computer Science Corporation (CSC). We support the National Computer Center (NCC) of the EPA here at the Research Triangle Park (RTP).
Philip, I see the shutter bug virus has hit your fingers there! I love the photos of the CSX and the various cargos in question! Looks like military stuff! Nice bridge image too!
Scott, I see your NSC job is progressing as well. Congrats on the security background check too!
Thoughts and prayers to all in need!
Sorry if I missed anyone!

Morning all!
Yesterday, since my two siblings were gone, mom and I went to the cougar mountain zoo. It's not that big, but we go there because they have tons of parrots, unlike the big zoo. They have cougers, emus, alpackas, cranes, parrots, macaws, lemurs, and the newesr addition, a 15 week old white tiger.
Most of the macaws weren't all too interesting, but a few were. Ejea, a blue and gold, plays peekaboo, by hiding completely under a wing, then popping out screaming "PEEKABOO!!!" Then the next door macaw, Kiwi, will not be out done, and goes down on his swing, and holds on with one toe, upside down. Then the lemurs in the background would scream, causing Payaso, one of the Hyacinths, to hide behind his wing, with his eye peering out.
Well they were certainly amusing.
Let's see... Counting the days left... 5 to go.
Well, see ya later!
Mark

Good evening, the front came through today, now it is very nice out, 61F, DP of 57F and RH of 62% and dropping, so it will be a great night for sleeping, and the next 4 days all look the same. I see that DEAN is taking aim at the Yucatan Peninsula, I sure hope it misses our OJ grove, right ED?

My Dad (retired NKP/N&W Signal Maintainer) said that he looked for his dad's name in the depot at the museum and he couldn't find it. It must have been painted over. at some time.
It will be 98 years when I retire at the first of 2008 and as I have no children, it will be the end of an era.
The Tipton depot as shown in my daily posts still stands on N. Main St. in Tipton and is HQ for the Signal Maintainer, Track Supervisor and section gang as well as a welder and a backhoe operator. It is an NYC design from when the NYC controlled the LE&W and is a smaller version of the NKP depot in Lafayette IN.

Hey, Dick, you must have me confused with PC - I'm not a big coffee drinker (unless I was up all night, which last night I wasn't)!
Garry, I'd agree with you about the Chicken Little reporting over the past few years, from financial news this week, to the news tonight (about the possibility - though fairly slim - that a few nursing mothers who take cough medicine could pass on codeine to their children), to whatever the producers think will improve their number of viewers. It's getting to be more news (IMHO) when I find something on the network news that doesn't highlight the newest stressor of the day.... But that's my .
Ah, on the local news tonight, they were talking about a minor league baseball team in our area - possibly a Cardinals farm team. But it'd still be a couple or three years off, even once they get the financial backers lined up.
PC - what you said about the weekend - Yippee, yippee, YIPPEE!!
Duke, those are some nice photos of the garden layout. Thanks for posting them.
....Ahem!... Folks, I have an annnouncement, so Chloe, get the coffee pot started,
and break out some bubbly for those who would like it.
Drum roll, please... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
I found out today that, come next April, I will be becoming a grandfather! (Yeah, I hear you long-time GrandPa's - but this will be my first, so lighten up there.) My daughter & son-in-law won't be trying to avoid knowing if this will be a boy or a girl, so before too much longer I may know if I should be looking at a blue or a pink wooden toy train. Better get working on my layout, so I can run it for the young engineer!
So, how about a toast to Sarah's and Andy's coming attraction!
Blessings,

Jeff, i enjoyed your KCS layout photos very much. Question: next to the engine house in the photo with the switchers.......... I see a strange brown glass tank.... Is that one of those environmentally friendly diesel fuel tanks by chance?????? Have fun!

Evening Gang: The hay was drying out from the 1/4 inch of rain last evening. So it rained again this evening. Another 1/4 inch. I can expect some more tonight but I'll hope that it dosen't.
