Why can't we see some HO scale Amtrak Pacific Sufliner cars? Athearn has made the engine but no cars.

Walthers with the assistance of Northeastern Models and John Keil Line-Products produced all but the Super Dome in the seventies, in O-scale. These 2 rail scale cars were PERFECT-awesome! Absolute-brass quality built up. These kits were based like many of the semi-scratch built style kits of the era, using all white metal and brass parts, with wood base and sub-roof. The skytop was an injected molded part that was painted by the builder. The mold was a perfect 1/4 scale reproduction of the complex window arangements unlike the "too rounded" recent brass versions made through Korea and imported, at that cost they should really work on this, I bought some only because of my love affair with tha cars. They produced the complete Olympian with the Pullman built sleeper skytop, and the Twin Cities Hiawatha cars with the original milw built cars with the wood interiors. The trucks were also dead on as well, Nystrom prototype, that until recently were never produced in HO. I am not an expert on Half O (HO) however the prospeccts of producing a line of Hiawatha-kits, would be a wonderful move forward in that scale or any! These cars were some of the most distinctive designs ever created, may someone work up the molds!

Passenger cars are almost as numerous as freight cars as far as modeling goes. I would love to see (in plastic) the Milwaukee Road Hiawatha Skytop Lounge tailcars made. I believe there were 3 versions of them. First off , there was the 1955 version, with its orange, maroon and silver. Then orange and silver and finally the Milw/UP yellow scheme. I also would like to see it done in Canadian National colors (who purchased some of them for their needs shortly after AMTRAK took over the passenger systems. These should be done in H.O. and N scale if anyone can afford to start a project this vast. Mold making? Expensive. Yes. To keep costs down, make them kits, not built-ups. Can anyone produce them for under $40 each? I don't know if this is a realistic price or just a model railroad dream. If this can be done, maybe the rest of the Milwaukee Road passenger consists could be introduced at a later time. Are you listening, manufacturers?

I would like to see walthers redo the metal line in plastic...

plastic oscars and pikers show that it can be done.

The issue is that I would like to see more than the rivarossi 1920s coach out there for heavyweight coaches.

Rivarossi's, and Athearns are all variants on commuter cars. Funaro and Camerlengo have also focused on commuter cars.

Branchline's new items are a good start. However, I would love to see the walthers paired and single window metal side coaches in plastic.

I model the DL&W (lackawanna) and there is a lack (no pun intended) of heavyweight long-distance passenger equipment. Streamlined stuff can be had, but I want to focus around 1941-43 so heavyweights are a necessity.

The metal cars have become collector's items, and I find it very tedious to redo the window strip on a rivarossi coach for what I need. I have done it twice and care to not do it again.

The parts available from NERS to make all sorts of pullmans and things are a great boon. They have aided me in several projects. However, it is getting harder to find "parts" cars to use as the bodies. Cheap AHM/old Rivarossi 12-1 pullmans are getting scarce.

Kitbits from bethlehem car works have also proven to be a boon. They have some passenger car kits as well.

Basically in a nutshell...In this day and age of specific prototype offerings, I would like to see good "generic" passenger cars...a la athearn but longer, as I doubt I will see specific DL&W long haul stuff...commuter stuff yes, but not long-haul.

Plastic heavyweight solarium cars would be great too...

agreeing with Rick(rsn48), I like VIA, West Coast Express, Rocky Mountaineer Rail Tours, and the CHRISTMAS train. (HO scale for me.
I'd be considered one of the "youngsters" and woulld like to see more current day items - generally
what about a Molson's passenger car painted in the "I AM Canadian" logo?

cheers, krump

Here is an excerpt from my post on the "what else do we need?" thread http://www.trains.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6449. All are needed in N scale:

QUOTE: PASSENGER CARS
For makers of N scale passenger cars to sell individual cars rather than in sets, especially head-end cars, coaches, and pullmans. (Diners and Observation cars tend to accumulate in excess of need.)

Heavyweight passenger car core kits, in sizes suitable for both head-end cars and full-length passenger cars

A trailer to match the Bachmann Doodlebug

TRACTION
Everything!
Chicago "L" Cars
GE Little Joes

I also would like to see all passenger car manufacturers sell individual cars, unpainted. (Are you listening, MDC, Kato, and Rivarossi?)

I would like to see the Oscar and Piker come back. Fits around anybody's curves. Or how about a Skytop Oscar?
Also, some ribside cars. Could make a punch set for the unusual shaped windows and have the sides marked or lines cast inside (like Pikestuff structure kits). Nystrom trucks would be nice. The UP guys should be asking for some MILW stuff, city trains after '55 pooled equipment.

Kind of an odd one, but I would like to see some of the "newer" Light Rail Vehicles in use around the US. Some of the Siemens cars in use in Portland, Salt Lake City, Denver, San Diego, Houston. Some of the Kinky Shariio (sp) cars in use in Dallas, New Jersey, and San Jose. If we want to get kids into this hobby, they want to model what they see. I'm 27 and have never seen an F unit in action. However I have seen plenty of P42's and MAC 90's and I model those. I would LOVE to model some light rail vehicles on my layout. They would look great in the downtown area. It would be fun to just model a light rail layout and try and fit some freight operations into it. Here in Salt Lake city the Light rail line has to stop running at midnight, and freight operations take over the line from midnight to 5 am. But with no LRV's this isn't really an option.

It is very difficult to name specific passenger cars since so many were 'road specific'. In N scale the streamliner era cars are becoming better represented all the time through a multitude of manufacturers. What is desperately needed are accurate representations of Amfleet 1, Amfleet 2, and Bombardier Horizon cars. The reason is twofold. Firstly, it fills a void in the current offerings that will allow current varni***o be represented on modern era layouts. Secondly, if marketed as sets, it attracts a whole new generation of Model Railroaders with trains that they can personally associate with. I believe that you will find that most Model Railroaders 'love affair' with trains began with train travel.. Attracting a whole new generation is vital to the future of this hobby. It needs a properly marketed set that appeals to the next generation. I believe the afore mentioned cars are that set!

How about the C&NW Bi-Level Buffet car? These were pretty much identical to the PS Bilevels made by Walthers but had some windows plated over, there's a kit to convert one available from Three Brothers Mfg, INC. according to the Walthers website, though I'd like to see this vehicle ready-to-run as these kits are hard to find here in the UK, and I know I couldn't make it look as good as the Walthers cars I already have!

How about instead of HO proto-typ's , we get some shorter pass. cars which can make a smaller radius . I think the reason you don't see more passenger layouts is the fact that most of us don't have the Super Dome for space . New car designs which carry the intent of the proto type , are shorter ,but look half way decent going around a corner would be nice. I know LifeLike makes a 60' model , but it looks more like a toy-set car more than a proto , & it only comes in lightweight fluted . You have to add mucho's detail to get a fairly good looking unit , or how about a 60' heavyweight that will take a 18" radius : look good doing it & have some detail . This would work with the scale compression theory . The manufacturing of such a car(s) would increase the availability of rolling stock for us "Passenger Heads" . I mean , damn the "Freight Freaks" have so much to pick from , besides the fact they have all that proto data that splashed all over most magz's .If you run a seven car consit on my layout it takes up almost half of one leg . I have a 10' x 12' former bedroom that I use & the layout is " U " shaped . Those of us out here who do pass. modeling & operations need to have some representation too ! If we had shorter cars we could also use smaller # turnouts , thereby saving more space . You know the proto. railroads ran a lot of pass. service , but it is seldom mentioned & minimal info. is avaliable . I've taken to buying cheaper cars & cutting them down . I then , look at the carbody & remove that portion which is repeated most often . This gives me the flavor of the car , but allows operation on tighter turns . I've tried it with cutting down 85' / 4 wheel truck unit & now I'm on to Hvy. wght. / 6 wheelers . If any one else has tried this or has another idea please let me know . Until then I'll keep lobbying for 60'ers & preach my story to anyone who will listen .Maybe , if enough of us "Passenger Heads" get together , we can get some action . Come on manufacturers ! You guys read this stuff once in awhile . Let's get moving on this .
