Was is that in your picture? An E ?

Yes, an E8. NYC did have some passenger F3s. 4 A units and 2 B units if I recall. They bought them thinking the added tractive effort would be needed on the grades east of Albany on the B&A. Turns out the six-axle Es and PAs had plenty of pull for the Berkshire grades.

Later they were used on the Big Four. In 1958 they were regeared for freight service.

Yes, Indeed! Top '0 The Page. Tell Flo to spike the check on my nail and I'll settle up before closing Smile

Mike is chipping in, too so let's belly-up to the bar (salad, desert or otherwise) and have at it!

My friend Mark is on the right.  He was the most boisterous high energy guy I ever met.

He was born in South Africa, but has been a US citizen for 30-35 years.  He was a more avid motorcyclist and proficient that I was.  I have not ridden in a couple years and was not following the local motorcycle forum

I did see Marks' pics from his annual MC trip to South Africa a couple days ago on facebook. The land is a beautiful as most of our national parks.  I thought for an instant, that would be fun, then having ridden with Mark, I thought, I'd just be holding up the group.

Today Mark was last in line and then he wasn't there.  The group went back, found his minimally damaged bike and Mark lying beside it.  No one knows if it was a medical emergency or what happened.  Mark won't be coming home.

Tell you family you love them.  Life can be shorter than you think

Good afternoon from the sunny West Coast. It was 10c today.

Henry, so sorry to hear of your friends passing, at least he was doing something he loved when it happened. I was riding with a friend and noticed he was not behind me anymore. I went back to find he had met a Volvo head-on, it was not a pleasant sight. He lived to tell about it, however, when I went into emergency at the hospital with him, my Mom was there and my grandmother had just died of a heart attack. I have had better days.

Charlie, sorry to hear you are hitting a rough patch, those Manitoba winters are far too long, it's too bad you can't get somewhere warm for a few weeks to charge up the old batteries. My Dad was 43 when he pulled the plug and we came out to the West Coast (and I'm glad he did) He just could not take the cold and snow with his health issues.

Watched a really interesting video on circuit boards today.

I think I really have the SMD 603 soldering down. After blowing through about twenty of them in learning the art, all of a sudden shazam! After reading one article where the guy promised it would become easy to solder those little dots with practice, it did. I figured it was like learning a tough piece on the guitar and just kept plugging away. I paid about $2.25 for 500 of them so I still have lots left.

Rode the bike this morning and shattered my old record for 20km (49:09) on a really tough mountain program, then went with the wife and dogs for a two-hour walk in the sunshine, so I burned off about 1500 extra calories that will be partially returned with a couple of Rum and Pepsi's.Drinks

I think I'll go pick up the guitar for an hour or so and then after dinner, park myself in front of the idiot box tonight with a giant bowl of popcorn covered in lots of butter. I'll still have to eat something else before bed or I will fade away.

Tomorrow I think the trainroom will be the destination as it will be a no workout day. I have lifted the RH and TT off the layout in order to install the lights. Sort of like this.

Time for Rum!

All the best to all.

Good Morning All,

Henry - Sorry to hear about your friend. Seems to be a run of bad news lately.

Haven't been on the layout yet since I got back.

Speaking of the NYC, there was the jet powered RDC they did in the 60's that set a record at 183mph. One of the volunteers at the museum was an engineer (not the engine driver type) on the project. One reason they didn't continue with the project he told us was in addition to going really fast, the jet engines also blew all the loose ballast off the track. That would have been interesting.

I had to pick one of our guys up at the White Plains airport last night. Flight was supposed to land at 6pm and tracking had it on time. At 6:05 the cell lot display suddenly changed to "diverted to JFK". Turns out a plane got disabled on the runway and they had to shut down until they figured out how to move it. After hemming and hawing for a while, they decided to finish the trip to the original destination instead of terminating 30 miles away in the middle of NYC. Only lost 2 hours messing around so in the end it was ok. Just glad the CFO didn't go to get him. She would have been on the rev limiter right away.............

Good Morning,

Henry, sorry to hear about your friend. I've stood on that spot where that photo was taken. It is in Cape Town in a park at the very tip of Africa.

Not much new here. Not sure where things are going.

Good Evening!

Henry - I am sorry to hear about your friend Mark! Life is so precious we shouldn´t waste it by quarreling with our loved ones. I have had my share of close calls and I am so grateful every morning to be able to start a new day on Petra´s side.

Same here! I am scared stiff by reading what is right now going on in this country. I found my name on an Antifa map of Germany....

According to the police, being listed as a possible target for an attack does not constitute a threat. Need I say more?

No, you need not. I've warned you to keep this topic off the Forum.

Far, far from Upstate New York —

         but sure worth a look!

Pour yourself a cup of sake and enjoy:

An open-end observation platform!

I wonder what Mr. Pullman would think?

Ed,

I think that is the cats meow. It would be cool to get permission to be on the observation platform when going forward though I think between the speed it goes and the fact that the control cab is just above the deck you'd get a firm no.

Just about time to head out. Maybe even get some time in on the layout. I did finally decide to alter the yard throat so it makes more sense. We shall see. Big thing will likely be getting a clear shot to route the turnout controls.

Thanks everyone for the condolences.

It's the suddeness for Mark's passing that caught me with my pants down.  Nearly all of my friends and relatives have suffered miserably until the merciful end.

Politics is all local.

We have enough diversity to battle out US or Candadian politics.

German, Swedish, Polish, British, Nigerian, Australian or Saudi politics don't inspire forum fights because none of us have knowledge or an opinion.  Well, Ulrich has an opinion, but he is our only link to the continent.    Unless Angela Merkel signs up, there is no problem here.  JMHO

I am not so sure about Mr. pullman, but maybe Mr. Lowey would approve.

Yes, I do see a Lowey influence there now that you mention it. At first I thought the "football-helmet face guard" style on the end railings was a bit much but I'm kind of getting used to it.

I wonder if Kato makes or will make a model of this?

Amazing.

I maybe out of line here but it seems that scolding Ulhich for stating a fact that he maybe in danger from a political group seems a little harsh. If we are going to nick pick then people that say they are sending prayers should be scolded because some of us might be atheist. Or if one of us mentions something that happened to us in Nam they should also be scolded because that was very political. Just my 2 cents worth, I'll be quiet now and go sit in the corner.

Good evening

I looked at April MR and saw the joke. LOL .... I wonder how many years MR has been doing the April fool joke.

We are still going back and forth to Nashville and have to detour around the big mudslide On I-24. ...   I saw an update.  Workers are building a temporary road in the median which is very wide at that location . The temporary road is estimated for completion on March 15, and will be 3/4 mile long. ... Clearing the slide and rebuilding the hillside will take much longer. They will remove 5,000 large dump truck loads of earth and rock. They will bring in  about that many loads of new rock to rebuild the hillside.
