Thanks luct for sharing your family get-together with us.  You have every reason in the world to be proud!

BTW, luct, one of my good memories was riding on the Canadian Pacific. The trip was in western Canada in the 1950's with CPR's heavyweight equipment. In the Rockies, there was an open observation car (full-length with center third enclosed). I can still smell the pine tress as we approached the spiral tunnels. As we headed home a few days later, we road a train on CPR-SOO to St Paul. It had a CPR steam loco to the US border where SOO diesels took over.

Cheers!

Good Morning All,

Back in the shop constructing gearboxes but making progress.

RT- thanks the the update on Zeke and we'll keep the two of them in our prayers til we here he's home and recuperating.

bob - the layout is crowded enough that I could lose some buildings but the big ones use the sidings over in a corner and I'd lose too much ops. What I'll do is pull the rest of the stuff away and rethink the scenery. I had the lower level set up for ops mainly and the raised section connects to the incline to the upper level. The two track bridge is Walthers. I don't really worry about how prototypical it is, but it looks good and can be bashed about as needed. The Central Valley bridge on the other side of the layout really turned out to be a disappointment though I love the girder bridges they do.

As an aside (non train related) here is a link to what else some of us do on the weekends.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1g1Ld_Ux-I

The video is shakey, but so was the road. Elapsed time for 5.6 miles was 4 minutes 39 seconds I have a friend who is going to try to edit out the shakes if that happens I can repost. CUL,J.R.

That was awesome!  Was that one of the 7's?  Sounded like a covenrty climax.

A happy 4th to all. Not much going on today. Dropped my mother off to take the Logan shuttle. She leaves to go home today. She's been boppin' al over the skies these past few months. Besides coming out for April's service and funeral, 5 of her grandchildren had graduations and one wedding. 3 high school and 2 college. The only problem is they were scattered around at different dates and  here in MA then CA and TX. Actually her flight was round trip from Orange Co, CA. She has to return to CA then will return to TX. At least she can visit w/ my brothers for a while. No rush for her to get home.

Luc,

Nice to see you stop in. Hope things are going better for you.

Philip: Save a spot in the line for me- those are good looking ribs, Can't wait. For now I'll just have some eggs benny and a coffee.

Ed: Nice of you to think of us while out gala vanting around the world. We've been talking about you (ears burning or anything like that). All are hoping you can get back to working on the layout.

Zeke and Jenny: Continued thoughts and prayers for a full recovery. At least you seem to be out of the woods.

Ryan: I think that shrimp will go just dandy with Phil's ribs, any left?

Been detailing my Caravan as I'm posting. Nice way to take breaks from that job. The dashboard reinstall went well, now let's see how the AC will work> Better spit out ice cubes and stay that way for a few seasons.

Back to the wax on-wax off, check in later,

Hi Gang: I just thought I'd stop in and say hello. I mowed the lane again and set the battery charger on the diesel truck. I really need to run it more.

It's raining again east of us and it's moving west. That's unusual for the weather to move west. I don't know if it will get it to us it's in between Ft Worth and dallas now.

I need to get back out and work on the road to the barn. It's getting rutted and needs some gravel. Then I need to sharpen the blades on the other mower and give both of them a grease job.

RT: I'm happy to hear that Zeke is doing better. I hope that he gets home soon. That will help a whole bunch to make him feel better. He certainly been through a lot.

See you all later.

Garry;

I suspect those locomotives were Hudsons or Pacifics.  They were CPR's work horses then.

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

Hey, I'm gonna dash outside before the ice cream truck leaves and get me a cone! Be right back, Zoe!

RT, thanks for the update on Zeke - he sure is a fighter, and I (pray and) expect he'll make it through this all right. Go, Zeke! Bow [bow] Thumbs Up [tup] Bow [bow] Bow [bow]

PC, don't let everyone get all the ribs before I get there! I figure I'll put away half a side by myself. Dinner [dinner] Yum!

JR, that video looked like you had some fun driving that car (whatever model it was). The early part of that road looked like it almost had as many tar patches on it as it had actual road. Wink [;)] Thanks for sharing it!

No rain for us here, though there might be some after the fireworks - or tomorrow. Today, just some clouds most of the afternoon, and hot - about 90 F - Ed would feel right at home here!) Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Luc, nice band you brought in for today's festivities. Thumbs Up [tup] Nice pics of the grandkids (and proud grandparents) too! Still trying to figure if I reconize any of the players in the band... and I'm sure glad that Garry called in the ice cream guy (slurp!). Smile [:)]

Nice fireworks, Bill T. - and speaking of which - PC, we're expecting some more nice boomers and sparklies from you tonight. I've asked the twins to get some popcorn and sodas ready, and I brought my lawn chair to kick back and enjoy the show.

Happy waxing, Bob K. - as for myself, I got a couple of those 3-bay hoppers done (starting to get the hang of them, two more to go), and also put KD's on a few boxcars that still had the old X2F's on 'em. Got out my NP SW1200 (P2K), since our club's going to run trains at one member's layout on Sunday afternoon.

Well, if you'll excuse me, that ice cream cone just started my appetite, and I have a side of ribs over on PC's grill that has my name on 'em. Gotta get started so I'll be done before the fireworks start! Yeah!! [yeah] Ooh, these are pretty heavy, guess I'll have to eat them with both hands. Well, that's all right! Dinner [dinner]

Blessings and a great day for you all,

Hey guys check this quote out

hi everyone this is zeke,

they let me up to roll around for a lil bit in my wheelchair  so I wanted to come outside and post my thank you's to everyone. Its 113 here today so this will be brief. Im glad jenny posted and was blown away by all the response's. thank you.

Well i turns out i had a stroke not a heart attack. I lost some feeling in my legs, but the dr said it may come back, hopeing it does. I know have a pacemaker which is what i was told i should have had in the first place, dang german dr's. the dr here said hes not seen anyone with this many problems at 30 ys old, think he was trying to make me feel good Smile <img src=" border="0" width="15" height="15" /> so anyways i lost alot of blood and my heart stopped beating for 4 minutes  he said while i was under the knife, but im a survivior, i aint going out like that. So i had this horrible infection around my heart and was causing my diflib to mis read and was shocking the heck out of me for a week and causing me not to sleep. CHUCK you were right. My chest looks like i got tracks going all over it. Guess im a true rr fan now! Well they were gonna take out my tumor at the same time until i died , and so now i have to wait. They want me to recover fully from this ordeal first. I am okay i think, still have all my parts and i think they all still work! Hey JIM its hospital gown thurday and im not wearing any underwear, lol! Well guys nurse ratchet is goming to take me away so i will leave you for now. Hello...

Luc...I typed a response earlier and I thought I posted it.  I don't see it.  Don't you love technology? One clue about the steamer long ago was my Dad spent time looking under the cab when loco was changed at the border. He said it had a booster engine. I can't recall much more because I was very young then. Where did all the years go?

Everybody .......thanks much for the fireworks, ice cream (or f.c.), and of course the friendship.

GO  4th!

Hey Zeke,  maybe the cute nurses only show up on the day shift...?Confused [%-)] Dang hospital doesn't have a wireless setup  so you can use a laptop or something and post at your bed? Double-dang, huh? (Heck, sounds like they're doing enough wiring inside of you) Wink [;)] You keep plugging away there (and aggravating the nurse, but I didn't tell you that...)

Jenny, you've got your hands full just keepin' up with Zeke. Thumbs Up [tup] Better eat your Wheaties! Wink [;)]

Zeke, hospital gown, no underwear? That was alot more information then I wanted. No wounder you have the good looking nurses. Jenny has really got ot be speical to put up with that.

Well it's beginning to sound like L.Z. Liz out there. I could sleep through morters, quaid 50s. and 105s going off but not fire works. I'm getting old I guess. Actually I woke up when the stuff stopped firing. No rain on us today but some around the area. The folks that have been flooded out once, are getting it again. I feel for them.

Mary Ann and I picked up a book on the winners of the Medal Of Honor. There on page 80 was Fred Ferguson a friend of ours that I flew with at Ft. Wolters Tex. We were instructor pilots. After he got the Medal he was moved around untill he was assigned somewhere else and we lost contact. I think that we were both a little wild back then.

Well I think that I'll head for bed.

Good Night All

chief--you couldnt be more right, when i got shot it split my breastbone in half almost, will never forget that pain. And of course it was done again, i tell you that is some horrible pain, its almost imbearable, but they have me on a morphine drip, i can just press the little button every 10 min if needed, and i need to.  Plus the nurse is keeping my full of something so i dont feel much.NurseThey moved me to a regular room and now i can have my laptop, so i now will be online some, when I am not passed out. or too loopy from the drugs. The doc told me i will be able to leave tomorrow. I couldnt believe this, i would have thought id be here longer. This is good cuz the hospital food sucks, and i miss my trains, oh and jenny. I mean jenny then trains, ya. I guess i had a blod clot to but they did something all i know is i  cut stitches on my legs too. I must have picked to older persons side cuz all my nurse's are 50+ were are the young cute bubbly ones. Oh well .Jenny told me that i aint here to look at nurses, i tried to argue the point but lost.Wink [;)] They tell me this new thing in my chest is better and its been improved, but i will have to keep being monitored and have to get a new battery in 8 yrs, i feel like some dang cheap toy. All n all im okay now, i am now wheelchair bound though, atleast for a little while, i cant get my legs to work right.. But im alive. for now. I have to come back in a month and they want to do this tumor removal. they tell me its almost a in and out thing, might stay 2-3 days and then go home. Crazy, still not thrilled about someone going in and tickeling my brain. I guess theres room to do so,lol. well maeds are kicking in  Nurse tomorrow is a bunch of Xrayof my legs. so much fun. And dont worry chief there will be no Messy Sneeze

it hurts really bad i already did that once, you want pain have your chest ripped open. Thank you everyone for your support its nice to see i was missed.

By The way i got to see some fireworks from my window they were great, but what was even better is there is a huge train bridge that must span 1200 ft or more will the fire works were going on a laong train went buy it was all black because the fireworks were behind it but it was high in the air and had 4 diesel's pulling it i bet it was around 125 or so. beautiful to see, made me think of all of you guys and gals!

Happy 4th

Good Morning All,

And especially Zeke.  You must be getting better if you can gripe about the nurses. But Jenny - that ones a keeper mate. Glad to hear you're up and about and getting the pumphouse in order. Now for the control box and the two motivators and you'll be good to go.

Jerry - the car gets up to just about 107 by the gear chart at the dip in the saddle. I don't think they get much over 115 ever though that's plenty fast when you're sitting 3" off the ground. The car is really stable though and lots of fun to drive though I have to add a second pad to the seat at the hillclimb because it's so bumpy.

Philosphy 102. I decided to keep the tracks and shrink the buildings to suit in the built up areas. Since I have the continuous running up above and a narrow set of shelves there, the only real opportunity to do ops is the lower level. It will all end up less than realistic but after all it is my layout, right?

For those of you using N scale, what sort of diesel locomotive works well? I see Proto has just announced RS-2's which would fit well at the museums' N layout in New Haven colors. How about Kato? A lot of the older locomotives seem prone to failure after just a few hours work. Is that the case generally? The display stuff gets a real workout on the weekends as the model railroads are a big attraction with the kids and any sort of advice especially as regards longevity would be greatly appreciated.   Time to pick up tools and get to it.  CUL,J.R.

Good morning, Zoe - I'll have a cup of mocha for a change, and one of Bill T.'s donuts, please.

Zeke, good to hear that you're about well enough to kick out go home and play nurse with Jenny...Evil [}:)]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Hey, I understand that somebody made a run to AutoZone and brought a bag back that they took to the operating room when they were operating on you - wonder what that was all about?Wink [;)] Seriously, be glad that it's only every 8 years on the battery, it could've been like those R/C cars that Radio Shack carries around Christmas (boy do they eat up the batteries!). Shock [:O]  You (and Jenny) keep taking care of yourself, and we'll keep the prayers going for you.

GMTRacing wrote:

JR, there's what some of the longer-time Diner (and Coffee Shop before that) people call the 'Teffy Rule' about that: "If you don't like the way I run the layout, don't let the door hit you on the way out." (loosely paraphrased, that is...) Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] If it works for you, and you're happy with it, that's the ticket! Thumbs Up [tup]

Well, breakfast is done, and I need to get out of here. Weather in Cape Girardeau area is supposed to be some scattered thundershowers today, but not quite as warm. See everyone later!

Mornin' everyone!

Looks like an off and on wet day around here, but thats OK, we got our fireworks in last night.  We were shooting them right up until midnight.  Isolated thunderstorms are possible today as a couple of storms may contain gusty winds and heavy downpours.

Hey Jeff, how's mom doing?  Feel like I almost know her.

Zeke, glad to see you're getting around!  Thats quite an ordeal you've been going through.  Sounds like you're mostly out of the woods for now though, huh?  Can't be feeling too good about revisiting the hospital in a month or so though.  Oh, and it sounds like you had the best view of the fireworks in the whole house!  Heck, your view was better then mine, and mine was great!

J.R., I model in N, but only steam.  I do however have a bunch of friends who model the "D" word in N and they mostly swear by Atlas loco's.

Morning, think I'll have the farmers special n coffee Zoe.

Weathers turned hot, humid n rainy here, had enough rain here last evening, to fill the ditches and bring the creek over its banks and over the road, and that takes a lot of rain really quick. Don't know how much we got, the rain gage got knocked over.

They did get the fireworks in over to Marshall though, they had a 40-50 minute show planned, but shot it off in 20 [had another threat of rain coming], so it was a 20 minute finally. Air was heavy so no altitude and the smoke was thick on the ground [of course we were down wind].  Casey got rained out, so we may slip over there n watch them tonight

ZEKE,, sorry to hear bout the problems, but mighty glad your doing betters. That new wiring ought to do the trick, it did for little brother. We'll be keeping you n Jenny in our thought

Dick,, we had several days of cool weather, but it didn't last long enough for me. Plan on eaten fried green maters and cucumber tonight, first bunch out of the garden.

GMT,, I think your idea of operating over scenery is the way I'd go. Really like the video, kinda reminds me of a couple roads rounds, we used to rat race on.

ED,,, glad your trips going well, hope you bring back a bunch of photos for us.

LUC you n Gloria have mighty fine granddaughter there, and you two are looking ok too.

Best get busy, need ta roll Macs backside out of bed n pick up sticks, so we can finish mowing this afternoon. Hope ya'll has a gooden n stay safe

Look at the 0-6-0T next to grand daughters. (Don't tell Fergie, he'll be cornering the market for 0-6-0T's next.)

And your Point would be....Angel [angel]

I went to the LHS this morning and well there it was, the cutest little 0-6-0 Tank engine by Mantua. $65 and with a DCC plug fitted, very heavy and... 25% OFFBig Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

That makes ... count them now, 3  0-6-0's

Anyway just thought I'd share that with ya.

Later All

Good noontime everyone, well almost noon for some, afternoon for others, and morning to still others...ohh the h.. with it , just HI !!!

The sun is trying to make an appearance, it is 72F, 86% RH and DP of 68F here, very humid and tropical feeling. We just did get the cooking done outside yesterday before the showers set in, the kids got to enjoy the pool with it's 80F temp, the adults just enjoyed a nice 4th holiday.

I have a SAFETY NOTICE for all members of the DINER. As safety officer for the Diner, it has been brought to my attention that there has been far too many accidents using power and hand tools by the members. So, I have posted a description of each tool and what they are used for.......

DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your soda pop across the room, splattering it against that freshly-stained heirloom piece you were drying.
WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under
the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and
hard-earned guitar calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to
say, "Yeou sheeeet...."

ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning pop rivets in their holes
until you die of old age.

SKIL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.

PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of
blood-blisters. The most often used tool by all women.

BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor
touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board
principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable
motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal
your future becomes.

VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt
heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer
intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

WELDING GLOVES: Heavy duty leather gloves used to prolong the conduction
of intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable
objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside
the wheel hub you want the bearing race out of.

WHITWORTH SOCKETS: Once used for working on older British cars and
motorcycles, they are now used mainly for impersonating that 9/16 or ½ socket you've been searching for the last 45 minutes.

TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood
projectiles for testing wall integrity.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after
you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly
under the bumper.

EIGHT-FOOT LONG YELLOW PINE 2X4: Used for levering an automobile upward
off of a trapped hydraulic jack handle.

TWEEZERS: A tool for removing wood splinters and wire wheel wires.

E-Z OUT BOLT AND STUD EXTRACTOR: A tool, ten times harder than any known
drill bit, that snaps neatly off in bolt holes thereby ending any possible
future use.

RADIAL ARM SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops
to scare neophytes in to choosing another line of work.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of
everything you forgot to disconnect.

CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 24-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A very large pry bar that
inexplicably has an a ccurately machined screwdriver tip on the end
opposite the handle.

AVIATION METAL SNIPS: See hacksaw.

TROUBLE LIGHT: The home mechanic's own tanning booth. Sometimes called a
drop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, "the su nshine vitamin,"
which is not otherwise found under cars at night. Health benefits aside,
its main purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at about the same rate
that 105mm howitzer shells might be used during, say, the first few hours
of the Battle of the Bulge. More often dark than light, its name is
somewhat misleading.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids
and for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your
shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips
screw heads. Women excel at using this tool.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to
convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws.

AIR COMPRESSOR: A machine that takes energy produced in a coal-burning
power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into compressed air that
travels by hose to a Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench that grips rusty
bolts which were last over tightened 30 years ago by someone at Ford, and
instantly rounds off their heads. Also used to quickly snap off lug nuts.

PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or b racket
you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short.

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is
used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent
to the object we are trying to hit. Women primarily use it to make gaping
holes in walls when hanging pictures.

MECHANIC'S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of
cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly
well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic
bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic
parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in
use.

DAMMMMIT TOOL: Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage
while yelling "DAMMMMMIT" at the top of your lungs . It is also, most
often, the next tool that you will need!

Now please use these tools carefully!!

MIKE: We have had our first meal of zuchinni squash, excellent flavor, and the earliest that we have ever had this squash ( global warming ? ) Beets are almost ready as well as Spinach.

FERGIE: ANOTHER 0-6-0??? Now your trying to corner the market on 0-6-0's ?????  Quick everyone , get to your LHS's !!!!!

ED: Any "Bergs" up there today ? Sox won again and the YANKEES LOST ...YEEEEESSSSSSSS !

time for lunch, see you guys later
