Good Afternoon!
We had an enjoyable "lunch" at our favorite Asian restaurant. We like to have our main meal around noon, which is the common dinner time in Germany. For the first time in the 35 years we are together, Petra and I had the same meal - beef and veggies in a coconut & curry sauce, served with rice, of course! Petra had a Bei Jing soup for a starter and I enjoyed my usual spring roll. We paid about $30 including beverages, which is really reasonable price, given the excellent quality of the food, served by rally friendly folks. I am just thinking that Todd the King of Toddland would love the place (and the waitress).
Both of us ate too much, but a slice of Petra´s birthday cake still found a place!
The remnants will be finished off tomorrow!
No snow in sight! I think we already had our winter, as we see flocks of migrant birds heading north. At the moment, it´s rather wet outside, with the temperature in the mid 40s F. The weekend will see temperatures of 55F and above - spring time in Germany - well, at least the North!
Steven - thanks for the good wishes! I shall try to stay out of the hospital, I think I had my fill of going to that place.
Steven OtteI was about to have a heart attack myself this morning, when I was shoveling the snowplow dam from the bottom of the driveway,
That´s what happened to a neighbor of mine some years ago. Unfortunately, he didn´t make it. 52 is not the right age to go!
Better to go slow!
Happy times!

Welcome back, Ulrich. Glad the old ticker is still ticking.
I was about to have a heart attack myself this morning, when I was shoveling the snowplow dam from the bottom of the driveway, and the snowplow came through again and ADDED to it...
I need a day off. Otherwise my driveway and sidewalks will never get cleared until spring. Now where's that lying groundhog?!

Good morning, everybody ...
Bear .... the cake looks delicious !
Ulrich ... I hope you are well today.
Henry .... Good idea to add weight to the caboose.
As long as we are in CA, I heard their high speed train project just got cancelled. Oh well... We can keep our memories of train travel in the past. ...
When I was a kid, our family went to CA from Chicago. via Santa Fe Ry. We rode on Santa Fe to San Diago from LA, and return. Then we rode the Southern Pacific Coast Daylight to San Franciso. From there, we rode the SP Shasta Dayight to Portland. After that, we were out of CA. We took UP to Seatle. CP SHips to Vancouver. CP Rail through the Rockies and to its connection with Soo Line in ND. Then it was SOO to St. Paul, MN and CB&Q to Chicago. .... I miss train travel of before Amtrak. Model Railroaidng helps preserve the memories.

Thanks Mike! You’re exactly right, I was “Bubbytrains.” You’ve got a good memory! My funky screen name comes from my wife’s nickname she gave me a long time ago; it’s a combination of “buddy” and “hubby.”
Yes, for some reason the forum software still allowed me to sign in but wouldn’t allow me to post a comment or start a topic. I e-mailed Kalmbach CS but never got a response. I didn’t realize others were having similar problems until yesterday. The guy who asked about Monongahela RR gave me the idea to create a new name.

Ulrich Glad to see you back! Say to Petra for me!
My birthday is this month, so I called a friend today that is older than me. Asked him "Larry, with you being older and wiser than I where would go to get your Birthday Suite Cleaned and Pressed?" He busted a gut, I won't post his answer.
Came home to a plastic bag of Dog Poop on the front porch! My wife likes to think of her self as being sophisticated? Yet she could not walk 10 feet to the trash can? She seems to think any where outside of the house is a trash can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ulrich, good to see you broke out of jail. Happy birthday to Petra.
The morning news showed a bunch of reporters driving around Baltimore on wet roads at if something disasterous was going on. The threat of ice caused cancellation of schools across the state, but when I rolled out of bed, only Sheldon lived in a place below 32 degrees.
Brent, you cannot use the common abbreviation for diagonal cutters in this forum. There is no end to what can be redefined as unacceptable these days.
My AMB caboose weigh hardly anything, less than an ounce with trucks couplers and the works. I went fishing in the trash can and found some steel weights to use from cars that had no social redeeming value.

Good afternoon .
Ulrich ... Good to see you. Glad you are home now. Say Happy Birthday to Petra.
We returned home from Nashville after Midnight. Not much improvement with Shelley’s Mom. Also, the stolen car has not been recovered.
It rained here for the past two or three days.
Ulrich, Good to see you back! And may Petra have a Happy Birthday as well - it's probably pretty good already just having you out of hospital - have a nice dinner, enjoy.
Brent, what kind of racing Datsun 510? I've helped with a couple of them.
Still getting s**w here though it is turning to sleet. Not going to stick it out to the bitter end today so I may head home in a couple of hours, beat the traffic and the ice. Later, J.R.
I was hoping to drive to Supertrain in Calgary this year. I hear the snow through the pass this year is making this photo look downright balmy. My wife wants me to fly, however, there is no fun in that.

I am glad you are back in your home, Ulrich, and I do hope you can find some relief for the stressful situation that is exacerbating your condition.

I hope you both have an enjoyable time at your dinner tomorrow.

Good morning it is -4 and still snowing. There may be something to this global warming, it doesn't seem to rain as often but when it does it really dumps, seems to be the same with snow.
Had to get out my guitar Bear and run through this one, a Johnny Cash I am not.
Speaking of roughing it in the snow, When I was young and a complete idiot I took a 2 week outward bound survival course in the mountains in the middle of nowhere in February. We were driven three hours North of Vancouver on pavement and then another hour up an old logging road. We were deposited in a freezing cold slush storm for two weeks. Had a sleeping bag but no tent, just a piece of plastic to enclose ourselves in. The worst experience of my life. I did a lot of backcountry backpacking after that, however, it was always in the late Spring and Summer.
Young Steven looks like it is back to the bicycle. At one time I had my Datsun 510 racing car, my RX-7 and my Van. I would still ride my bike 27 km to work and 27km back. Exercise is very important.
Haven't seen a plow since the snow started, however, my truck cuts through the snow like it is not even there. It was snowplowing through the snow as it was too deep to just go over it. Had to slow down as I was blinded by the snow it would throw up. Reminded me of those train videos with the snow being thrown up. Both my front and rear diff have lockers on them.
I will go and check on the neighbours later as they are elderly and from Taiwan. Snow is not something they are really used to we need to go out anyway, so will see if they need anything.
Dave, we have been eating lot's of ribs lately. With the price of pork plummeting South of the border, someone has to buy it and it is cheap, cheap, cheap, so enjoy those ribs before they are all gone. Once things return to normal they will be out of range as there will likely be a run on pork bellies.
Time to go start shoveling. There is suppose to a lot of activity at the house this week with lots of dog sex and timing is everything.
I didn't know there was an automatic editor on the forum. In an earlier post, I used the "B" word to reference one of our female canines, it automatically changed it to "female dog". I guess using the English language in a legitimate way is not allowed.
All the best to all.
hon30critterI don't know what hospital food is like
... as bad as you can imagine. It is an insult for your eyes as well as your taste buds! Petra came to see me every day and always had a few goodies for me! What would I do without her! I am just glad I am out and back home, so we can celebrate her 61st birthday tomorrow with going out for dinner! It´ll be a favorite Asian place again, as the food is just excellent and the prices reasonable, very reasonable!
Tinplate ToddlerI am back from my field trip to the ER,
Good to see you back Ulrich!
I am disappointed to hear that the doctor brushed off your stress with a platitude instead of delving further into what can be done. His advice was pretty useless. It's like saying to someone who suffers from depression to just 'cheer up!'. It just doesn't work that way! At least the additional funds will give you a bit more security I hope.
Just look at the bright side! You are back home with Petra's cooking instead of hospital food! I don't know what hospital food is like in Germany but I can tell you from personal experience that it is no great shakes here in Canada. I think it's a plot to get you to want to leave the hospital as soon as possible.
Take care!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
I am back from my field trip to the ER, where they kept me until a few hours ago, doing some more checkups. I also had to wait for the "big" doctor to sign my release papers. Petra had taken me to the ER as a few minutes after I typed my last post, I started to feel really miserable. Driving me was much quicker than waiting for the ambulance to take me. Upon arrival I was hooked up to various gadgets and gizmos, which were supposed to answer the question whether I am still alive or not. As it was Friday evening, that was all they did - until yesterday morning, when they ran the whole procedure. From the words the doc mumbled I gather that there is nothing new wrong with me, just the known heart condition. Add to that the exposure to quite a lot of stress recently and there is your ticket to the ER. Doc told me not to get stressed so much, but failed to tell me how!
Little Timmy, with great sadness I read about your Mom´s accident and her passing. Please accept Petra´s and my sincere condolences!
While tied to the bed in our hospital, I thought I should have a portable micro layout which I could tote along to keep me busy. Something like a simple circle of track, maybe in a box. I already have the train for it!
All I need is a lighthouse for it, but I have not yet found one I could afford. I know that Walthers has a nice kit, which I could rework into a British looking lighthouse, but it is beyond reach!
Well, this is life!

Been there, done that. Cuba Ice Camp. -10°F with a 20mph breeze..... Amazing how long you can stay in the sleeping bag (double) on about 8" of straw when it is that cold....
I'm looking forward to spending a few days in Key West in early April...

Yep, white outside my windows here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS. Don't bother trying to come here today. We're closed! I may drive over to the Vets to find out if there is a good Pet Sitter in the area still. Not sure the lady I had years ago is still in business. She was excellent! Only thing standing between me and Key West in April is finding someone qualitied to take care of the kitties while I am away. Has to be someone who is comfortable giving a cat his insulin every morning.

Will have to do a lot of walking inside the house to get my 10,000 steps in today. LOL Hopefully I will spend some quality time working on the (model) railroad today as well. Getting some new buildings in place at the moment.

NWP SWPSo I'm once again carless.Crying
Cars are so over-rated. I have not owned a car in almost 40 years.
If you cannot get there on the subway, you don't need to get there.
NWP SWPI checked the ATF fluid level and it had fluid I even added a quart but no good.

Good Morning All,
Coffee and a blueberry donut please Zoe. Excellent advice herrinchoker. Like I said, I've forgotten most of what I learned about slush boxes. The ones in the pickups we have are pretty heavy and more than I want to mess with.
The big storm is now predicted to start around 10am so I'm in the shop all snug. Still supposed to turn to rain so we'll have thick ice and power outages tomorrow morning. Glad we got the trailer done before it started though.
Need to do more research on service areas for yards. Might even break down and get the new book offered above. I'm doing the transition era (like most everyone else) so a wide range of stuff is feasible though I think keeping it simple will do best. The yard I am basing this on had a small coal tower, sand, water and fuel from a truck IIRC.
Well, back to the shop and w**k Catch Y'all Later, J.R.

Are you sure that you haven't moved to Whistler? More than 3 ft of snow!! I'm sure it looks beautiful, that is until you have to go out in it!
We are supposed to get somewhere around 10" on Tuesday which is not a huge issue, except it will be accompanied by 50 mph winds and followed by freezing rain. I think I'll decide to not drive to the club in Barrie. The weather here in Bradford is usually not too bad, but when you get to Hwy. 89 which is half way to Barrie, you will usually run into a wall. Total whiteouts. There have been many tragic accidents on the highways north of Hwy. 89 because of blinding snow.
We have a huge package of pork ribs in the fridge. I think I'll work on those tomorrow. Let's see, a nice spicy rub, cooked low and slow for 2-3 hours, then some BBQ sauce.... Cook some more with the lid off.... Too bad it will be too nasty to use the smoker.
You are all welcome to join us!
Evenin' folks!
Janie I could use a refil for my decaf please....
Timmy, my deepest condolences and prayers to you and all your family!!!
I haven't had time to write anything here for a couple of days so I thought I would pop in to say hello before I head to bed. What has been occupying my time? Oh, all kinds of stuff. MLK Business, Scout stuff, and of course some planning to go on a vacation (first one I have had in years) to see a lovely lady down in Key West, Florida and meet her daughter and Son In Law. She and her daughter will be singing in a choral concert and I know she wanted to have me hear it.
I have to make arrangements to have a pet sitter come and take care of my kitties while I will be gone (about 5 days). Whoever I get to do that has to be comfortable giving a cat his morning insulin and giving the other one his prednizone ear rub as well. I will be checking with the vet tomorrow morning to see if the lady I had years ago watch them is still in the business. If not, who they might advise me of. As soon as that is secure, I will book the flight.
We are supposed to get another Winter Storm through the area tomorrow.... I bet the Scout Committee meeting will get cancelled again.
OK, catch you all later!
Good Evening All,
A nice glass of Cab Sav would do me a treat just now. I ache all over tonight. Steven I wish I remembered more of my knowledge but I guess first things first I would check the filter in the trans sump. From dim memory, third is the hydraulic engagement of the planetary gears , first and second are dependent on the bands on the outside of the planetaries. Does the truck have a fault indicator? Did it come on? If it has an obd port, do you have access to an OBD scanner? If so plug that in and see if the tranny threw a code. Funny I would have sworn this was a model train site.. Watching the UConn women play South Carolina tonight so no layout time.
Finished up the back of the trailer today cutting out the rusted areas and welding in new diamond plate. Supposed to get s**w rain and ice tomorrow so we'll see how it goes. May turn into a good layout day. Right now I'm concentrating on the service bits for the yard - water spouts, sanding tower, fueling station, maybe a coaling tower. Finally decided to put it all on the entry throat to the turntable and yard which puts it all away from the yard where it is probably easier to damage stuff through handling. Maybe more prototypical as well. The back of the yard will have the caboose service track and I don't think I need an RIP track since there is both a small roundhouse and a back shop. Any ideas?
I'd forgotten Ulrich has had a couple of serious bouts with the horse spittle so I hope and pray he comes out the other side ok. Chow, J.R.
Ah - top of the page - treats on me folks.
