Dick,

I have 3.0 which is very basic, and was thinking of getting elements, but 5.0 might be money well spent.  Thanks for the tip.

Evening Gang: I started to clean out the west side of the corrals this evening. There isn't a whole lot of poop and hay on that side but I need to get it out and the ground dryed out before I move the feeder over. We went over to the creek to check out the crossing. There is twice as much silt and debries then there was last week. The field also has water standing in several places. It's going to take a week or so to dry out enough to cut and bale.

No MRRing again tonight. I have the latest MR and Trains here so I'll do some reading, that should qualify. Right now I think I'll check out and see about going to bed.

Good Night All

Hello Colby. If "so out of it" means really, really dirty ............. clean it by hand with Goo Gone and a soft cloth.  Do the same for locomotive wheels if needed. Works for me.  OR use a "Brite Boy".   Also, push the track cleaning car rather than pull it. What kind is it? I found the Walthers Trainline Box car that pulls an abrasive pad is fine for normal maintenace.

Happy Model Railroading

Yes it is dirty. and I have both the Brite Boy and a track cleaning car from Model Power.

I'm working on a new layout plan and hand cleaning it as I put the track down. I can run my 0-6-0 fairly well at noch 8, but at lower speeds forget it.

Good Morning, Zoe, I'll have some of Ed's orange juice,

a cup of coffee, and some pancakes, please!

I tried to come into the Diner last night, but our servers had a sign on the door that  they were closed for the evening (stripping and waxing the floors, I think it said). So I figured I'd come back for breakfast today. Hopefully, I won't be hitting TOP again like yesterday... Ah, I see Jeff beat me to those honors today - thanks, Jeff!

Sue (aka gear-jammer) wrote:

Jim,  If you move, will the basement flood?  If the church is a temporary tenant, maybe they could use the basement.  Just a thought.

Good questions, Sue - and various club members asked the landlord just those ones (among others). We'd be getting the majority of the back of the basement area if we took it, and apparently based on history, the worst they've ever had in the basement was 5-7' in from the ramp door (one time, with a storm blowing hard from that direction). And we'd have the area further from the door than that.

The church (landlord's guess) wants our space because it's to the rear of space they are currently using for their church services, so the kids wouldn't have to go outside to the other building. But the club wanted to know if the church could help us out (e.g., by helping prep the basement area, etc.) in exchange for the money the club already has put into the layout so far (around $10,000 over five years in this building) and will end up having to replace. The landlord expressed that his preference would be that we stay where we are.

Garry, the idea of building in modular sections was mentioned if we move to the basement. I'd agree with you and others that the church people probably don't realize that this is not some 4X8 Plywood Prairie layout, nor how much time, materials and effort went into the layout. We did suggest that the landlord might have the pastor and some elders take a look at what we have built (if only so they realize that we're not going to be able to get it out in a week or two).

So Paul, does that mean that the President's name is actually George W**k Bush? Wink [;)] Oh, good luck with the corral cleaning...I'm sure it's not your favorite chore around the place.

Anyone else see on the news tonight about the Home Depot employee(s) who helped police catch some shoplifters - and got fired for it? Shock [:O] Apparently they have a policy for their employees to not chase after possible shoplifters or to call the police (though the one employee who was interviewed said he kept his eyes on the shoplifter all the way out the door and asked them for a receipt - at which point they ran and the police caught them). Boy, modern business practices make you shake your head in wonder, don't they?

RT, you have a good start there on your 'high-level' layout. Should look even better once you have room for the whole passenger consist up there! Thumbs Up [tup]

We're only at 55 F. today, but supposed to reach the 90's today. Cool [8D] May be time to turn the air conditioner back on in the apartment, I guess.

I'll see everyone later, probably around suppertime. Have a good day!

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Morning folks!

Early morning thunder showers and the grass is growing again, oh boy, looks like the mower is coming out of the shed again this weekend.

Dick, sorry I missed your granddaughter in Myrtle Beach, we stayed in a condo in North Myrtle Beach.

Garry, I know, I know! But virtual pie is low, very low in calories too! Hope the Spectrum Heavy 4-8-2 repairs are speedy this time around!

RT, nice looking display shelf you got there!

Jeff, D-Day was 61 years ago today. Here is the link to the National WWII museum in New Orleans. It is devoted mainly to the history of D-Day, its original name was the National D-Day Museum, and since they added more wings and displays it was renamed. http://www.ddaymuseum.org/ A must see museum if you are ever in New Orleans.

Good morning everyone...cloudy and cool here today so far 52F....brrrrrr. The temps here have been like a yo-yo so far this Spring. At least I won't bake today doing the wall repair job, and I should be able to finish that job today barring any unforseen events occuring. The storms of yesterday really wreaked havoc in southern New Hampshire (NH), over 17,000 lost power, big trees down, some house fires due to lightening strikes and hail damage to cars. All the storms passed to the south and west of us, not one drop of rain fell and I am HAPPY!

Moderate drought conditions continue across the Raleigh-Durham area.  For reasons unknown even to me as a meteorologist, my town of Apex seems particularly prone to it.

Last night a fairly impressive squall line passed to our north.  The RDU airport (north of us) got a little (0.25"), but my home weather station measured just (0.03").  Consequently our water bill has doubled over the past two months.  The vegetable garden and the lawn both need help!

Oh, yeah, I'll have the fried clams.

Anyway, looking at the long-range GFS model, the next chance of precipitation for central NC isn't until late next week:

DAVEV: Congratulations on your PHD Dave!! Meteorology!!! Allright!!!! I have always had an interest in weather, even as a 10 year old, I would cut out the maps from the daily newspaper and try to predict the direction of the Highs and Lows towards New England. What is the subject of your Thesis???

FERGIE: Have you ordered a 2-10-4 yet? They are taking orders for them now for end of year delivery. Much more powerful locomotive than the 2-10-2's which were "sluggish" according to books that I have read. The 2-10-4 was a design steo-up from the Berkshire 2-8-4 which ushered in the era of Super Power Locomotives.

SUE: I received a notince and a survey to take from Adobe last night, they are coming out with Adope Phtoshop 6.0 this year, and it is supposed to be bundled with Adobe Premier Elements ( for Video camera work ) and will sell retail for about $149. That means that ver 5.0 that I have will have some nice sales, like NOW, to get ready for version 6 in the stores, so you might want to check around BestBuy, Staples, etc.

Later, got get back outside to finish "landscape/ wall construction/repair work...( does this help with MRR landscaping I wonder? )

Herbs are continuing to grow, but the cilantro, curry, and one of the basil plants is already bolting. The tomato plants are getting bigger too, looking forward to a fresh tomato crop to keep us in the RED until the first frost in the late Fall.

Hello Diners.......

Well it's kinda sad around here. We just returned from the vet.  No possible cure for our oldest cat, and we had her put down. She was about 18. It was long enough to be used to having her around. Recently, she would sit with me if I was up early and having my morning oatmeal.

Time for a sanity break in the train room.

Bye.

Garry,

Sorry to hear about your loss. Animals are a great source of enjoyment and companionship. And 18 years is a good long life for a cat.

Our cat (Kitty) and dog (Sparky) are both around 12 years old now and we got them soon after Ben turned 1 year old. Ben has always known them both since he was a baby and Kitty still sleeps with him every night.

Good Afternoon Diners:  It would be sunny here if there wasn’t this fog.  Still, it’s warmer than yesterday, and Kris planted out the pole beans…at last!

RE: D-Day Thanks, Jeff.  It did not make headlines in the news media.  I wonder why.
…Happy to report that CTV Newsnet did note it at some length this morning at 10:00.  I haven’t caught a top-of-the-hour since to see if they have continued.  I think it was also in the Halifax Herald.  We take so much for granted, and remember the cost infrequently.  We probably say “Thanks” less often than we should.

Garry:

She was about 18. It was long enough to be used to having her around. Recently, she would sit with me if I was up early and having my morning oatmeal.
…Kris and I understand that well, and share your pain. “Pampas George” was 22 when he died a few years back.  Aloof as cats often are, in his later years he took to condescending to sitting on my lap.  The picture of him doing that which is on Kris’ screen-saver slide show still gives me a twinge.

BTW, glad to see you are sticking to the oatmeal, and are not lured into CapeJim’s syrupy breakfasts! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

A few more trees planted over the last day or so.  Many more sorted out from their storage boxes, and a whole bunch have to be re-habilitated. Since the decision has been made to paint directly on the wall for the back drop “retro-fit” I’m going to have to stop planting and do the corner coving, and at least paint where the trees will be against the back drop.  That will give me something different to attempt, not altogether a bad thing.

Colby: Cleaning that track before laying it sounds like a good idea. If you do use Goo Gone, the May MR article on Track Maintenance suggested wiping the track off afterwards to get rid of the GG.  I picked up from that same article a possible reason why my use of rubbing alcohol as a cleaner isn’t working as well as I would expect.  Turns out it’s almost too good, and leaves the rail dry, and with no protective coating between the track and the wheels.  The result is severe arcing.  The carbon from this leads to stalling of locos within a few minutes (as I have experienced).  Solution is a light oil sparingly applied after the cleaning.  The whole article is worth reading.

Another meeting tonight (on top of an hour long conference call this afternoon.)  May not get back in today.

TTFN.

Dick, are you sure that's $149?? That sounds way cheap for PhotoShop (or do they just have the price jacked up for CS Studio?). If it's only that low of a price, I can afford to upgrade from Elements (though Elements does most everything I need to do).

Thanks for the thoughts Ryan and Der regarding our oldest cat (Skeekie).  It was good, also, to read Colby's story about Fossil and Sueky. Now we're down to only one pet, a 12 year old cat who is still called "Little Kitten".  She's the crazy one.

Another pet story is when we were living in the country in Michigan and had several pets. Among them were Max (large black Lab) and Boss (Dalmation). Boss got that name because that's what he thought he was. Sometimes, the dogs were confined to the basement laundry room after coming in from a rainy, muddy day. That room included the laundry tub with a short hose to reach a bucket for the dog's water. Ocassionally, forgetful humans neglected their water. No problem to Max.  He was large enough to reach the faucet at the back of the sink, and he would turn on the water himself. When the dogs had enough water, Max would then reach the faucet a second time, and he turned off the water. No kidding. This really did happen. Unfortunately, one night the dogs failed to return home.  We called and called for them. We thought we heard a bark in the distance. We drove around to try and find them. We found Boss standing next to Max who was laying on the road. Max had been struck by a car or truck and could not move his hind end. Boss was faithful to his buddy, Max. Boss was keeping guard. No other cars hit Max. We took Max to the vet. X-Rays disclosed that Max's spine had been broken into two pieces. We had him put down. A few years later, boss became old and died, too. Boss, we could tell, always missed Max.

Bye.

Hey, hey, now, Der - I'll have you know that once in a while is okay for the pancakes. Yeah!! [yeah] It's if you have a steady diet of it (or if you are diabetic and not using the sugarfree syrup) that you get yourselves into trouble. All things in moderation on the food... Wink [;)]

Sounds like your tree-planting is coming along, well, too! Good luck with the corner-coving... (Almost let slip a w-word, and I don't want anyone getting onto me...)

Jordan, if that's the PhotoShop Elements program, that sounds more in line with a usual price. I got my version (3.0) several months back, for free with my scanner (Canon LIDE 50, a nice one).

Garry, sorry to hear about Skeekie. Good to hear about Boss and Max (though sad that you don't have either of those special pets anymore). Dogs can sure be loyal (to other dogs as well as to their owners).

Colby, how is Fossil doing? Hearing the pet stories was reminding me of one of the guys from the 'old' Coffee Shop (Bridge Tom, for those who remember or are in touch with him). He had one cat who loved to steal cabeese (and stash 'em away elsewhere in the house, like under the dining room table). Hopefully, nobody else's cat has that bad habit...

Well, I'm going to run an errand so I'll see everyone later. Hope you all can get some MRR'ing  (or at least reading a recent issue of MR) in tonight. BTW, some of the rest of you may have received an email that the Trains site is running a special sale on Information Station PDF's you can download (through the 9th, I think it was).

Blessings,

Evening Gang: I finished the corral this afternoon. You may not believe this Jeff but there are several things that I consider worse. Building fences for one. Having the grapple on the bucket cut about 1/3 of the time off. I didn't have to mess around to get a full bucket everytime. Actually I could get a lot more then I ever got in the bucket before.

Well the live steam meet is just a week away. I talked to Terry the track owner today. He said there are 2 places where sun kinks have appeared. These we'll work on tomorrow. I'll try to get over there in the afternoon to give him a hand and fulfill my MRRing for the day.

Tomorrow I'll have to get to work on the creek crossing. If the guy comes to cut the hay I have to have it cleaned out so he can get across. I should get to bed so I can get up early. Yea, like that is really going to happen.

Good Night All

Good evening to all.....had to make another HD run this afternoon, a bag of mortar sure doesn't set too many stones. While we were near the new 146 Mall, we headed to Barnes & Noble where I picked up a couple of books on Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 and then we headed to Longhorn Steakhouse for supper.  After returning home I had to replace a GCFI in son #2's kitchen.....this is a new home and this GCFI has acted up since day 1, so I replaced the dog..all set now......while I was there, I looked at his main PC that got taken out by the lightening strike....prognosis...dead PS. I removed the Power Supply and applied power, no DC outputs.....after removing the case to the PS, the inline fuse was good, so some other components got fried......looks like a new PS is needed.

CAPE JIM: Version 6 that is due out this year, is Adobe Photoshop "Elements" bundled with Premier Elements ( for video camera use ), not the full blown software for professionals that cost about $600. Version 5 of APE which I just purchased, was a big upgrade over version 4, so the price of $89 with a $30 Adobe rebate was too good to pass up, PLUS, it came bundled with Adobe Premier Elements!!!! An excellent buy !!!!

GARRY: Sorry to hear about the loss of your pet cat.....we lost our dog two years ago this month, and our cat one year ago this month and we miss them very much, but wife doesn't want to get another pet yet....losing them was tough for her, I guess she doesn't want to go through it again.......I would get another pet tomorrow, they are good for ones health..PROVEN!
