Hello everyone .........

Ah......  thanks Luc for the T.H. coffee.  Terrific!

We returned from Louisville last night (3 hour drive) where we were the last couple of days.

Catching up on Diner posts, I see many kind thoughts pertaining to Memorial Day including (but not limited to) Dick's Uncle Buddy, Jeff's re-post of the CSA vets, and Luc's Canadian vets. Thank God for our military heros.

There were a couple of comments regarding my layout construction. Thanks for your interest.  Bobk asked if there were any problems with sagging with my MDF. No, Bob. there is no problem with that. All main benchwork pieces are of MDF. They have not been sealed or anything. I think all the screws prevent that in the same manner as screws prevent plywood from warping. I use plywood as the base for roadbed. Risers are of whatever is handy (pine or MDF).

Dick mentioned room sizes. The layout room is 64 feet long but relatively narrow with widths varying up to a maximum of about 14 feet. The room is oddly shaped because on one side it follows the foundation walls along the "uphill side" of a house built on a hill side. The layout room is the backside of a walk-out basement. My wood working shop is a separate room at the end of the train room taking up the remaining 24 feet of an 88 foot foundation. The wood shop has an assortment of power tools and a dust collecting sytem.

Also, Dick mentioned my procedure of building only a few sections at a time. One of the advantages to me is it keeps me interested. ....... I don't:  do all bench work until it's done. Then do all trackwork until it's done.  Then do all wiring until it's done. Then build all buildings until they are completed. Then do all scenery until it's done.  Instead, I build one section at a time until scenery is installed, and then I go to the next part. It's more fun this way.

Bobk: we're here for you.  Sounds like you are handling the grief as well as can be expected. God bless you and your kids.

I hope Michael (8500 hp gas turbine)  is okay.

Jim in Cap G. Sorry the driver died in the truck accident. I could think of some "pun" jokes pertaining to a wrecked truck load of bee hives. But, since somebody died I had better not.

Well, now I'm almost done with my second cup of T.H. coffee.  Thanks again, Luc.

Everybody, Happy Model Railroading !!!!!

Good morning.

Today's Weather for:
Sundown, LA  71446-6114      5/28/2007

Sundown Fire Dept., Station 23

Heat Index:  81°F
Humidity:  76%
Dew Point:  69°F

So Far Today
High:  77°F
Low:  66°F
Rain:  0.00"
Rain Rate:  0.00"/h
Gust:  8mph ESE

Rest Of Today  High: 85    Mostly cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the mid 80s. Southeast winds around 10 mph.

Tonight  Low: 65    Mostly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Lows in the mid 60s. Light and variable winds.

As the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend comes to a close, many Americans will begin their journey back home, either by way of interstate or airport. Regardless of the mode of transportation, weather could cause a few problems for travelers over the next couple days. Here is a daily breakdown of possible travel trouble spots:

Today:

A scattering of showers and thunderstorms will again develop across the Southern Plains and Midwest. As a result, airport travel in and out of Dallas, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, St. Louis and Indianapolis could be affected. Additionally, traffic along portions of I-35, I-44 and I-70 might be slowed by the hit-and-miss precipitation.

Farther to the north, a more organized storm system will bring a greater chance of severe storms to Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas. Travelers planning on taking either I-90 or I-94 through any of the aforementioned states should expect a few slow-downs if a storm moves across the interstate.

Stretching from Florida to North Carolina, tranquil weather conditions will pave the way for a great travel day for airports in Miami, Atlanta, Nashville and Charlotte. Travel along the southern half of the I-95 corridor should be free-flowing as well.

Farther north, spotty showers and blustery winds should make for tricky travel from the Mid-Atlantic into the Northeast. While the precipitation will take aim on Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia, wind gusts in excess of 30 mph will be possible in upstate New York and New England.

The entire Western U.S. has a great day of travel shaping up as high pressure will keep the hazardous weather away. The lack of weather-related tie-ups should keep traffic on I-5 moving just fine and flights in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Phoenix on time.

Being as it's getting near lunchtime, I'll have something appropriate.

Ahhhhh, the skies have cleared, the temp is 76F and climbing, what a beautiful Memorial Day! The kids just arrived home from their weekend camping trip to the coastal shores of CT, always happy to see them safely home towing that 33' camper.

Today the Wart Hogs had a fly-over at noontime as the parade entered the Common in town and the salute to the flag began. It is sad because this is the last time we will have this fly-over, as the wing is being transferred from Westover AF base to somewhere south of New England.

I am headed out to the backyard picnic table to sit in the shade and read several MRR and Train mags and books, a perfect day for that.

GARRY: I like your idea of building one module at the time, and doing the complete job. I see many merits in that approach. When I do phase II up on the 2nd floor of the garage, I will have to give that method some very serious thought.

JEFF: Any cookouts today at the Firestation, or is that only on the 4th of July?

Later,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Good morning,

Hope that all of you are enjoying the holiday weekend. Yesterday the weather here was absolutely fantastic. Low humidity and temps barely into the 80s. A gentle sea breeze cooled all day. Today started off cloudy, may rain but expected to clear later in the day.

Today is my oldest daughter's birthday. It seems just like yesterday that we were at the Beverly (MA) Birth Center where the midwives delivered our beautiful girl, Jennie Marie. Selecting a card for this first birthday without her mother was tough. I purposely picked a card "from both of us". On it I wrote," Even though Mom has passed, her spirit is with us forever". This needs to be a special day for her. Jennie is the one who really stepped up to the plate in helping me through dealing with all the financials, life and health insurance nightmares and most of her mother's accounts. Quite the fantastic young lady. We're right there for each other.

JP: Thank you for you thoughts and prayers. A am doing much better lately. I'm very proud of my kids, I couldn't ask for any better. They want to thank everyone for your concern.         Some real nice pics from your trip. Happy to hear thing are going good with Krista. Is she broken in on the finer points of "trains"? Or did she break you yet? Woman and trains, there's not too many like Sue. Oops- edit: never mind on the romance front, hope it works out...

Sue: I do mean this as a compliment. There's a rootbeer float here with your name on it.       So what are you using for the stain for the retaining wall? Is it to be old creosote or weathered to a gray, maybe a little of both?

Paul: I hope all that rain doesn't come this way. I need a decent week, weatherwise, my entire week is outside work on rebuilding 3 story decks. I'm glad you got out to a show. Even if it wasn't a great one, like you say any show is better than no show. I guess you'll have a busy AM with Mary Ann's containers.

Jeffrey: You're getting good with our daily weather report, we don't need no stinkin' weather channel. I too really like that abandoned, overgrown track. Nice job! What are your plans for around the back/ side of the engine house? Must be a nice lighting effect on the layout and you can save $$ on the bill.

Geez, been sort of working on this post off and on all morning. Think it's time for some lunch, How 'bout some steak tips and corn on the cob. A litle early for a Sam, and a rootbeer float would hit the spot.

inch Looks like your getting soaked along with Paul. Nothing wrong with hiding out in the train room all day. Did you spend any of the weekend at the camp?

Jim: Yes, I really hope I've found the "ticket" to dealing with all those memories. It seems to get better by the day. Maybe next time at church you can find out more about your mystery woman. Do you have a fellowship, coffee and such after church? That would be a great place to "corner", uh I mean talk to her further.

GARRY: I'm handling things pretty good I think. Kind of surprised myself.  I'm glad that the MDF works out for you. You just need to excuse a die hard, old school carpenter. I always want to work with materials that exceed the specs for the job, plus I have no problem spending my  client's $$$, especially when I know I'll not have any issues to deal with down the road. Sounds like you have a nice shop in that basement.

Philip: Was great posting that link for the race. I was busy most of the afternoon, so I didn't get to watch everything. So I see your out railfan/ spying these days. So what do you think was under those tarps anyway? What a great pic for the remembrance of the day.

Hoople: You gota not let this guy get to you. You be the better man, ignore the BS. Without fuel the fire goes out. Relax and work on a train any way you want..

Fergie: Nice that you could meet up w/ some train buds. Have you two met before? It's really too bad you just "had" to go to the LHS. So that 10 wheeler was calling you.

Dick: Sounds like you had a productive Sunday. I really should have the garden planted, but the spot is far from ready. I even have stored crap there and just haven't the mind to deal with it. Maybe if I hussle and move everything, prep the soil, I might make it. Naa, got way to much goings on these next couple of weeks, w/ all the graduations and parties. I know I'll regret it come July and have a barren plot. Have a question. I want to get my daughter a remote trigger or whatever it's called for taking shots on the tripod. She said something about a wireless instead of cable. I don't have a clue an figure you would know what to buy for her D70. Kind like some rookie buying you and engine and don't even know what road.

Quite the letter to Uncle Buddy. It's sad to see the decline in respect for all those that fought for our freedoms. I have seen this through scouts, school activities and the shrinking presence of the spectators at the parades and memorial ceremonies. Sad.

trainmaster: This is Memorial day, not Easter. So just how much chocolate did you pig out on?

Colby: So what's going on with your F7?  Sounds like an Athearn if your wanting to repower it.

luct: So is this just a hit and run?

Michael and Kim: Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Well the weekend is winding down. Not looking forward to this week of work. Have a very difficult 3 story deck to demo and rebuild. The staging is not right, too hard to reach many areas, the electrical service (400A) runs right through the staging, no space for a dumpster but way around the back and all this work is being done with nothing more than the sidewalk below.  Will be short 1 man, while he's in florida for the week. Not my choice of work, but someone has to do it.

Thursday evening is my son's graduation from MassBay and his Chrysler certification. All the family is due back for all the festivites starting off from Friday on.

I'm kind of between thunderstorms here so this will have to be short and sweet. I've been working on weather reports since my days in the Boy Scouts. You think that overgrown track looks good, you ain't seen nothing yet. Just wait til I hit my stride. The other side and the back of the engine house will be taken up by assorted junk like old truck sideframes, wheels and the like. As far as the lighting goes, half the secret to making a layout look good is having the proper lighting, not just for photography but all the time.

                  HI ALL

Not much time to read all the back notes just 8 pages behind. All is well, nice day out 62 and part sun. Ground is dryiny up and flowers are comming out need to cut the yard most of back is just about thigh high, front was cut down to ankle height and my allergys went crazy, cough, sneeze, watering eyes, oh s**t really bad took 3 days for it to settle down, I won't do that again for a few days. The reason is that yellow weed scotchbroom, wind blows the pollen all over the place, so I found it or shall we say it found me........

I found this just lately "I see you are a logger and not a common bum, for only a logger would stir his coffee with his thumb" , so I guess that I'm a logger 'cause most of my RR has to do with logging. And I also like trees.

               SUE:

The rock was put down on the 18th and smoothed out same day [last friday] 6 loads 35 feet with a lot 20 by 20 for parking. Looks nice and Kathy can drive on it, 1/2 minus nice pretty rock, good drainge 'cause of sand underneath.

              MICHAEL & KIM:

Really glad to hear the news, just be carefull and watch the weight. Glad to know that yuo'all are happy about the blessed event. Yuo'all will go done on our friday Mass list.                     KATHY

               ALL:

I'm looking for an old Mantua 2-8-8-2, and can't find one, even thru e-bay. If anybody knows where to locate one, use my e-mail so that we don't clog up the forum Thank You.

To all the Vets that are around THANK YOU and to all that didn't make it prayers and a special Mass was said this morn. and I got act as alter boy. Now I'm going back to try to catch up on what I missed here and hopefully will return.

Good Evening All,

Ended up working the entire weekend as we're two people short and we have a big event coming up at Lime Rock Park this coming weekend. Need 9 cars done and still have bits to do on several and one major redo that we're in the middle of. Caught up enough now to sit in the corner and relax a bit.

Did do some more on the industrial section of the layout and snuck in a couple of 1"/1" oil coolers and some air valve work on the museum 44tonner (ex NH 0814).

Has anyone used the Testors clear parts cement? I picked some up last year and used it for the first time this weekend. Seems ok so far except it's too glossy to me. Guess dust will eventually fix that. Open windows on top floor were done with the clear stuff. The rest is dull coated. This is what I've been working on when time permits.

Colby - it looks like you may have a bad solder joint on the motor. If you have some rosin core solder and an iron, try cleaning up the motor connections and resoldering. It can also be brushes in the motor itself. You might try looking for locomotive maintainence tutorials online.

Well what little free time i've had lately is a wastin' - I'll try to stop in and catch up later.

Colby,

When you do find the motor, PPW, Mashima etc, you should fabricate a cradle with styrene. I use 1" PVC and slice the curved sections to fit. RTV black (silicone) works the best for me for secureing the motor mounts/ motor. Just check that the motor position is inline and uniform. A perfect shaft alighment is not that critical and sometimes not wanted. A slight skew can stop any shaft vibrations. Motor length and shaft diameter are crucial if you plan to use the flywheels. From looking at the pic, you only may be able to use 1 flywheel. Rocos usually don't take kindly to frame modifications. The die cast material really stinks.

GMT,

I don't know how you find the time to even think of trains, let alone work on them (model ones that is). Is the cement you mention Tenax or the Testor's liquid styrene cement? That building's looking real good.

Good evening Diners:  Thank you Dick and others for expressing our thanks for the blood sweat and tears we tend to take for granted.  Sometimes when I want to get fancy about giving thanks at meals I take a line like this: “We thank You for all the men and women whose creativity and industry have made this meal, and our lives here possible.  In times of remembrance, we can add those who who fought and fight for our freedom.

No mrr all weekend. Between yard work, museum type meetings, and Kris’ book launch, haven’t been able to do more than post a pic or two on Philip’s (yes it is too, PC!Big Smile [:D]) “What’s your favourite …?” thread.  So, Sue, whatever it was I may have had planned for tree planting didn’t happen.Thumbs Down [tdn]  Here’s how the trees now in place look from down the tracks. (I posted this in PC’s thread earlier.)

BobK.  Work safe!Angel [angel] That doesn’t sound like a choice site.

Chuck and Kathy:

that yellow weed scotchbroom,
…They had that planted in the highway medians on Vancouver island.  Had to drive with the windows up and the fans off.  Just the smell is stuffy enough, without any allergy effects.

JR:  Those buildings are impressive!

Garry:  In case Luc doesn’t make it in tomorrow morning,….

Time to look for a bedtime snack.  Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Evening Gang: We had 3.5 inches of rain as of this afternoon at 3:30. They say a chance of more until Friday. The guy from the container out fit came by and said that he can get it into the spot that Mary Ann had picked out. We have to do some tree trimming and wait for things to dry out.

We went to see the new Pirates of The Caribbean. I liked it, Mary Ann was not that impressed. Oh well it's a guy flick.

Bob K:Happy B-Day [bday]Happy B-Day [bday] Happy birthday to Jennie Marie. She deserves it. As for you, Be careful on that staging.

We stopped by the cemetary and set a flag on her fathers grave. He served in the Great War. We also placed a flag on the grave of a Confederate solder buried next to the family plot. His name was William Talman of the Arkansas Mounted Rifles. We've been doing that for a number of years, It just seems to be right.

Well I guess I'll check out and hit the sack.

Good morning folks!

I'll have hot tea, a slice of whole wheat toast and a tablespoon of peanut butter please!

Yeah!! [yeah]

The Piedmont Division (PD) layout is 1 year old this week! Hard to believe it, but the layout has been under construction for 1 year now and no loss time accidents have been reported by the PD crew chiefs.

This weekend the PD track laying crew put down just over 40 feet of HO track in a record 2 hours and 30 minutes, and then tested the track within 15 minutes of connecting the first loop and ran a short Southern Railway consist.

On the landscaping front, I got the last of the pavers and pea gravel put down on the front yard patio project yesterday. And we are getting into drought conditions here, had to water the lawn on Saturday and yesterday too. We could use some rain up in these parts soon.

Chef [C=:-)] Did some BBQ chicken and some hot dogs for Memorial Day! Some good too! Dinner [dinner]

John P., that image of the yard taken from the I-10 high rise bridge over the Industrial Canal is certainly a familiar site. That large white building in left side of the background is the NASA Michoud vertical assemblies building were the external fuel tanks for the shuttle are manufactured by Lockheed Martin. During the Apollo mission the bottom stages of the rockets were also built at that facility. We lived near Belle Chasse, so that is familiar territory as well.

Happy Birthday to Jennie Marie! Happy B-Day [bday]

Good morning Zoe, a cup of coffee and glass of Ed's orange juice for me, please. Just a quick stop through this morning. Expect it to be rather busy today, since we were closed yesterday (on top of the usual Monday morning everyone-who-held-it-together-over-the-weekend).

My co-worker David is out until next Monday, so I'm hoping for a slower than usual week.

JR, that building is coming along great! Like how you've done it (and the roads). Nice weathering, too. Thumbs Up [tup]

Laugh [(-D] Bob, I know we do between the Sunday morning services (and before the early one), but we started the 'coffee bar' in the lobby area since the previous time I went to Sat. evening service, so I'm not sure. But I'll keep the idea in mind.Wink [;)]

Tried to figure out some simpler things that might be causing the problems with the Powerbook yesterday, but only marginal success. Got it to start up, but then when I rebooted to try to update the OS, it went back to the reboot cycle thing it's been doing.Dead [xx(] Well, may be needing to save up for sending it in to a shop and let them get it up and running again.

I did get the Hobby Lobby 40 percent off coupon they had on their website, and bought a Woodland Scenics figure set ("Bike Buddies") - which makes their prices much better that way. Yeah!! [yeah] Also started making a list of all my various MRR booklets (mostly Kalmbach stuff), have a total of forty Kalmbach ones and two non-Kalmbach MRR'ing books. I'd been kidding with the LHS in town about before they order more Kalmbach books, that I should bring in my list so he doesn't duplicate any. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Some of the books are from a while back (say 30 years ago...), and at much better prices than they would be now.

Well, better get myself going. See everyone this evening!

Blessings,

The die cast material really stinks.

it's an all wheel drive and pickup

Good morning everyone, and Happy Birthday to Jennie Marie Happy B-Day [bday], what is that box I see with a Nikon label on it????

RIDE STEAM THROUGH THE WHITE MOUNTAINS (NH)  (MEC MOUNTAIN DIVISION )

For any of you guys local, or any of the Diner members who may be travelling to New England for vacation in July, here is a real treat. The Conway Scenic RR is going to be running the former CN 0-6-0 , now numbered 7470 from North Conway station through Crawford Notch on a steep climb to Fabyan RR station which is just beyond the Mt Washington Hotel. This is a long ride, starting at 10am and not returning until about 5pm. Steam is hardly EVER run through the mountains any more, only on Railfans day which is usually in late October, lately in September. There will be several open cars, the dome car, and 1st class car. I rode this steam train several years in the Fall and I can assure you it is well worth the trip and the photo experience. I plan to go there for the weekend and photo the run, and take the Cog RR up Mt Washington. The Steam weekend will be July 14th and 15th. 7470 has been all rebuilt as of 2006.

BERKSHIRE INFO: For the Diner members who are steam enthusiasts, here is some interesting info that I just read:

  1. The former Boston & Albany (B&A) was an leader in new power equipment, and bought new locomotives constantly.
  2. When the first Berkshire (A1 class) arrived on the B&A, freight over the Berkshire Mountains of western MA was handled by slow moving 2-8-0's, medium sized 2-8-2's, 13  2-6-6-2's, and 10  2-10-2's, and  a small number of Heavy Mike's. Get this.....it took 10 to 14 hours for a freight train to travel 100 miles from Boston to Selkirk, NY ( just outside Albany)
  3. In March of 1925, this all changed when Lima's prototype Berkshire number 1 arrived. A test was planned. An H-10 Mikado left Selkirk for Pittsfield, Ma with a drag of 46 cars and 1691 tons behind it's drawbar. 47 minutes later, the new A1 Berkshire, with 54 cars, and 2296 tons behind it's drawbar, then headed east. The Berkshire steamed into Pittsfield 10 minutes ahead of the Mikado that had left Selkirk with a 47 minute head start and a 25% lighter load.
  4. The climb from Boston is from sea level (0) to 1459 feet at the highest point in the Berkshires at Washington Summit.
  5. The B&A immediately puchased 25 new Berkshires, followed by additional orders over the next decade.
  6. The Texas & Pacific was even more impressed at the demonstration and they purchased 10...2-10-4's which became the first commercial super power locomotives.
  7. The second order for Bershires fro the B&A was class a-1b which was essentially a squared off and built up sand dome in order to hold more sand for traction on the steep hills.
  8. Eventually all the earlier 1-a Berks had their sand domes modified also.
  9. All of the 2-10-2's were sold to Canadian National (CN)  and the 2-6-6-2's were scrapped.
  10. The H-10 Mikados were thransfered to the NYC for lines west of the Berkshires.
  11. The 8 wheel tenders carried 9600 gallons of water and 16 tons of coal which allowed the Berkshires to run all the way from Boston, through Springfield, over the Berkshire Mountains and into Selkirk yard.
  12. The Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo, jointly owned by the NYC and the CP was having trouble moving freight, so in 1927 the Heavy Mikado was tested against the A-1 Berkshire, and again the Berkshire proved superior, resulting in an order to the Montreal Locomotive Works for the only two 2-8-4's ever built in Canada. They were numberd 201 & 202 and are near duplicates of B&A 1433.

 See you guys at lunch,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Mike, sorry to hear of your loss! Our thoughts and prayers for you and the family!

Garry, I'm trying to make up for all of those pies, burgers, pizzas, etc... I ate earlier in the Diner. Also, helps in pinching the My 2 cents [2c] too!

PC, thanks for lunch today, but I'll have a 1/2 cup of plain tuna, a slice of wheat toast and some hot tea.

Dick, thanks for the Berkshire info.
