NWP SWPSo according to my sources UP 4141 and 1943 will be leading the Bush funeral train, supposedly they'll be running 70 miles an hour all the way.
My take on the average speed of the train is a little different:
4141's route will begin in Spring, Texas at 1pm and will travel 70 miles to College Station—a trip that will take roughly two and a half hours to complete, ending around 3:25pm.
I'm thinking closer to 28 miles per hour average. In light of the recent fatality near Denver, involving the UP 844 and remembering the deaths along the June 8, 1968 Bobby Kennedy funeral train, the UP will probably take great care in the operation of this particular move.
I posted a link to UP's media site in a previous reply here.
hon30critterTo all my American friends: I would like to take a moment to offer my sincere condolences on the passing of George HW Bush.
Thank you, Dave. It is reassuring to know that we have honorable neighbors among us.
Looks like I garnered "Top-O-The Page" ! Leave your dinner cheques with Flo and I'll take care of the tab!
Enjoyed the chat last night (this morning!) Ken! Hope you get your decoders tuned-up to your liking

Hi Ed. How you doing?
I tried to post to Jarrell's Show Me Something because I get a kick out of your Cabeese thing.

Hi, TF! Doing fine here and I hope you are doing well, too. Sorry that w**k has you all tied up.
I know what you mean about the internet acting whacky sometimes (more often than not, recently) Flickr has been having photo issues lately, too, and all over the internet things are acting bizarre.

Track fiddler never introduce a mushroom to water. It turns them into a nasty rubbery texture, repulsive in your mouth.
Fiddler, I have heard that many times, but I really prefer my mushrooms to be washed in water to rimse off the horse.... Ah, Sh--. ah, Po--, ah, Manure! Yeah, I know the stuff is serilized and such before the spores for the mushrooms are put in, but being a farm boy the thought of eating horse sh-- just doesn't appeal top me. I love mushrooms but always rinse them off prior to using them! Don't soak them in water though. That is what makes them tough....
My fitbit says I have walked over 15,000 steps today. I'm going to get to 16,000 before I turn into bed tonight. since i missed my 4 mile hike on monday, the week will be short several thousand steps so I want to do a bit more every day to make it up.
My son and my trip to Steamtown back when included a train trip to a working Ice House Museum near Moscow, PA. So tonight I put up some photos of the Ice House itself. Since we were there at the end of September, I think the ice house was empty. They said they had sold the last block of ice for that year to the local Rotary Club for it's picnic. Here is the Ice house and several photos of the inside too.
The ramp used to get the ice ionto the ice house. Horses are used to do the work pulling the 300 lb. blocks up the ramp.
The inside of the structure. Sawdust or straw is used to seperate the layers of ice so they don't freeze together.
Some of the tools used in sawing and getting the blocks into storage.
At the ice house they have a reefer car from the 1800's sitting near the Ice House. Cars like this were used to move the Ice sometimes all the way to Florida back when. after all them there Southern Gentlemen do need ice cubes for their drinks you know... The cars would then bring such delicacies as bananas up North so those of us here in the cold could enjoy some tropical fruit.....
When my son and I walked over the lawn and I first saw the Reefer, I when nuts! I started pointing at the car, jumping up and down and yelling, "Oh my God" "That car has Fox Trucks on it........!!!" My son said, "Daaaaaaddddd! Quiet down people think your nuts!" Actually folks were looking at me and most were moving away from the crazy guy...... Then the Ranger gave the portable mic to the Museum President who pointed at the trucks and said, "I don't really know much about this, but I've been told that the trucks on this car are very, very old and there are only a few of this particular type left in existance. The are called Fox Trucks." People looked at me, eyes wide open and started to move back closer to me. Some even asked how I knew that.... Anyway, here is the car.
And one showing the Fox Trucks on it.
I met an old man out at the R&GV Museum one day who told me his first job as a kid was working the iceing platform at a train yard. He said he was exhausted in the 90° heat after working several hours straight and when he thought his shift would be over, they brought in another train to ice. After a couple more hours, he collapsed from the heat and hard labor. Said he ended up in the hospital for about a week. The docs, were surprised he survived! I guess Manual Labour isn't just the president of Spain.....?
Hope you all have a great night!

Nice. Pets are, (our) best. I wonder if Broadway Lion likes Mr Wilson making his rounds by the Caboose
PS. That Caboose would make a nice ice fishing house. Heavy it is. Good ice fishing house it could be. If somebody had it in his means

You're welcome to move in any time, Ulrich . It has a nice wood stove that Petra can use for baking, too! You might have to share quarters with Ken, though. He's had his eye on the place for a while
Hope you get back to sleep soon.

It is actually built on two parallel beams that would skid right out onto the ice, TF. Remove the "hopper" and you'd have a nice cut-out in the floor
Ulrich
I think that could work for you. You would look good in it too
But on a more serious note. I wake up at 2:00- 3:00 in the morning every night like clockwork. I cannot afford losing my sleep. My stomach is upset without myself even realizing it. It took me many years to realize this. Usually it's simple, I take an antacid and fall right back to sleep like a baby. I hope that can help you. I don't believe in sleeping pills.
On a worse night I take a Benadryl Allergy pill, knocks me out for 4 hours. Perfect but I'm me and you are you. I'm just trying to be of some help. Insomnia sucks ! TF
I am looking forward to my Caboose Ice Fishing House here soon Ed.
I have many friends and they will be needing one too. Heads up, we may be talking cabeese here.
We are the crazy people in -10-20 F below zero in Minnesota during the average mid winter months. We like to go fish on frozen lakes. Send three or four, maybe five of those up here. All I got to do is give a shout and I got buyers for all of them for you. TF
PS. Actually it's not as funny as you think. If you had them I probably could sell them. You wouldn't believe the elaborate ice fishing houses they have up here. There were some unbelievable ones on the news just this morning.
The Lakes aren't even frozen and these crazy people are ready to wait for that while they sit on these elaborate big Ice Fishing houses.... Seriously, some of these fish houses cost more than the house I live in

Ice fishing can lead to some interesting consequences for those people who do not stop to think before going onto the ice. Many years ago on Frenchman's Bay at Pickering, Ontario there were quite a few folks enjoying a nice sunny day fishing on the ice. The problem was that they had all driven onto the ice and parked their cars, and even a motor home, just like they were in a regular parking lot, all neatly parked side by side and close together. The next day the Oshawa Times had a picture of the bay. In the middle of the bay was the roof of a motor home sticking a few inches above the now open water. The rest of the vehicles were sitting on the bottom of the lake!
Every year on Lake Simcoe just to the north of us a few hardy souls will venture out onto the ice long after the Provincial Police have declared it to be unsafe. Every year somebody get's stuck on an ice flow that has broken away from the shore after they went onto the ice. The police have a hovercraft expressly for rescuing these people. It happens that often!
Even better, not long ago on Lake Erie a group of fishermen had to use a couple of plywood sheets to get across the small gap where the ice had already broken loose. Unfortunately the wind changed to offshore and blew the ice out into the lake! Another rescue performed by our wonderful police!
I don't go ice fishing. I get into my hot tub instead.
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
YEP That's one of my favorites. I have both of those. I enjoyed watching the one you provided. Thanks for that.
Darn kids. That sums it up right there. We are all over-grown darn kids. Just look at us.... we're still playing with trains. And having fun I might add.
If I remember correctly on Grumpy Old Men 2 they did catch catfish hunter. A very big fish. They let him go for some reason and did make it to the wedding somewhat on time. I love the father. The old man that died on the couch by the lake so peacefully. I forgot his real name, He ate a pound of bacon every day and smoked camel straights all his life.
Thanks for that Refresher Ed. That was one of my favorite movies
Good stuff Dave. (Edit) as long as there was no one in the ice parking lot when she caved.
Stupid has always been what stupid does. I look around me everyday and just let it go.
You have the right idea. I will head to the hot tub too. Actually I don't have one right now. I will use my sauna and roll in the snow..... By the way, I'm getting a little short on walleye lately, Can you lend me a few
When I catch some more, probably springtime in your Province, I will get them back to you..... promise

Ray, those are some neat photos of the ice house and refrigerator car. I think I have one piece of rolling stock with Fox trucks, an old tank car. I just bought a book, the Great Yellow Fleet, which hasn't arrived yet. I'm looking forward to learning more about the refrigerator car history. I know many towns near ponds and lakes harvested ice during the winters. Must have been quite an undertaking.
Thanks for sharing that history.

Good morning, it sure came quick.
Time to go to wxxk soon. My wife is busy at the hotel this week. She has lots of hockey kids flown down from Canada. An expensive sport to say the least. They take their hockey very seriously.
The halls in the hotel are balconies that surround an eight story open court. She says it sounds like thunder when they run up and down the halls. Just to have a percentage of that energy again would be nice. She did mention they are a very polite group of kids.
Ray I've never seen trucks like that before. Those are really neat.
Yeah, I have an artist brush. I brush the dirt and whatever off the mushrooms before I cook them. I don't know, I guess I don't worry about it.
I seen a display at the Science in Museum in St Paul. A great big canning jar full of bugs and whatever else was in there. They say the average person consumes that in a year and doesn't even know it.
Dave I thought Northerners were smarter than that. Every few years the rivers emptying into the Chesapeake Bay freeze and somebody decides to take their car out on the ice. It usually works out poorly for the car.
Count me in on the 2-3 am night owls. Last night it was my hip hurting, or maybe it was my back making my hip hurt. Other nights, it's just a full bladder.
Spent yesterday messing around with DIY decals. Something didn't look quite right and finally I realized I had renamed the Potomac & Northern, the Northern & Potomac. Then I discovered my orange, ink jet ink, isn't very orange when placed on a black loco shell. It was only a test piece, but it was a complete failure. I took the decal off and the color was still there. I used enough clear spray.

Ed, nice pictures, did Atlas put that model out? Atlas put out a model of the dash 8-40c that led his 1992 campaign train. While in Wisconsin, the train was escorted by the WC. Somewhere I have pictures of the wife and kids standing next to the CSX business/observation car at the end of the train.

Good Afternoon, Folks!
A rather unpleasant day! It´s way too warm, wet & windy for the season! Normally the type of weather that would see me staying put inside the house, in front of a fire place with a nice fire going, but that we don´t have. So I got up and on the go and did all my Christmas mail, the few I do. It gets less and less every year.
Count me in on being a night owl. I usually go to bed ten-ish at night, only to wake up around 1am, woken up by the proverbial "old men´s disease" or my hurting back. Sometimes it is my heart trying to win the Capetown Races. It usually takes me 2 hours to have a chance of faliing asleep again, only to be woken up by our dreaded neighbor´s noisy kid, screaming and yelling. That brat is 4 years old now, but his parents fail to give him a minimum of education, let alone keep him quiet when other folks need their rest. That little devil has the linguistic abilty of a 1-year old, most of his communication is done by screaming in a high-pitched tone. Needless to say we could do without the entire family.
Good morning from a cold Sunshine State.
We visited some of the family in Alabama yesterday . Then drove to Destin FL. When we crossed the line into FL it was 34F . Going to Tampa tomorrow to see our son with his wife and baby boy.
We are in a high rise now next to the Gulf. Only a few people are walking on the beach with temperatures now in the forties.
I see some interesting conversations here In the Diner. No time to acknowledge all.
Steven NWP SWP. My understanding is the Bush 41 funeral train will travel 70 miles. I doubt it goes 70 mph.
Cheers!

Ulrich, What you are describing sounds a lot like autism. If so, the kid is likely not able to control the behavior at this point. I have had considerable experience with kids with various levels of autism. One just got Eagle Scout last Summer. His is not as serious a form as what you are descibing though. Just mentioning this to suggest you have some sympathy for your nieghbors who have to deal with it 24/7. My son's nephew has a very severe form of it and will have to be likely institutionalized at some point. His Mom and Grandmother are at the point where they can't control the kid when his meds wear off, and the grandmother is afraid of him. Have some sympathy my friend.....
Ray,
the little rascal has been diagnosed with ADHD and ASD, that´s Autism Spectrum Disorder. Unfortunately, his parents don´t take his disorders serious enough and he does not get any therapy. Help is not welcome at all. My sympathy is with the little fellow, but not with his parents.

Yep! Just from your desciption of him that's what it sounded like to me. I think the parents will soon rue not getting all the help they can. In a few years the kid may become dangerous to them and to himself. They are foolish not to avail themselves of all the help they can get in this situation!
howmusThey are foolish not to avail themselves of all the help they can get in this situation!
Dangerously irresponsible describes it a little better, I think. We offered our help, but were turned down in a very rude manner. Both parents prefer to play with their iPhones or watch stupid TV shows rather than take care of their child. I never heard any of them reading to him, or even talk to him. We did what we could in this case - inform Child Care and let them handle the situation. AFAIK, there is a court hearing scheduled for this month, initiated by the kid´s grandmother.
In a decaying society, cases like this are not uncommon.
Enough of this sad story!
Got some time to spare? Watch this video on the joys of railroading in Winter!
Good afternoon!
I took a Zyrtec pill last night, to stop my runny nose. I could barely get up in the morning. It likes to keep me out for ten hours, and I had to get up early because the cleaning ladies showed up.
I used to live in Concord, MA, where they still have an ice house. Nowadays, they sell dry ice, and maybe block ice, too. There's no evidence of a rail connection. One of my favorite bars runs a perpetual slide show, with a couple of old photos of ice harvesting on the Concord River.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
I don't like the "Autism Spectrum" thing. In our town, we've interacted with both high-functioning Asperger's kids and the ones who run around and can be very disruptive.
While the root cause may be the same, I disagree with lumping them all together in one classiication. Each one really needs individual attention and a different treatment plan, and any less does a disservice to both the patient and the rest of society.
I am with you, Mr. B.! If you look how sharply the figure of children having been diagnosed with the various forms of autism has risen in recent years, I have my doubts how sincere this diagnosis is. A lot of those kids may just temporarily a little bit "too difficult" or "too agile" or simply lack the parental attention they deserve. In my younger days I was a head-strong, impatient character who would probably have fallen under the labels they give these days for children who develop an own, strong will at an early age.
Mr. Beasley and Ulrich, it's sort of like the disease we call cancer. There are over 100 different types of diseases that are called cancer..... They are all treated differently to be appropriate for the kind of "Cancer". Autism Spectrum Disorder is a group of developmental disorders that fall under the same umbrella.
From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
"Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication and behavioral challenges. There is often nothing about how people with ASD look that sets them apart from other people, but people with ASD may communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different from most other people. The learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities of people with ASD can range from gifted to severely challenged. Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives; others need less.
A diagnosis of ASD now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately: autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome. These conditions are now all called autism spectrum disorder."
Reason for so many more kids being diagnosed? We now know a whole lot more about the causes and conditions surounding the disorder. Yes, just like not all cancers are treated the same way, Autism Spectrum kids need to have individual programs of help which they do recieve when they are being treated by a qualified professional. How do I know anything about this? I was trained in the disorders way back when, as a Music Teacher, I had kids in my classroom who needed special help to be successful, and I have now been working with a Handicapped Boy Scout Troop program for about a decade. This is an area where there is still way too much igorance out there!
In New York State at least, every child diagnosed with ASD has an IEP (Individual Educational Program). As a Music Teacher, State law said I had to be given the IEP for every student that had one. In my local District the Committee on the Handicapped wouldn't let me access the IEPs because they said I wasn't trained in how to read them. I actually had to threaten to sue the district over that in order for them to make them available. I was not a popular person there at that point, but I did finally get the information that was given to all other teachers on those kids. My principal said I wouldn't dare to sue the school about it. He turned white as a sheet when I told him I had an appointment later that same day with my lawyer to start the proceedings! The IEP allowed me to have a better understanding about what the difficulties were for each child and be a better teacher for them. My insistance did help many of the "special" teachers to now be able to work with and teach those "problem kids" thrown into their classes.
'Nuff said!
