Good Morning,

Happy Thanksgiving to all south of the border. Sounds like most of you are having a quiet dinner but that is probably just as well in the circumstances.

I too like potatoes but don't really eat them much. They sure have become expensive this year. I bought some russets for baking and they were nearly a dollar each even though they are grown here in Manitoba.

At the rate I post it will take me another 10 years or more to reach that milestone even though I have been posting for 13 years now. Keep up the good work though as I do enjoy the posts.

Another grocery pick-up today. I haven't been in a grocery store since last March. We order on line and pick-up at the store. It really is a slick system.

Time for more coffee.

CN Charlie

Hello all,

I haven't had time to read the forum for the last couple of weeks owing to my mother's passing.  It has been a real treat getting caught up.  As John (York 1) recently observed, this is a wonderful thread and I wanted to thank all of the regular contributers who help make it so.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Oh oh! I just heard a shout from the war department.  Judy just yelled it's noon, crack a beer and get in the kitchen.

I'll pop in later.

Tim, I am very sorry for your loss

Well that was impeccable timing.  Judy called me into the kitchen at 5 minutes to 12, just then my buddy Erv texted me and said KQRS ,Alice's Restaurant at noon.  A beer was cracked with the radio put on in the food prep began.

Haven't heard that long song for years and by the time the 20 minutes song was over our prep was done.

I guess there's one plus to Thanksgiving in the pandemic.  Only cooking for two, the prep was lickety splitYes

Now I'm watching the ball game with my ice cold beerBow   Life is GoodYes

That brings back memories.   Everybody on my college dorm floor had a copy.  I haven't heard that since then.  Late 1960s?

Well, Thanksgiving kind of starts the Christmas Season, so let me get a spiced eggnog for everyone on my tab.

For some reason, I don't like eggnog.  I'll have a Bloody Mary or two instead.

Alice's Restaurant.  That first came out when I was in college.  I know I had an LP of it, and there's probably a CD upstairs now.  It was traditional to listen every Thanksgiving.

Ever been to the town of Stockbridge, Massachusetts?  It's a real place, and I've even driven past that restaurant.  Norman Rockwell is from there, and his art museum is there.  He used local people as models for his famous works, and you can still recognize some of their descendents just walking through town.  Tanglewood Music Festival is there.  The open-air Shakespeare plays have moved indoors, but they used to be very special.  There's even a scenic railway nearby.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for another great video! I thought the music score was a bit too dramatic but the cinematography was excellent.

Cheers!!

Good Evening,

Not quite supper time here but soon.

I was looking at old cars for sale ads in Canada and came across a nice '55 Monarch 2dr. H.T. right here in Winnipeg at a good price. A Monarch is a Canadian built Mercury with different grille and side chrome. Wish I had a very large garage and a lot of money to fund a car collection.

Have a good evening,

We really enjoyed listening to Alice's Restaurant as we didn't last year.

Well, ...Everything was going great until my brother called.

I love my brother and talked to him for about 2 hours.  This Corona crap is really unsettling and I wish I could have had him over for Thanksgiving dinner.

After I talked to him for two hours Judy got on the phone with him and I told her the turkey's done the turkey is done.

I did the only sensible thing and shut off the stove but after about two hours of her talking to my brother, even though the turkey was cooked upside down it came out of the oven drySad

Like I said before it's all about the togetherness.  We did the best we could do this year and I don't regret anything.

The turkey was dry but the gravy kind of made up for things.  It was really great talking to my brother even though he could'nt be with us.

Although he kind of was and I will take dry turkey and some time well spent with my brother over dry turkey any day.

We did not nail it this year with the main courseLaugh  But then again we're used to a big family get-together with an 18 - 20 lb bird.  A five and a half pound bird.  I probably could have took an Ohio Blue-Tip wooden farmers match and held it under the bird for about 15 minutes and it probably would have been doneLaugh

today I had to have my cat put to sleep.

Hi Jeremy,

Sorry for your loss. Pets have a really annoying habit of getting inside our hearts, but what else are they there for but to add enjoyment to our lives? Obviously your cat lived a happy life, and I'm sure she would want you to continue to do the same.

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your cat, Jeremy. We had to do the same thing about a month ago. It is heartbreaking but it is equally sad to see a pet suffer, too. Seventeen years is a pretty good run. Our oldest cat, Whoopee, is fourteen. I remember and dearly miss all the pets we've had over the years. Still, our lives have been more than enriched by their companionship.

Your donation will be a great act of kindness in memory of your cat.

I hope everyone is doing well tonight. Sure feels like a Sunday to me — even being retired Smile

This isn't good that someone lost another pet.

I am sorry for your loss Jeremy.  That's my son's name, Jeremy.

It's my experience, the loss of a pet is just like losing a family member and sometimes even harder

It took me three years to get over the loss of my Nellie and I still ain't over her yet.

I have dreams at night that she is still there and wake up looking for her half asleep.

I took Nellie everywhere I went from when she was a little puppy.  Work, the grocery store, wherever.

She still comes to me in the night in my dreams and I feel like I had a conversation with her the next morning.

A loss of a pet has a really tough road to follow.

I am sorry for your loss of your pet Jeremy.  Those ones are really hard

...what is the orange ring that looks like ripe Salmon Eggs, or perhaps Frog Eggs,  and what is the cake made out of??

Gidday Jan, the orange stuff is fresh passionfruit pulp, and the recipe is from the iconic Kiwi cookbook, The Edmonds Cookery Book, first published in 1908. My only attempt to make one was a failure, though strangely, my Mum who was a very good cook, didn’t have much success either. My Grandmas were YUM, but then so were her duck egg chocolate cakes!!! DinnerDinner
pAVLOVA

INGREDIENTS
  • 6 egg whites
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 cups Chelsea caster sugar
  • 1½ tsp vinegar
  • 1½ tsp vanilla essence
  • 1½ tsp Edmonds Fielder’s cornflour
  • whipped cream and fresh fruit
METHOD
1. Preheat oven to 150˚C. Line a baking tray with baking paper and draw a 20cm circle on the baking paper. Turn over the baking paper so that the pencil line doesn’t transfer to your pavlova.
2. Using an electric mixer, beat the egg whites with the salt until stiff, then add the sugar very gradually while still beating. Keep beating for 5 minutes to dissolve the sugar.
3. Slow the beater speed and add the vinegar, vanilla and cornflour.
4. Pile the meringue in the centre of the circle and use a spatula to spread it out to the edge of the circle keeping it as round and even as possible. Make a slight dip in the top.
5. Bake for 45 minutes, then leave to cool in the oven overnight.

6. Using two spatulas, lift it carefully onto a serving plate and fill the central depression with whipped cream and fresh fruit.
Smile

Christmas music season is here.

Let it rock... Dee Snyder style!

As I said in a previous post, the great thing about Christmas Music is it really lets you compare one band to another. This version of White Christmas really proves that Dee Snyder can sing, and that Twisted Sister is a very capable band.

Rock on...

39 years later

The creosote soaked ties aren't there to walk on anymore.  The growth of the trees on the sides took over not to allow the bright sunshiny day of our childhood to still shine in

But the step down from The Trestle to the lower track is still there

Even though it was deleted by the railroad because they didn't need it anymore

Jeremy,

Condolences on the loss of your friend---it does leave a deep hole.

Bear,

Thank you for the receipe, I will be trying this---will substitute cranberry cooked with maple syrup and honey with orange zest for the passion fruit pulp.

Lost another boat in the gale the other night, 82 foot dragger, hit by a queer sea and sunk, all hands gone. They had been having trouble with the diesel return lines not working properly, returning the fuel to one tank only, throwing the stability of the boat off, and reportedly had hailed a large catch of pollock, the added weight would throw the stability off. One of my young friends came by to wish me a bird day, and said that he had seen them off in Portland at the start of their trip, sad times--four more names on the memorial.
