Good Afternoon Coffee Clubbers

Time for another installment of the trip report.

As you could see from the shot of the crane, it was getting really late in the afternoon. Just about sundown. But I was right about them moving the work train because something was coming. Heard the horn way off, and we waited as the train got closer.

Finally it came up over the small rise just north of the yard. An AC4400-CW number 4564 along with C30-Super7MP 3809 bringing a long train of empty autoracks through town. Not the best shot due to the sun angle, but here it is anyway.

To me, a train of autoracks is pretty boring. Give me a short mixed freight behind an old 2-8-0 anytime. But you take what you're given. Here's the last shot of the day, with just enough sun glinting off the new sides of one autorack to make the shot interesting.

Next day, after a pretty full day of sightseeing in town (it's really a great place to visit), the kids were again ready to catch some rest at the hotel. I was sure the tracks passed closer to our hotel than the station itself (with our hotel room window open the night before, I could clearly hear the squeek of the wheels on tight curves). During the day, while up on the highest hill in town, I had a chance to use my binoculars to scout out the line and sure enough I figured out where we could fairly easily walk to it. So Fran and I set off for one last bit of railfanning.

It may not have been the best spot in the world to catch trains, but at least we had the sun to our backs this afternoon. Wasn't too long before something came along. Here we have another AC4400-CW, number 4541, along with what I think is another ES44AC, number 4617, pulling a long northbound train made up entirely of gondolas loaded with taconite pellets.

That heavy load, coupled with some serious uphill grades, required mid train helpers. Here they come, SD70ACe number 4001 and C30-Super7R number 3731.

I figured that would be it for the day, but we had one last opportunity waiting for us.

Regards

Ed

And the final installment.......

As much to keep busy as anything else, we wandered along the mainline in the direction of the yard and station. I didn't really expect to catch another train in the short amount of daylight we had left. But then we heard a horn, coming from the same direction as the train that had just passed. I thought it was strange to have another train coming down the mainline so close behind, but we got ourselves in position in any case.

Finally it came around the curve, our old friend the work train from yesterday. Pretty much the same consist. And it still had C30-7 number 3586 on the front end.

Here's another one as she came right past us. This is one of Fran's first railfan pictures. She's getting the hang of it.

As the back end came by, we could see that SD40-2 number 3185 was still pulling (or pushing?) up the rear. I'm still not clear why such a short work train warranted two locomotives, but I took photos anyway. As he went by I almost instinctively motioned for him to give us a blast on the horn, and he obliged.

And as it headed out around the curve I snapped off one last shot. Losing light but still worth posting.

And that was it. Next morning we bought the last of the souvenirs, checked out of the hotel, and headed back down the highway towards home. We passed a couple of crossings on the trip home, but nothing worth photographing. But it was a great trip.

Hope you enjoyed some of the photos and play-by-play.

Best regards

Ed

Evening, Chloe. How about a nice steak - medium, Chloe - and asparagus, please? Thanks, JR! Smile [:)]

Ed - more excellent photos, and Fran's getting the hang of railfanning, all right! Thumbs Up [tup] I was a little surprised at them hauling the taconite in gondolas, Confused [%-)] but I guess it works for them. Definitely a great trip. So what do you do next year to top that?Wink [;)]

Mike - also excellent shots of the IC - are all the tracks in your first (yard) photo part of the yard?  Have you heard any more news from Jerry on how Sallie's doing? Angel [angel]Angel [angel] It does sound like your weather there has been slightly cooler than ours here. I saw one thermometer over lunch today that was reading 105 F (let's see, that'd be about 40.5 C, huh?). Still plenty hot, no matter which way you measure it. Shock [:O]

I'll be working on my steak over at the corner booth and see who else comes in.

Blessings,

Evening Gang: We hauled the calves out to the sale barn this morning. Mary Ann did all right. She got $1.12/ lb for one of the calves and nothing less then $1.10. On the way back the check engine light came on again. When we stopped for breakfast I checked under the hood and couldn't find any problems and everything was normal on the gauges. I tood the truck by our repair guy and he checked the puter but found nothing. He said drive it and when we can leave it for a bit he'll do a more detailed check, no charge. I love those words. This afternoon I hauled some hay and watched a couple of UP trains go by.

Ed There were a couple of FEX auto cars in one of the trains and I saw a FEX loco in a train yesterday. The pictures are great. So when are you guys coming NOB? Where was the Taconite coming from? That's interesting.

Rob: I take it the your wife wasn't looking over your shoulder when you wrote that comment.

Well I guess it's going to rain. The guys came and cut the hay and I washed one of the pick-ups today.

So I haven't seen Sue in lately. I wonder where she is?

I've got an appointment with the VA doc tomorrow. He's a new one to me since my old doc left.  Now I've got to break in a new one.

Time to cut out.

Good Night All

I haven't posted here in a while so I thought I would post this idea. What would you think of having a MRR project forum to replace the MR 70th anniversary forum? The 70th anniversary forum is pretty useless because almost no one posts there. Having a project forum would spread out traffic in other forums and yield a place to talk about upcoming projects like "I'm going to kitbash ________". It could also be used to talk about DCC installations and scratchbuilding projects too.

So what do you think?

CPRail, are you thinking of a particular topic? They have had forums (fora..?) from individual persons on specific topics from time to time - like Joe Fugate's ones on scenery and others on topics like DCC, etc. That would just be a matter for whoever wants to start a topic and share tips or raise questions on doing a particular thing (such as kitbashing structures, etc.).

Or maybe I'm missing what you're really asking here. Fill us in more about what you mean, please.

Hey Paul, You're right, haven't seen Sue in for a bit - maybe she went on a trip with her hubby?

I know nothing about cattle prices - was that a pretty good or average price on the cattle you sold? I just know what I have to pay for the finished product. Wink [;)] Hope you get your engine mystery on the truck figured out. Oh, and good luck with breaking in the new doctor - that can be its own hassle at times.

In a while, I'll be doing that myself (just not at the VA, though maybe I should check with them; I am a vet and we have a local facility here). After I get through my legal matters, I am switching doctors, since my doc doesn't seem too aware of what the co$t of the procedures he wants me to have done are going to be for me. I think they should require those going through medical schools to be able to explain to their patients the financial impact of whatever the patient is expected to have done. Just my personal rant, though... SoapBox [soapbox]

I hear what you say about washing the vehicles and/or getting the hay cut. Usually, just washing the car will do it for me, but it hasn't worked the past couple of weeks (I tried having the car washed...).

please & thank you. Going to work late on projects tonight.

***Paul, hauling hay AND watching UP trains go buy, is what I would call an almost perfect day. I say "almost", because a perfect day right now (here in droughtville) would include a downpour. Oh, and you are correct, wife was not looking over my shoulder. But, which comment were you refering to: how I can obtain more trains or the inlaw thing?Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Both equally tricky topics.

***Ed, kinda sorry your trip photos have come to an end. Found them all quite enjoyable.

***Scott, thought of one place you might really enjoy checking out while in GA..

The Southern Museum where you can see The General.

There is also a tiny little loco in another part of the museum,

but I don't remember what it was. The museum is in Kennesaw.

Oh, it also details the Civil War's Great Locomotive Chase.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers

Just a quick check in before hitting the hay, so to speak.

C.G.Jim - So what do you do next year to top that?

Nest year's convention will be down in Cuautla, Morelos.  Long time Coffee Clubbers will recall that that's the home of Mexico's only operating steam locomotive (and narrow gauge at that).  So we're definitely looking forward to next year's get together.

For those of you not familiar with the 279, she's a Baldwin 2-8-0, outside frame, constructed around 1921.  Originally an oil burner, she has now been converted to run on diesel.  Here I am in the cab.

And here she is smoking it up at the depot.

Coming north of the border?  That's easy, Thanksgiving.  But when are we planning on getting up as far as DFW?  Won't be this year.  Outside possibility it could happen next year.

The taconite was for the Mexican steel company "Hylsa".  They have mines and pelletizing plants in Colima and Manzanillo, both on the west side of the country.  So one of those two places.

8/15/07 in Pendleton, Indiana

It's not the greatest video.  My camera isn't really made for video ya know.  The sound is terrible (gotta work on that!) but the trains are cool.  Even got a surprise in the lead loco of the second train!  You don't see them around here much!

Wouldn't ya know.....standing around for 20 minutes and not a soul.  Trains show up and I begin filming and everyone and their brother shows up!

Anyways, here's the clip!

Hello everyone. Anybody care to have some angel food cake from the Amish town south of Champaign? My treat. Good stuff.

I'm concerned about Jerry & Sallie, and I continue being concerned about Luc and Gloria.

Thanks to Jim CG, inch and others who commented on my trip to the wedding.

Inch, I'm sorry to learn about the arthritis.  Refresh my memory.... .. Are you the guy who brought together 12 kids and grandkids to make a foot? (12 inches; get it?) Big Smile [:D] I like the photos you posted. What CSX line is that?

JR, I hope you get a chance to meet Duke in Grand Rapids.  I found out he's a really good guy when in Detroit.

Ed .those Mexican Pictures are great. Not sure about the engineer, though. Wink [;)]

Mark... it's great you are saving for the 4-8-8-4. Do you have Sherman Hill on your layout yet?

Scott ........ now that your with NS, I bought some of their stock today. I expect really great things from you. Smile [:)]

Rob........I hope the bathroom looks great when you're done. I'm thinking if Shelley painted a bathroom here, however, I'd just leave it alone. Wink [;)]

Dick...yes, I've seen the Athearn diesel catalog. Impressive. I'm interested in the Colorado & Southern SD-40's.

Paul...best wishes with the new VA doc. Stay healthy!

Evenin' Guys!

I'll just have a milk- Love the stuff.

Jim: Sorry... but 70* is enough for me... I like 60*-70*...

Garry: Well if you can figure out how to cram it into a 4x8... No I'm joking. I model in colorado, freelanced. Yes I do know the big boys were never recorded down there, but there are rumors of one being in denver at a time.

Big Boy update: Still the same amount in the nest egg... but I realized something. With my birthday coming up, and I asked for money from the relatives... I have a Serious chance at TWO count 'em TWO big boys!

But then again... I could get a FEF instead... Same price at MB klein... FEF or two big boys.

Once again I can't decide.

Morning everyone!

Well, looks like we can crank the temps back up again today!  It's not bad now, but later it's going to get toasty again.

Some Hoosiers are cleaning up after a storm night.  A complex of storms, that developed just south of Lake Michigan, plowed through north central Indiana...causing wind damage & a possible tornado.  You can clearly see the path of the storm with this storm report map of the region from last night.

REST OF TODAY:  One-step outside this morning will be all the proof you need that today will be a very humid day.  With dewpoints in the upper 60s & low 70s, and highs this afternoon in the 90s........heat indices will be approaching 100 & maybe higher!

The atmosphere will be very unstable, and moisture-laden....meaning storms should develop with daytime heating.  Though the greatest threat for severe weather will be along & south of I-70....any storms that develop will have heavy rain & dangerous lightning potential.

Should be an interesting day weatherwise!

Garry, we don't see too many of Ed's Ferromex's around these parts!  That unit is a long way from home!

I too am a bit concerned by some of the folks that we haven't heard from in a while.  Some of those people (and there's quite a list of them right now) have some very serious health concerns.  I pray they're OK.

Mornin, David since your buyin and schools startin , I'll not be to hard on the bill and order steak. Zoe I'll have the biscuits n gravy, ham n coffee today. So far no kids today, guess #3 DIL didn't get called into work

Hot yesterday and another hot one today with a slim chance of rain. Went up to Charleston last night and it was 7 degrees hotter in town than out in the country. At least it's suppose to cool off some here this weekend.

Nothing from JERRY yet, I'm kinda worried bout him and Sally.  I may try a call him later this evening.

JIM CG,, All the tracks are part of the yard, but one and it's the main. There was a round house and several other building standing there [on the left side] till the late 70's, when they were torn down.

PC,,, liked the video, I've never seen one of those Mexican engines round here. I think the guy on the bike just wanted his picture taken. I'm the same way bout some of those missing.

GARRY,,,the CSX track are the St. Louis-Indy, PRR [coal train]. The same one that runs past here. The other CSX is on the NYC tracks. And the 12 kids and grandkid to make a foot, might be true. We have 6 kids and 22 grand's, with #23 due in 3 weeks.

RYAN, glad your feelin better. How long are you gonna have the two jobs, not permanent I hope?

Here's the last of the pics from last weekend. These are of a NYC bridge on the Cairo tracks [long gone], south of Tremble,

A piece of rail and some rotting ties are bout all that left

There's a couple three more bridges on that line I want get pics of, but they'll have to wait till the leaves are off

I got this one last Thursday after Mother called on way home n said grab the camera and meet her outside. MOW crew working on the tracks on the old Cumberland road bridge

Not big plans for the day [staying cool], finish the camper and start loading it, then take the bus over for an oil change. Hope ya'll has a gooden

Good morning everyone, I hope all of you who have money in the stock market to buy MRR stuff, or your own RR, have switched all your $$ from stocks to Treasuries (cash). This sub-prime mortgage fiasco is now creeping up the ladder to banks and other mortgage lenders who were thought to be on solid footing.....result.....stock markets is in a free fall.

DAVID: Thank you for buying breakfast, but Cloe said you lost all your $$ in the stock market and CC bounced, I had to pay my own breakfast, what gives David ????Sad [:(]

JEFF: I see that you found the thread on the Gen forum and gave some excellent advice, people can get into big trouble using those chems.

RYAN: Nice job on the page design !!!! And I Sign - Ditto [#ditto] Jeff on the blade server, I want one !!!!

A NOTE from FERGIE: I received an email from our good friend Fergie last night, his dad is in the hospital and not doing too well with a blood infection, prayers are certainly needed guys.

FLIP: It looks like Florida is going to dodge the bullet with soon to be hurricane Dean, as it is expected to pass to the south of the islands and take aim at the Yucatan Peninsula, and that is getting TOO closde to our good friend Ed and our OJ supply.

ED: Sox down 6-5, Coko on 2nd, no outs, last of the 9th, can't get him in. Manny made the last out swinging at a ball up near his eyes!!!!!!!!Censored [censored]Banged Head [banghead]

Time to get going with todays chores, the part to repair the Davis weather station rain guage arrived, but the solar panel would not slide into the new base replacement. After a discussion with FS, I need to sand/file the edges a bit to allow it to slide into the holder. Then we can remount the station out back and get accurate reports once again.

See you guys at lunch,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Good Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Just back from the morning walk and ready for some good, hot, strong coffee.  Coffee from here in Veracruz, of course.

Phil - nice short video.  Yup, an FXE unit for sure.  Nice catch.  I couldn't make out the number or type, but the paint scheme is unmistakeable.  I suppose that's a "legal alien" locomotive?

Ryan, nice website.  I didn't realize you were with the EPA.  Or is your firm just doing contract work for them?

Garry - the picture of your trip that I liked the best was the one of the small bobber caboose beside the crane.  You don't get to see very many of those anymore.

Dick - that hurricane is still a long way off, although it is on track for the Yucatan.  We're actually heading in that direction tomorrow, but we should be on our way back before the hurricane strikes.

Hasta luego

Ed

It was a GEVO I think, but I didn't catch the number either.  Frankly, I was busy trying to keep the people out of the shot.  Oh, and we don't mind those crossing the border at all!

I did some other railfanning this week.  These are big pics, so be warned!

This was kind of an interesting train.

Then I headed on up to my parents place to do some railfanning. Not much happening though.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Prototype%20Train%20Photos/Picture041.jpg

So I headed over to Lapel, Indiana where the home of the Central Indiana & Western RR is. They only have four loco's and 10 miles of track, but it's a cool little shortline. The big surprise was that they're repainting the loco's (sort of). I don't think they're done though.

Here's the before of each of them.......

And here's the after.......

As to the forth loco, my bet is that this little guy isn't going to see any new paint.

Later, on the way home I came across so MOW equipment out by the house.

Norfolk Southern Update:

Colby: Sooner or later, I'll be able to snag a few pictures. But I will be there to work, not take photos, so it won't be a priority of mine and probably won't happen right away.

Ok. At least the sequirty guards won't bother you.

Hey guys. I'll have a bottle of Maine Root Beer. (yes there is sutch a thing as Maine RB found only at L.L. Bean)

Pics from the Songo River Queen in Harrison Maine, (never mind spelling errors)

History Lession: (PC wake up!!!!!!) The Songo River Queen opperates on Long Lake (which I think is 20-15 miles long, The area around the dock were the River Queen docks was once a 5 star resorte. People would arrive by boat from portland through a series of 20 somthing locks using the rivers that flowed from the area. When the railroads cames in they took passengers and freight away from the River Boats.

Here she is comming into dock, Looks like it's steam powerd but gess again. There's a diesle engine that powers 2 paddle wheels.

as we head to the songo river the bridge swings open, Oringally that was a draw bridge untill it was replaced in the 1980's I think.

the lake is the town's airport. I saw this one lead as we were waiting for the boat.

PC, Jeff, Rob, (espacilly Rob). This was take on your behalf.

Dock here and get a snack,or Lunch, and go fishing.

1800's lock tech. the gates of the locks are still manpowerd, one of only 2 manpowerd locks in the country.

Lunchtime here!

Colby, I started going there in the early 70's and I've been there many times since.  It's an awesome place to visit, no doubt!  Now if you want to go somewhere a bit more off the beaten path, look up Jackman, ME., or Long Pond, ME. and then you're getting out there!  (Yes, I've been to those places too!)  We go camping up there sometimes.  You can really get away from it all up there!  Here's our campsite from a couple of years ago.

VERY relaxing!  But you do have to watch out for these guys!

They can mess up your campsite quick!

Jerry, glad to hear Sallie is better.  We were starting to get concerned!

EDIT:  Darn!  I hate when it does that scrolling thig!  Does anyone know how to fix that?

Coffee to go, please and thank you. Busy rest of the day ahead.

***Jerry, glad Sallie is doing better. Sending you both healing thoughts.

***Philip, nice photos. First one I pull up, the engine needs a new light bulb. Can't miss that I&W switcher dressed in it's pretty baby blue. But the one photo that scared the c*** out of me was that charging MOOSE-PLUS. Have been around a lot of moose with my work, but never saw one quite like that. Wink [;)]

102F here and no rain in sight. Our well is down to around 40lbs from it's usual 65lbs. Pray for rain!  Have a great day all. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Mornin' guys!

I'll have a cinnamon roll and a milk.

Darn. I guess posting on the 2nd to last post of the page makes no one read the page!

Oh well. Might as well re-announce it.

Well guys, looks like I have a serious chance at TWO count 'em TWO big boys. Here's my plan. I have nearly enough for the 1st big boy, which I'll order. I'll then I'll spend maby $100-$120 on freight cars and scenery, then save some more, and order either A second big boy, or FEF-3.

At this point I can't decide.

Mark.

They alternate back and forth.  Look in the third pic and the other one is on.

Yeah, it's pretty bright.  It's pretty old too.  It has the rounded corners and stuff, so I think it's a first series loco.

That's a statue that I found along Rt.1 south of Belfast.  It is kind of disterbing, huh?

108 F !   Said the dash thermometer in the truck as I drove home from running errands in town. Officially it's 104 F. We chose not to retire in Phoenix, but now Phoenix has moved here evidently. The water level is way down.

Jerry says Sallie improved. I'm glad for that. Praying for her continued recovery.

Dick says Fergie's Dad is ill.  We'll include him in our prayers.

Dick also says get out of stocks, but gee, Dick, you should have said that a month ago. Now, it's best to just hold what you have. Buy if you can.  As Warren Buffet says......"I get nervous when others are greedy, and I get greedy when others get nervous." I bought Norfolk Southern (NSC) stock yesterday when a GTC buy order was excercised. Sure, I would have done better today, but..... oh well. The market has had its 10% correction, and the Fed is releasing funds into the bank system. The economy is in good shape and so are corporate earnings. Bsides, I expect great things from NSC with Scott working for them!

Well, time to head for the cool temps in the model train room.

Happy Model Railroading

***I'm learning something new all the time. Now you have me curious if similar locos (in N scale) have alternating lights, too? That would be cool.

Some RR's do that, others don't.  It's up to the RR.  CSX has alternating ditch lights.  As to N scale, I do that, but not the "D" word loco's. Big Smile [:D]
