This is for those who may be thinking about dropping out of school.
About nine years ago, a friend of mine told me he was going to drop out of school (10th grade) and land himself an easy job making big money and he'd have fancy cars and lots of women and be able to party all the time. I looked him straight in the eye, backed him up against a wall and told him "No, you won't! You won't do any of those things. I'll tell you what you'll do. You'll find out that you shot yourself in the foot. The employers with the good paying jobs will take one look at your educational background, see that you're a drop-out and show you the door. Oh, you'll get a job, some little job that a drop-out can get. Maybe scraping off trays at a cafeteria or sweeping the floor at McDonalds or scrubbing toilets in expensive hotels. Then the boss man is going to come around at the end of the day to see how you've done and he's going to say oh, you missed a spot and there's another spot over there, and you didn't get this spot. You'll want to grab him and pound his face in. Instead, you're going to suck all that pain back down inside and you're going to scrub those spots, until they're shiny clean. And on Friday you'll go pick up your paycheck and you'll hang onto that job like it's gold, because when you can't get anything else, that kind of job is gold! And if you can do that, you can be the president of Chase Manhatten, own multi-national corporations, if you can do that. Most people can't do it! How do I know? I've been there! Stay in school, give yourself a fighting chance and you just might be able to make your dreams come true.". He decided to stay in school and went on to college. He's now pretty well off and is studying to become a radiologist at a major university. Know what he says is the secret of his success? A friend who knew what he was talking about threw him against a wall and talked some sense into him.

Evening Gang: Today went pretty well. We went to see our lawyer this morning. He introduced us to his nephew to handle our little problems. Our lawyer is Jack Borden. He's only 98 years young and still practicing. Today was the first day of his 71st year in practice. He's known Mary Ann since she was born and her fathers family and her mothers family. He is full of stories and when we visit him we end up listening to his stories for hours. It's a good thing that he dosen't charge us by the hour. I've known him for 37 years since Mary Ann and I got married. He hasn't changed a bit in that time. He's quite a guy. One of the things we talked to his nephew about was the frac pit that the drilling company hasn't filled up yet. They said they wanted to use it for some more wells. In 2 years they haven't even been out to check it to see if it was still there. This pit covers almost 5 acres and is lined with black plastic. Anyway he told us to call the Texas Railroad Comimision. We did and 2 hours later the inspector was at the pit. He said that it should have been covered up after 1 year. After that they would have had to get a permit for it. The drilling company is going to get a letter to fill it or permit it. Guess who is going to fight the permit?
I got over to the track for a little while. They are putting in another switch to add some more sidings for storing diesels during the meet. The meet starts Wednesday and runs through Saturday. Sunday is a pack up and head home day.
Ryan: I'll give it a try soon.
Jeff: That's a good story. My son teaches drop outs. I'll show it to him.
Well Mary Ann is in bed so I'll join her.
Good Night All
Evenin', Chloe - I'll have a cup of coffee with a slice of that apple pie and some vanilla ice cream on top, please!

Hey, Ryan, that sounds like you're talking about my physique after one of PC's all-you-can-eat breakfast bars - careful there!
Dave, Jeff gave you some good advice (hint, hint...)! Try to stay out of trouble for a while, okay?
Colby - I guess I shouldn't tell you that our schools down here in Missouri have been off for about two weeks so far, should I? Good that you're about to be off for the summer - do you usually have very many snow days off there?
Paul - from the past several days of w**k, it's getting hard to tell if you're retarded or not. You did retire, right? Well, at least you're getting a bunch of the chores around the farm done.
I was just wondering - maybe all the big locos that Fergie's been getting are so his steam locos don't think the diesels are about to take over the MESS(tm)? Second mainline, huh? What projects are you taking on this sea voyage, by the way?
Didn't look like the Cardinals did very good at all tonight. Here I thought they were going to be doing better (not for long, apparently)... Hopefully, they'll snap out of it really soon.
Stopped by our used CD store and got a couple of CDs (about $8 and $6 for each of 'em). Once I buy two more, I'll have my card filled and get another CD for free. Pretty good deal, though they don't always have the ones I want every time I go in to check. Probably around 2/3rds of my CD collection came from that place. Good way to stretch the dollars!
Time for me to head home and work on sawing some for the night. See you folks in the morning!
Blessings and a good night's rest,

Good evening to anyone still awake...first time in Diner today...yup, another busy day. Ordered the Power Supply for son #2's PC that got taken-out by lightening, also more RAM, he only had 256mb and wondered why things were hanging too much. Then it was up in the gardens to rototill for the next 2 hours until lunch. The afternoon was spent doing some maintenance and sealing all the micro cracks in the driveway that developed over the winter.
RYAN: Easier day today, tomorrow it is going to shower all day, so I have plenty of mags to read including the latest TRAIN and MRR issues. Then, if I get time, son #2 still has TWO more PC's down from the lightening strike, the wife has some kind of a wheel barrow that needs assemby also. Ohh, and I need to learn all the new features of Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 too. Whoever said that I would be BORED in retirement must be one lazy individual.
Happy Birthday Monique !!! I hear that you are receiving something special today. shhhhhhhhhhhhhh
GARRY: That is one nice layout!!! Can you give us a shot from elevation to show more of your layout?
ED: What a game Shilling pitched...as you probably know, he missed a no-hitter in the last of the 9th with 2 outs!!! Schilling waved off a call from Veritek for a slider and threw an outside fastball instead. And listen to this, the last time this happened was when Padro was with the Red Sox, and he missed his no-hitter by waving off the last pitch call by Veritek.....you would think they would learn.
LISTEN TO THIS ONE !!! The news at 11pm just had a follow-up story about the vandalizing of flags off the graves of vets. Everyone had "assumed" that it was done by teenagers with too much time on their hands...but the culprits have been found, and they have FOUR (4) legs!!!! That's right...FOUR legs. Some trees that were causing damage to grave sites were being cut down, and low and behold several flags were found in holes in the tree, placed there by squirrels for nesting!!. Some people failed to believe it until a caretaker cutting grass saw a flag on the ground being ( what he thought ) blown by the wind. As he tried to retrieve the flag he saw a squirrel making off with the flag...it made TV news !!! Now the "doubting Thomas's believe!!
MRR UPDATE: The mailman delivered the new manual for my Wireless NCE as well as a new PROM that I need to install, so that is another project for tomorrow if I get the time.
JEFF: It's too bad that more kids in High School don't have friends like you around Jeff to help them see the mistake they are making by dropping out. Having been a manager in the electronics field for the last 20 years before I retired, I have seen some very sad situations with young men applying for jobs. The spelling was 3rd grade level, forget math, and they dressed for the interview like they just got out of bed. No GED and No High School Diploma = NO HIRE many, many times, very sad.
Time to hit the sack, see you guys for breakfast, whose cooking ?

gear-jammerPhilip, How is your layout progressing? You promised photos.
Philip, How is your layout progressing? You promised photos.
Sorry, I didn't mean to take so long to get back to you all. Progress is being made, but time is more the problem. I've got plenty of inspiration now, that's for sure!
I've been working primarily on the interchange area and it's myriad of trackwork. I started with a code 70 three way turnout and began working from there, but I ran into some big problems. I could have solved them, but it would have set me back months, so I abandoned that and moved to plan B. The original plan called for the class 1 to be code 70 rail and the shortline to be code 55. Now I'm doing the whole thing in code 55 instead. It's way easier anyways. I'll post some pics at the end of this weekend. I ought to have most of the interchange done by then.
BTW, both of you are coming along very well on your layouts! You two ae both part of that inspiration I was talking about earlier.
BTW, I have no idea where the smilies ad in this post came from. It's not in the post when you veiw it in the preview mode. It looks like the forum software just decided to add it in. It also decided that I had "non-matching quotes" when I went to post, but I checked and it was set up PERFECTLY. This happens to me from time to time. Do you guys get this too?

Morning
Jeff- having power pack trouble. The only way to get the trains to go is to have the thing at full bore. the track is spotless, wires are in the right spot, only one engine is on the track, 3-4 cars coupled to the engine, no heavy weight cars. The train does not move untill the throttle is at 80% and it moves like it's at 25%. I know there is nothing wrong with the engine. I'm thinking of bringing it to the GFMRRC to see if they can help. and yes I made sure the power button was on.
BWT- if anyone knows how to fix power packs please email me or post it.
Thanks

actually this year there was only 2 snowdays. one in december or January. the other was on Valintines Day.
Jeff- it's happend with ALL my engines, my 0-6-0 (Bachman), 0-4-0 (modelpower), NYC (unknown), Santa Fe F7 (Life-Like), Santa Fe FA7 can't use cause of the motor trouble. Needs new motor.
I'll get a video on so you can see whats going on.

Good evening to all.....a very slow moving front stalled over us this morning and rained at the rate of 2.3" per hour for short bursts. It has been cloudy, foggy at times, rain at times, and a cool 59F all day. No clearing until tomorrow afternoon. So this was a perfect day to organize the train room a bit, get rid of all the old computer programs that were for win 95, 98, ME, or outdated by newer revs.
I tried to get some train photos that someone sent me in email, into Adobe Photoshop, but they had sent the photos from their AOL account, and for some doggone reason, the program doesn't recognize them. I can save them into a folder in "My Photos" in Xp or Vista OK, but when I try to download in Adobe..no go. This only seems to happen with emails from AOL with photo attachments. They have a >jpeg extension too. I don't have any trouble with photos that others send in email, why AOL ?? Have any of you experienced this problem?
COLBY: The power supply is highly suspect from what you described. If you have an ammeter and a voltmeter, you can run some tests. Connect ammeter in series with the + lead from the power supply to the track, and a voltmeter across the power supply. Take one of your locos that you know is OK, and place it on the track. Start increasing the voltage on the power supply and note the readings on the ammeter. If the power supply is good, and you know that the loco is good, the current should start to increase on the ammeter as you increase the voltage. Let me know what happens.
Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,
Finally I can report that I have resolved most of the problems with the computer here at home. Managed to locate a decent computer guru who came out and looked at the machine on Monday afternoon. The blockage problem that I had with a lot of sites (like not being able to get to the login screen for this forum) was traced to a malfunctioning Norton program. But it also appeared that the file register was corrupted, and the hard drive needed to be reformatted. So I suppose it's a question of whether the Norton problem was related to the file register problem or not. After heading back to the shop with the machine, turned out that the hard drive itself was slightly damaged and recommended to be replaced. At least it doesn't appear that I have lost any significant amount of data. I finally got the computer back last night.
So, email functioning again, and I can login to Trains.com (only necessary when the computer forgets who I am) and post here. Wow, that was a long struggle to finally get things straightened out. One of the problems with living in a small out of the way place like this.
Things are going well out at the orange grove. We're probably 4 months away from starting to harvest the first of next season's crop. But meanwhile we're bringing home some bananas, papayas, the first mangos from our new trees, and lots of chile pequin (small, hot).
Dick - yup, that must have been some game. The pitching has been holding up pretty well so far. Good effort last night by Beckett too. We'll see how it goes tonight with Tavarez.
Hasta luego
Ed
Evening Gang: I spent the day over at the track getting ready for the meet. I didn't get to do much raliroading, I spent most of the time picking up trash, rebagging trash that the local dogs had scatered, and generally tidying up the battlefield as the Brits would say. Several people have come in already. A couple are the usual early arrivals and one newbe. Actually he was here last year but since I was still imployed I didn't get to spend that much time there and mised meeting him. The guys got the temporary sidings in and the two sun kinks were worked out. We won't get everything done. We never do, but we're way head of where we are usually. The meet will have one sad note. Our good friend Jack Lucks passed away a couple of months ago. He will be missed. The shop building is being dedicated to him.
I'm watching the Blue Man speical on PBS as I write this. It's a very interesting show.
Ed it's good to see that you have your puter problems cleared up. By the way everyone my E-mail address changed. If I hadn't mentioned it before it's " thebeverungs@gmail.com".
Well I'm going to hit the sack. The heat and very high humidity really took it out of me.
jeffrey-wimberly wrote:The AD was in Sue's original post.
Am I really that clueless?
Guess so!
Thought I would stop in the Diner before hitting the sack.....
JEFF: It might be a good time to at least get Xp on your system, I found it much more stable than 98, and MS no longer supports 98 or ME as an added incentive. The Seta drive will work fine with Xp, and with Vista now out, you should be able to get a copy of Xp at a good price.
ED: Good to see you on board again. I have had some strange problems over the years with Norton. Now that I have Vista OS on my computer ( the wife still has Xp and Norton ), I am using Microsoft's anti virus that came with Vista. I figure it will play nicely with their own OS. So far, Vista has been great, the only issues have been with 3rd party software that hasn't tightened up their own security issues, so Vista says " no go". But the bigger 3rd party guys are onboard pretty well, so I have not experienced any issues so far.
Here's hoping the the hurricanes stay away from your orchards, and you receive just enough rainfall for a great harvest. So far, the Tavarez is pitching a great game.
PC: The photos are real clear, nice job.....what is in those blue container cars?

Well, I've been up late moving the layout to the upstairs and............
I think I'll just go to bed and worry about it in the morning......

Trains anyone?
Good afternoon Diners: It’s way past tea-time, and when I came in there was no sign of any-one else having been here since Colby at 11:13. Anyway I brought a fresh batch of banana/rhubarb muffins so maybe that will entice a few more visitors.
Wet today, I haven’t tried to get the whipper snipper going. It wouldn’t fire at all yesterday, I’d drained out the old gas and replaced with new. Maybe tomorrow it will be in a better mood.
Ryan: Please wish Monique a very from us.
Dick:
I don't have any trouble with photos that others send in email, why AOL ?? Have any of you experienced this problem?
ED: glad the ’puter is back to normal. Send up some bananas please, the things we are getting are pretty tasteless unless the skins are brown!
Garry:
Colby: You may be able to tell if the pack is shot even without an ammeter. It depends on how it’s made inside. If you can get hold of a volt meter and put it across the Track Power terminals, watch the voltage reading as you turn up the power. My guess is that nothing much of anything will happen until you are way up the power scale, then suddenly the voltage will spike, and hold steady at pretty much full. If this is the case, then the pack is a variable resistor type, and is indeed probably toast. Sad to say that your video caused my Netscape to crash as soon as I clicked on Play. Oh well, one day we will have High Speed, and maybe we can join the real world….
