Look how beautiful the engines look! They displayed  an unsurpassed powerful elegance in their historic liveries, unmatched by the drab industrial look of the current generation of Diesels.

I agree!  As a kid, I loved the Union Pacific's passenger trains coming through town pulled by these.  They seemed to stand for speed, power, and the future.

Around the MR offices, it's a tradition to go to the Chinese buffet down the road for lunch with some old friends of the magazine on Fridays. If anybody wants to join us, belly up to the buffet.

When the LION goes Chinese him either orders off the Menu, or else him will grab a BIG bowl of Hot and Sour Soup, and a small plate of egg rolls and sauce.

Always ask for a Diet Pepsi, they keep bringing me a Diet Coke.

Well they do not have Pepsi, but that does not stop me from asking for it. They got the best of me last night, I came in and she showed me to a table and said "Diet Cola?"

PS Ordered the Menu this time, Shrimp in Garlic Sauce, Pork Fried Rice and Egg Roll.

Fruit bowl with a dollup of yogurt, please and thanks.

Not good news regarding the brain biopsy. Will start the challening treatments soon to buy time.

Definitely time to focus on the model railroad to keep my mind occupied. as well as quickly getting the physical stuff done asap, like pruning fruit trees for this years crop.

Will likely finally start selling the old N scale collection. Of course the HO scale is going nowhere. Looking forward to finally creating the larger layout with those cool locos/trains/structures, etc...

That's all from here. Healing thoughts for those in need.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Good morning.  Nothing for me from the diner this morning except coffee.  I had breakfast at a local diner already.

Ulrich, that sounds great, and the pictures look great.  I hope it works out.  Without saying too much, I read an article yesterday about your country, and it had statistics on how many well-educated people were leaving, and how many more want to leave, but can't.  I couldn't help but think of you.  You are in our thoughts.

I don't want to talk about accumulated junk.  Our house is full, and my wife won't let me get rid of any of it.  It is the one issue of disagreement between us, but I no longer say anything about it.

When I was in college, I worked a summer in Lexington, Kentucky.  The great horse, Man-O-War, is buried there.  It's really true that on some of the farms, the horses live in better quarters than many people.

Have a good day, everyone.

Good morning.

I as well love Chinese,  Thanks Steve-O.  Judy and I order Chinese frequently when we come home from work tired.  All I have to do is call the Golden Wok and say the usual,  that's it, and it's on its way.

Good luck in your upcoming move and living arrangements Ulrich.  You and Petra deserve it.  Oh, ... And I got to tell you,  I always did enjoy your subtle sense of humorSmile, Wink & Grin  Moving sucks.

All I can tell you is you're on the right track.  Lighten up your load and get rid of as much stuff as possible.  I live from experience when I tell you that, as I downsized 7 years ago.

We have had a storage facility since then.  Most of the things are Judy's sentimental valued stuff but I have a hand in it as well.  For the money we have paid over the years, we could have bought brand new stuff so many times over I have lost trackCrying  Get rid of stuff for sure!

I hope your plans work out for you!

Thanks, Steven!

We have a few options waiting for us to have a look at. Each one needs to be adapted slightly to have separate accommodations. We don´t mind sharing the kitchen, but each party shoukd have their own bathroom. All options have some room available for a layout...

Here are our options:

and last, but not least (and currently our favourite due to its proximity to the beach)

This option offers the most space and has solar panels genereating more electricity than we could possibly use up ourselves. Enough to feed an EV! Next week we hope to be able to schedule a house hunting tour tom Denmark, which we plan to do mid of March.

Happy times!

Good morning ...

Kevin and Ulrich .... For different reasons , both of you are getting rid of stuff. Best wishes to each of you.

Meanwhile in Kentucky. ....

Norfolk Southern operates a busy line called the Rathole Division from Cinicinnati, OH through Kentucky and Tennessee to southern destinations. This was previously part of the Southern Railway.

Below is a photo of the NS bridge over the Ohio River. Cincinnati is on the left, and Covington, KY is on the right. In the distance is the I71/I75 highwy bridge. Partly hiding behind it, is the CSX bridge.

The Rathole Divison had many tunnels. NS has "daylighted" some of them.

Good Morning!

I had a rather bad night, so I am hoping for a good day.

SeeYou190
I am bewildered by how much stuff I accumulated up there.

I am also bewildered by how much stuff we have accumulated over the past 10 years we now live in our flat. Should we ever move to Denmark, we won´t be taking most of it with us. There is a ton of books which have been read more than twice and won´t be touched again. Wit the exception of just very few things, whatever is stored in the attic will go to the dump. Trying to sell some of it is not worth the effort. Losts of furniture won´t come with us as well. The items which can see some use will be donated, the rest is headed for the dump. A lot of layout building materials also will gon there. I am shuddering at the thought of the amount of work ahead of us. I won´t be able to do it without a massive amount of help. There is quite a bit of heavy stuff I can´t lift or carry anymore.

Our friend "down south" has finally put her apartment on the market and has already received a number of offers. Our chances for a life in the autumn of our time are getting better.

Happy times!

Put everything you don't want to deal with out at the curb. It will be gone in a couple of hours.

.

I live about 1/2 mile from a Goodwill. A lot will be donated tomorrow and it will be out of the house!

This is not a fun task.

More of a PITA if you ask me!

Put everything you don't want to deal with out at the curb. It will be gone in a couple of hours. We have been doing that for years and it works great. I couldn't be bothered trying to sell most of the stuff. The one time I did ask for money for an old dining room suite, I got a bogus $100.00 bill!GrumpyLaughLaughLaugh

Cheers!!

About 18 months ago my company gave me a monthly allowance to rent a room in Tampa since I was working there so often, and it made more sense than staying in a hotel all the time.

.

I had my "dorm room" for over a year. It is amazing how much stuff I accumulated in that 11 by 14 space. It took nine moving boxes to get it all home. I have been unpacking all day. I don't have room for most of this.

.

This is not a fun task.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Dirk half a dog treat.

Day Off today and I needed it! Last three days at work was pretty stressful. I was going topost about some of the crasy stuff that happen yesterday but the site went down while I was trying to post.

Ed Thank you for letting me bending your ear last night. I tried to do a hard reset on the CB&Q B unit, did not work. On DC it would behave right in one direction and just beep in the other direction. Tried it on DCC and it went nuts, no speed control and not matter what direction I changed it to it kept going the same direction.

Later, Ken and Dirk says Woof, Woof.

I gave up on my Windows PC and reformatted it to JMRI only.  Bought a Mac Air for everything else.  It's so much faster.

Be careful with your comparisons...

While I agree that Mac hardware is faster than any stock PC pre installed with Windows, it isn't the fault of Microsoft if one has a computer that is slow. Its the fault of whoever designed the hardware IN your computer. Microsoft didn't make your laptop, only the OS. Mac however, only uses their OS and their hardware, so either one could be to blame if one has a slow Mac. But I have some decent ameteur laptop tinkering under my belt, and it has almost always been the hardware, not the OS.

As a sidenote, if your motherboard can support it, you'll be amazed at what more RAM and an SSD can do. More so the SSD, as I obtained a cheap $30 model and it cut my boot time down to one third the origional. I have an HDD with an identical OS setup to compare to. Something to consider for those also looking to the appeal of newer laptops...

I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.

All I got right now is, I remember watching Daniel Boone when I was a little boy.  He was one of my TV Heroes.  The wilderness scenery in that show was really great.  I'm hopeful it was filmed in Kentucky?

Thank you to everyone posting me kind messages after my job loss.

.

I have been "playing with numbers" for a couple of days now.

.

As you should all know, John Allen is my hero. He was able to spend his last 20 years pretty much doing nothing but working on his model railroad.

.

It seems, if I was very careful and lived by a strict budget, I could do the same. We could make it with my health care purchased from the Affordable Health Care Act Exchanges, my wife's retirement covers the bills, and we have money in the bank that could take us to my retirement age.

.

I have already purchased 90% of what I need to build the layout. We would need to sell one more car. No more eating $400.00 steak dinners. Probably no more eating out a Chili's!

.

My friend Darin lost his job 5 years ago, dropped out of the job pool, and he is very happy now.

.

Just something I have been thinking about. I have made no plans, just weighing out the options.

.

I dug up some better pictures how it looked in the room.

BowWell done.  Well done.  Ditto on being able to talk about it at length, but you are right.  It is a MR forum.  Along that line, I got railroaded into having to speak at a large meeting today in place of my boss, so gotta run!

Water Level Route

TF, Model Railroading doesn't hold a candle to the cost of a saltwater reef tank.  That was my hobby for a number of years when I wasn't actively model railroading.  That's a beautiful tank!  150 gallon bow front?  I had a standard 125 gallon.  I miss the tank now, but not the work it took to maintain it.  Sold it with our old house when we moved 5 years ago.  Didn't have a good spot in our current house.  I might return to a fish & invertebrate tank someday, but not likely corals again.

Mike,  Thanks for the compliment.  It was a 72 gallon bow front.  For some reason it looked bigger in the wall.  I dug up some better pictures how it looked in the room.

These are older pictures before I added a more complex system with an added refugium.  I always was crazy into my hobbies as I wish to do the same in my Model Railroading.

I must have had a good wife back then, (Judy)  I was always ripping up my house and not quite completing projects before I started another oneWhistling  The third picture, I was in the process of planning a 180 gallon bow tank into the wall with faux finish stones and Roman pillars.

I could talk to you about that saltwater aquatics hobby forever but I don't think the other guys would appreciate it hereLaugh

Anyways, ... more related to railroads in Kentucky.

All I got right now is, I remember watching Daniel Boone when I was a little boy.  He was one of my TV Heroes.  The wilderness scenery in that show was really great.  I'm hopeful it was filmed in Kentucky?

I remember an episode where it was the Civil War and something to do with ammunition boxes.  It was a long time ago,  the memory is a little fuzzy but I do remember seeing an old steamer coming through.  I think it was the General?

I was quite young but the memory sticks in my mind!  Could be why I like Steamers so much todayYes

I finally gave up on my computer! It has become less and less cooperative in recent months, and it seems to be developing a mind of its own. Settings change out of the blue, it is slow at the best of times and it freezes regularly. I had the computer cleaned up about a year ago and it worked fine for a while, but obviously its age is showing.

Frequentluy that slowness is things that you have downloaded, forgot, and are still running in the background. Can be lots of boogers or other mal-ware in there.

Best thing to do is to het a new hard drive... I prefer SSD drives now a 500GB SSD is what I am specifying for all new or rebuilt equipment there. You have to reload the operating system, but unless there are any Microsoft/Windows PC programs that you must have, the free Ubuntu operating system may work for you. I do not use it here since too many people require Microsoft Office, but then the free Libra Office works just as well.

For new computers I always go wity CybertronPC and custom build the specs. Never had a problem.

An udder problem with the older boxes is that OOOTOOB is going High Def on many of its stuff, all of my Goodle movies went from standeard def to High def, and on an older machine it can buffer continously. (Not to mention that mush of our network is the old CAT-5 specification with 10/100 Mbts. All my servers and WiFi units support 1G, and I want to rebuilt the net to 10G specifications. My ISP doesn not supply that yet, but I may as well put in the CAT-7 cables and 10G switches as I rebuild the network.

Good morning.  3°, but the snow stopped sometime during the night.  I will have to get out and clean the driveway and walks.

I'm happy to finally find out what GERN is.  I hope several of you are multi-millionaires for getting in on the industry early.

Well, let's see ... what's on the schedule today?  Work on layout, watch Perry Mason, work on layout, take a nap, walk dog, work on layout.  My days are pretty busy lately.

Edit:  Second Day in a Row!  Top of the page.  Bacon, sausage, eggs, hashbrowns, Bloody Marys, and coffee, on me.  I can afford all that for the first two people.  After that, you're on your own.
