Gidday Chloe, a banana milkshake, please.
With this talk of snow, I’m not sure that I should be mentioning that I picked our first salad greens out of the garden for a salad to go with the roast potatoes and roast lamb leg for tea tonight! Complete with homemade mint sauce, with the mint also from the garden!Dinner

While just not limited to Batman and the other Canadian diners, something to watch with your Sunday morning coffee…

we got our first snow of the season today.

Snowing here today as well, not our first of the season, though. I think I will throw the first fire in the wood stove though. The cats will appreciate that.

Good morning!

I'm not usually up this early, and I certainly haven't started my coffee and taken my morning old man pills.  But today the dishwasher is empty and the cats are fed.  The GF has taken the dog to the kennel, and will be back shortly.  I'll have breakfast ready to start (bacon, eggs and toasted too-healthy fancy English muffins).  Bags are packed.

We're off on the Bourbon Trail!  I'm not sure about the Wifi or how much downtime I'll have, so don't send out the St. Bernards for nine days.  It's 70 degrees here in Delaware, but we've seen forecasts of snow for Kentucky.

I got to thinking that I rather suspect that all service personnel, especially those who made up the “citizern armies”, would be very displeased with the current extreme divisiveness amongst ffolkes who should know better. It wasn’t what they were fighting for!

I sure hope recent events are at least a small sign that things may be returning what would be considered "normal" or at least trying to maintain an even keel.

“Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.”

Gidday Chloe, do I hear the Elizabethan Serenade emanating from the jukebox. After all these years I now know what that music is called!!

I was contemplating a measured response to the comments around the state of the Media, along the lines that bias in the media is historical. However, after viewing Eds photo of Mr. Ambrose and it also being the 11th of the 11th, I got to thinking that I rather suspect that all service personnel, especially those who made up the “citizern armies”, would be very displeased with the current extreme divisiveness amongst ffolkes who should know better. It wasn’t what they were fighting for!

Italy still has a number of classic steam trains in service. Here is an overall view:

https://www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/best-old-fashioned-train-rides-italy

Here are a few of the highlights:

The Sila Railway:

The D'orcia Valley train:

The Ritten Narrow Gauge railway:

The Buggerru's mine train:

You can read about each of these railways here:

I seem to avoid the expressways like it's the plague when I can.  Don't care if it takes longer to get somewhere as I'm not in a hurry anymore.

Rather be traveling like this though!

Good evening

Thanks for sharing Mr B.  Certaily must have been hard times losing your Dad, both of you at such a young age.  We all love the best teachers that had the most impact building integrity and good fundamentals in us.  One of those two teachers was DadSmile

Wising you the best with your corrective eye surgery TC.

Judy always pulls surprises out of her hat like she did after we got back from Fort Snelling today.  She earned a free hotel room at the Bloomington Hilton for excellent work performance.

Not the biggest room we've had but nice.  The funny thing is it's only three blocks from our place.  We could have walked here if it hadn't got so darn cold so fastLaugh

There's a view of the Reserve and the Highland Park Ski Slopes.  They're making snow over there.

The view to the north you can see the city of Minneapolis if you zoom in to the top right.  It's about 11 miles away as you wouldn't be able to see it but we're on the 10th floor.

Have a great night gentlemanWink

Had a follow up with my eye surgeon on Tuesday.  I have had a noticeable decline in the vision in my surgically repaired eye since my last visit in August.  He noted that the graft was healing as it was supposed to, but what was a small cataract in August is now a large cataract.  The pressure in that eye has also increased to the point that I will need to put in drops twice a day.

I still have sutures in the eye that will come out in January; then the eye can be measured and tested in March in preparation for cataract surgery.

I am now in month 15 since the graft failed, and 10 months post op.  I am looking at another 6 months before my eye can be corrected.  That sounds really depressing, but I remind myself every day that modern medicine is able to correct everything that has gone wrong, it just takes time.

Today I always go to the Fort Snelling Sea Of Stones to visit my step Dad that Served as a Marine Sargent.  This year, unfortunately, will be visiting two Dads as I had to say goodbye to my biological Father this year that Served in the Navy.

TF

You're lucky to have been able to know them for so many years as an adult, one man to another.  My own Dad died of cancer when I was only 23.  He served in Africa as a member of the old Army Air Corps in World War 2.

Good Morning,

Remembrance Day here. I'm reading Dad's Flying Log. He was a Bomb Aimer in a Halifax and flew in 77th Squadron based in Full Sutton, Yorkshire.  Not a lot of detail in the log but incidences are noted, such as 'attacked by ME110.  What is surprising is how long each mission was with most at least 6 hours and a few over 8. He was lucky. He told me that once on the flight home the 2 planes flying beside them were shot down but then the German fighter left. He thought it was because they were firing at it. The flight home was dangerous as many let down their guard but they did not. At age 31 he was the oldest officer flying in the Squadron and their pilot was a year younger. Dad was the 'second officer' in the plane as they flew without a co- pilot. Dad was co-pilot for takeoff and landing.

Got a blast of winter last night. A storm came from the south and we got about 6 inches of the white stuff. High today of 25F so it won't be melting and may not until next April. I was out before sunrise shovelling spots for the Juncos. Such devotion to our feathered friends deserves a reward and I will give myself one in the form of another coffee.

Good morning

Today commemorates the Honor and Respect all our Veterans deserve.  Goes without saying 365 days a year 24/7.

Frequently I get invited to the Bloomington VFW for Saturday or Sunday morning brunch.  That Post has an olive drab helicopter from the Korean War parked sideways with the tail rudder over the front door.  There's usually one or more Vets in uniform that I always shake hands with and Thank Them for their Service.

Today I always go to the Fort Snelling Sea Of Stones to visit my step Dad that Served as a Marine Sargent.  This year, unfortunately, will be visiting two Dads as I had to say goodbye to my biological Father this year that Served in the Navy.

It's a fabulous photo, and a fitting tribute.

Thanks Attuvian. read more about Doughboy Joe here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_F._Ambrose

The photo is in the Public Domain through the National Archives.

Joseph Ambrose wore his old Army 'doughboy' uniform and carried his son's flag often to Veterans Day parades and VFW conventions. He confessed that some years he had to go on a crash diet to squeeze back into it. But he did it to honor the veterans of the Korean and the Vietnam wars, wars he believed America was trying then to forget. He wanted to remind us of an important truth: that no matter the outcome of a war, those who answer the call of duty and risk everything to defend America deserve the respect of a grateful nation.
