Up until now, I haven't been modifying any of our pics because I want them to look like our layout. Photoshop is great for getting the color right and cropping photos though. The depth of feild problems my camera has are an issue. I'd like good macro performance to get the shot angles I'm after but still retain good depth of field. I'd rather spend the $$$ on finishing the layout right now, but maybe later a decent digital camera will find it's way into my shopping cart. [:)]
You're on the right track by getting the new camera. There is a learning curve to it though. I found that out with a borrowed camera. It's a hobby within a hobby!

There may be a setting on your camera that controls for light - the setting compensate for low light conditions. Also it looks like you may need to use the macro mode - with the camera closer to the engine to pick up the details you want us to see.

Aside from that you should consider using a spotlight to light the "shadowed" side - in this case the spotlight might point so that is perpendicular (straight toward) to the side of the engine. A clip on spot light can be mounted to your camera tripod and angled at your subject - to better light the shadow.

A white backbround such as a cloth or white paper lined shadow box (which can be made with just a carton) would be good too. See photo - taken showing some of the techniques discussed.

Here's my projects over the last week or so:

This is a Tyco GP-20 shell with some modifications on an Athearn frame. I've finished the base coat of yellow and will be decaling it some time soon.



My short line must have maintenance vehicles! I made the hi-rail truck from a Magnuson kit and the fuel truck from a cheap plastic toy. It looks they are working late in the evening from all the shadows and the slanted sun rays.



Number 102, a GP-60, received a can motor, NWSL wheels, and Ernst slow speed gearing this week. I'm in the process of breaking in the gears right now.



I also went railfanning, but that's a different topic to post. Have a great weekend!
