I live in a town where the local hobby shop has not progressed beyond the "Plasticville" buildings, they have never heard of Cornerstone, DPM, etc., so I therefore buy 99.9% of my buildings through the Walther's catalog from Bruce's Train Shop in Sacramento (my sister lives about two miles away from the store). When I get the buildings, thanks to the US Mail, I generally begin painting and construction imediately and then they will sometimes be used right away, but more often than not they get put on a shelf and i decide where they are going to go later. This generally works well, but on occassion I have had to (carefully) re-paint a building before placing it. I think the reason is because I need to order by mail.

I always follow the rule, if I like it , and I have money I buy it.
The times that I have had the most time to relax and enjoy the hobby of Model Railroading have been times of layoff or unemployment.
SO, When I have the money and see something intriguing I buy it and add to the heap of delights that await my next RIF or layoff.

Rip open that box and Throw it on the track!

Even though my layout is incomplete, I always put the new item out there if nothing else to just simply let it run around the track or to see how it looks. If I like what I see, it gets to stay that way, If I dont like it, I look to see what can be changed. This is true for locos, cars,& buildings.

   Have fun with your trains

Now, I can't work on the track and detail I want in the center areas, without damaging what's already done!!
Solution: Out come the wrecking tools....and conversion from a 4x8 table to an around-the-wall layout, no more than 2 feet wide at any point except the end loops.
Ah. yes...A modeler's work is never done!

I buy engines, rolling stock, structures, etc, then store them for future use. I'm looking forward to semi-retirement in about four years, have a good income to afford the toys now but not the time to invest in a layout now.I have started a 4x8 n scale with slow progress.
I had purchased almost anything that caught my eye.Now I buy undecorated or decorated items pertaining to Maine railroads,Maine Central,Bangor and Aroostook,Boston and Maine etc.
Anything I purchase now I will look at it ,maybe run it on an oval track, then goes to storage.

I buy, whether its off of e-bay,or out of a store for assembly and when our club has a set up .I use my fleet. Now this doesn't mean that they All get assembled right away!!We need another box put on there to select from. When the mood strikes, or when the busy summer schedule finally slows down to where you can sit home, look around, and tell everyone,"Just leave me alone,Im busy!" That's when you do kit your work!!!! Gale.

The stage of my modeling is "planning and accumulating". I purchase the items I plan to run on my O-scale, 3-rail layout and store them because I have no space in my apartment for a permanent layout. However, I have plenty of track, power (both in locomotives and transformers), rolling stock to take over the living room floor and circle furniture. For short-term enjoyment and accomplishment is to connect the living room circle with the spare bedroom circle. I need to buy more curved track and switches to complete a connection.

One day (very soon hopefully) my domination of the basement will occur!

This is a hard one to answer with only the four selections. Most of my new purchases are assembled and boxed for transport to and from the model railroad club (not one of the selections) and may not be used right away. They can't be left on the layout for any length of time except during show season, so they go back into the box for storage or to return home for fine tuning or maintenance.

I usually can't wait to try out a new item. Be it a locomotive or car. I usually run it for a while then go to something else. The same with my cars. Most of my equipment is from the 60s era. but there is some from the 40s and a little from the 90s.

I am currently creating my fleet of loco's and rolling stock, most of the loco's are RTR with some kits while the bulk of the rolling stock being in kit form. The layout should start next year in my new home Finally.

Typical of many Model railroaders. I buy what I like, and what fits the time period I am modeling. Some items get built shortly after purchase and installed on Layout. Ready to run, or previously used built rolling stock, locomotives usually get placed on Layout. Kits more likely to be inventoried and stored for future use and future larger layout. True you have to buy some items when you see them, or you may not find them again later.
