On the cruises I remember, our lifeboat drills were pretty basic.  We were told when they would be.  Our responsibility was to get our life vests from our cabins and assemble at our lifeboat station.  We were checked off, and that was it.  We were actually familiar with the lifeboats because they were also used to "tender" us from ship to shore in shallow ports where cruise ships couldn't dock.

Our food was also excellent.  Breakfast was the best.  I probably had Eggs Benedict 5 days out of seven.

The smaller ships, maybe 300 or so passengers, are our favorites.  We got to know the crew, and the Captain and senior officers greeted us like old friends on subsequent trips.  We were in one relatively small port one day when a Mouse Boat came in.  Even on land, we soon had enough of the crowds and returned to our own quiet and peaceful ship.

Good afternoon Diners.  Afternoon tea please, Janie.

John.  Our cruise was really great.  The Covid testing before getting to the port was very stressfull.  From then on everything  was wonderful.

Priority boarding because we were 'Princess Club Passengers.  On board before midday.  The lifeboat drill is now simplified.  Watch it on television then go to the lifeboat station to be checked in.  Simple.

Meals were 5 star.   Entertainment fantastic.  A really enjoyable cruise in good weather.

Roll on our next one.

Kevin and Mike.  I hope you are feeling much better.

Waiting for the rain to stop as we want to see a cruise ship that is in our local port.

Daughter, S.I.L.   and two grandchildren are in the sky on their way to New York.   They keep visiting NY.   I hope they keep returning.  Laugh

Lion, what's going on? You've switched from cats to dragons? I prefer cats!

Got tired of eating bird eggs... Went for something more facinating. At least dragons can put up a bit of a fight. And if the Dragon is too big, the lion can simply walk away.

Good morning from a wet and wind-blown NW PA.

Chloe - Bacon and eggs breakfast platter and a OJ please. Thanks.

Kevin & Mike - Hope you both are on the mend.

Weather - Went through two different Tornado Warnings after midnight, one from 1245-115am, then a second 'radar indicated' warned storm from 115-145am, one tornado touched down a few miles south of my place, the other potential one was further south. Watches were issued for the surrounding area from 2-7am.

My place had one limb ripped out of a big maple tree, and a flooded basement. (Glad the train room is upstairs!)

We also had three "Dangerous Thunderstorm Alerts", and I had to look those up, as I had never seen those before. Defenition was those get issued once lightning frequency hits a certain threshold, as high frequency in lightning is a metric that helps them assess how severe a storm is, so something else they can watch for.

My only issue with the warnings - Zero local coverage by local news! NWS alert said area only, and to "tune to local news media" for further details, and local news media did not have further details. They only had a scrolling warning across the top of the screen, never broke in, and radio stations never interupted broadcasts.... Indifferent NBC affiliate stayed on a soccer match, with only a icon with the red polygons in the corner of the screen! ABC & Fox had a scrolling alert across the top of the screen, CBS across the bottom of the screen.

Both NBC and ABC affiliates stated on their website & app to go to Facebook for live weather covereage. Facebook coverage requires a "log-in" first, and I am not a FB member. So they were very helpful... Confused

Fortunately, it was not as bad as it could have been. But still....

Hope all are well, best wishes to those not, and hope all have a good day!

Good morning, diners.  This past week while we were out of town, I didn't get my daily dose -- so I'll have bacon, eggs, and black coffee.

I've said it before, it's nice to get away, and it's nice get home.  We are both completely worn out after babysitting.

It's also nice to use my laptop again.  Trying to read and respond to the forum's posts on my phone is just difficult for me.

Lion, what's going on?  You've switched from cats to dragons?  I prefer cats!

Kevin and Mike, I hope everything is going OK with the you and the virus.  Let us know.

David, I might have missed it if you reported, but I hope your latest cruise went well.

Ray, sad story of your wife's illness.  Even after all these years, I know it is painful to remember.

Ed, like your work with hazadous materials, there are so many things that were done in the past without knowing.  I'm wondering what will be discovered in the future about what we deal with today.

MLC, that's too bad about the job.  I hope it works out -- let us know.

Dave, White Out!  I have some school student stories about White Out that I had to deal with.  Word processors took away a lot of headaches concerning students and White Out!  At one time I seriously considered banning White Out from the school.

Bear, neat old advertisements.

I know I've not mentioned some of you here.  It's taking me a while to read through the posts I've missed the past days.

I hope everyone has a good day today.

An interesting scene from the Oregon and Eureka (California) RR.  This photo's caption said it was taken near Eureka:

Hi Everyone,

I would submit that many of the warning labels we see, especially the obnoxious ones, are there for liability issues.  Folks these days file lawsuits on a whim.  Do you really need a warning that says, "the beverage you are about to enjoy is extremely hot."  A woman sued McDonald's for 4 mil and won after being scalded by their coffee that spilled on her lap.  Her attorneys claimed that she hadn't been warned.  So, hence the warnings.

Less is more,...more or less!

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid, naturally found in milk, including human milk.

The U.S. Food and Nutrition Board's Recommended Dietary Allowances per day for adults is 33 mg/kg body weight.

Good sources of phenylalanine include eggs, chicken, beef, milk, and soybeans.

When a person's body metabolizes certain sweeteners, phenylalanine is produced.

A small group of people have a genetic inability to metabolize phenylalanine.  This small group of people are called Phenylketonurics.

Since some foods contain substances that will produce phenylalanine, the labels carry the wording, "Phenylketonurics:  Contains phenylalanine".

Thanks to Lion, after I looked this up, I now know that phenylalanine is essential for good health, which is more than I knew for the past seventy years.

PHENYLKEYONURICS:  CONTAINS PHENYLALNINE... When was the last time you saw that one!

Yesterday, on the side of a Coke Zero can.

My doctor told me, at the time I was diagnosed with diabetes, that Dr Pepper was about the worst thing I could consume.  Being a Scotsman, I finished the cans I had but never bought another, nor any carbonated soft drink.  And, I discovered that I don't miss it at all.

My wife likes her Sodastream. Tap water with or without ice carbonated by the Sodastream with a squeeze of lemon or lime. It is actually very refreshing and does no harm.

A Slurpee can contain 10 times the maximum amount of sugar you should consume in a day and will so completely overwhelm your liver and pancreas it can take days to get back to normal. In the meantime, all those toxins build up in your body creating even more havoc which will eventually lead to some nasty diseases.

It boggles the mind when I see two guys arguing over what brand or weight of oil they should be putting in their car while pounding back soda pop or a Slurpee.

Did I mention about the eggs for breakfast? I wonder where Hagrid got them from?

Safety and Warning Lables...

Once upon a time it was that anything flamible that you bought in a store had an FDNY number on it. It did not matter if you were in New York, or any place else. Haven't seen these in years upon years. Maybe NY does not require them anymore.

Good morning diners. Flo, decongestant and a couple Tylenol please. Thanks for the well wishes everyone. So far my symptoms haven't been awful. I slept pretty good last night which I'm sure I needed. Coughing a bit more today, but it's productive-moving crud out of my lungs and sinuses. I'm quarantining in our camper, so it certainly could be worse.

Hope Kevin is doing okay.

MLC-sorry about the job situation. That really sucks.

Thanks for the great, vintage posters, Bear!

I hope Kevin and Mike are doing OK. I just read an article in the Washington Post about "Covid Virgins" of which I am one, too. Vaxed and boosted and haven't been infected. Hope it stays that way.

My main underground feeder somehow "opened" and cut power to the three houses at the end of the cul-de-sac. The utility company worked (noisily!) through the night to restore power, digging a 400' trench and burying 4" duct, running new wire and getting everything buttoned up at 3 AM!

You may recall I had some power issues about two weeks ago and related that to the foreman but he, of course, didn't think that was the problem. Still, they couldn't find the break so had to run all new material. I showed him where there was a lightning strike that burned a tree root ball back in '91 and ruined some appliances and fried our meters.

"That wouldn't have anything to do with this", says he. There's still a big crater where the tree root burned away. I thought the lightning may have compromised the jacket and finally, after all these years, corroded the aluminum conductors?

I'd sure like to see what caused the open circuit. I'll never know as the old line was left in the ground.

A gloomy, stormy day here in NE Ohio. This video compliments it well:

I don't understand how those thimble slag cars don't tip over. Wish I had room to devote a slag pit in my mill area.

A big part of warning labels is that if you want to sell your product in international markets you have to comply with many RoHS rules. It is really for the benefit of us all. When I started at GE in '78 we were cutting and sanding asbestos (Transite sheet, pipe lagging), working up to our elbows in 2% Thorium powder, kicking around mercury like it was play sand, brushing cobalt dust off the benches before we ate our lunch, unloading tank cars of HF and HC acids with nothing but safety glasses (sometimes) and there were no company directives as to hazards or personal protection. Even after OSHA it took years to implement safety protocols for Personal Protection Equipment and practices.

Enjoy your Sunday, folks!

Cheers, Ed

Good morning from the stunning West Coast, currently 21c in the sunshine.

Mike, sorry to hear you are sick but at least you are vaccinated, Our ER friends are telling us that every single person with covid in their hospital is unvaccinated. We are having a get-together tonight and our hospital friends have once again removed themselves from social activities due to the virus really ramping up again. They don't want to infect anyone if they have been infected.

Ray, that story of how you lost your wife is tragic. There are no words.

Mark Knopfler is so unique in his guitar playing, there are some good videos on the tube where he sits and talks about his style, along with comments on his talent from various teachers and fellow greats. The seventies and eighties were a time of so many memorable concerts. You would get the extended versions of the top songs at the concerts.

Time to hit the bike. Ray or anyone else that uses a workout monitor, this is what my half hour on the bike looks like.

I was in jelly belly territory on the 17th, I have to ride 5 times a week to stay in the blue and get my 65-year age into the high 40s.

All the best to all.

Yes, reminds me of my working days.  I was a software engineer and worked in a cube farm at a computer, but I had to take a course in Ladder Safety.  Why I'll never know.  We didn't even have high shelves.  And the course had nothing in it about black cats, either.

The higher ups were relentlessly silly about getting in required training, even though they usually had no relevant courses or the courses that might have been useful were only given in some far-flung locale.  I did figure out the solution to the silliness when I was told I had to take a course called Blood Borne Illnesses because the radar I was working on was destined for some remote alien environment.  I was not planning to go with it, but they still said I had to take the course.  So, in a bit of Malicious Compliance, I used their own nonsense against them.  I put all these useless courses in my Training Plan.  Amazing!  They never bothered me again.

Water Level Route

Well diners, I guess I'll be hanging out with Kevin in the hospital car. Had my usual allergy symptoms yesterday, but a sore throat with them. Tested negative. Took another test today. Positive. Pretty sure I know where I picked it up. A gal I had to train at work told me Thursday that her kid has some weird summer sickness. Right. First session I had with her was Tuesday. Three days later and... Makes me so mad. Vaccinated and boosted, so hopefully sometimes stay mild.

Hey, Mike.  I've heard that licking Petosky stones kills the virus.  Of course it opens you up to significant bacterials of about a dozen types.  But at least you'll be the first on your block!

For years my wife worked in a office with a half dozen young women.  They were always coming to work sick or bringing something in from their kids.  Totally unconcerned or others around them.  Could it be at all generational?

Don't be heroic, buddy.

Mornin' folks!

Chemical Safety Warnings......  I guess I will tell you my reason for being in strong favor of them...

I married a wonderful, sweet woman who grew up in a large family.  Seven to be exact.  Five kids and the parents. Three of the seven died of Bone Related Cancers!  My wife died due to ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia) after a bone marrow transplant went bad.  Both my Mother in Law and my Brother in Law died of bone cancers.

My FIL was a member of the Experimental Aircraft assn. and used to recover planes in the basement of their house.  These were cloth covered and the cloth was made hard by using a substance they called "dope".  It was primarily Benzene!  The house used to smell of it most of the time.  Benzene is now known to cause bone related cancers!

I wish that those "Warnings" had been printed on the containers of that crap back then.  He might have not used it in the house....  My family had horrible deaths from the cancers!  I still miss my wife more than anyone can imagine (It has been 35 years!).  I still wish I had spoken up the morning I took her home from the Cleveland Clinic.  She had diarrhea during the night which was a red flag that the Graft vs. Host was going bad. They likely could have turned that around. She wanted to get home and be treated at a closer hospital.  By the time I got her there it was too late!

So....  Yes, I have very strong opinions about the need for those warnings, and wish people would read them and heed them!

OK, Soap box put away!
