And I do think they could have made a much more attractive looking tunnel before the Boom

I do remember viewing tunnels in my younger days that were much more attractive than thatLaugh

Good Morning!

Just stopping by to say hello. The lockdown has been lifted slightly, but we are still unable to pursue our plans of going for a house hunt in Denmark. Meanwhile another of the objects we intended to take a look at has been sold, leaving us with just one option. Properties fitting our requirements in terms of location, layout and quality are hard to find. I am scanning the market on a daily basis, but no new chance has come up.

Stay safe.

Happy times!

How about the Grand Trunk Railway (GT)? It was chartered in 1852 to run between Montreal, Quebec and Toronto Ontario. The charter was soon extended east to Portland, Maine and west to Sarnia, Ontario, and by the 1860s the GT served not only Ontario and Quebec, but also Connecticut, Maine, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. Eventually its subsidiary the Grand Trunk Pacific served northwestern Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Another subsidiary, the Grand Trunk Western, operated in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. The Central Vermont Railway was also an offshoot of the Grand Trunk. Eventually the Grand Trunk was incorporated into the Canadian National Railway.

Here is a map of the GT's operations in Ontario, Quebec and the northeastern USA:

This is my most favourite steam locomotive of all. I love how shiny it is!

Here is my long running attempt to make somewhat reasonable copy of it:

I'll see what esle I can find regarding Ontario's railways. Everyone is invited to join in!

I was fortunate that my dad would take me with him to several of the CN and GTW excursions that were frequent in the 1960s.

This one was from Sarnia to Stratford and returning by a different route.

Great stuff! Some of the footage around Stratford was later used in a documentary about the Stratford Shops.

Today, 6167 is stuffed and mounted — like so much of the late, great CN steam — outside the depot in Guelph, Ontario.

Cheers, Ed

Good morning.  I was just finishing the morning walk when the rain started.

Keep the faith, Ulrich.  Something may fall into your life that will be better than the ones that are off the market.

I got some concrete poured late yesterday.  I just finished when darkness hit.  I covered it with plastic, knowing rain was possible.  Tomorrow I'll take the forms off.

Mike, your picture of the chili dog hit the spot.  I'm going to make some tonight.  I agree with Garry, the chili dog was much better than anything with bananas.

Have a good day today.

Good morning

A beautiful sunny day to wake up to this morning.  It looks like it's going to be another great day.

Yesterday was one of those days where everything went right and was just the opposite of last Saturday when everything went wrong.  My cracked ribs are feeling better and I'm relieved they must not have been injured as bad as the last time that happened.

I have a decent floor job to bid today and I know I'll have to get a kid to crawl around on the floor while I cut the pieces.  My bum knee don't take that sort of thing anymore.  I'm hopeful as I could use a job like that right now.

Ulrich,  it was good to see you stop by.  Good to hear some restrictions are being lifted.  Things will get better for you and Petra soon, I just know it.

My daughters and I are going to get together for a picnic soon for one of their birthdays.  I'm looking forward to that day as it will be good to see them.

I wish I had some Ontario pictures to post.  Hopefully I can come across something.

Have a great day everyoneSmile, Wink & Grin

13th street in Gainesville, You MUST have eaten at Leonardo's!

I graduated from Cape Coral High School in 1985, and was accepted to the University of Florida. I wanted to go back to Gainesville so badly.

We could have been there at the same time if things would have been just a little different!

Oh, yeah. LOVED Leonardo's. They sold a rectangular slice packaged between two Styrofoam meat trays with a rubber band around them, and it was so thick the top and bottom wouldn't close all the way. Dinner Two slices was a full meal.

I was also a fan of Gumby's Pizza. Their advantage over Leonardo's was they delivered, and they had those flavored crusts.

I was at UF from 1983-1987, so if you didn't delay going there after high school, we probably did overlap a couple of years. I was in Murphree C from 1983-1985, and North Hall Co-op after that.

Deep dish pizza for everyone!

Aside from the fact, that Germany´s border will not likely be opened before mid of June, our plans to move to Denmark received a deadly blow today. Despite being a member state of the EU, which is supposed to give equal rights to all citizens of the EU, Denmark has imposed restrictions for non-Danish citizen to buy property. These restrictions have been not really been enforced - until recently! Now buying property is more or less impossible. I still will give it  atry by sending an application to grant approval to the concerned authorities, but a positive outcome would require a miracle. I need new ideas to solve our problem, but I don´t have any.

Rats!

Ulrich, perhaps you can rent for a while, establish Danish residency, then buy a house.

Steven Otte

Ulrich, perhaps you can rent for a while, establish Danish residency, then buy a house.

Thanks for that hint,  Steven! I looked into this a while ago. The Danish real estate market has very few places to rent outside the big cities, as house prices are very low in rural areas. OTOH, rents in the urban areas are really high, even higher than in Germany. The paradox thing is, we can afford to buy a small house, but not to rent one.

If it were up to me alone to decide, I´d go even further north. You can by a decent cottage in good order on a small plot of land (something like 20 acres) for as little as $25k.

Happy times!

Good morning from the left side where it is sunny and should hit the mid twenties today.

Think I'll have some of that Pizza Steven, thank you so much. BP was 104/62HR46 this morning before I burned 1400 calories on the bike and went for a quick mile afterwards to cool down. Our rural streets were layed out at 8 per mile before we switched to metric so it is easy to tell how far I run.

TF, you mentioned Diet, not a big fan of diet stuff. The chemical soup in some of these diet products is disgusting. The wife will not let anything with aspartame into the house.

Afternoon folks....

BATMAN
Yep food addiction is treated like any other addiction these days. Obesity cost corporations gazillions in health care and lost productivity.

I think you are right with that....  NYS was asking questions like that 40 years ago when my wife applied for unemployment when we first arrived in Geneva.  They said the reason had to do with finding job openings that would be a better fit for people.  Someone who is 5' 3" and wieighs in at 340lbs. might not be a good fit to work in a warehouse climbing ladders all day....  And employers like to not have their costs made higher because an employee has an accident, etc.  Risk assesment and management is important to employers.

I have just purchased t-track roof mounted racks for my Tesla.  Found out my lady friend is also into mountain biking (at 76 years of age).  I mentioned that I used to like riding bikes back when and her answer was that If I knew how back then, I would still know how now!   So.....  Any advise on a low end bicycle that can be used on roads and paths???  The retired Athletic Director across the street from me does mountain biking and I am waiting for him to chime in with advise.

I just measured my HO Inglenook switching layout and it will fit in the back of the Tesla easily...

Have a good one and STAY SAFE!

Ray, I am still riding a Cannondale mountain bike I got 30 years ago.  It's a no-frills bike, no shock absorbers or spring seat, but I don't do the kind of aggressive trail riding that would make those important.

I got this bike when we visited Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor in Maine.  It was Labor Day weekend.  I had brought my road bike and intended to ride that, but the interesting trails are really only good for mountain biking.  I looked into rentals, and discovered that the rental shops all shut down after that weekend, and they would sell their existing bikes and buy new ones in the spring.

This was a very good bike, used sporadically for one summer and impeccably maintained, and I got it for half the going price.  You might look for end of the season rental sales.

Thanks....  I do want to ride it this summer, "God willing and the creek don't rise".  There is a shop here in Geneva that might just have a used bike that would fit the bill!

Howdy ...

Steve O .... Thanks for the Pizza. Yummy!

Ulrich .... Continued best wishes for you and Petra.

Dave ... Thanks for the information about the original Grand Trunk . I like the 4-6-0 .

Ed ... Thanks for the video of the steam fan trip! Nice.

While in Ontario, we can talk about Canadian National Railway. It was founded on June 6, 1919. For many years, it was owned by the Canadian Government. In 1992, it was privatized, and thereafter its stock is publiclly traded.

Its freight cars have English spelling on one side (Canadian National) and French spelling on the other side (Canadien National). Only one letter is different.

Is this a Grand Trunk ?

TF, you mentioned Diet, not a big fan of diet stuff. The chemical soup in some of these diet products is disgusting. The wife will not let anything with aspartame into the house.

Than I see you think the same way that I do.  The only reason I recall suggesting it is a few of my friends are diabetic.  Judy and I do not touch anything artificial, sweeteners or anything that is hard to pronounce in food ingredients.

Beer, Boose and wine are full of sugar too as I know you realize.  I have learned sugar among other things isn't good for how my joints feel either.  Still that deviation from the norm night is not going to discontinue in my house.  I have just learned to slow my roll in recent years and stay away from those two dayers. OtherwiseTongue TiedCrying...Laugh

Judy freaked me out about an hour ago.  She told me she's getting tired of this too much time on her hands and she's getting bored.

I told her let's get up in the morning and start a craft on the glass table.  I'll do my craft and you do yours and we will admire what each other is doing tomorrow.

She said, "but I can't think of a craft I want to do".  I said would you like to learn how to make some model trees and some foam rocks?  She said okay if you're willing to show me and have some patience, I would like to learn how to do thatBig Smile

I think the corona just busted my wife into joining me in my hobbyYes... Is that cool or what?  I think tomorrow will be fun.

P.S.  A little irrelevant to this subject.  I'm not a very fancy lad but a little high-strung and sometimes down-right rambunctious at times.  Judy knows this and also knows I always make her laugh,  sometimes hysterically.

I guess that's why she puts up with me.  I'm kind of backwards as I haven't even laid my track yet.  I'm getting many buildings and many bridges done, with trees, rocks and all the stuff I will need in the end to make my layout come together.  It all has to be done eventually, even if I do it backwards.

And now my Judy wants to get into the hobby with me.  Is that cool or what?

I just noticed I need to work on my long-windednessIndifferent  I used to be short spoken and don't know what happened...... maybe the coronaZip it!

P.S. again.  I liked the Grand Trunk GarryLaugh

I grew up in Gainesville and rode my bike to Leonardo's when I was 8-13 years old to grab a slice of a Big Leo whenever I could!

When I go back there now, it is like a time machine... truly a unique place.

I did not go to UF, I was accepted, but I was also accepted to Vanderbilt in Nashville, and that is where my parents made me go.

I often ponder how much my life would be different if I went to UF like I wanted to.

I went to a rock concert at UF in 1970.  Sly and the Family Stone and Grand Funk Railroad were two of the acts.

I went to Florida Tech and we went cave diving somewhere near Gainesville.  One of the guys in the car commented how quintissential country it looked in a small town with an old lady sitting on the rocker on her front porch and the hound dog asleep next to her.  At that point, said old lady stood up, leaned over the rail and spit the spit only tobacco chewers can spit.

Evening Diners

Garry's Grand Trunk post reminded me of something I learned from my oldest daughter about five years ago.  It was something I never knew about or never stopped to take the time to hear before.

Elephants are a very large affectionate creature.  Studies have been done on elephants.  They think the human race is cute and like to befriend them and that's why they have always been so easily trainable.

Attacks on humans have been an extremely rare occurance in the past but always had a reason.

Everyone remembers the footage of the elephant in Hawaii that rampaged and went mad running away down the street.  It was because his trainer was mean and disciplined him wrong for so many years he couldn't take it anymore.  He never hurt anyone else but his trainer when this happened.

Elephants have feelings, emotions and tear ducts.  They have value of life, memory and know thier family members just like you or I do.

In India they have had problems with elephants in resent years coming into the village and attacking.  The other side of the coin of this is the herd is running out of space as it has been taken away from them more every year.

Family members of different elephant herds have been shot by helicopter marksman taking them as a threat of being too close to the Village but they were never a threat before the acts of shooting them.

Photographers,  tree or trunk huggers perhaps have taken pictures of elephant family members standing over their dead with tears comming out of their eyes for hours.  Aunt, uncle, mother, maybe grandfather I suppose.

I thought my daughters story was heart touching and something not wished to be heard but wanted to share it with you.

Not all stories are happy as the world is running out of roomIndifferent

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Dirk Pip half a dog treat.

Lack Of Work Front No Unemployment For Me! Not sure why, because I cannot get hold of a life person but my benafit is $0.00. While I am not shocked with me only working part time I like to know the reason. I did a goggle search and with me reciving SS and working part time I should still get something from the state off ILL. I think it could be because my company had been paying me wroug. I was being paid out of MO till about a year ago. Then it was fixed and I am now being paid out of ILL. Be nices if I knew that was the problem? Whistling If so I can file for unemployment in MO.

Lion While I understand why ILL might want to know a person weight, if the person was holding a job why does it really matter?

Car Repair Front! Bang Head Good news it seems like it was just a clogged fuel filter, bad news? Whistling With it being a 1992 Bob could not get the filter off and had to replaces 2 feet of fuel line. He said it took 2 hours but only billed me for .90 hours. Book time was .25 hours. Battery was dead when the car came in? Interior light was left on by the Tow Truck Driver and it took 40 minutes to charge and it was only at 30% charge. So I had to buy a new Battery! Bang Head

While total was only $229.94 with out a pay check, well it hurt!

Time to sit outside with Dirk so later, Ken and Dirk says Woof, Woof, been to the park 21 days in a row WOOF!

Have a La Belle Strasbourgeois on me.  Not just any beer but one of my top two favorites and very hard to find.

You guessed itLaugh

Post Hog!

It was a memorable evening. My brother and my bedroom was upstairs.  In the summer we slept in the basement.

The air conditioner in the window took care of the first floor but nothing more.

Our abusive childhood lead us to think of alternate measures.  Freedom at mid-night was my brother and I would crawl across my N-gauge layout to pop open the window in the basement.

We only had to do that sometimes as all our parents in the neighborhood drank and usually never even missed us.

I remember the one morning returning as the birds were singing as we felt like vampires because we were up all night.

We came in the window and the N scale layout crashed to the floor.  Yes Mom and Dad woke up and asked what the Ruckus was.  I looked at Jim like thisIndifferent because I wasn't taught to think quick enough yet.

Jim yelled upstairs,  "We had to crawl on the layout to connect a couple tracks we changed and it fell down.  Sorry to wake you and we will try to be more quiet"LaughLaughLaugh

It worked!  And I learned a valuable lesson from my brother Jim how to schmooze when schmoozing is necessary

A year without ciggys is to be applauded.

At my age, I have friends that died of COPD, MI's, lung cancer.  I have seen very attractive women turn into prune faces.  I also have friends in their 40's, who use to look like Ken and Barbie a few years ago.  Now they look 10 years older than their age.

Cal Ripkin bought a $4 mil home in Annapolis  As a kid, a third baseman for the Orioles bought the house across the street.  I don't remember his name, he wasn't an Oriole very long but I doubt his house cost more than $20K back then.
