Good Morning All,

Mid 50's and breezy this morning. Sky is fairly clear - looks to be a good day. Family zoom last night so that was good.

Congratulations non-smoking Ken ! A whole year already.

Ray - hope your sisters difficulties get sorted out. Are you going to take her to see your new friend right after the dentist while she's still sedated? Could be interesting I thinkWhistling.

I've been beavering away on a compacted Sperry Railworks building which if finally decided to scratch build as there was nothing very close available as a kit. It has a flat clerestory roof that is fairly wide and shallow side roof angles so it was easier to sketch and start hacking up black foam core. I will then be lazy and build the actual walls on the foam core as it is only a backround building. It has large industrial windows with little panes so that will probably be clear sheet glued behind the frames instead of the usual canopy cement stretched into the openings.

I love the Ontario photos. Ed you really outdid yourself. I think the birding on Pelee is going to be difficult this year - no room to social distance. Do birders jostle back and forth and ruin each others pictures like bad train watchers?

Well, back to sheltering in place at the shop.  Looks like we may get a weekend in the end of the month at Lime Rock or the month after at Indy. We shall see. Lots of new wrinkles to work out before that happens though. As long as we can do it safely, I'm all for it.     Ciao,   J.R.

Mornin' folks!

Ray - hope your sisters difficulties get sorted out. Are you going to take her to see your new friend right after the dentist while she's still sedated? Could be interesting I thinkWhistling.

If all these things get finally fixed, I'm sure she will find new things to be upset about...  LOL She has definately had enough of this last year!!!  Her tooth extraction will be in the morning.  Turns out a neighbor who is a retired nurse has volunteered to take her to that appointment.  That will give me a couple less hours to have to be around her (she tends to bring down my level of well being....)  I get to take her to her 2nd. post op appointment with her surgeon in the afternoon.  Then I will be delivering several boxes of NMRA Division materials to the guy who is now the Superintendent.  Amazing how much "STUFF" I accumulated!  Then we will head a few blocks around the corner to make a short stop at my Lady Friends house. Likely I will not even get out of the car. My sister likely would have difficulty still getting in her house and, yes, by that time she should be in some pain!  My friend is excited about meeting my sister though and the feeling is mutual.  I can't tell you how many times my sister has said, "And just when are we going to be introduced to THIS lady????"  We won't be staying long.  I may get out of the car and get a hug.......  That would set my sister off if I was to actually touch the woman when we are still in LOCKDOWN!!!!  Both of us have been very careful and sure to keep safe during this time!

Sun is shining for the moment here in the Finger Lakes Region and the thermo metter is actually above freezing (37°F) this morning.....

Will be having a Zoom meeting with my son in England this afternoon which should be fun.

Thanks for the Point Pelee NP post.  I need to put it and Dauphin Island, Alabama on my bucket list.  Travel Are there any tourist train opportunities nearby?

May the 4th be with you. And May you have a fifth on the 5th to help you remember (or forget) the 4th.

Today is "The Revenge Of The 5th".

Laugh

Or today can be Cinco De Mayo if you prefer.

I mentioned I traveled between Windsor and Toronto on CN's Tempo trains several times in the 1970's.

I rode the LRCs a few times from Toronto to Kingston, back in the '80s:

I had always hoped that the US could come up with something similar. Well, there were some successful short-haul trains like these but it seems like VIA had their act together a little better.

Cheers, Ed

I'll take it as Cinco de Mayo.  Wet burritos and margaritas on the menu tonight.  Can't wait!

Hope everyone is staying healthy, sane, and warm!  It's chilly this week.  Even calling for a chance of snow on Sunday! Sigh

Good morning.  The rain yesterday gave way to a cool, sunny morning.  It was a great morning for a walk.  The birds are all noisy, the trees are budding, etc.  I like all the seasons as they change, but this is probably the best.

Today is lawn day.  Ugh.

It's also get in the attic day again to try to figure out how to route a wire for the outdoor outlet.  I had a little trouble getting to where I want to go, so I just did nothing for a couple of days.

I need to put it and Dauphin Island, Alabama on my bucket list.

Our family used to spend some time on Dauphin Island.   One of the best memories is taking the Dauphin Island ferry from Gulf Shores.  It was a small, flat ferry, the day was rainy and windy, and Mobile Bay was choppy.  About halfway across I was wondering if it was such a good idea to be out there with my family.  Dauphin Island would be a great place to have a beach house.

Have a good day everyone.

Yep, the great festival in rememberance of the ship sinking carrying mayonaise...

Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

Have a great day!

Howdy ...

Dave ..... I like the photo of the souther tip of Ontario. ....

In fact, a drive from Detorit, MI to Windsor, ON requires going south in a tunnel or on a bridge.

Ed ... Thanks for the photo of the LRC train. I recall Canadians were actively experimenting with LRC's and Turbo-Trains. I never rode on any of them in Canada. However, I did ride a turbo-train on Amtrak appriximately 1980.  ... I have been on several Via Rail trains with refurbished Budd cars, and they were nice to ride on.

Ray .... Thanks for reposting the Sinko joke. I think you have done that in previous years. It is funny each time.

Steve O ... Thank you for the Taco Tuesday treat. Yummy!

Everybody ..... Have a nice day.

Good afternoon

I have always liked Taco TuesdayDinner

Mayo subject,  I prefer Hellman's on almost everything with three exceptions.  There's nothing better than Miracle Whip on a BLT, tuna or a turkey sandwich with lots of lettuce.  For me, there's just no substitute for those 3 sandwiches.

Well,  Judy went back to work part time at the hotel last week.  Her boss is not only her boss but a friend since high school.  She is being really cool about everything.

She is limiting the girls hours.  The hotel business is really slow and she doesn't want to conflict with anyone's unemployment due to future uncertainty.  The other thing she's doing I think is really cool is she is quarantining the rooms for at least 72 hours before any of the housekeepers are sent to clean them.

It's good to see the start of things with people given their rights back as it relates to the workplace.  I hope this trend continues before it's too late for a lot of these businesses to open back up.  Every one has worked hard for what they have and should be allowed to keep it.

There certainly is alternate precautions that can be taken for any business, instead of just shutting them down.

Some days just don't seem to go well:

The Liebherr crane was under a load test. Somebody's got some explaining to do.

The crane was intended to service off-shore well rigs and wind turbines when completed.

Good Afternoon All,

Ray - did you want fries with that mayo?

Steven - that looks much better than what I had for lunch. What, no Corona to wash it down ? Of course that probably doesn't work anymore. I think Corona is owned by Budweiser which is part of the Belgian conglomorate now.

Ed - good job it collapsed under test and not on the job at sea. Hope the counterweight missed the control cab.

  Ciao, J.R.

What a piece of junk Ed! Wink

Once was not enough.  I had to watch that video three times.

I would say the head engineer designer of that thing didn't wear his pocket protector to engineering schoolLaugh

I like cranes

I would love to have one of these models but they weren't for sale.

Good evening all.

Zoe - RBF's all around please. Thanks.

Ed - Oops.... That one is purple.... My last shopping trip I seen (what I thought I had heard before) Simple Green on the shelf, and thought about the car project, so I grabbed it. No wonder it didn't touch it.... Embarrassed

Ken - Congrats on no cigs for a year!

Ray - I will grab you some crispy fries off the grill next time I do them. Save your mayo for then. Smile, Wink & Grin

Weather - We had 75F on Sunday, now 45F past two days, with sn*w in the forecast for the weekend. Grumpy

W*^k - I have now filed for unemployment, as they have not changed their stand on safety yet. In PA, if you have just cause, you can quit and still get unemployment, and while I feel that safety violations going uncorrected is just cause, I shall have to wait to see if the state agrees. More details in my posts in the designated thread.

Trains - Local shortline ran a monster freight over the weekend, and as they normally don't run on the weekend, I was not expecting it and missed it. I have seen others video and pics. 2 big 6 axle MLW's, with 2 of their higher HP 4 axle units, and 128 coal hoppers. I was fully expecting the consist, but thought it would run on their normal schedule, of Tuesday-Friday... I did happen to catch the other lines local yesterday while out running errands.

Have a open hopper car almost ready to decal, it needs one more top coat of paint before it can be done, and I am doing the hopper interior prior to decals, so as to not mess up the decal job. Once the interior dries, I will unmask the exterior, give it its final top coat, then let it thoroughly dry (minimum of 72 hours) before decals. I also have a set of decals ordered for another project car, and a project loco. (Redoing a error on the loco, and will add details and ditchlights prior to the new decals.)

I am also re-setting up a temporary loop layout, just so I can run something. I had taken down the layout for a remodel of the room, which would allow for a slightly larger layout with a better minimum radius. Now with everything going on, there is no remodel work occurring right now, and it may take a bit before things get back going again.

I will be joining a Zoom music session in a little bit, so I will check back later.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the rest of the day!

I decided that replacing the sump pump was not in my skill set.  It was a good thing I did, because the plumber spotted pin hole leaks in the copper pipe coming out of my hot water heater.  It escaped the notice of the home inspector last Friday, too.

I saw what I think is a thyroid mass on a network reporter doing an interview.  It's not easy to get in touch with a female network reporter.  I am sure they get a lot of creepy emails.

Corona isn't owned by Bud, it and Modelo are owned by Constellation Brands, who also invested in certain Canadian agricultural substances.

Ed - good job it collapsed under test and not on the job at sea. Hope the counterweight missed the control cab.

It almost looks like the counterweight system is on the barge* on this side of the ship? I've seen some of those floating cranes working and wondered how they can calculate the lifts while floating on a barge?

[edit] Now I read that the barge was actually the 2000 ton load they were trying to lift.

Here's where I found the article:

My wife will not eat a banana unless it has green on the skin and I prefer bananas with brown on the skin.

Bananas Foster is the only way to go.  This is a cooking pic, but it's served with ice cream.

My vote goes for the yellow and brown, hands down.  I never tried Bananas Foster but will have to look in to that.

Ever try this combination?  You slice them and put them on these cookies, just like you put cheese on a RitzDinner

Personally I like Bananas somewhere between Green all over and rock hard and Completely black on the outside and rotten on the inside.....  Kind of medium, I guess.

I don't know if any of you are aware, but the composer Ludwig vonBeethoven loved Bananas.  Had them as often as possible.  Loved them so much he even wrote a movement of one of his symphonies in honor of the fruit.  Yep, you may remember it, became very well known.

Good evening from the West Coast where it was a 25c day and sunny.

Found the teeny tiny pully that warped into hyper space the other day. Lucky, lucky and was a total fluke I found it, but I'll take it.

Spent all day doing spring clean up stuff and the rum is going down good.

That Mexican food looked good, we have a place in Bellingham Washington we go to when we feel like Mexican food, it is very good.

I love bananas that have just turned yellow but still have a bit of green on them. I have stopped eating them though as they have a high sugar content. I have cut out most sugar from my diet and that has allowed me to get off all medications as suger causes imflamation which is pain and I use to really suffer.

The wife is making home made pizza tonight which is always excellent.

Until next time, all the best to all.

Brent

Kevin,  I miss working in my own garage since I downsized.  I guess that's why I always go out to my buddy Erv's garage.  I go out there one day almost every weekend.

Lately we're working on restoring an old go-kart and it needs brakes.  It's always fun to have something to do in the garage when it's nice out.

I think the birding on Pelee is going to be difficult this year - no room to social distance. Do birders jostle back and forth and ruin each others pictures like bad train watchers?

Birding at Point Pelee will be impossible this year because all the parks are closed until further notice.

Birders are generally a pretty polite group of people. I have never seen a situation where people were trying to elbow each other out of the way. Usually what you get, in the Canadian manner, is permission to go first.

We put out the oriole and hummingbird food today. Of course, that means we are getting snow by the weekend!Bang HeadGrumpy

Bananas Foster is the only way to go.

I had Bananas Foster at a dinner at the Royal Canadian Military Institute in downtown Toronto. That was more than 50 years ago! I still remember it as one of the best desserts I have ever tasted!

My father, being retired military, was a member of the Institute. The occassion was a presentation about the Napoleonic Wars and it was fascinating.

Personally I like Bananas somewhere between Green all over and rock hard and Completely black on the outside and rotten on the inside.....  Kind of medium, I guess.

Not necessarily so in nature, Ray, as I found out. On one of my w**k stints in Fiji, there was a banana palm outside my room, with the top of the tree level with the balcony, and I had been following with interest the development of several bunches of bananas. I later found out that they were a variety of “Lady Finger Bananas” but at the time I was waiting for them to turn yellow, so I could sample them. Due to some late w**k nights, and to my annoyance, the bananas went from green to black in a couple of days, and so I thought I missed my opportunity for free ripe bananas.

A couple of weeks later the Chief Pilot invited me over to his house to have a weekend off, and his wife asked me if I would like caramelised bananas and ice cream for dessert, and if so, would I mind helping prepare them while she and her husband were preparing the main course. I didn’t mind but was slightly aghast when she gave me these black skinned Lady Finger bananas to peel. Expecting rotten bananas, I was surprised to find reasonably firm white flesh and on announcing my surprise, was told to try one.
This may sound stupid, but it was the most bananarest banana I’ve ever eaten, YUM!! I sadly explained how I had not touched the bananas outside my room cos they had gone black so quick, whereupon the Chief Pilots Wife laughed and said that it was only because I was used to artificially ripened bananas back home! Oh well, a lesson for next time, if there is a next time.Sigh
