There is supposed to be a forum upgrade next year.  Has anyone ever seen a software upgrade go smoothly?  Apple's iphone 12 loses reception, when there is good reception, I hear.

For links to the forum you can either type (url)forum_link(/url) replacing the parethesis with the square brackets.  Or you can cheat and use tinyurl.com links.  I cheat.

Ken Jerry is a piece of work, or as they say down South, Bless his heart.

Upgrade? LaughLaughLaughLaughLaughLaughLaughLaughLaughLaugh  That should go over about as good as a Led Zepplin.

As for Apple products, we had a saying around the IT business..... "Apples are for kids". This is why they make phones now.

However, to be fair, nowadays even the PC is, well.... suffice it to say I dont wanna get banned for language infractions. Im sure im over my allotment for the day.

You cant buy a new board or a whole PC itself without having to have Pirateware Win10 on it. And thats in the hardware now! No way around it.

Even Android phones (which are actually google products) will brick your phone if you update them. Any of them, LG's, Samsungs, etc etc. Im staying at least 5 plus operating systems back from the latest just so my phone will continue to work.

IT used to stand for Information Technology, I really believe its "Idiot Time".

Henry, no need to post a time when the upgrades will happen..... Itll be apparent - ill bet you a pack of Kadees on it!

I made my trek to the liquor store today. The marketing people must have known the Diner was in England this month!

What should jump into my cart but this bottle of Chivas:

Mancherster United. Are they any good? I guess so if they have a commemorative bottle in the USA? Anyway, what's in the bottle is good. I haven't had Chivas in a while and it's going down pretty nicely, football or no football.

Cheers, Ed

Good Evening,

I went back to that PK2 SW that had been giving me problems. I got the decoder to reset and now have prime mover sounds again but it still runs a couple of feet and then stops. A little push and it will start again. I cleaned the wheels again and the track but still the problem. Any ideas?

Ken, maybe you should ask Jerry for his home number so you can give it  to all his customers that have problems.

Ed, that scotch looks good to me. I could use something stronger than wine lately.

I would love to go back to Paris for Christmas again and stay at the same hotel. If you remember the first Bourne movie, they go to a hotel in Paris looking for information. That is the Hotel Regina, the same one we stayed in. It was a very relaxing time and the food was great. We walked many miles up and down the Champs Elysee in the eveing. There were many others doing the same and everyone was in a good mood. It was very safe as there were police on foot just in case. I doubt that will happen again for a long time and by then I'll probably need a walker or zimmer frame now that we are in the U.K.

I'm running the dishwasher and it has to be the noisiest one on the planet. It is a 30 year old Maytag that just won't quit. Hope it doesn't.

Our heat wave continues through the next week with temps around 32F or slightly above on some days. No snow either. I think we will have to pay later.

DAVE, I stopped in at the Post Office armed with three pages of documentation and prepared for a rhubarb! They ran the tracking number and found out the RDC is BACK ON OUR CONTINENT! I hope there are travel stickers all over it showing the ports-of-call the package visited on its six-week holiday!

Hi Ed,

Wow, will wonders never cease?!? Actually, I fully expected that the Australian Post Office would do the right thing. I wonder if there will be postage due? I shouldn't think so.

Your comment about the travel stickers reminds me of my trip to Sweden with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets in 1972. We went through several countries and each time the customs people just waived us through. I had no stamps in my passport showing where I had been. Upon our return to Canada I had to ask the customs officer to stamp my passport just so I could prove to myself that I had actually crossed the border!LaughLaughLaugh

Thanks for the update!

Cheers!!

Nice catch!

Dianne and I like to indulge in the occasional 'Rusty Nail' (scotch and Drambuie) but I wouldn't waste good stuff like that in the mix. I haven't had a 'neat' sip of scotch in years. I'll have to correct that this Christmas!DrinksThumbs Up

Good morning.  We, too, are having a heat wave.  It's 27°F now, but is expected to get into the 50s this afternoon.  The ice on the creek is now thick enough to walk on, but I wouldn't chance it.

Thanks for the England pictures, David.

The island countertop was installed yesterday.  I'm doing some adjusting on the cabinets, and things will be finished.

My wife says this is the last home improvement project she will do.  I can't tell you how many times I've heard that in the past.

There's not much else going on here.  A new granddaughter is due to enter the world sometime in the next two weeks.  We will be quarantining completely so that we can see the baby and mother.

Have a good Saturday, everyone.

Good morning

Thank you for your kind words in your post yesterday Mike.

CNCharlie

TF, do get your eyes checked by an opthamologist if you haven't already done so. It was just by accident that I found out I had glaucoma. I had floaters suddenly so I went to Emergency specializing in eyes as I was afraid I'd torn the retina. Well I hadn't but they sent me right away to the specialist I see now as the pressure was very high. Turns out those puff pressure machines used by optimitrists are crap as they had said the pressure was ok. I could have lost some eyesight otherwise.

Thanks Charlie.  I'm glad Robbie is doing better.

What you mentioned above is a concern if things don't turn around in a reasonable amount of time.  I have a friend named Phil.  He is not only a good friend but was one of my best clients years ago as I remodeled his whole house one room at a time.  He is a retired doctor so we call him Dr. PhilLaugh

It is nice to have a doctor as a friend of the family.  He said the same as you to get my eyes checked to be on the safe side.  For now with exception of the grocery store I like to stay home to be on the safe sideWhistling

I've been having sleep problems lately and he told me this is why my eyes hurt and probably the reason for my migraine headaches that I've never had before.  My reason for minimizing blue light which I already knew wasn't helping before he suggested avoiding it for now.

Have you been known to share a spot of that fine Scotch with an old Scotsman before Ed? Stick out tongueWink  I've been known to rest well after a few of those at night I'll tell youLaugh

The cows Kevin!  Since hearing this I'm thinking of putting a small Corral with one cow next to my ore loader when I get it done.  Once a year they have the Annual Beef Fest for all the ore workersLaugh

Liked the layout pic David.  Some nice modeling.  The rusty old boy to the right that had seen better days but especially the steamer that looks like a bulletYes

Lion!  Good to see you.  I know right where to get that good prime rib in Bismarck.  The Texas Roadhouse I visit every time I'm there to visit my son and grandsonsDinner  They do a great job thereYes

Everyone have a great day

TF

P.S.   I'm happy for you that you finally got those new kitchen counters in John.  I bet they look nice with the new cabinets.

I remember quite a while back as you told us you were away for the day.  Your wife happened to find your Sawzall and decided to open up the wall between the kitchen and the living room.

You came home to the surprise with the conduit and the rest of the guts hanging where the wall used to be realising the work you know had ahead of youLaughWink  Obviously you finally got that all done with the new countertops installed nowYes

Dave, I should have looked at the date but the Postmistress showed me a print-out that indicated the RDC was in the Toronto customs office. They're probably trying to figure out the tariff on a package that visited three countries on two continents. Poor thing is due for an oil change and new brake shoes, at least.

Some entertainment during lunch:

Directed by Clifford Hornby but I don't believe he is related to the Hornby Trains fellow, Frank Hornby?

I hope everyone is well these days —

I'm running the dishwasher and it has to be the noisiest one on the planet.

We had the same issue.  Repairman said it was due to the hard water rattling against the dishes.  He installed a water softener and that took care of the problem.

I cannot tell if that was tounge-in-cheek or not!

I did not realize how loud our 20 year old dishwasher was until we installed our new Bosch dishwasher a couple of years ago... what a difference!

I miss his insights on track geometry and layout planning. His posts are always among my favorites.

With the passing of Brakie, maybe I am getting overly concerned for the people that are absent.

Hey Ed-

I like fish and chips as well. There's nothing like heavy greasy comfort food on a cold winter's day.

But I'm wondering . . . do they serve hush puppies in England? Nothing secret about the recipe: corn meal, egg, and buttermilk batter squished into golf-ball-sized lumps and dumped into the deep fryer with everything else. Yum!

Which reminds me . . . lunch time in the Intermountain West.

Mac and Cheese for lunch here in Nova Scotia's Northern Shore. Not my fav, unless there are lots of tomatoes cooked in with it (which there were sort of) - so OK, but not complaining as we are blessed to have lunch when many aren't able to...

The chap who pretty much loks after our local Arena models N Scale CN. He's looking for a Zebra striped B unit to run with his E3. Not fussy about whether it's E or F, just so long as it stays on the rails. He'd like to run a dummy to keep costs down. So, if any of you N Scalers have, or know of such, would you kindly PM me. Many thanks.

I wish I had tons of progress to report on my layout - but I've been stalled some-what on the landscaping when I ran out of tree armatures (aka weed flower heads) back in the late Spring. Since then there has been a harvest of this year's growth - but that has yet to translate into new trees. Procrastination - I wonder if it's mild depression? I must bite a bullet and slap down some ground cover even if it isn't "perfect", to break the hiatus. The trouble is that I'm doing a sub-division on a section which covers a tunnel. To access the tunnel in case of derailments, stalled locos and so on, the section has to move slide out. It's the joins, and how to deal with them which has me stalled by indecision. On top of that, my trusty old Kodak point and shoot camera has handed in its dinner pail, so I'm having to take photos with the camera on my tablet (which then I have to retrieve and send to myself by email as I haven't yet figured how to do that through Dropbox.) I'll put some pics I've just taken in here if I get it sorted out. I've also been attempting ditch lights, but they are over-bright and I've not yet figured how to tame them, despite the decoder manufacturer's instructions (TCS ASD4)

Seems like it's one photo at a time (it's beena while since I did any of this in the Forum) I'd like to put the sub-division stuff in the next post, but no method I've tried by Reply to this post will post a photo. "Forum Format" links or url from Imgur - makes no difference. PM me a link to the "How to" please some-one. Thanks. I don't know how the first photo posted and no others will!Huh?

The films I have posted are  of all around the North East of England.  Such a wealth of film hardly seen.  Films of railways/railroads  people hardly know of.  A few more to come before I move to another area of films.

David, we used to live in Crawcrook, up the valley from Ryton before emigrating to Canada. Worked for Lee's Bakeries (Wonderloaf) back in the day. (1965-67)  Enjoying "Escape to the country" on our cable feed these days - surprising amount of Steam Railway shown on there!Yeah

Good Afternoon,

Wow, it is getting dark already.

Sure wish we could find out how Johnboy is doing. Haven't heard from him since spring I think.

Der, nice to see you back. Glad to hear things are ok in Pictou.

Fish 'n Chips would be great for supper, assuming we could find some decent ones here. You can find some ok stuff in a few restaurants but no real fish 'n chip shops. When I lived in southern Ontario 50 years ago there were a lot of mom and pop places but it seems most are gone there too. We have good friends here and fish 'n chips are probably their favourite food.

Robbie is doing better every day. Just have to keep him from pulling at those staples. We don't have the elizabethan collar on him as it just gets him distressed but may have to as it is getting tiring monitoring him 24 hours a day. We have been taking shifts. He won't get the staples out until the end of next week or perhaps on the following Monday.

I hope to be able to get down to the layout soon. I want to run that Pacific I bought now that I replaced the problem turnout. It sure is a smooth runner now that it has a can motor. Hard to believe it is 45 years old. I still marvel at the detail on that brass engine.

Talk to you later,

CN Charlie

Good afternoon from the sunny West Coast.

So we are in Jolly old England, the place all my family comes from on all sides. The first batch settled in what would someday become Canada in the 1790s. My Grandmother would always say "back in the old country" and my Dad would always respond "which one".

The first Pup went to its new home today. The last couple of weeks have seen the new owners here testing and going over them for hours on end to decide who gets what dog. All these dogs will be shown and earn their field and obedience titles. Not that any of you care and it doesn't mean anything to me either other than seeing my wife so happy with how they all turned out.

Dave, my wife hurt her back at work once wrestling a German Shepard and in order to keep functioning she got all these special chairs. She had to retire and now I have two of them in the train room and they are real back savers. he first one is a sit/stand chair with adjustable height. I find this one great when working on things.

The second one is also really easy on the back but it is not too useful in the trainroom. You kneel on the lower part and sit on the higher part.

The kitchen cabinets start to go in Monday and then they can come measure for the countertops and they should take a week. I had to run new vent pipes through the attic for the hood fan, went from five to six inches. I am too old for attic work.

Tonight is sushi night, tomorrow is Tai night and Monday is pizza night.Laugh

Lovin the pics and videos being posted, it is nice to sit down and watch when taking a break from the kitchen.

The insurance company has to come and reassess the cost of the floor as it has crossed the $25,000.00 threshold. Nothing to worry about they say, it is just for accounting. Can't say enough good things about the restoration and insurance companies as well as all the contractors. Show up exactly when they say, do excellent work and leave the place spotless.

I will go to Home Depot on the way to get the sushi and will get myself some of that Chivas Scotch as the booze store is right where the sushi place is.Mischief Thanks for the idea Ed.LaughPirate

Cudaken, you are a good man for looking after your neighbours the way you do. Give Jerry theDunce HE double hockey sticks for handing out your phone #. That is totally not on.

Well I have put you to sleep by now I am sure, so TA-TA for now.

Feather in mouth, field training starts early around here.

All the best to all.

Dalwhinnie is my current favorite scotch.

TOP OF THE PAGE, Dalwhnnie for everyone.

I used to drink Laphroig, but I think I sucumbed to peer pressure to drink that. I can't imagine  peat moss in vodka tastes any different.

I was at a party and someone brought a bottle of what they said cost > $100/bottle.  It was better, but I not going to spend that much.

Venison backstrap for dinner.  I should have taken a picture.  It was good.

Working on benchwork.  Before Covid, in Annapolis, Home Depot had a big cart of left over lumber that they had trimmed in the store.  You could find a 4x4 piece of luan plywood for free.  Down here there isn't so much as a half a paint stick.

The cheap 1x4's at Lowes and Home Depot are $6, the clear pine is $9.

I woke up and it was 40.6, it got to 48 and is now 40.8. We might get a dusting of snow on Monday

I live about 3/4 of a mile from an NS line.  I usually hear it between 8 and 9 am.  It is not close, by miles, to a photogenic site.  50 miles north of here there is an elevated section, looks like it was made from ME bents.  I have never seen a train there in my comings and goings.

Luckly Jerry did not die today! I forgot my base ball bat.

At first he denied he gave ou my home phone number and was offended I accused of it!

45 minutes later he said "I remember looking at your name on the contact list". It has my phone number beside my name.

Another hour later. "I think I did give the coustomer your phone number, I will never do it again!"

 What can I say.

Dave, my wife hurt her back at work once wrestling a German Shepard and in order to keep functioning she got all these special chairs.

I tried the kneeling style chair a few years ago and it was instant pain both in my knees and my back. The tall chair looks interesting but I can't sit on anything where my feet and legs aren't fully supported. My sister in law has tall chairs in her kitchen dinette and after about 20 minutes my legs are asleep.

The chairs I have are made by Herman Miller and they are state of the art. I can sit in them literally for hours without any discomfort. This is a newer version of the computer desk chair:

This is the workbench chair that will be used on the layout:
