hmmmm, 5 stall roundhouse, let's say you put 5 brass locos into that puppy, at $1k+ each..., makes sense to me. Stunning scenery is its own reward, although in this case, it could be a curse. After all, who want their roundhouse to be putting their cheapo IHC locos to shame, eh?

Of course, I doubt if I'll ever pay that much for an HO scale roundhouse, but then again, I don't do HO.

If this item was being offered as a finished model, done by a master craftsman, I'd say maybe it's worth the money. The amount offered by the winning bidder in no way indicates he is a skilled modeler and actually capable of completing the model in any reasonable fashion and thus making the expenditure worthwhile. Then again, our hobby has seen an influx of people with more money than brains in recent years!

However, what I expect is even more likely is that this kit has been purchased not to build at all but rather to put up on a shelf as a collectible or even for pure speculation purposes. On the Yahoo FSM site it's been kicked around that fully half of all of George's kits go to collectors/speculators and are never built. I suspect the same holds true for SRMW and I have to say that I find this aspect of the hobby very strange indeed.

I can't imagine buying something and then not using it. I collect a lot of things...for instance, comics...every book that I've bought has been handled and read by me. Otherwise what's the point? I used to collect action figures, after seeing how much some of the older StarWars figures went for in their original packaging...but then I thought where's the fun in that? It's a toy, play with it or pass it on to someone who will enjoy it more than me.

I can't imagine buying a kit for that much and not actually using it. I know of people who do this, but it is very strange. The original creator of this kit put the effort into making a product people will enjoy. How can you enjoy it when it's sitting in a box on the shelf? What's the point? Why not just sell empty boxes to those who don't want to actually build the model...I'll gladly take the innards off their hands.

Wow I think I'll stick to the atlas roundhouse I've already got.I agree with trevoyg my layout hasen't cost that much yet either to build. I wouldn't want to guess what i've spent on the stuff to go on the layout yet though. Rob
