I did not realise it but it totals 45 including B units.
Mostly Santa Fe but some Rio Grande with a couple of Mopac and CB&Q.
The problem comes from trying to afford to put decoders in them.

Is it actually possible to ever have enough trains?

I honestly can't be sure... I think about 12,

This is more than enough for a small layout like mine. An armchair modeller friend asked me when I'm getting the traffic report helicopter!

I like steam but diesels predominate because of cost vs performance. Even the plastic steam locos coming out now are out of my budget but I can always seem to get a diesel on special for < $100 Canadian.

the Cape Northern owns mostly rebuilt locomotives but here it goes;

2 - GP38-4s
2 - GP9M-2s
2 - SW1500s
2 - FP10MACs (hard to explain this rebuild)
1 - SD40-2
1 - SD23-1 (2,300 hp CAT engine rebuild of a SD9)
1 - B-27-8R

and that is the CPN fleet.
Plus the Missouri Valley RR (a short line) owns a single SW7 with a 567BC for power.

I myself have probably about 100 HO locomotives in my collection, not counting my tinplate trains. The reason I have so many is because I buy almost all of my trains used and am constantly searching for bargains. I can't turn down a train I don't have at a cheap price.

So cast your vote and share some coments. Also, if you own a hobby shop with hundreds of trains in stock, that doesn't count.

Sorry it was a mistake! So, this is my roster (all in Z scale 1:220):
-11 GE Dash 9-44 CW's
-5 EMD F7 A's (I don't speak here of my 5 dummy B's)
-5 EMD SD 45's
-3 EMD GP 38-2's
-1 EMD F45
-1 EMD E8
-1 Alco PA1

So a total of 27 units (+ 4 soon arriving EMD SD 40-2's)

Cheers,
Dominique

I have 26 various types of motive power in just about as many road names. I am not a rivet counter nor a protype Modeler. I buy what I like and what looks good to me. I know this might rankle the feathers of some die hards but It is my railroad.

To all you die hards out there, Keep It Up, your layouts are the reason I got interested in this hobby in the first place.

Have 14 Z-scale locomotives, 13 brass. At about $500 a pop for the brass, a pretty hefty investment. At least I know my marriage is secure, because she hasn't divorced me yet!

I currently have 21, all HO scale. I model the Southern and the L&N in the late 40's-early 50's, and so have a mix of late steam and early diesel. When the Broadway Limited Heavy Mikes arrive I'll add 2 of them. I think that will complete the roster.
At least that's the game plan thus far.

I have more than 100 because I have been collecting for more than 47 years. Most are in HO, but I have N, S, O and G also. Several are ones that were given to me when people got rid of their trains. If I can I try to fix them up and give to kids to get them started in the hobby. Since many models are limited production these days I have been buying some of my favorite HO locomotives while I can,
