Good Morning Diners.  Flo, are there any leftovers from the dinner Brent left last night?  I'll take some for breakfast if so!

Having grown up in Florida, I saw few trains

I feel your pain.  I grew up in the middle of nowhere.  My small town had a Chessie System branch that ran through it on the way to the car ferries in Ludington, MI.  Problem was, I grew up out in the country, so rarely was near those tracks, much less be lucky enough to catch a train on them.

Like finding a cherry in the coal pile.

I read years ago that prior to dieselization, the highest selling road name in Lionel trains was the New York Central.  Once diesels hit the scene, that rapidly switched to the Santa Fe.  Wonder why?  Whistling  Cherry in the coal pile indeed!

Back to the dentist tomorrow to get the temporary crown replaced with the final cap. I miss my old GE dental insurance. This is $1800 in train money I had to spend.

I had a tooth crowned a couple of years ago. I think it had been cracked for a long time because the pain would come and go, but it was never all too bad.

After the crown was installed, it took about eight weeks to get used to it, and I have felt great since.

My first "exposure" to the Burlington was when I was but a little tyke (well, around ten or so) and I'd spend a lot of time around the Collinwood yard of the New York Central. Around there all the engines were black or dark gray.

Then one day something like this showed up!

Years later I visited Chicago and got to ride some of the CB&Q's bi-level trains along the "race track" which was their main line out to Aurora that passed through many of the Chicago suburbs at an amazing speed!

I think your notes are spot on.  Don't foget, the "Burlington" in the name came from the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy, whose tracks ran right by Carthage.  In fact, they had the northwest half of Illinois pretty well covered.

Thanks for that reminder.

Having grown up in Florida, I saw few trains, and I have a limited concept of how the rail network actually was formed.

Good afternoon by one minute.  Bacon and eggs for lunch.

Tin Can II
There was a bit of excitement in town yesterday; as their was a high speed chase that ended in a shootout at a local truck stop.  Male suspect was killed, his female companion was severely wounded, and several law officers were shot and one was bitten by a police dog (friendly fire, so to speak).  Three were flown to Wichita for medical care.

Talk about Dodge City old west action!  Hope the police were not seriously injured.

Starting work on the soffit tomorrow.

My arms and shoulders are hurting just thinking about what you're doing.  It's good you're younger and in better shape than me.

It's been a busy day so far, and the next several days are more busy.  Tomorrow -- another funeral!  I'm on record pace the last six months in number of funerals attended.

In between all the action, I hope to get to the layout this afternoon.  I'm stuck on waiting for some tax info from some investments, and I can't go any farther with the tax forms until I get them.  It's always a good feeling to have them done.

In the late 70s, before computerized taxes, I got my forms finished, check written, and ready for mailing.  I went to the main post office in downtown New Orleans at 11:45 p.m. on April 15.  There was a line of cars a mile long to get into the post office.  Luckily, they had postal workers out at the street, taking the mailings, and they assured us that even though it was after midnight, the forms would be postmarked for the 15th.  Things are much easier nowadays.

Have a good rest of the day, everyone.

Trains in Georgia in 2016:

-Photograph by Kevin Parson

The second locomotive is an SD-45, and is the only SD-45 I have ever seen in operation.

This train passed me at a grade crossing, and I saw that locomotive, then the chase was on. The train stopped in this yard, and I could not get close. Too many railroad workers and too many No Trespassing signs. I also did not have my Canon DSLR.

I took this picture with my company cell phone. It was the best I could do.

It certainly is.  I'm a big fan of those 30 Geeps as well, especially in Cascade Green.

Got my eyes open for a CB&Q to add as a Teamster.  They will look great together but can't find one with knuckles. Perhaps the Train Show this Spring.  eBay

Adding a GN splash of Omaha Orange to the mix, certainly will make for a colorful, Track Treat of Flavors.  Can you imagine those three pieces of Eye Candy rolling down the rails? Stick out tongue

For Sure.  It was my thoughts you'ld enjoy that one tooSmile  Wilson, certainly seems to be popular with the chickensLaugh

Well, The last snowstorm there was this new Toro snowblower in the road right-of-way on the way to the gas station.  After it was put in the back of my truck, to wait and see if the owner would come back looking for it, my phone number was left with the station manager just in case he did.  Also called the Police Department to leave my number as I'd like to see it get back to its owner.

It's been almost a month now and have no idea what I'm going to do with this snow blower in the Boiler Room.  Unfortunately none of my friends need one or I'd help a brother out.

Looked it up and found that it's $700 retail.  Winter must be good for something?  It may be getting time to visit the pawn shop soon, to see if it will fund a 3-day weekend get-awayLaugh

Not saying I was happy when my alarm went off at 5:00 this morning, but I went to bed at 8:30 last night and I feel MUCH better today.  Thank goodness!  Yesterday was rough.

I am trying to add two brake lines from the reservoir to the regulator on an ACF 2 bay covered hopper.  For some reason the kit didn't have a brake cylinder, so I'm trying just the two lines.

Good luck. Adding brake lines is a good detail that is worth the time. I hope it all goes well for you.

Hi Everyone,

Brunhilda, coffee with cream, please.

Just dropping in to say hello.  Over the last few months, I've managed to build a few unbuilt car kits that I've had laying around.  Nothing special, just standard kits.  I am trying to add two brake lines from the reservoir to the regulator on an ACF 2 bay covered hopper.  For some reason the kit didn't have a brake cylinder, so I'm trying just the two lines.  This is a first attempt to do something like this.  We'll see how it goes.

Chicago is notorious for long cold winters, probably because there's more people here to moan and groan about it.  However, this winter has been remarkably mild so far.  Not that I'm complaining, but I don't expect it to last.  I imagine February will get back to reality.

Less is more,...more or less!

According to my notes, this was near Carthage, Illinois in 1989, but I do not associate Illinois with the BN. Maybe my notes were wrong.

I think your notes are spot on.  Don't foget, the "Burlington" in the name came from the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy, whose tracks ran right by Carthage.  In fact, they had the northwest half of Illinois pretty well covered.

I lost only one battle with the IRS, and that was a case in which I finally gave up and paid an amount, even though I still believe I was right.  It had turned into something that was going to cost me more money to fight it than just to pay it.

I vaguely recall an instance when I was just a wee lad when my parents got a check from the IRS for more than what they were expecting, with an accompanying letter saying that the IRS had audited their return and found they were due more than what they had orignally filed for.  My parents didn't buy it, and filed the check away instead of cashing it.  Low and behold, some time later they received a letter in the mail from the IRS stating that an error had been made, their original refund amount was correct, and they were being charged a fine for not having immediately returned the erronious check even though they never cashed it.  The fine was far more than the overpayment of course.

In another thread, someone mentioned smell that always takes them down model train memory lane.  For me, that's OSB.  Everytime I smell it I'm taken back to those first train set days.  All of my previous layouts were built on OSB, but that first one was simply a sheet of OSB sitting on four milk crates to get it off the floor, and I'm immediately 8 or 9 years old every time I smell OSB.  It's wonderful.

Last thing, I just want to thank everyone we have on the forum, in the diner or otherwise.  I was lurking in an automotive forum this weekend and the behavior of many of the posters was appalling.  Just a bunch of absolute trolls.  I was not here during what is referred to every so often as "those days", so maybe it was the same here once too.  Still, it's not now, and I'm grateful.

Cheers everyone!

Good morning, diners.  It's a frosty 9°F out, so I decided to walk indoors at the college field house.

I'll have bacon, eggs, and black coffee, Brunhilda.

It was good to hear from Ulrich.

Dave, I hadn't seen that set of videos of the guy traveling all over to ride trains.  I wish I had done something like that when I was younger.

I'm starting my taxes today.  I have always done my own taxes, even though my situation has made taxes more and more complicated over the years.  To me, it has always been a fun challenge to wring every last dollar out of taxes.  In all the years, I lost only one battle with the IRS, and that was a case in which I finally gave up and paid an amount, even though I still believe I was right.  It had turned into something that was going to cost me more money to fight it than just to pay it.  Bang Head

I am excited today to start laying some track to run to a diesel shop building.  Not sure yet how it's going to be laid out, so I'll have fun trying different configurations.  I'm reusing a building I had on the older layout.

I bought some plane tickets yesterday for later in the year.  I was kind of taken aback at how the ticket prices had risen over the 12 months.

Have a great day, everyone!

Good Morning Diners.  Flo, can I get a large black coffee, with a side of coffee, and a coffee to go please?  Thank you!

Horrible insomnia Saturday night.  I played in a Euchre tournament (Not serious.  Very laid back, for fun.) Saturday night and that must have been the culprit.  It caught up to me today.  Yeesh!

OldEngineman
Use a "clip grabber"

Thanks for the idea!  Never knew such a thing existed.  Do you know of a decent one that will run on Windows 11?  I found a couple online file converter sites that claim they will convert the protected m4p files to mp3, but it makes me a little leery uploading the file and receiving an email of the converted files.  Seems like a really easy way to let malware onto the computer.  Yes I use a good anti-virus program, but I still subscribe to the idea of not testing it's effectiveness unnecessarily.

Walmart.  When my small town got one everyone (except the small business owners that is) was excited and it was actually a rather nice store.  When my wife and I moved away to college, we didn't understand at first why so many people disliked Walmart.  Then we went into the ones near where we were at college.  Yikes!  By the time we moved home, ours had degraded to match those in the bigger cities.  I still like Walmart.  No, I don't go in there, but the reason I like having a Walmart here is simple.  It keeps the pajama wearing, non-bathing, inconsiderate, unruly customers out of the stores I do go to. Big Smile

Have a good Monday everyone!
