We'll get there sooner or later!
We went to see my mom at the nursing home this morning. We sat outside and she sad inside. It was one of those windows that is hinged at the side and opens with a crank. It didn't open much and the wind was blowing hard and it was cold, 40 degrees. It didn't occur to anyone that the inmates would get cold with the windows open. We could hardly hear one another. Not a good Mothers Day.
I look at the TMZ website from time to time, because they were the first with the Michael Jackson propofol scoop. Most days I don't recognize any names except Kardashian.
Some actor I never heard of, Chistopher Meloni, owns the original Ozzie and Harriet house. For the non 'mericans, this was a sitcom on TV in the 50's. It is haunted and Ozzie's train starts up all on it's own. Maybe he didn't disable the DC in CV29?

Afternoon Diners
Flo, get the Gang and I a please, Dirk and the Gecko a treat. Flo, don't shoot the Gecko with your Bundling Gun! It's not the same Gecko!
Went to the local market and picking was slim in the meat department. Doing a half hearted BBQ of Bratwurst and Chicken Thighs. Got kind of a late start and right now I am thinking Microwaving it.
Trains are running well! Last night the PRR GG1 wanted to pick turnouts? Just seems strange that it will run just fine and does not pick a thing?
BBQ is about done and time to sit out with Dirk, so later Ken and Dirk say's Woof, Woof!
I hate Rust
Spring----
Rain, sleet, snow, wind, more wind, lots more wind, no power---all the extension cords that I run from the gang plug were neatly coiled up, and in the wire's bay of the garage. Climb over, under, and across, piles of stuff to hit the emergency release on the garage door to dig out the extension cords, such fun. Ran the main power cord to the gang box, then to the frige, freezer, lights, fan(circulate heat from the wood stove) and coffee maker. After five hours the power came back on. We were out for just over fourteen hours total, had worse. Cold for the next several days. Honey bees had just started leaving the hives, working on the spring blossoms, won't be seeing them for the next little while---robins are really POed., there isn't a worm within two feet of the surface of the ground.
In 1959 we had just over eight inches of the white stuff on the 12th. of May. Made a nice contrasting background for all the spring flowers.
Hope all are healthy, warm, dry, well fed---prayers for those in need.

Good Afternoon!
Time for a coffee and something to munch on! Make that a slice of that delicious looking cherry crumble pie, Zoe dear!
It´s a fairly humid day today, which is not my kind of weather. The older I get, the more I react to adverse weather - dang!
We had bratwurst and fries for lunch, not exactly health food, but tasty! To comfort our conscience, Petra made a nice tomato salad with fresh herbs!
Stay safe!
Happy times!

BNSF UP and others modelerWhen I lived in Richards Bay, South Africa, those geckos were incredibley common. I loved those things.
Yes, I like them too. Geckos and Anoles are OK with me. There has been an Anole in the garage keeping me company while I paint the walls. He hangs out on the tops shelf of the racks and watches me work.

I am sure you would know him if you saw him. He played Detective Elliot Stabler on Law And Order SVU for 14 years and has been in dozens of movies.

Living the dream.
Good morning ....
A year ago, my wife and I along with two other couples attended the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike and Transcontinental Railroad in Utah. It was a huge celebration!
The first reenactment was in the morning, and it was very crowded. They had huge TV's so people could see what was happening. Some Big Shots gave some speeches. At the conclusion, there were fireworks and a flyover by military fighter jets. Very impressive !
The second reenactment was in the afternoon with a much smaller crowd.

I had to bring my hummingbird feeders in so they wouldn't freeze! More snow predicted for tomorrow
I hope everyone is well,

Hi Everyone,
Brunhilda, coffee with cream, please.
TF: Nice bass!
Brent: You live in BC and Bellingham is at least 1/2 hour south. You must really like Mi Mexico. We tried a little place called Jalepenos in Fairfield, which was only ok, at least to us. We also went to a little place in downtown Bellingham. Not impressed. Then we went into a place in Blaine, nope! So, Jalepenos was the best we found In the area. Didnt know about Mi Mexico.
It's supposed to rain here all day. Happy Mother's Day to all.

Ken and others --
I have found that it helps to operate switch machines after turning on the layout. Tortoise machines don't seem to be a problem, but sometimes Atlas machines need to be flipped a couple of times to get the points to sit firmly against the stock rails. This can be a cause of intermittent turnout picking when you start up.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

TF, I think your quote is by Pink Floyd. Dark Side of TheMoon? I had the album in 1974. It reminds me of when I lived in Sarnia.

TF, I believe David Gilmore was a member of Pink Floyd, so we are bth correct.
Charlie you are so correct I would never bother to correct you.
You need no correcting!
When I see Emery Gulash in the Great Roundhouse In The Sky I'm going to thank him for taking all the wonderful 16mm movies that he did.
I met him once on a Michigan Railroad Club fan trip but never really got to know him. Again, glad he was so prolific with the films.
Cheers, Ed
Good afternoon ...
Ed ... Thanks for posting the historic Golden Spike photo. In that era, they did not have fireworks and a flyover. LOL ..... Also, thanks for posting the video of trains in Toronto in the 1970's. Very nice !
Everybody .... Have a good evening !
Ulrich,
I'm sitting here with a big grin on my face after watching the Adams Family clips! That was one of my favourite shows and I always hoped there would be a train wreck scene in each episode!
Thanks!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
John Astin was a Baltimoron and taught drama in his later years at Hopkins. I saw him doing a one man show on Edgar Allen Poe, another Baltimoron, who invented the short story and detective stories and gave the Baltimore Ravens their name.
Nevermore
Sheep by Pink Floyd
"Harmlessly passing your time in the grasslands away
Only dimly aware of a certain unease in the air
You better watch out
There may be dogs about
I have looked over Jordan and I have seen things are not what they seem
That's what you get for pretending the dangers not real
Meek and obedient you follow the leader down well-trodden corridors into the valley of Steel
What a surprise a look of terminal shock in your eyes now things are really what they seem no this is not a bad dream
Bleeding and babbling he fell on his neck with a scream
Wave upon wave demented avengers march cheerfully Into obscurity into the dream
Have you heard the news
The dogs are dead
You better stay home and do what you're told
Stay out of the road if you want to grow old"
I would take this one with a grain of salt too
The tile for the garage was delivered yesterday.
Since the bathroom is on hold waiting for a drywall hanger, I need to keep going with something else.
I decided on a 24 by 24 gray porcelain tile for the garage floor. This stuff is HEAVY, each tile weighs a tad over 17 pounds. 50 pounds of mortar will only set ten of these tiles!
This part of the project is going to take a few days, but it is going to be amazing!

Kevin! Please stop!! My back is hurting just thinking about your project!!
Seriously, that will be one very nice looking garage floor!!
I hadn't even thought of tiling my garage floor. I'll have to think about that. I was considering an easily removable cushioned floor for where the layout will be.
Hummmmm?!?
BigDaddyJohn Astin was a Baltimoron
I don't know the man, but I hope you really meant to say "Balti-morean", not "Balti-moron".
Somebody said the Ontario doesn't have any mountains. That is not true! Ontario has the La Cloche mountains that run west from Sudbury to the western end of the Manitoulin Island. These mountains are old and today they are only a shadow of their former selves. At one point they were higher than the Rocky Mountains! What makes these mountains unique is that they are made of quartz, and most of the rock in the La Cloche mountains is white.
There are numerous lakes and bays, and the north shore of Georgian Bay is a very popular cruising destination for both yachters and canoeists. Here are some views of the area:
This is the bay that our family cottage is on:
This is Crater Lake which is a 30 minute hike up from our cottage. The maps and the tourists call it 'Topaz' lake but the locals (including us) refuse to acknowledge the new names assigned by the map makers back in the 1960s who couldn't be bothered asking the locals for the traditional names:
It is incredibly deep and clear. There is very little life in the lake which, like many others in the area, was polluted by fallout from the Sudbury smelters for many years. The fallout killed everything in the lakes south west of Sudbury leaving them crystal clear but lifeless. The area is where the term 'acid rain' was coined. In 1970 the Inco nickel mine at Sudbury finished building the so-called 'Superstack' which was designed to push the smelting pollution higher into the air, thus reducing the fallout in the local area. Before then the Sudbury area had become moon like with almost no vegetation left alive. The Superstack allieviated the problem (or more accurately, spread it out enough) that the area vegetation began to recover, but the lakes have barely changed in the 50 years since the stack was built. The tourists think that the clear lakes are incredible. Little do they know the truth of the situation.
Good Morning!
We are back to trhe usual (bad) weather at this time of the year. The short downturn of the week is called the Ice Saints, a regular (yearly) occurence in Spring at my end of the Big Pond.
Just learned that Denmark keeps its border closed until June 1st. I think we better drop the idea of going house hunting in Denmark this year. We may have to drop the idea at all.
Dave, Ontario is about three times the size of Germany, but has less than a fifth of the population. Lots of open spaces and wilderness, which is much too my liking, as I turn more and more into misanthropist, avoiding social life wherever possible. The great philosopher Arthur I Schopenhauer once said "Since I know humans, I learned to love animals".
Dave: Those are some beautiful mountain views from Ontario. Thank you for sharing them.
The local news broadcast just announced that today is "Eat Whatever You Want Day", I had no idea this was a thing.
Oh well... I had my Chinese Take-Out feast yesterday, so I guess I celebrated one day too early.
