Evening all -

Just a quick stop in for a barley pop please? Thanks.

Jeff - I don't, but my dad's father has his name on the wall inside our War Memorial Center http://www.oncenter.org/complex/warmemorial/index.cfm, but I am not sure which war he was in. I do know my dad and several other relatives were in Vietnam, but do not know if they have their names on the wall.

Informtaion about the War Memorial Center:

"An Honor Roll of over 62,000 Veterans is located on the second floor of the War Memorial. Included in this listing are names of Veterans who entered the service with Onondaga County as their home of record.

Additional names for this wall may be submitted for Veterans who have served in World War I, World War II , Korea and Vietnam Wars. There is also a section for Veterans of the Berlin Crisis and Persian Gulf War."

Take care!

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010

I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017

Evening Gang: It has been raining off and on for the entire day. I haven't checked the rain gauge tonight so can't say how much has fallen. We worked over at the track getting the shop cleaned up. We're going to name the shop for one of our members who passed away recently. For those of you who may have seen Jack Lucks HO model railroad in MR awhile back you will remember the type of work he did. Jack was a good friend and a very good advisor when needed. When he would be asked a question he would think about the answere very carefully. I can see him now thinking about what you were saying and formulating his answere. He is missed.

There isn't much else to report tonight. Of course the rain is the big topic around here. It's going to be a couple of weeks now untill we can get the hay cut and baled. It is going to take a week at least to dry out the fields.

Well I'm going to head out and see what else is going on.

Good Night All

Found the Diner on page 2 and decided it needed to be bumped up.

The US once had a section that wanted to seperate itself from the rest of the nation, and did. It was the CSA, the Confederate States of America. The United States government wasn't going to stand for this, and rightly so. After much political debate and bickering the southern states let their cannon do their talking for them, at Ft. Sumpter. After nearly 5 years of unrelenting war, the south was defeated, but at a terrible price. Was it worth it? Yes. Had the union remained divided, the US would not be the nation it is today. Ancestors of mine, both European immigrants and Native Americans alike, fought on both sides. Many were killed. They died fighting for what they believed in. Some fought for the Union, some for the Confederacy. Today, it doesn't matter what side they were on, except to the historians. They are all veterans, Union and Confederate alike, they are remembered as American veterans, and that is how I will remember them on Memorial Day. As American veterans who died for their country, to defend the rights and beliefs that were important to them, to defend their homeland, their freedom and their way of life. As you look around at all that you have, at your family, your home, I ask you, what is more important than that?

Jeff,

Nope, I'm not on any memorial...  My name and the names of my combat weather team are scrawled among thousands of others on the walls in the pax terminal at Al Uideid Air Base as having come out of Baghdad in one piece.  Some of the names have dates they died.

But no memorial.  I'll be very surprised if Iraq vets even get a generic memorial in DC before I'm old and gray.  It would be nice to have a place to take my sons to tell them what happened when they're old enough to understand.

Holiday Weekend Outlook: Warm and Stormy
May 27, 2007

The Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of the 2007 summer season, will be full of warm and calm weather along both coasts, even as the central U.S. stays a bit stormy.

Today:

The second day of the holiday weekend will be very similar to Saturday, in that additional storms are likely for the Central Plains and Great Lakes and warmer, more tranquil conditions will persist across the West and South.

The only large variation will be found in the Northeast and parts of the Ohio Valley, where early-morning sunshine will give way to increasing clouds and a chance of late-day showers and thunderstorms. A few rumbles of thunder will be possible over the Northern Rockies as well.

The Central Plains will remain soggy, with another round of thunderstorms likely. Across Texas, the additional rain could lead to isolated episodes of flash flooding.

The hottest temperatures will be found across the Desert Southwest, where highs will easily climb into the triple digits. Temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s will be found across the rest of the Southwest, Great Basin and inland California. Similar temperatures will also be found in parts of the interior South and along the Gulf Coast.

Highs across the rest of the West, Central Plains and Northeast will generally be in the 70s and 80s, with a few 60s found in the western Great Lakes.

Memorial Day:

The extended holiday weekend will end the same way it began, with a scattering of thunderstorms across the Central U.S. and very warm weather across the West and Southeast.

The scattered afternoon thunderstorms will mostly be found across much of the Southern Plains and Ozarks. Additional storms will make their way into the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast later in the day.

The West will continue to warm up, as 90-degree temperatures will expand into more of the Great Basin, southern Rockies and west Texas. While the Desert Southwest will continue to see highs in the triple digits, the Pacific Northwest will only make it into the 70s and lower 80s.

Shifting focus to the East and South, temperatures will also be on the warm side as the thermometers should climb well into the 80s, with a few 90-degree readings possible.

Well, another typical race day here in Indianapolis..........UGLY!

Uh Oh!...posted May 27th @ 9:35am

The unsettled nature of the weather pattern is rearing its ugly head!  In the past half hour additional clusters of showers and thunderstorms have formed just west and northwest of Terre Haute, and they are marching northeast.  Like wave one, this will be a close call in about an hour or so, I'll keep you posted...

Maybe Some Better News...posted May 27th @ 9:05am

Just to update you on the rain...the track will see some spotty light rain for about another half hour, then, for now, there is some clearing out west (as far as rain goes).  Again the focus will be on where the spotty showers will set-up until early afternoon.

RACE OUTLOOK: As for the rest of the day, the key is to have this potential clearing arrive by 11am (so the race can get going close to 1pm).  Then, the window of opportunity may only last for a few hours before rain chances increase a bit later today.  Here is a close-up view of Forecast 8 Futurecast by 3PM this afternoon.

500 FORECAST:  No change for right now.  My concern after this first wave, still focuses on the batch of rain developing in central Illinois.  This seems to be gaining strength and looks to move along I-70.  This could arrive around mid-morning to early afternoon...whether or not it will impact the Speedway is too tough to say right now, we will have more throughout the morning.  A cold front will drop into the state.  I would say that rain chances will get higher as the day wears on, so the more laps that get in early in the day, (if possible), the better.

And Monday isn't looking any better!

Even the crowds at the track look kind of light.  For a live shot of the speedway, click this: http://wwc.instacam.com/instacamimg/SPDWY/SPDWY_l.jpg?rnd=15-052720071001  This is the short chute between turns one and two, all of turn two, and the back straight.  You can also make out the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall Of Fame.  It's the concrete building just inside the short chute.

Usually by this time on race day it's a swarm of people.

Oh well, maybe they can get the race in, but it looks like it may be a short one if it even happens.

Whatever the case, here's to those who've made it all possible.........

Hey Mr. Vollmer.....what's with the hat?  Wife talk you into it?

Oh hey Zoe!  Yeah, I'll have those chocolate pancakes if you don't mind.

Found the Diner hanging onto the end of page 2 and decided it needed a bump.

I've just been busy changing out all the light fixtures in my trailer. I've switched from fluorescent tubes to those little spiral fluorescent bulbs. I'm using the 26 watt 'Energy-Smart' daylight 6500K bulbs. They come in a blue and white package. They put out a nice blue-white light equivalent to a 100 watt incandescent bulb. The 'Enery-smart' bulbs in the green and yellow package put out a yellowish light that I don't like. If I want yellow light I'll get a bug-lite. There's 4 in the front room, 1 in the bathroom and 2 in the bedroom. That's 182 watts on the spirals and 20 watts on the tube in the kitchen. That's 202 watts total on the lighting if they're all on at once. With the old lights it would take 384 watts. That's a difference of 182 watts.

The 91st Indianapolis 500 is under a rain delay after 113 laps, with track drying underway. Tony Kanaan led when the race was suspended, with Andretti Green Racing teammates Marco Andretti second and Danica Patrick third.

Of course, it's blacked out around here.  But that doesn't mean I can't log on to a webcast live from the speedway!  http://www.indycar.com/video/

Here it is 4:15 in the afternoon and we're on page 2. No one has been in since PC  this morning. I guess the weather is better where most of you are. Actually it hasn't rained much today so far. The gang got most of the first coat of paint on the shop. I went to the train show in the morning and worked over there after I got back. I got one very old all metal MDC taper side ore car for $3 and a couple of books on Mack trucks. It wasn't much of a show but you take what you can get.

Well this should bump us back to page one so I'll say so long untill later.

Evening, Janie - I'll have a root beer float, please, and some cheesey chili fries. Yum!

Boy, I take off for part of yesterday and the place slips to page 2 - shame, shame! Wink [;)] Good thing Paul came by this afternoon, or we'd maybe still be there. I'll bump it a bit to help the cause along.

Well, and it looks like I'm covering the dinner, folks! Okay, Janie, let me know what the tab for these chowhounds totals when I get back later... I think PC suckered me into this one!Wink [;)]

Luc, nice photo for Memorial Day! I assume that's from close to your area, based on the uniforms they are wearing. Thumbs Up [tup] Thanks for bringing in the Tim Horton's for the morning bunch, too. Smile [:)] And how's Gloria been?

In running through most of the (many) posts I've missed, I see Jeff was chowing down on one of those dagwood sandwiches that could feed 3 or 4 of the rest of us...Dinner [dinner]Shock [:O] The appetite on that 'kid'!

Hope all our veterans in the forums and around your areas have a good (and well-earned) rest this weekend. Kick back and enjoy the day, and remember all those who didn't come home in one piece. Black Eye [B)]

Bob K., I think you have the ticket there, with remembering all your good times with your April Marie. Hope you have a good time (and a good feed) at your family get-together. Good thing those bees at your job site didn't have an opening on the inside, where you were!Shock [:O]

Anyone see about the truck wreck south of Cape along I-55? Happened couple of days ago and they may still be rounding up the bees. There were about 700 hives on the truck when the driver fell asleep and ran off the road. Driver died in the wreck, and three area beekeepers with full protective gear were trying to re-stack the tipped over hives to get the bees back into them. I heard there were a million plus bees on the truck and some thousands might still be loose. Highway Patrol put up a warning flashing sign that told people on the interstate to keep their windows rolled up and to NOT stop until they were long past the area. Local TV station has a video linked to their home page:

http://www.kfvs12.com/

PC, great to hear your CFO's doing well. Give her a hug from us! Smile [:)] Loved your 'Goverment cover-up" topic (especially some of the explanations for it....).Laugh [(-D]

Storms haven't been too bad this afternoon; area got a good soaking in the yard (I dashed out to roll my car windows up before the worst of it arrived). Looks on the radar like it's tracking mostly from mid-southwest Missouri up toward St. Louis and then up Mike and Jerry's way, but not a lot of severe cells showing. Should be good for the gardens around here. Now maybe enough will stay in the system so PC and our upper Midwest crew won't have to water their gardens.

Good to hear Ken L's still alive and kicking - and Jeff and JP, are you guys trying to start a Sign - Ditto [#ditto] tree or something? Heck, we have enough trouble keeping the young'uns from doing that! Wink [;)]

JP, nice group of photos there - I think I've seen that one-stall enginehouse in a Kalmbach book (or one a lot like it). Hope things continue well with your social life. Taken Krysta railfanning lately? Wink [;)]

Speaking of the ladies, I went to the Saturday evening service at church, and noticed a woman (pleasant on the eyes) at the end of the row I was sitting in (who seemed to notice me also). Nice singing voice, from what I heard. I briefly said 'Hi' sort of as we were on the way out in the hallway, but didn't ask if she was single (no ring, though) or get her phone number. Will need to see about going to Sat. service next week and see if I can do a little better on that...

Got a few emails from Flip (in Florida), for those who know him. He said they've had smoke smell from the Georgia fires, but not all the smoke itself, and that it's been fairly dry down his & Deb's way. Flip still is working long days, but said they're giving the drivers some time off in the middle of the days, so they end up only working a total of 7 or 8 hours a day. He said he hasn't had enough energy because of the dragged out days to do anything on his MRR'ing. Sheesh - some companies! Dead [xx(]

Fergie, good to hear you got together with Siberianmo, even if you were 'forced' to go to the LHS... Evil [}:)] So, was that your fifth or sixth 2-10-2, I'm losing track... Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I was able to make it to the friend(from small group)'s funeral yesterday morning, and a good number of the group showed up. Her health had abruptly gone downhill (even after she was admitted to the hospital early last week).  Dee wouldn't have wanted to drag on for months or years, so it's better that she has gone to be home. She was a caring and friendly person. Hard on her daughter Tammi (only child), though. You might keep Tammi in your prayers, please.

I got called out early this a.m. (about 6:40) - the primary on-call had just finished up an assessment at local jail and had just got home and to bed (she lives about an hour north of Cape), when the ER called her. So I went there for her, and luckily was able to finish up in time to make it to early church. I was supposed to help our pastor with Communion at the early service, and had no idea of how to get word to them if I was going to be running late.

Need to head for home (now that I've got my appetite started), and fix dinner. See everyone later tonight or tomorrow morning. It'll be good to have the day off tomorrow, and to not even be the backup! Probably won't set the alarm a bit.

Good evening everyone, I hope you all had a great Sunday. The veggie gardens got planted today, so now that is one more job out of the Honey Do jar completed. I noticed that I had not changed the oil in the lawn tractor, rototiller, and push mower, so that made the list for things to do next week. The gas cans are all empty, and 87 octane is at $3.05 now, but we need the mowers and goats are too expensive, so $55 will fly out of the budget next week.

JEFF: Very nice Memorial Day history lesson, and you are very correct in your statements.

DAVE: There will be a memorial for the Iraq war, there is too much support for our men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

MIKE: That was a very moving video. I have seen this before, and it still brings a tear of pride to my eyes. This is one smiling face that will great our men and women upon their return home.

An open letter to my uncle Buddy, who has been in a Veteran's hospital since 1949, having been the only remaining soldier alive from his squad under attack in December 1944 in the Battle of the Bulge:

I only knew you a short time Uncle Buddy, I was only 4 years old, and you were 18, when you came home to the farm while on leave from basic training. You took me for a walk along the old B&A train tracks that warm Sunday morning. Soon, you were off to war and I never saw you again until 1945. I remember the terrible nightmares you had, which finally caused you to make the decision to enter the Vets hospital for shock treatments. They didn't work, and you have spent the rest of your life in that hospital in North Hampton, Ma. Because of you, and the many millions of other men and women from all the Allied countries of the world, I had a safe home and country to live in, raise my family, see my grandchildren born, and meet so many nice people, like those on this MRR forum. God bless you uncle Buddy, and all those veterans living and passed on who paid the high price of our freedom. We will NEVER forget you!!! Your nephew, Richard.

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !!

JEFF: you did a good job on that. i had tears in my eyes when i finishd readin it

Evening Gang: It's only 7;45 and Mary Ann and I are ready for bed. I just got a call from the man that has the shipping containers that Mary Ann wants. He's coming around 8;30 tomorrow morning. Sooo we'll have to get up alittle early.

Dick. That was a very touching message to your uncle. It goes for all our veterans. God Bless and keep them safe.

I gotta go.

Jim - I wish i could still say the social life is going good. Not sure what happened between yesterdays 1st post and noon today other than @ 645 she emailed me to tell me she now wants me to not call/email/txt msg her not even atempt to try and see her ever again.

So, who knows. Best thing is that her cousin ( buddy of mine) is going to see her tomorrow @ a family bbq and plans on asking her what hapened and why. Yes, I called him when I got the email and told him and he's at a loss for words too.

Oh well, life goes on. I am off to bed here shortly. Maybe I can sleep better tonight than I did last night.

Good morning to all on this Memorial Day 2007. To all the veterans who fought in wars to preserve freedom , be in the United States, our brothers in Canada, England, Australia, and other Allied countries, I thank you......SP5 Dick Jubinville, US Army, 5th Artillery Guided missile group, 1959-1962. I was one of the lucky ones, I was never shot at, or knew battle, and I thank God for what others did for me.

Zoe, I will have Cheerios mixed with Raisin Bran cereal , blueberries and strawberries on top, skim milk please, and a tall glass of ED's OJ.

So what do all you guys have planned for today?

Good morning, I will sit back and enjoy a coffee, please.

I am sorry that I missed Jim's root beer floats yesterday.

We have not had much layout time, but did exercise the mallet while working out last night.

Bob, I have not spent as much time working on trees as expected because the weather has been good because you need to make hay when the sun shines.  I am hoping to cut & stain some lumber for my  retaining wall by the scratch built tunnel project.

Dick, Have you been bowling lately?

Philip,  It is good to hear that your wife is doing better.

Jeffrey,  Your photo on the abandoned track thread is one of my favorites that you have posted not counting your abandoned loco.

I am around even if I am quiet.

Sue

SUE: No, I have not been bowling since the league season ended in late April. Lorraine has been bowling though, she is in two women's leagues, Mondays and Tuesdays, two different bowling places. Her leagues ended in April also, but she and her friend bowl throughout the summer every two weeks or so to keep in practice. As you may not be aware, we bowl Candle pin, which uses smaller balls and smaller pins, and you get 3 balls as opposed to 2 for 10 pin bowling. Candle pin bowling is only in parts of Ohio, New England states, and Nova Scotia.

So you took the Mallet for a spin this morning I see......better do that now before the grille gets heated for the BBQ this noontime !!
