POST NUMBER

10,000!

Well, I have reached another meaningless milestone in my life, and I did it on a holiday! Now Thanksgiving will even be more special to me.

Another 1,267 posts and I will equal the number of posts I had on Warseer.

I have a bit of strange Turkey news this morning.

I don't know if you guys remember me telling but we've had this turkey that has some sort of mental problems that's been hanging out by the liquor store and gas station for a couple years.

She had become quite the neighborhood mascot.  Apparently she had become somewhat aggressive lately when people don't have food for her which was a bad idea to start feeding her in the first place.

It was on the news the DNR went up there and shot her.  People are upset they didn't capture her and relocate her somewhere else.

We went on a beer run yesterday and low and behold there was a memorial on the corner of balloons and flowers.  Obviously a lot of people really loved that bird.  Judy even knew the bird's name was Penny.

Well,  no more neighborhood turkey mascot anymore I guessSad  I guess this just took place at the beginning of the week.  Don't you think it would have been a little more appropriate if they would have at least waited till after Thanksgiving?  Judy said they gave it to a needy family to eat though.  At least there's somewhat of a happy ending to the story.

The biggest chore is peeling all the potatoes, lots of mashed patatoes.

Hi TF,

You can never have too many mashed potatoes! Traditionally Dianne and I would buy a 10 lb. bag of Yukon Gold potatoes and turn them all into mashed potatoes before Christmas. We used lots of butter, cream, garlic and cheese. Yummy!!

Recently however we have copped out. We are now buying pre-made mashed potatoes made by 'Reser's Main St. Bistro' and they are absolutely delicious!! Instant mashed potatoes used to be pretty vulgar!Ick! These are vastly superior to anything offered in the past. They have tons of real butter, garlic and parmesan, and even though they taste a tiny bit salty, the actual salt content is not that high. No, we are not eating them every day! They are ready in four minutes and one package will do us for two meals. I know that it would be healthier to make mashed potatoes ourselves, but the prepared ones save us both a lot of stress on our backs and other joints.

We haven't given up on using raw potatoes. I just bought a very coarse grater so we can do latkes. It is also great for making zucchini noodles. Stuffed double baked potatoes are a favourite too.

Cheers!!

Dave

I will start cooking around 2:00. It seems silly to make eight different things because it is just my wife and I, but that is what she wants. There will be leftovers for a few days.

Happy Thanksgiving.  It was 25°F walking this morning, but it is supposed to get into the 50s today.

You know what the weather here is like.

Happy Thanksgiving.  It was 25°F walking this morning, but it is supposed to get into the 50s today.

We had the fireplace going yesterday, but the house actually got too hot.  I think we'll save the firewood until our high temperatures are in the teens.  We'll go through more firewood in one week at Christmas with all the kids and grandkids here than we will the rest of the winter.

We were supposed to go to in-laws' house today, but decided yesterday we wouldn't make the trip.

We have a small turkey to bake, and my wife's stufffing is always good.  No pumpkin pie, but I have a basement refrigerator full of beer and a new box of Nutty Buddies to open.  I'm set for the day.

Hope all of you, including those in other places where it's a normal day, have a good healthy day today.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Not a lot of prep this year although we started boiling eggs for the deviled eggs.

The Pavlova looks good Bear.  We're changing up the traditional pumpkin pie.  The plan was cherry turnovers but could not find the dough for the pastry so cherry pie it is.

The biggest chore is peeling all the potatoes, lots of mashed patatoes.  I like the leftovers for potatoe cakes with my eggs for breakfast.

Have a great festive day all

Happy Thanksgiving to all our American friends!!! I hope that you can enjoy yourselves even if your families can't gather in the usual celebratory manner.

If you have too many turkey leftovers, I'll take them!

Cheers!!

Happy Thanksgiving guys!  Just got the first turkey going in the smoker.  Second one going in a roaster oven in a few hours.  Tons of food, but not many here this year.  That's okay.  I like these leftovers! Dinner  Hope everyone has a great day!

Ewwwwww... I remember Olive Loaf. Why was that ever made?

When I saw Ed's pictures of 'proccessed' meats, the olive loaf was the only one that appealed to me!DinnerThumbs Up I haven't had it in years.

It used to be that those low cost/quality processed meats were all that we could afford, but we stopped buying stuff like that years ago. These days we will treat ourselves to a summer salami (the one that comes wrapped in cloth) or a peppercorn salami once in a blue moon. We have a local salami maker that makes excellent products, but they are not cheap.

Head cheese turns my stomach just to look at it!Ick!

Cheers!!

Bear,

Recognize the Kiwi Fruit, the Strawberries, what is the orange ring that looks like ripe Salmon Eggs, or perhaps Frog Eggs,  and what is the cake made out of??

Highly unlikely to be on the Thanksgiving dessert menu is Pavlova, but it could be a good alternative to Pumpkin Pie. (or you could have a helping of both Dinner Whistling)

Yeah, that crap you used to like when you were a Kid Timmy.

The stuff don't cut it today.  I think as we grow older our taste buds get a little wiser for more distinctive foods or something like thatLaugh

It came in a white can with a little red devil on the side. I use to love it as a kid. I tried some about a year ago ......  "BLECHHHHHHHH!!!

Did someone say Little Debbie nutty bars.

It got even worse when we found out there was a generic brand at Aldi that were even better at half the price.

We have a stipulation on those now and I don't care too much for that stipulation.  When they come in the house they're munched up quick so we try to stay away from those now.

Nutty bars indeed.  Oatmeal scotchies with walnuts always beat that one.  Not to much more healthy but way more expensive.

All through high school, I went through the food line and bought a Nutty Buddy.

I cannot have Little Debbie Nutty Buddies in the house.

Those things are amazing, and if I find one in the kitchen... I eat it. No questions about it.

School lunches reminded me --

All through high school, I went through the food line and bought a Nutty Buddy.  Every day.

About two weeks ago, I saw some in the store and decided that after 50 years, I ought to try them again.

I am now up to several of them a day.

My 50th reunion this year was canceled.

Nothing worse then being 9 years old, biting into your ham sandwich, and finding a nasty surprise olive.

Blech!

Do you remember the Hopalong Cassidy TV dinners Ed.

I had a hand-me-down pair of Hopalong Cassidy chaps as a kid. I was a big fan, of course Cool

Don't remember his TV dinners but we would sometimes get Swanson and, of course A&P Honor brand. My dad would eat those Vienna sausages. The tins were wrapped in white paperUnderwood Deviled Ham.

Who would want to eat something with a little madman with a pitchfork on the label?

Yum! Great memories, though. I remember the peanut butter sandwiches in school. They would lather both pieces of bread with a stick of butter, THEN put the peanut butter on.

They sure liked to keep us kids greased up back then!

Happy Turkey Day Everyone Big Smile

Yep!   There it is!

Number 7 on the stack up there with the little yellow green black eye things.

I remember picking those nasty things out of the meat in my sandwich in my school lunch because my mom thought I liked that.  That meat was nasty and they all were nasty.

But after I dissected my lunch and got some kind of nutrition in me, I remember the Mickey's Banana Flip.  That made lunch all worth while and if your mom didn't pack you one of those you were pissed off at lunch time and maybe for the rest of the day.

You can't get a Mickey's Banana Flip anywhere anymoreSad

Yes I remember those oval shaped cans of ham with the twist key.  And that sandwich spread.  I can't quite remember the name of it,  Devil'sworse or something like that.  And those little baby wieners in the jar my grandmother used to give me that I thought were so good.

I guess everything was good when you were young.  I tried those little wieners in the jar not too long ago and it got spit out into the sink and the jar chucked into the circular file.  None of that crap we used to like is good anymoreLaugh

Nope I will never eat canned meat just like I do not like canned laughter but Spam.

I do remember my mom getting some of those canned hams, remember the ones in the egg-shaped tins that you had to use the key to unwind the sealing strip to open them up?

As I remember they tasted pretty good. Any of those other canned meats I have no use for, either. Mrs. P used to buy Hormel Corned Beef Hash and one time I told her to read the "nutrition" label. FAT, saturated fat and that was cooked in still more fat with a quarter pound of salt added.

I have been wanting to try the DCC++ for a long time just never had the time.

I have been messing with Arduinos for a while now to do fun things.

I built a crossing flash / detector unit from an arduino pro mini ( about $3 )

The DCC build was really simple. Not sure how big of a layout this version will run but i can run 2 locos for sure on a 3 ft piece of track.   And the cool thing is that it integrates with JMRI, I can use my phone as a wifi throttle.

I have an NCE procab but this works better, I have better motor control.

Potted meat anyone? No one wants to try goat but they'll eat head cheese or Spam?

Cheers, Ed

Hi Ed

Nope I will never eat canned meat just like I do not like canned laughter but Spam.

That one made me laugh.  All the time after we moved to the Wilderness of Northern Minnesota and I went to school in the small town of Orr.  Anytime someone didn't like what you said or disagreed with you they would say "Eat Spam".

I never did like Spam.  I wouldn't touch it with a 39 and a half foot pole.  Why not just fry some ham?

Cheese's on the other hand.  There has never been a cheese that I did not like except for Head or Limburger cheese.  If something doesn't smell or sound good, I do not eat it.

George Carlin had a bit about head cheese that was funny.

So far no one has mentioned horse meat. When I first moved out to the "country" here, I strolled the aisles of the small grocery store and came upon several brands and sizes of horse meat.

I haven't tried it personally but at one time I know it was popular. On certain days an outfir would set up a mobile canning operation and the Amish could bring their meats in to be canned.

Pork Brains in Milk Gravy anyone? Man, I'm gettin' the munchies! On special at the Wal•Mart!

Mrs. and I will be having a slab of ribs Dinner tomorrow. We had our turkey a few weeks ago. We eat turkey once or twice a month. In the summer I'll quarter and smoke a whole turkey. Shop around and we can find it for less than a dollar a pound. The bones and carkass goes into the soup pot. Chickens get the rest.

Good Afternoon,

I've never eaten goat and doubt I would. I like lamb but my wife doesn't. I grew up eating it but my wife didn't so maybe it is an acquired taste. My Dad's favourite meat was lamb chops with mint sauce. I don't care for game meat.

I have all of the replacement track installed. Now I have to fix up the scenery. My only concern is the slope of the transition is steeper.  Iran a train over the new turnout and all is fine on the mainline.

MLC congrats for learning Arduino.  Somehow I can't bring myself to try.

Goat, I had an earthy crunchy resident who raised goats.  I remember it as a dark meat, a little on the tough side.  I hunt and eat what I kill but I don't know that I could raise and butcher my own animals.

My mother's side was from Croatia and a whole lamb, roasted on a spit, over a fire was a big deal.  Small communities in Western PA put on Lamb Roasts.  I really like lamb, I don't understand why some people hate it.

I have also had caribou, moose, elk, deer, bear and antelope.  I would pass on bear.  None of them taste gamey to me, but I know people who claim that deer taste different from different areas in the country.
