Good Afternoon,
A warm day here with a temp of about 30F. The streets are very messy,wet and dirty and that describes most cars here. Mine certainly is so as soon as it gets colder I will be heading for the car wash.
We went down to visit our friends near Thief River Falls. Had a nice visit but they are both having a few health issues. I picked up the engine I purchased and had sent there. It is far nicer than the seller described. They said there were some small chips in the paint but I could only find one and it is on the back side of a handrail so isn't very visible so those chips must be microscopic. It is real real beauty. As I've probably said several times before, it is a CNR K5a Hudson. An added bonus occured when we went through customs on the way home and although I declared it the agent waved us through so no tax!!! We were only down there 24 hours and I was well over the limit for such a short stay. We normally need 48 hours to get a higher exemption.
TF, if you do a google search on DW&P engine roster, there is a site that lists all the locos they used and if you click on an engine number there are photos for that engine. I think you might mix GT engines with DW&P as they did exchange locos at one point. Save doing a paint job.
Well time to get going and do a few errands.

Yesterday was the first day since my holiday break I did'nt have somewhere to go or someone to see. That outlaw boredom feeling.
I sure was happy when my daughter called me a little bit ago. It looks like we're going bowling today. I haven't been bowling for, I'm sure over a year. Sounds like a lot of fun and I'm happy

That scaffolding is just crazy! Reminds of some of the stuff we had to deal with, on the job. I think back on it sometimes and shutter, "I really did that?"

Reading about family backgrounds, I'm so blessed to have grown up in a somewhat normal family. My mother got Alzheimers in her 80s and did not know anyone or anything at the end. Her death was also a blessing.
The largest single building project in the United States is going on over the west side railyard in NYC. The yard is where the traincars that bring people into Manhattan in the morning are stored until the evening rush hour.

Lunchtime!
I just had a nice and tender pork schnitzel, fries and a side dish of lettuce, tomatoes and Petra´s renowned balsamico & sweet mustard dressing - yummy.
It´s a grey day, wet & windy, but too warm for the season. Temperatures are expected to risenin the next days. I don´t mind it, I am not in for that slippery cold stuff called snow.
Mad magazine - my favourite in my student years! Don Martin was hilarious. Of course, my parents didn´t think much of it, but it was very popular over here as well. The first Herman edition was published in 1967, the final one in the early 1990s. It was restarted in the late 1990s, but never reached the popularity it once had. December 2018 it finally disappeared from the news stands.
Another black giant to leave the rails! British Rail class 9F 2-10-0 no. 92212 was retired by the end of the year, as her boiler ticket expired on December 31st. She is up for a general overhaul, but it is doubtful, that she will roam British metals any time soon, as financing the work is not yet secured.

Ulrich, so sorry to hear about your mom! Even though you weren't close it is still difficult. My Mom was 88 and had broken her hip and fell (in that order....). Even with major drugs she spent the last 6 weeks of her life in horrible pain. Her passing was a blessing in many ways, but, still very sad for those of us left behind!
I found and returned a pile of about 50 or so Mad Magazines my son had collected while he was a kid. I loved them as much as he did.... My Father wouldn't let such "stuff" in the house when I was a kid so I read them at friend's houses instead. What, me worry?
I will be doing the "Minute for Mission" at both services tomorrow at church, so I will be turning in shortly (Into what I don't know...). Will have to be at church by about 8am. That is usually when I am about to hit the shower. My pastor reminded me several times that it is Minute for Mission and try to keep it that way. Yep! I have run on a couple of times over the years I think. I have timed it and it will take 3 minutes on the nose. There are people who run on and say little but take 6 to 8 minutes to finish. She told me 3 minutes would be perfect so I am safe....

Sounds like my sister..... She will be very angry when I call her that I didn't call her on Christmas which she doesn't really celebrate or on New Year's Eve. My answer to her will be that she has a phone too and knows my phone #........ If she wants to talk, I will chat with her, but she can do the calling!

Honestly I thought Mad Magazine was a total waste of my time back then. It could be I didn't have enough time for nonsense as I was dealing with more bigger fish to fry back then.

It'll probably be another four years till I see him again.
What are you going to do though? I came from a dis-functional family and I'm used to it I just don't deal with it anymore, life is too short.
I have some rather large Band-Aids for this kind of stuff here..... and I know right where they are Ice cold on the bottom rack of the refrigerator

When I moved, I tossed all my old train mags, but kept my vintage collection of old Mad Magzines. I've got one from 1957.

We had a look at Grand Central so let's take a walk about ten blocks south to 33Rd. and see how construction of Pennsylvania Station is progressing in 1908:

See in the distance some of the iron-work is already up for the great concourse. Look at the little donkey pushing the cart with the spur gear on it. One of the steam shovels probably is in need of repair? So much activity!

I see some Long Island cars in the background. This service was begun a few months before the Hudson (It was called the North River then) tunnels were complete. In total six tubes were laid under the Hudson and East rivers, which are still in use today.
It took engineers a while to figure out why the concrete-lined, cast-iron tunnel sections were moving ever so slightly several times a day. It turned out that the tubes were rising and falling with the tides. The linings were not secured to rock but were laid in the mud of the river bottom.

The P54s were originally built beginning in 1906 and were locomotive hauled. When the tunnels opened in 1908 they were converted to outside third rail and reclassed MP54.

Hello all!
I spent most of the day yesterday applying for a new passport. My old one must be around somewhere, but I have looked all over and can't find it. We are taking a Caribbean cruise in February, so I couldn't wait any longer.
I got to the Post Office, only to be told I needed an original birth certificate or a certified copy. Besides, it was a little dark the night before when I filled out the forms, and I didn't realize I needed black ink, and not dark blue. Another trip home. Fortunately, I had an original birth certificate and a black pen. Then, the web site would not let me make a same day appointment, so I had to call the Post office. Since they are generally empty anyway, I went later and did the deed.
Ken, I should get a new grill, too. I have no trouble changing a Weber burner. The grill that the previous owner left with the house just doesn't get hot enough, so I will get a Weber which is much simpler. I will get a rotisserie with this one. I really want spit-broiled Cornish game hens again.
Not a scotch guy myself. Seriously I would rather have a cold draft craft beer or a nice wine with dinner.
BigDaddyI like single malts, but they are an acquired taste for sure.
I enjoy a really good scotch about once per year. It took a while to acquire a taste for them, but now I can't stomach the cheap stuff.

Thank you, guys, for your words of comfort and condolences! I am sure my Mom has finally found the peace she had been missing nearly all of her life. Her dad died in a motorcycle accident a few days before she ws born, her stepfather was shot by the Russians in 1945 and in 1950 she nearly lost her life while fleeing from imprisonment in communist eastern Germany. Shebhad some really bad experiences in her early life, which made her into the rather harsh, unforgiving person she was. The book of her life has now been closed forever, and in a way I feel relieved. Unfortunately, I now have to deal with my brother, who is much like Mom, maybe even worse. A genuine PITA, with whom I am not on speaking terms. He was my Mom´s caretaker, which meant little care, but taking a lot. I see some ugly time coming up when it gets to sorting the estate.
Well, I will deal with all of that when I come to that.
My aunt has a great story about scotch. She went drinking with an old boy friend and ended up at his apartment. The Something About Mary zipper scene occured and at the moment of entrapment the new girlfriend arrived
The three of them all went to the ER. The ER doc came out to tell the women the liberation was successful and was surprised to find two women there, one of which was his old girl friend too, my aunt.
She will not drink scotch anymore. I like single malts, but they are an acquired taste for sure.

Not much going on today. I'm still working on some wiring in a guest bedroom. The railroad layout hasn't had much attention lately.
I'm looking for some pictures I took when I was in NYC last, but I can't find them. They're in a box downstairs somewhere.
