The latest was that two years ago, when she and her husband filed their income tax return, the IRS informed them they had already filed and received their refund.  Someone had filed in her name and SSN.

John: My wife's identity was compromised a few years ago. Now we need to file our IRS tax retruns in person with ID. A return filed any other way will not be accepted by the IRS for my wife's SSN.

My wife set this up with the IRS. It is kind of a pain, but twice already other people have filed returns using her SSN. It has not effected us.

We had bacon and potato perogies tonight and they were delicious! <SNIP> I sauteed them in 1/4 lb. of butter.

My wife and her sisters used to make pierogies once a year. They used roast beef, potatoes, and cheddar. All pan fried in butter... YUMMY.

We have not done that in a few years.

I don't know if I can be of any help, but from what you're describing it sounds like you may need to go higher end to get a color match.

That is what I am trying... I found a company called Questech that maked quartz soap dishes and corner shelves. I emailed them about my problems, and they assured me their products are white. We will see.

Lots of whacky things going on in the Diner these days! Mostly the weather. I hope everyone perseveres and comes out healthy and OK. Knock on railroad ties, I have so far avoided any kind of scams other than sending a $550 check to a guy in Wisconsin for a resin model of the Edmund Fitzgerald that never showed up Super Angry

Pierogis are one of my favorites, Dave Dinner usually with browned onion but that sprinkle of bacon sure sounds good.

Ken, your letter arrived today GeekedYes.

I'll be enjoying a cocktail in the lounge car before moving on to the Diner. Great conversation in here and the bartender is very generous Big Smile

That's good to know.  I'll tell her that.  It's possible she already knows that, but if not, it would help.  Thanks!

I have lost more to fellow hobbiests in incompleted transactions than to any scammer.

I have no way of knowing if any of these was a scam, but I doubt it. I think people have reasons I may never know why things did not get sent.

Now this General Contractor that is supposed to be installing my lanai door, that is another issue altogether. I am afraid that I will need to get Legal Pete involved.

That's too bad Kevin. Very frustrating when that happens. So far (touch wood!) we have had pretty good luck with our contractors. There have been a few issues but nothing serious.

We will be put to the test in a few weeks. We are having a new front door system and a new patio door installed. We have gone with a supplier that has an 88% 'five out of five' rating so I'm not too worried. Considering the price, they should be perfect!

Wish us luck!

I ordered this new Chef's Knife from Amazon, and it showed up today.

All I will say is... WOW! I don't think I ever had a knife this sharp before.

I spent the day getting my computer back together.  It's been apart for months, and I never got the computer desk fully assembled either, as it was missing a few parts.  Well, the parts were found along with the camera and bike shoes.  Talk about a junk drawer with such a variety of stuff.

So, I am typing on my real computer for the first time in months.  I can visit my photo site and post photos again!

The GF got a call this morning to assist with a deceased dolphin that washed ashore.  For a dead dolphin, he sure was elusive, as he washed back out.  She came home, only to be called out again.  They never found the dolphin, but did get a couple of sea turtles going again.

Here are a few more pictures of railroading in New Mexico.

Good old back breaking railroad work! This shot could be anywhere. Check out the condition of the flat car's planks:

More good old fashioned hard work. Logging in New Mexico:

Aren't these guys nice and fresh! I wonder how long that will last. They are destined for a New Mexico mining operation:

1905 picture of the Alvarado, NM railway station. Looks like a pretty big operation:

Oil tankers as far as the eye can see on the Texas New Mexico railroad. Check out the condition of the ties on the left track!:

Lots of front end power:

Amazing landscape:

More New Mexico logging railroad pictures. How did they manage to move those huge logs?

Okay all you power hungry railroaders! Do I count six engines in the lead? Too bad this wasn't a video!

What the heck is that??

Logan, New Mexico. Look at the grade on the far approach to the left hand trestle!

More later,

Cheers!!

Good morning

First of all,  Bill welcome to the forum, good to have you aboard.

Bear,  Thanks for all the pictures, ...Enjoyed

I've been a little boring lately.  It seems all I've been doing is talking about the weather.  Not much to talk about lately as our frequent getaways haven't been very prevalent these days.

I talked to my daughter yesterday and she did make me laugh.  She was too young to remember at the time but I told her about it when she got older.  When she was still a baby in her car seat learning her first few words she had Mama and Dada down.  The third word she spoke was horrifying.

I was young back then too and a little bit cocky I may add.  When driving and somebody cut me off I would use the king swear word which I suppose is justifiable when somebody pisses you off on the road.

This (Trucker) cut me off and darn near took off my front end.  I laid on the horn and said the King Daddy swear word.  In fact quite frequently when someone cut me off I would say the word.

It didn't surface for a while. Christmas that year one of my daughter's Christmas presents was a little steering wheel a shift lever and the little rubber beep beep horn.  Immediately she started steering the wheel back and forth, she beeped the little rubber horn and said that king daddy swear word.  It was the third or fourth word she had learned.  All we could do was laugh but it really wasn't funny.

For weeks that followed she blurted out the same thing.  When company came over it was a little embarrassing but I have to say they laughed too.  Thank goodness this thing eventually faded away but we didn't go to church for a while.

I learned a lesson.  You really have to be careful what you say in front of your kids when they're little growing up.  We can all laugh about it now.  In fact, I guess it's become a fond memory.  My daughter and I were laughing about it yesterday.

Make it a great day guys

Has anyone had someone attempt to scam them recently?

I advertized some car parts for sale on the internet and I got an e-mail saying that they wanted to buy the parts. Great!! Or so I thought. The asking price was $300.00.

The buyer then proceeded to explain to me that they were going to send me a bank draft for $2400.00, and I was to deposit the $2400.00, withdraw the money, take my $300.00, and then give the rest to the "Transporter" who would pick the parts up. During the whole affair, the 'buyer' insisted on the utmost urgency in depositing the bank draft, getting the cash, and arranging for the pickup. By the way, their English language skills were severely lacking.

Lastspikemike

hon30critter
Lastspikemike
Just so you know, there would not ever be any attempt to pick anything up.  These guys wil go far enough to send you the bogus cheque

Hi Lastspikemike,

So how will they try to collect the money?

Dave

I think it best if I do not explain on a publicly accessible website how these scams actually work.

There really is no mystery to all of this. Were Dave to act and deposit the bank draft at his local bank and withdraw $2,400, the bank would put a hold against $2,400 in his account until the draft cleared. When it didn't clear, Dave's account would be charged the $2,400 as an overdraft.

Meanwhile, Dave would keep his $300 "sales proceeds" while the remaining $2,100 would have been delivered to the "Transporter". So, Dave would have been scammed out of $2,100.

The only remaining issue is whether the "Transporter" would show up at Dave's door to collect the $2,100. There are three possibilities here. One, the scammer would risk arrest by showing up himself. Two, the scammer could pay someone else to act as Transporter. Three, the scammer would try to presuade Dave to forward the $2,100 in some form or fashion.

The reason that the "buyer" insists on the utmost urgency to complete the transaction is that Dave's bank will notify him of the overdraft as soon as the draft fails to clear the banking system. So, the scammer needs to receive the $2,100 as quickly as possible.

Good morning.

Thanks for all the pictures of New Mexico.

Helped my daughter's family move from one house to another.  Had to drive several hundred miles through the rain.  Kind of tense driving.  I was glad to get home last night.

After carrying boxes up and down stairs, I will probably just sit around today.  My excuse is that I'm old.

Have a good day, everyone.

Scams indeed

We are all full up here.  Being that I have a registered business on the internet, daily phone calls and even crap in the mail is all too frequent.

My most common one is supposedly I'm getting a message from Google that my business listing needs attention.  Just like my many calls from the supposedly IRS, Google never calls you.  And the funny thing about those stupid IRS scammers is I don't owe the IRS a penny.

I even have a constant Google scam every time I'm on the Forum here.  It's rather Troublesome and annoying.  I even getting knocked off my postings and have to start all over again from these things.  It's a Google ad that I am the one billionth poster on Google and click here to collect your big screen TV.  Yeah I'm going to click on to that button,  Pick me Pick meStick out tongueConfused

I have a sharp knife Kevin.  It isn't honed very well but model railroad enthusiasts say it's a very sharp knife.

I love Shays.  I found this knife at the Casey Jones Railroad Museum in Tennessee a few years ago.

If you carve a thick stick with this knife long enough, your hand may get a little sore as this Shay will leave an impression on youLaugh

THE TAIL OF THE STEAM CAT!

I have soft shoes, and can walk quietly on the new hardwood fllors. Ms. Callista on the otter hand (otters always have two hands) has 20 claws to grip (or slide) on the wood fllor.

She follows me and sounds like a steam engine go the get-go. I walk faster and she builds put steam, wi little paws clickyt clack faster and faster, then she holws like a train approaching the grade crossing. (This is not a quiet cat--indeed they named a state after her--"Yellow Noise".)

Her tail goes up like a plume of smoke from the boiler-stack

Ah, but she doesnt corner so well on the wooden floor. Claws and slick wood havevery little adhesion.

Anyway... That is the tail of the steam cat.

Good morning ....

I'll have coffee and a pecan roll, please.

Dave ...... Thanks for all of the NM railroad photos. I think each one has a story to it, and I wonder about that.

Ed ...... I like your picture inside the SP lounge car. It reminds me of train travel when I was a kid. Before Amtrak. I wish I could turn back time and ride those trains again.

Lion ..... I like your steam cat story.

Regarding sharp knives. ..... I'll just say: Never a dull moment.

Everybody ...... Happy model railroading.

Post Hog

You know the old saying "slap a gift horse in the mouth" was rekindled in my mind this morning.  We are at the very tail end of getting rid of our storage facility finally.

A perfectly good gently used Maytag washer and dryer is in the very back and we are trying to donate it so it can benefit a needy family.

The difficulty of forms to fill out on the internet and jumping through hoops has got me to the point where I'm just ready to take it to the city landfill and pay you to get rid of it and is probably what I'm going to end up doing now.

The washer and dryer looks darn near brand new and worked perfectly before it was put in a climate controlled storage facility, ...What a shame.  She's a barn burner!

Hi Everyone,

I enjoy seeing some of those album covers with trains on them.  Brings back some memories.

Here, just for fun, is the Yardbirds.  This was whenJeff Beck was playing lead and possibly Jimmy Page playing bass.  I think that by this time Samwell-Smith had gone to producing, but it was either him or Page.  Long enough ago that I kinda forgot.  Too bad I couldnt find the scene in the movie "Blow Up" where they play this song.

Yes, I know, Aerosmith covered this song, but I just prefer this version.

Enjoy!

Good Morning,

Well I've been away for awhile thanks to my internet 'provider'. Our service stopped on Aug. 27 and we just got it back on Tuesday. We had 5 service calls out. The problem was a short in the underground wiring that took days to fix and then more problems, not sure what but I spent hours on the phone with  them, trying to hook up a new modem, then that didn't work. Magically it all was resolved. In the meantime I had a new modem sent out from our TV provider that operates on a different system. I just got it and have yet to set it up. No instructions came in the box as you are supposed to do it on your smart phone with an app. We don't have a smart phone so I'll be back on the real phone again today. They also didn't sent the co-ax splitter I requested. Talk about frustration.

Sad to hear about Ulrich's eyesight. I have glaucoma but it was diagnosed early so it is under control. I have a fear of losing sight too.

I picked up the CP Hudson from my brass guru last night. He lubed it, repaired a handrail, changed the lights to LED and installed a motion decoder all for $80. He did confirm this engine was the last run from Van Hobbies from the late '90s. He said that even though I paid a lot, it was a fair price and that I won't lose anything on it. It  is in the 'premium' brass category. I dropped off the J4e Pacific. I may put sound in this one if it runs ok. It is a small Pacific and it will run on my sharp curves just fine. The real one had 69" drivers.

Not much else is new here. We had frost a couple of nights ago. We covered the flowers and good thing we did as a few that weren't are no more.

Perogies are a food that I had never had until an adult even though they are very popular in my city. We have a large Polish and Ukrainian population. My wife's grandmother was Polish and made the best ones I have ever tasted. My wife was raised on them and she shudders when someone talks about cooking them by boiling. Her family cooked them in a skillet with butter and onions.

Kevin, nice knife. I'm not a chef, nor do I play one on TV but my wife is a very good cook and got her knife skills working as a volunteer in the kitchen of a French chef. She has a Mac knife. They are Japanese and probably have never heard the song.

We are overrun with Pine Siskins. Often we have 300 in our backyard. They may be small but they are eating machines. Hope they move on soon as it is costing a fortune in bird seed.

Well time to check the feeders. I'm sure some are empty.

When I started the garage remodel, we had a washer and dryer that were in perfectly serviceable like-new condition. We knew that we were buying new, so we tried to donate them to Habitat For Humanity.

I feel your pain. It was such a process that I just put them out by the curb with a cardboard "FREE" sign on them.

I guy drove buy in a pickup/trailer full of scrap metal and loaded them up. He might have gotten $20.00 for them.

What a waste.

I chose that knife because it was the best reviewed knife that was 100% dishwasher safe. I know there are better knives, but I am not up to having a knife-care regimen added to my chores.

The price was reasonable too. So far I am quite happy with it.

I have owned a couple of Victorinox pocket knives, and they were top quality.
