I think it will be quite a while before I will have one of those on my layout.... LOL I guess it is what ever people are willing to pay. Do wish I had 3 or 4 sitting downstairs that I could sell. It would certainly pay for that new BLI loco I have been eyeballing! [:O]

It will probably never get built. The winner will keep it as a collectable and/or offer it again later at a higher price. Just like the FSM kits - I wonder what percentage of them actually get built, rather than kept for future sale?

Bob is likely to be correct here. Unfortunately, when any hobby gets an "investment" element, then the ordinary participant loses out. Just look what happens every decade or so in the classic auto market! Just out of curiosity, does nayone know what this retialed for in 1999?

Well, I only have two statements to make after viewing that:

1) For that weight and cost, I hope that it came with REAL bricks
2) Will Rogers quote still holds true

It went for about $350.00 new, if memory serves me correctly. These kits are getting pretty insane. I'm sure the castings are great but at $1400.00, there are a lot of nice kits one could own. Heck you might even get Banta or Yorke to build you a custom kit at that price....Funny thing is that if it was built up it might fetch two or three hundred....Reminds me of 50's Stratocasters.

These kits retailed for $425.00 in 1999. The price is on the box if you look. SRMW kits really are phenomonal. They seem to make the other premium kits look amateurish. Here I'm referring to the amount and quality of the castings present. They had a waterfront kit that I believe had over 700 castings to it.

I hope with some of the limited editions we see in this hobby, we don't start to see the scalping I've seen in the collecting hobby.

It really sucks when someone buys a bunch of things only to turn around and immediately sell them at a higher price.

Wow. Wish I had bought a couple when they came out. But then, I would probably end up building the things lol. I remember buying two of the Walthers tugboats right when they were discontinued and lamenting he fact that I paid about $50.00 a piece when I could have gotten them for about $45.00 a few months earlier. Just saw one go on e ebay for about $130.00. Could have more than doubled my money!! But then I wouldn't had the joy of building/painting/detailing them and putting on the names "Jerri K" (wife to be - we're getting married this Saturday) and "David III" (my son).

And here I am worried about paying $40 ish for the Roundhouse I want for my layout, and then looking at the Walther's site and seeing one there for $159 and thinking why would someone pay that much for a 3 bay Roundhouse? LOL!

This E-bay kit must have been something else!

If you're going to sleep on the couch for a week, it should be for something that includes the words "Crown" or "Precision Scale."

Well, the high bid quoted works out around the same as a good brass O-scale steam loco kit over here, including wheels, motor, etc to complete. You'd get a large 4-6-2 tender loco for this sort of sum and it would have a similar level of detail. In G scale this would buy you one of the LGB RhB electric locos - again, gorgeous model, will buy one if I ever have the money, currently financially restricted to their smaller models!

I guess it's not such a crazy sum when considered compared to these items. If you only model HO and plan for this to be the centrepiece of your life's work, and have the disposable income needed, then it makes sense. Personally I wouldn't pay this much for scenery, but that's just my personal tastes - I prefer to spend money on locos, stock, etc. I'm a little surprised the manufacturer hasn't re-introduced this kit as the demand is clearly there.

This guy paid over 3 times the amount of a product that was made only 6 years ago. Granted it was a limited run, but for that kind of money you can buy a few BLI's for that roundhouse on your layout that looks just right to you. Correct? 'Nuff said.
