You didn't miss much in the SF game. After the injuries the SF players got frustrated and started taking cheap shots, which cost them dearly in penalties.

I hate to rain on LION's parade, but I don't know if I can manage a whole month worth of Ukraine. Even if it's all pristine photos from the past, just the current mention of the nation creates emotional and attitudinal chaos of all sorts, perhaps in many.
Then again, perhaps Brother Elias made the suggestion tongue-in-cheek.

Cool
No, Actually I was serious. Me thinks it is important to keep the trials and the distress of others in front of us. This war affects everyone in one way or another. We must keep the whole world in our prayers at this time.
My wife's niece is in Ukraine. No idea why. She met, married and had a baby with a Ukrainian during Covid. They could not change her visa from visitor to permanent, she could not get a birth certificate. She lives away from the fighting. At first things weren't different except air raid sirens. Now there are many backouts and it is cold. Food is still plentiful. Internet service was good, now not so much. Her parents sent her one of Elon Musk's satellite receivers so they could keep in touch. IMO they should get her and their grandson out. I could say more but it would trigger my suspension. All of us live in dangerous times.
However I doubt we know much about Ukraine rail system to make it a topic. I would vote for something else.
BroadwayLionMe thinks it is important to keep the trials and the distress of others in front of us, This war affects everyone in one way or another and it may well be the first act in another World War. It looks a lot like Hitler's Invasion of Poland. We all know what came from that. We must keep the whole world in our prayers at this time.
Brother Lion.... While I agree with everything you said, it is very valuable to have someplace to escape from the horrors of many realities. This is one place that provides that haven. My vote would therefore be NO!

Hi Everyone,
Brunhilda, coffee with cream, please.
I think the colorful diesels is a good idea. Also, I believe we did bridges a few months ago, but what about depots. There are a lot of different depots in a wide variety of shapes and sizes from Grand Central Station to tiny flagstops tucked away in the middle of nowhere. That could prove to be interesting.
I would vote to stay out of Ukraine at this time. The tragedy of the whole thing could provoke political rhetoric that could cause trouble for the offender(s). Sorry Lion, I just think the topic would be too controversial.
Today I cut two fingers with a Santoku kitchen knife trying to Dice an onion. It's not the first time I've cut myself with that knife. Just glad my wife wasn't there at the time. The object was to dice the onion and freeze it to use in smaller quantities later. Well, that project is now postponed.

Hi Jim,
A few months ago we bought some high end Japanese kitchen knives. They are really sharp! When I was first getting used to them I managed to knick myself a couple of times and I couldn't even feel the cuts. Whenever we have guests cooking in our kitchen we make a point of telling them how sharp the knives are. Most people are in awe of just how sharp they actually are.
I am still learning how to keep them sharp. I bought a 1000/8000 grit wet stone and it works wonders. The stone has worked well on our old knives too, but it takes a long time to get them sharpened properly.
Cheers!!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Good evening
Man, we used to have this knife sharpener in the fish house that Leo Nesser brought up to us. There was never a better knife sharpener than that one.
You just ran your fillet knife through it eight, twelve times after every use depending how much needed, and then slide it down the honing rod about the same.
Had a good Stone out there too, but really didn't have to use it very often. Sometimes after a big Northern or Musky did a number on my big blade.
My mom used to have me take the knives out of the kitchen and go down and sharpen them all. That thing worked like a champion.
Cleaned a lot of fish and the knife flipped around fast. Had a stainless steel link glove for my left hand. That glove helped get a grip on the rib cage bones, to pull them all out in one swoop.
Sure wish one still had that knife sharpener around here.

Grand Central Station is a POST OFFICE
The trains arrive at Grand Central Terminal
It is a real Terminal. Tacks do not continue beyond this place. It has lots of tracks for laying up trains and even for turning trainss, all under the streets of New York.
Pensylvania Station on the other hand is a station. No trains are laid up or turned here. NJT trains terminate at NYP but the equipment either returns to New Jersey, or moves on to the Sunnyside yards in Queens. Amtrak trains may pass through from Boston to Washington, Or they may terminate here, but again the equipment goes on to Sunnyside. LIRR trains terminate here and most of their tracks cannot access the tunnels to New Jersey. They either return to Long Island right away, or they can move ahead to the Westside Yards which are exclusive to the LIRR.
ROAR
Good evening from the just-got-dark West Coast where it is 0c.
Took my wife to Vancouver for her Dr. app(s) and fixed the kid's stove. Came home and grabbed my bud for our almost Daily scoot through the woodland. Did 7.01km. I came across this woman with two dogs that was completely lost. We were a good 1.5km from the nearest road and she had tears running down her face. I walked her out and got a hug for my effort.
Brother Lion, I think the Ukraine situation is horrible and follow it daily and I have a lifelong friend that went over to be a medic on the front lines. He has been a missionary his whole life, mostly in Africa. He sends video of the horrors daily, stuff they don't show on the news. My wife is also in constant contact with a few friends she has from the dog world over there and has been offering Veterinary advice to those where there are no longer Veterinarians to help. We have two of our kid's Nannies over there in close proximity, one in Slovakia and one in the Czech Republic. We love them dearly and told them if things take a turn for the worst get on a plane and come here. They have a home for as long as they need one.
My Queen is off with her mother who is still in hospital and likely will not come home. I offer to start dinner and she tells me no. She loves to cook and unwind, so I will bow to her wishes and have a wee bit of scotch.
TF, how many fish have you cleaned in your life? I wish I had a dollar for everyone I gutted. You get fast real fast.
I have Gord filling the house with memories and the dogs are chillin.
All the best to all.

"All of the world's problems are the result of the difference between how we think and how the world works."
Gotta tell ewe, one was quite disappointed when him never did give follow-up picture of the blue icicle lights him re-wired. Think ewe promised too.
Saw-em layed out down the long hall but never did get to see after the Young Bucks hung dem up outside. Day always looks better outside.
Certainly bet they were a beautiful sight, but one can only imagine how day looked...
FWIW, I am not at all in favour of taking the Diner to the Ukraine. As Brent suggested, I come here to get away from the horrors of the real world. I fully support the Ukraine and I spend a lot of time every day studying the situation in the Ukraine and in other hot spots around the world. When I am done doing that, I come to the forums.
Track fiddlerGotta tell ya, one was quite disappointed when him never did give follow-up picture of the blue icicle lights him re-wired. Think ewe promised.
Well I did finsh them, but then big snowfalls came and the kids could not even get close enough to the building to hang them up.
Here they are streched out in front of my office...
I started too late in life to be good at butchering fish. My neighbor's son in Maryland did some commercial fishing and she brought me rockfish. I hacked through them and did OK, but I was not slick. I would throw the fish carcasses in the back yard and the buzzards would clean them up in 2 hours.
Speaking of Ukraine and the horrors of war, I worked with a surgeon who came from the Air Force and went back to the Air Force. My colleague in MD kept up with him. He went to Afghanistan.
One of the things they learned in Afghanistan was that the infection rate went down if they kept the OR temperature at 78. That is really HOT for an OR.
The surgeon sent a picture to my friend of "a really bad day." There were blood bags all over the floor of the OR, the case was over. There was one nurse in bra and panties, one in a bikini and a pot bellied surgeon in a Speedo!. I wish he kept that picture.
BATMAN TF, how many fish have you cleaned in your life? I wish I had a dollar for everyone I gutted. You get fast real fast.
Yes, you certainly do get quick Brent, when you do something frequently and long enough. I'd average about 30 seconds for a walleye. Wouldn't have the foggiest notion how many, ALOT of em.
Back then, it was 10 cents for the average ones, 25 cents for the bigger ones and a buck for a large northern or musky. Courtesy resort rate that added up by the end of the week, besides tips. Would have gladly gave them a dollar, not to do the Pike instead. Never did like doing "Y" bones.
Us dock boys had a pact at our end of the lake. We'd all chip in to help whoever still had fish to clean, until all us friends were done. Then we'd head up to the campground to have a few cold ones
We all knew the secret trick. You washed your hands with Colgate toothpaste after soap, if you didn't want to ward off the girls in the campground
Yes, a lot of fish brought up from the docks, but we also had a lot of fun.
Thoughts and best wishes for your mother-in-law.

This has been a fun month for me.
hon30critterA few months ago we bought some high end Japanese kitchen knives. They are really sharp!
We bought a set of kitchen knives made in Switzerland by Victorinox.
These things were so sharp they were scary. It has been a couple of years now, and though they have lost some of the edge, they are still very sharp.
Track fiddlerI'd average about 30 seconds for a walleye.
I believe the nuber of fish I have cleaned in my life is exactly zero.
You don't need to do this. There are places you can go and buy fish already captured, cleaned, and ready for cooking.
I have to agree with those Diners who think that the invasion of Ukraine is not a suitable topic for the Diner.
Me too.
If you want to discuss what is happening in Ukraine, you can go nearly anywhere else on the internet and do that to your satisfaction.
This is the place for electric trains.

Living the dream.
Good morning, diners. I'll have coffee, eggs, coffee, bacon, and then lots of coffee. A church meeting last night that went late is the cause of today filled with coffee.
Days like this make me appreciate retirement so much.

That makes two of us. When younger, my older brothers took me fishing many times. I never got the reason. I didn't enjoy sitting in the heat, getting attacked by bugs, to watch a line in the water. In college, the heat was replaced by freezing cold when I joined some guys in ice fishing. Again, even with the amount of alcohol consumed on the ice, I couldn't see the attraction.
I'll continue to let someone else catch and clean the fish I eat.
I'm sure some of fishing friends would look at me suffering through my layout bridge-building experience, and wonder why I go through it. To each his own.
I know this photo has no connection to model railroading, but I thought it was neat. I guess someone could be tempted to put something like this on their layout!
Have a great Last Day of January!

Good morning
Well, it's not my style to start out the day on a negative note, but posting here is as glitchy as it's always been. Although somewhat used to dealing with that, the frequency of ads from the bottom and right side of the page has increased. They take over the whole screen, making it almost impossible to prepare a post at times.
They pop up as your clicking on the screen, almost like they have some kind of artificial intelligence. They take you off the page you're preparing, diverting you to their ad page. Then when you try to click back, sometimes your whole post is lost and you have to start over.
Its especially irritating when trying to get back to someone, in a timely manner while in a discussion. One may be taking a break from this quite aggravating frustration. I've become quite Fed-up with these over invasive ads that are obviously allowed to be that way.
On a more positive note...

Yep, that's the cool photo you posted around Christmas time Br Elias, and thanks for sharing. Too bad the weather didn't cooperate to hang them outside, but maybe next year
Good afternoon Diners. A mug of Lapsang Souchong tea please, Janie.
Not been around as family visiting. Have to catch up on postings.
Happy wherever the Diner is in February - except Ukraine. My thoughts are with Ukrainian people, but keep it separate from this Forum.

As I have said before... Kalmbach does not sell pop-up ads on the Forums. If you are seeing pop-up ads, this is because at some point in the past you visited some website that surreptitiously installed adware on your computer. Those ads are not coming from the Forum.
