Near a cornfield in Indiana...
For me, it has always been the lithograph, "Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas", by Norman Rockwell.
I first saw a print when I was a kid and my mom worked in the house of a wealthy family, who had returned to the UK from Canada.
I used to stand looking, because it depicted a lifestyle that seemed so far removed from my own.
As the saying goes, 'a picture paints a 1000 words'.

Have you thought of setting up memorials for them on a site like "findagrave.com" ??
You can include photos (of both the headstone and the person), and can enter a brief text description as well. There's no charge, it's free (at least at findagrave).
It will give them just a little more than "a name and a date" for the years to come.
One of the issues with a fireplace is they are very inefficient. In some cases, they take heat from inside the house and send it up the chimney.
Even with that, I enjoy the fire so much I'll put up with it.

Good Evening,
I grew up in a house with a fireplace but it was only lit at Christmas. The first house I bought had one, that was before I got married. We had one installed in our present house 25 years ago but haven't used it much in the past 5 years as my wife says the smoke is toxic. We have a gas one in the basement TV room which is where I hang out most of the time.
Been running errands today. We got a free turkey with our grocery order today, a nice bonus. It is a top grade one too.

My favorite's in order are:
A Christmas Story
White Christmas
Miracle on 34th Street
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Mike
My favorite is "A Christmas Story".
You'll put your eye out.

MisterBeasley For me, the ɓest Chrismas movie is still Miracle on 34th Street. I has all the holiday charm and magic anyone could want. It's a Wonderful Life takes place at Chrismas, but it's not really about Chrismas, although it's still a fine movie in its own right.

Water Level Route Howdy diners. Janie, a cherry coke please. Such beautiful stories in the diner lately. My wife and daughters were going to watch a Christmas movie last night. I was looking forward to it and was going to join until their choice of movie came to light. Home Alone. The movie itself is fine, but I just wasn't in the mood for it. Wanted something more classic, like White Christmas. Oh well, there will be other movie nights. Got some more work done on the Accurail reefer kits I've been working on. Maybe I'll actually have them done by next weekend for next weekend's photo fun? No snow at all here. Bums me out. Just isn't Christmas to me without it. Have a nice Sunday gentlemen!

Howdy diners. Chloe, a pile of chocolate chip cookies and a big glass of milk please.
I love a wood burning fireplace. My grandparent's house had one that was in near continual use during the winter months. I absolutely loved laying on the floor in front of the fireplace, usually playing with dominoes on the hearth. I was so sad the day I learned they installed a wood stove insert into the fireplace. Looking back, I get why they did it, but I still never really got over it.
My mom and stepdad had a house for quite a while with a fireplace. While they burned logs in it for the first several years they were there, after they had a chimney fire they converted it to gas. Still nice, but not on the same level as wood.
Good morning, diners. Bacon, eggs, and black coffee, please.
It was a cold walk this morning. No snow, and none predicted for the next weeks. That doesn't upset me, but the grandkids all coming for Christmas like to have snow. Some of them don't see any snow unless they come here.
TF, my wife loves those fire logs. She has a supply to burn when I'm not around to build a regular fire. My daughters and families all have gas fireplaces, so they love to come here to watch and smell a real fireplace.
We have really cut back on Christmas decorations. We used to do a lot, but now have just a tree and some things on the fireplace mantel. Outside, my wife bought one of those projectors that shows a manger scene onto the wall. I sometimes miss all the stuff, but when it's time to take it down, I'm glad we don't do more.
Have a great day, everyone.
How about this one -- my state made the cut for the UP calendar!

Good morning Diners. A large coffee please, Zoe.
Log fires? Oh I love a log fire. Our old house was the one to burn logs.
Starting the day collecting the logs from the store in the old stable whilst Dawn started the fire going. Once alight I had the joyful job of putting logs on the fire through the day.
Days around Christmas were best. The decorations were up. Christmas trees in each room; real trees off course. Lights and more lights. Over the top some would say, but Dawn loves loads of decorations. Music is playing on the radio; Christmas music naturally.
It is evening, snow is falling, logs burn, the Christmas lights are twinkling. Our son has roasted some chestnuts, our daughter has made some broth. Settle down and tales being told. Stories handed down, of 1947, and of recent times. Dawn would open a bottle of sherry or port. A few snacks on a plate. All the time logs were added to the fire.
See you on the slopes!

Ya ever buy those fake logs? My life is Simplified with those.
Judy buys those things by the 6 pack Just light the paper and go. 1 1/2 hour logs, or a 3 hour log. They're done when they say they're going to be done, and no need to hang around and watch the fire, they don't pop.
Perfect! No kindling for me to kick the tires and light the fires, cuz I'm a bit tired.in the evening, and just want to relax before Hitting the Rack
The log's dim and that must be about 3 hours.

Haven't had time to watch the Christmas Vacation classic with Chevy Chase yet Mike. That's a good one
She's been making things to difficult from the start, and I'm kinda regretting taking this one on.
The Cavell cabinets would have came in after Thanksgiving and Cavell would have placed them in the space.
Somehow things couldn't have waited that long so she went with the Klearview cabinets from Menards. Those came around just as late anyway.
What a nightmare, they showed up with about a hundred boxes stacked. It took about 3 hours to organize them and group things together.
The cabinet doors are a beautiful bright white, but the actual cabinets themselves came in shells, and have to have their inners assembled and are a different color called linen. They want you to buy their stick on strips that peel off. After seeing the display at the store they certainly peel off.
The towers as I'll call them, or the pantries as they are, came in multiple pieces and had to be completely assembled, along with the other hundred boxes for the rest of this poor design. They weigh about 250 pounds after they're together. The hinges are another story, as you can't have pull outs without spacers between the cabinets. What are you going to do with that, when you have no space in-between the walls as a sandwich fit is on this job. I'm going to have to stop by Rockler and get some real hinges.
I'll show you pictures when the crowns are on, and some sense is made of these things. The more I'm dealing with these oddball cabinets, the more traditional cabinets with normal face frames are.
Have a good evening and a wonderful start to your Monday morning gentleman7
Mild? When I went out for some groceries this morning it was 68F. It's cooled down some with the rain we're getting, but it's still warm for December in Delaware.
Last year, we had no collecting snow at all, which was also unusual. Our community does the roads, but two years ago we paid to have guys with equipment just to do the driveway.
Good Morning,
Expecting another mild day here with 25F. We only got 4" of snow from the storm but roads are icy so I will stay in until tomorrow.
Headstones sure don't tell much of the people. My paternal grandparents passed in 1947 and 1961. My sister and I are the only people who know anything about them and when we pass they will just be names and dates.
Bear, a very nice story.
Made a list of all the HO locos I have owned. I have sold 14 and have 10 left. Of those 3 are brass and I only run the Pacific regularly. The 2 Hudsons mostly are display units. I run them occasionally but my 22" radius is a stretch for them.
No plans for today.

The grave of author Henry David Thoreau is surprisingly bereft of details of the man's life. It is a simple rough-hewn stone in his family's plot, saying simply "Henry." As I recall, it's less than a foot tall, and it reminds one of the grave of an infant who passed during childbirth. Henry was 44 years old when tuberculosis got him.

Maybe they should start putting URLs on the tombstone.
Mom and dad are burried in a veteran's Cemetary: Name, Rank, Branch of Service, amd maybe the war they served in if any. Moms name and dates on the stone as well. The North Carolina State Veteran's Cemetary does not accept cadavers any more, only ashes. The stones are all very uniform. Maybe the cemetary should offer URLs. Faminly could add such deyails as they like.
Watchout for the Moose on the highway.
Ah ! Yes! Bear is romantic.
Such a lovely story, Bear. Thanks for posting.

THE DASH OF LIFEA walk around any cemetery you find the same. Gravestones; some old, some not so. All have the same on them. The name, date of birth and date of death. Between those dates is the Dash of Life. The Dash of Life, the most important part of the person buried, yet very little, if anything, is known. What did the person do in life? The ups and down of life; tears of sadness, the tears of joy. Knowing of other births, other deaths. The daily life, birthdays, Christmases, a myriad of emotions. The Dash of Life now forgotten, just a date of birth and a date of death.See. Here is one. Born 1924, died 1947, a young woman just 23 years of age. See also a baby is there also. A baby girl born and died not the same day, but three days before her mother passed to the other side. Did the mother die because of complications of the birth of the girl. Nobody knows except a few. The Dash of Life doesn't tell us.Those that know know the woman was born in the U.S.A.; Pennsylvania so it has been said. American born father Scottish born mother, two older sisters and a younger brother her immediate family. Nothing is known of her childhood. Those that knew never told. Those that didn't never asked.Whatever, her father died and her mother and children. left the U.S.A., their destination England. They settled in the county of Northumberland. Her two sisters and brother married locally. Their own stories are their own Dash of Life. The Dash of Life of the young lady was coming to the end, though of course she did not know it. The Second World War began. Once again the Dash of Life is but a dash. Little is known of what she did in the war, but as the saying goes 'She did her bit'. Sometime near the end of the war she met the love of her life. They married after the war ended. Just a local ceremony in a Registry Office. A child is expected; no it is twins. It is said, a difficult birth. Difficult is an understatement. A girl is born then a boy. What was joy to the lady began to turn to despair. The girl died within two hours, the boy suffered a stroke and has a hole in the heart. He was not expected to live long. Twenty four hours passed, then forty eight the boy still lives. Then everything changes. The story goes, the lady began choking. What caused it is unknown, but other patients began calling for a nurse to attend. The nurses were having a tea break and ignored the pleas for help. Eventually a nurse did attend after her tea break, but it was too late.THE DASH OF LIFE of a twenty three year old. 1924 - 1947.
Good morning, diners. It's cold and windy with some snow flurries.
It seems that after a busy week, I have a day with nothing scheduled. Of course, that will change once my wife gets up -- I will find out that I have a bunch of things to do.
More layout work today -- I'm making good progress on the bridge. It's been a several months project. It actually was about three hours work, but took so long because I don't know what I'm doing, so I sit and think about it for hours.
Have a great Saturday, everyone.
