Ulrich, I think I'd want to talk to the hospital administration. 90° hospital room is unacceptable. Good luck!

No A/C and no money to buy portable sets.

I seldom watch videos about that place - I´d rather go there - it´s 35 minutes from my place. I have to go there and see the latest addition - Italy - before we pack up and leave Germany for good.

Happy times!

Good morning from corn and cattle country.

"Top Gear" used to be on TV regularly here, but I have not seen it for several years.

JaBear, thank you!  That was the video I was talking about!  If some of you haven't seen it, I know it's long but it's pretty interesting.  The challenges of building a model railroad over 10 miles of countryside, powered by car batteries hooked to the track.  There's also some neat scenes of the Modelleisenbahn Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany, touted as the biggest model train exhibit in the world.

Courtesy of JaBear, here's the James May video:  https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xja5i0

Here's the miniature wonderland in Hamburg:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrb7Fw3zlSg

I imagine many of you have already seen these.  When you're retired, you have time to watch online videos.  Retirement is great!

Thanks, everyone, for the videos of the electric locomotives.  I wish I could have seen them used.

I'd love to hear what happened when Olivia and her mother got together.

Ulrich, I think I'd want to talk to the hospital administration.  90° hospital room is unacceptable.  Good luck!

I have to read up on all the side effects of every drug.  Unfortunately, I can sometimes find only official documentation, which does not include all the side effects.

This is my first post from my real computer, after a year of using a tablet.

Hi there!

It´s way too hot to feel comfortable! Room temperature has reached 90F! I can´t wait to get out of this place!

Good Morning All,

A regular to go please Zoe. Back off the road for a couple of weeks. No real layout progress to report though I did get things cleaned up pretty well. It's good to see Ulrich back and recovering well.

Youngest son is off to California tomorrow to seek his fortune. I'm actually not too worried as he has a lot of common sense as well as his Masters in math. He always manages to find something to do and at least has a place lined up to stay.

We were at Thompson in the far northeast corner of Ct over the weekend. First permanent road circuit in America actually completed by 1940 though it wasn't until the early 50's that it hosted events. The present configuration is the 4th official one and is twisty with some elevation change as well as using part of the oval. The straight actually has two slight bends in it but in the slower cars we just ignore that. One of the few race weekends we actually get to run our own cars, #1 son won the Vanderbilt cup Josh won 4 of 6 heat races. I was second but the course really suited smooth driving, not my overenthusiastic attempts.

Lots to catch up on in the shop.   Catch y'all later.   J.R.

Gidday Chloe, better get John, and Ulrich, if he’s allowed one, a soothing beverage, so they can relax and watch “Captain Slows” second attempt, in comfort. Plus, anyone else if they want one, please.

Those “Little Joes” look impressive, Garry, it’s a pity they weren’t developed on, but I presume that the US love affair with cheap fuel, and perhaps the cost of keeping catenary serviceable in all weathers, saw to their demise.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gamg and I a Beer and Ulrich anything he wants!

Got the rear jungle cut but did not get weed wack. Forgot we had a Vet visit for Sparkie the Rocket Dog.

Cost me $65.00 to find out Sparkie is getting old! We know he has allergies and he has been sneezing outside. Seems he has some reverse sneezing, sounds a lot like wheezing so wife had to take him in. I knew it was because of his allergies, but I am not a vet so what do I know. Reason I knew it was his allergies? He only did it when we took him outside.

Ulrich Funny you brought up Captain Slow. I have been watching old Top Gear of late. I did watch the video, seems his engine burned up.

Day 55 and counting none smoking Ken posting again!

I found an Iphone 8 today!   It was on a bench at our waterfront.  I posted on our community page, but no one claimed it.  The battery was dead so I put it on the charger

Eventually I could read the messages that display even if it's not unlocked.  Olivia missed her 12:30 am and 1:30 am you better be home young lady, ultimatums from mom.  Mom got a little profane.

If I lost a $800 phone I would have backtracked and looked everywhere 3 times.  Olivia evidently didn't because I didn't find the phone until 4 pm.  I called Mom and told her I had daughters's cell.  Mom came over right away and was a stunning looking woman.  She was not going to tell Olivia her phone had been found right away.

While ,we are in Montana, let us not forget fallen flag, Milwaukee Road.  Here is  video of MILW operating in Montana. Their "Little Joe" electirc locomotves were MU'ed with diesels.

I have never been around an electric railway (other than New Orleans streetcars and NYC subways).  Standing by the track, were the locomotives quiet?  Just something I've always wondered.

Yes, Garry, we can't forget the legendary Milwaukee!

The MILW seems to have been overshadowed by the other northern transcons, but it was still a great railroad! Unfortanuately it got there last, at which point all the good routes had already been taken. Having narrowly missed the columbia gorge as a result of the building of the SP&S it had to contend with snoquamee pass, a route plagued with heavy snow fall. Also the MILW missed alot of important area, such as Spokane, the major gateway in eastern Washington. In the end the railroad just couldn't compete with the giant BN, the ICC seems to have failed to predict the effects the BN merger would give the MILW.

As an answer to Johns question, based on videos I've seen of the North East Corridor, electrics certainly make noise.

I saw one of the little joes in dear lodge last summer, they are MASSIVE! Regretabbly it was pouring rain then so I could get a great look at it!

Lion .... Interesting photo of new rail line construction.

John York1 ..... The gas station looks very good .  .... You asked about the sound of electirc locomotives. Here is a video of Milwaukee Road which includes electirc locomotives you can hear as well as diesels.

Years ago a BBC show with Jeremy Clarkson had a group who built a very long railroad. I could not find it on youtube -- not sure if anyone remembers that.

I remember that! They built a OO scale line from Barnstaple to Bideford along the old railway grade. It was hosted by James May and was available on Youtube some years ago.

Happy times!

Good morning.  Something strange this morning -- the sun is actually out today. For the first time in memory, rain is not predicted for the next several days.

I enjoyed the "Biggest Little Railway".  Years ago a BBC show with Jeremy Clarkson had a group who built a very long railroad.  I could not find it on youtube -- not sure if anyone remembers that.

N Scale gas station finished and lights hooked up.  Surrounding area needs landscaping.  Not sure in real life if I'd want the gas station just feet away from the mainline.  Still had trouble getting roof angles correct.  I may try to build a new roof with angles a little different.  There's a reason I never became a carpenter.  Still enjoy scratch building structures the most of anything with the layout.

With the sun shining, I may actually get the lawnmower out and try cut the jungle.

Lion, I missed reading why you are unable to get to the layout room.

Just saying hi to all!

I am starting to feel a little better. Breathing has improved, but the pain in my chest is still nagging. We have lot´s of sunshine in my neck of the woods, which makes a hospital stay not at all pleasant, as the rooms have no A/C. Today´s high was 85F and we expect 92F tomorrow. Quite a lot!

Doctors say I might be out by Thursday!

Well, Ken appears to be having issues with a smoke unit. Ken, you are accually the first time I've heard of someone accually using one. I really hate strong smell (except cookies baking in thee oven), some I don't think I will ever turn on a smoke unit, EVER!

When I was younger I went on a train shop shopping spree with my grandpa. The most expensive item purchased was a (used) BLI USRA light mikado decorated in Union Pacific. The thing was the first steamer I ever ran and hade all the bells and whistles, including a sound decoder (this was ten years ago when that wasn't as common as it is today) and a smoking unit. I, being younger, though a smoking steamer would be really cool, but my grandpa said it would dirty up the track, so it was never used.

About the Biggest Little Railway, I must admit, I really took a while to get what was going on. It is pretty impressive though. I think the used some weird metal rail section with like code 2000 rail or something!

If I ever build a railroad that size though, I think I'll add enough sidings and spurs to allow for operations. I wonder if they every ran a train on it again...

Of course it isn't quite train mountain, which has only half as many scale miles, but more actual miles!

Have a good evening everyone!

Regards, Isaac

 Afternoon diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Ulrich what ever he likes.

Still Monsoon Season here in ILL. Well I guess that is Ok because I felt like ash pitt. My blood sugar crashed this morning around 3:15 AM, it was down to 44! Got the blood surgar up but I felt bad the rest of the day.

Brent My dad told me had two choices when I turned 18. I could move out, or I could move out? I joined the Army.

Ed I think the smoke unit was on. But I guess I over filled it, I don't remember if it was in the booklet or I was told at K-10 Model Trains but I added 6 drops of the junk!

 Later, none smoking Ken

Good morning from a cool and cloudy West Coast.

Bear, the family home will always be the family home and the kids can come home whenever they want and stay as long as they want.

My wife and her siblings were thrown to the wolves at the end of high school and at forty I had a lot of debt to pay off from her ten years of University. I feel it is a parents responsibility to make sure their kids are educated and that includes University. I have been lucky with my son as he has made plenty doing movies and has not needed help. I want them to hit the ground running after University not mired in debt.

My daughter is heading out to their grad camping trip tomorrow and I am loading up the truck to take in supplies for their two nights. It is 2 1/2 hours North of Vancouver and cars need to be left at the highway as the road is strictly for off road vehicles. I think 75 kids are going so we will be loaded up. I then come home and go back on Wednesday to help bring them out. It's about 7 hours round trip and I will probably have to help with tents and things so it will be a long day. Lots of bears in the area so I am giving bear spray lessons. Apparently there is an adult with a shotgun onsite in case a Grizzly shows up and wants to party instead of moving on.Laugh

These kids are great, they are all super brains and I am sure the two days will be like watching "The Big Bang Theory" with 75 Sheldons.Laugh

Time to go do something.

All the best to all.

Yay, I got my computer working, although I can't find my wireless connector and will have to go buy one.

But, after a year of posting from this stupid tablet, I will be able to use a real computer again, and finally post pictures.

I still have a lot of work to do on reconfiguring the layout, and I have no idea where my good camera is, but all in good time.

Batman, thanks for the link to the “Biggest Little Railway in the World”. It went well with this mornings first coffee. I see its build is a TV series but I’d be surprised if it was shown here, more’s the pity. Not enough angst, or plain nastiness between the participants to make for a visual feast!
My 2 Cents Her-in-doors and I were told that when the kids leave the nest to make their mark on the world, then the parenting preparing them for this, was Good. However, with all the changes to their lives, I wouldn’t be so quick to sell up the family home: after all, if everything went absolutely pear shaped for them, as highly unlikely as that maybe, it is still regarded as their anchor/ safe place. My 2 Cents

Good late evening.

Went to my Daughters grad ceremonies at the school last night, I was proud yet sad as we have been so involved with the school for the last 15 years with our two kids. We will be empty nesters come September and need to do some adjusting on the home front and get set up for childless retirement. I retired ten years ago and the wife eight years ago.

Like it was with hockey the new parents want to take over the duties coaching and volunteering and rightly so. I started coaching baseball right out of Highschool and was active with hockey right up until my #1 son headed off to University. I yield to the young parents. Laugh

We still have the formal ceremony in Vancouver on the 28th, a real hoity toity affair and a long way to go for all involved. I bought a new suit two years ago for my sons and that is the last time I wore it.Laugh Getting dressed up is not my thing.

I had a long post two days ago that went poof when I hit submit, i think it is the computer I am using, I like the MAC way better.

Ken, keep up the good work on the smoking front, I am really happy it is going well for you.

I have only worked out once in the last two weeks as I have been sick and the Arthritis has not been kind either, tomorrow I will get back to it come ... or high water.

Ulrich, good to see you on the mend. Can't remember how long my Mom was in Hospital after her bypass. She had the nurses come to the house several times a day until they came just once a day and then stopped altogther, she had great care and attended the exercise sessions at the hospital for a long time afterwards.

This house hunting is tiring and with the wifes Mom going downhill all of a sudden I think we need to give it a rest, at least we don't have to move and can do so at our leasure.

Time to hit the sack. All the best to all.

Make excellence a habit not a goal.

 Ken, From June 2nd...

cudaken
Ed when you test ran the Mighty I1sa Hippo did it smoke? Yes the smoke switch is thrown and I added some BLI smoke fluid.

gmpullman
I'm 99.9% certain I had the switch turned off. I forget how the switch was positioned when I put it back in the box? You only need about 3-4 drops of fluid.

cudaken
This afternoon I pulled from the rails to clean the drivers. Rear driver wheels had oil dripping off the sides of the wheel!Bang Head

Did you put THREE drops of fluid in or four DROPS? Any more than that is TOO Much!

The last time we talked I was going to tell you when you said the smoke unit wasn't working that sometimes the cause is TOO much fluid!!!

I guess you figured that outWhistling

The factory fill is probably good for a whole day of running without adding any more. Use it all up before adding any more!

This smoke unit was from a PRR T1. It burned and shorted even though it was physically switched OFF! Wiped out the decoder, too. Engine was just sitting, address wasn't even selected. Just started sparking, and smoking, but it was the wires burning, not smoke fluid!

 IMG_8095_fix by Edmund, on Flickr

I despise smoke units and the smell of the smoke. Don't know why anyone would want one of those puffing around the layout.

Glad this didn't cause YOU to light up Cool I have no use for smoking HO models Ick!

Cheers, Ed

Good evening all.

Zoe - A Cola Float please. Thanks.

Ulrich - Glad you are on the mend.

Ken - I would check local train shows for the CMX and Centerline cars. I found a used CMX car, without box, sitting on a table at a local show one day, and asked the gentleman how much he wanted for it. When he said a very reasonable amount, I quickly purchased it. It was on a table with a few other nice gems mixed in with a bunch of "train set quality" items, so I think that many missed it sitting there. I won't say exactly how cheaply I got it, but will say I paid more for the centerline car than I did that CMX....

Steven NWP - Glad to hear you got the vehicle repaired.

Speaking of vehicle front - Signed the paperwork for my new (to me) car today, and while it is a few years old (2011), it only had 47,000 miles, and was garage kept, so is very clean! So, I now have a light blue CR-V sitting in my driveway. My old car (an 2006 Escape) was getting to where it would need more fixed than what I was willing to do, as it would need major body work (both outer and inner rear fenders, as well as rear shock supports.) as well as a bit of motor work for a oil leak.

On a vehicle now 13+ years old, with over 140,000 miles, it would be a lot of time and money that would do very little to affect the value of the car in the eyes of the insurance companies, should something happen. (Like a 4-legged critter jumping onto the hood to breakdance...) I feel them giving me a couple grand for trade and discounts off the newer car was pretty reasonable, and having a decently low payment was worth it.

(While I dislike being a member of the "book-of-the-month-club", I could not afford to just buy a vehicle outright right now.)

That just means a little less train money for a bit... But, a nice railfan vehicle out of the deal, so I won't complain.

Well, I'm off to the sleeper berth, hope all are well, and all enjoy the rest of the night!
