Good morning all,
Has it been that long since Jeffrey passed? my how time flies.
Garry you are heading to FLa at the right time. It appears a major Winter storm may hit us this weekend.
Pizza is the one thing I have not had in Chicago. It is hard when Mrs. MLC only eats veggies and not a lot of those. ( too many calories)
I like hole in the wall restraunts when ever I travel, they tend to have the best food and service.
Top of page food is on me!
Yes, Lake effect snow comes from the lake as described.... It is not dependent on a weather front.

cudaken Had a Train Day Planed, then Wife got in the way. Sigh Won't go into all the details but wife wants me to Buy her a wrench so she can open the front door! Whistling Yep I bet Acer Hardware will have that!
Buy the kind of door hnadle that looks like a lever. For a front door it may be more expensive, but maybe you can replace the handle witout replacing the innards.
I love that lkever type handle.
You can also buy a lever to fit on a door knob. It will work quite a pit like the wrence that she is asking for. Ask your locksmith about these things.
I remember having quite a few issues with door knobs not working during my time in the US. We don´t have them here - we still prefer old fashioned door hnadles (levers).
I just went on a trip down memory line by watching a video of a train trip from LA to Seattle onboard the Amtrak Coast Daylight train. I took this trip the other way around back in the Spring of 1974. It was a one in a lifetime experience for me. I rember the train being pulled by a E8 A+B set- The silverware in the dining car still had SP on the cutlery, but the menue was already "boiled down" to burgers and the like.
Fond memories!
Happy times!

I was going to offer up some Chicago-style deep dish pizza as today's lunch special, but then I remembered SeeYou190 is in Chicago; the rest of us are in eastern Pennsylvania. Speaking of which, did you know Chester County, Pa., just west of Philly, grows about half the nation's mushrooms? So today's lunch special is cream of mushroom soup. Enjoy!

Jimmy_Braum As of today, I'll officially be a homeowner
Congratulations Jimmy! Mortgage payments can be scary but they are better than paying rent. When you pay rent somebody else gets all the money. When you buy a house the money gives you equity in the house, which is just like putting money in the bank. Well, most of the time it is. Based on its current value my house has paid me 8.1% every year for 30 years, tax free, and that includes 10 years where the market value basically went nowhere.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Al's- That is the other one i was trying to remember- I was getting it mixed up with Zel's that was on the Indiana side. Ate some at the Al's on Western and found it excellent. They are not quite as spicy as some of the others. For pizza I always preferred Giordanos over Lou Malnatis especially when it came to sausage. Lou Malnatis put too much on- it was like they took a 1/2" slice through the entire pig. Down here in VA/ NC everything is New York style pizza. I did find a place down in Raleigh NC called Rosetti's that had Chicago style that was so good I thought it had a very close contest with Giodanos believe it or not.

Not to start a chip war but Nottingham, PA (right in the middle of mushroom country) is the home of Herr's Potato Chips. Also great.
Hello, Folks
Thanks for that mushroom soup, Steven! A very nice way to ward-off the chilly weather.
Another of my favorite treats from the Lancaster - Amish Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch area is Shoo Fly Pie —
Shoofly by Edmund, on Flickr
I like the taste of molasses. Sometimes I put a little on my oatmeal. Shoefly pie has several variants and I prefer one that is not too soggy and not too sweet.

Some folks top it with whipped cream but I have been known to have a scoop of vanilla or butter pecan ice cream on the side.
Have a pleasant evening, fellows...
Ed
Good evening diners.
Welcome (back) to PA!
Zoe - How about a bowl of vanilla ice cream and a couple of those big Snyders of Hanover Pretzels? Thanks. (Yes, pretzels and ice cream are good together. Don't laugh too hard.)
Seeyou190 - That was not bad lake effect snow... Being in the middle of the NWPA snowbelt, I can say what lake effect snow is. When it is snowing so hard you can't see 30 feet away, THAT is lake effect snow! (3-4 or more inches in an hour style!) That picture was just "snow produced by the lake" snow.
Ken - Maybe the new door lever would help? Hopefully the heater gets fixed soon so your trains and little people don't complain they are cold. Those poor little engineers ain't dressed for cold weather ops!
Welcome to the new ones.
Health front - Still no where close to 100% (even for me) but getting better. Scared both w*^k-places, due to a (big, but not huge for me) asthma attack, but am getting back to (my) normal, albeit slowly. The new meds are helping, but not quite where I would like yet.
Weather - Lake "enhanced" snow in the forecast. (Snow from a weather front that is also picking up moisture from the lake.) But only a few inches tops the next couple days combined. After that, maybe lake effect in full swing.
W*^k - Busy at the print center j*b, and decent at the other place as well.
I should get to my berth, as I start bright and early at the print center in the morning. (Start @8am, and have 35-40 minute drive to get there.)
Hope all have a good night!

Lucky guy! I wondered how it was that you had access to it but didn't own it yet. I guess I missed that part.
The last bit of our morgage was paid by my parents' estate so we got out of our mortgage earlier than I thought we would. Most of their money came from the land that my great, great, great, great grandfather pioneered starting in 1823.
I know you are doing a bunch of renovations. Doing that is a good investment too. We don't plan on moving until we have to go to a senior's home so hopefully most of the value in our home will go to our son.

Flo, give the gang and I a please.
Work Front By today standerds it was a good day with $1600.00 in sales and I made a around a extra $16.00.
Brother Elies Friend of mine suggested the samething. I did a search last night at Lowes using the keyword Door Knobs, not one shown. Hum, will try again using the keyword Door Handle and see what comes up? I still think it is a small sticking problem when the tempures changes and not the knob it self.
Rick Hope you start feeling better soon. Far as heat I am dealing with it, but hate to see this coming electric bill.

Evening folks,
So according to my sources UP 4141 and 1943 will be leading the Bush funeral train, supposedly they'll be running 70 miles an hour all the way.
I'm trying to convince my parents to maybe make the 5 hour drive to Texas to see it.
Well not much else going on.

If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!
Good Morning!
It´s a cold but bright day. We are enjoying the brightness, which unfortunately won´t last long - according to our weather guessers, we will have the usual grey and wet weather coming back by tomorrow.
Right in front of the house we live in, there is a huge fir tree - a former Christmas tree that someone must have transplanted from his living room after the season ended about 15 years ago. The neighborhood used to decorate it for Christmas, but before we could get to it for this season, our landlord decided to have it chopped. The picture shows the sad remnants early this morning.
I don´t understand why he did it! There is none around who could possibly be offended by a Christmas tree. But what to expect in a country, where traditional Christmas markets are being renamed "Winter Markets" to avoid offending those whom we didn´t invite, but nevertheless came.
It just makes me sad.
On a lighter note - we all know Swiss cheese, but do you know Swiss steam?
Switzerland never had "big" steam engines for passenger services. The class A 3/5, a thrifty Tenwheeler, was about the strongest built. It required three, sometimes even four of them to pull an express train up the grades of the Gotthard line. This raises the question why they never built stronger steam engines. There is a simple answer to that. Switzerland relied on coal imports, mainly from France and Germany, which were shut off during WW I. In order to become independant from imported coal, electrification started quite early, making use of the natural resources Switzerland has in abundance - water power. By the early 1930s, all mainlines were electrified and there was simply no need for bigger steam engines.
Enjoy the video!

Another thing that I find terribly disappointing, I experienced last weekend. My daughter and I were bell ringing for the Salvation Army in front of a Walmart and I was absolutely amazed at the number of people who wanted to pretend we didn't exist. I don't care if you give or not, many people can't afford to, and seriously, how many Salvation Army stations does a person walk by during the holidays? You can't give to all of them. Anyway, we were being cheerful, smiling, and greeting/thanking people as they came by or donated. Still the number of people that would purposely ignore us was astounding. I even managed to catch several people leering at us whom I would great with a cheerful "Good morning!" and they would quickly look away. Further, I can't say our experience was an anomoly. The same thing has happened in each of the past years we have volunteered for this.
Enough melancholy. It's the holiday season!

Not for nothing, but Nottingham was a station on the PRR's Octororo Branch. Twice weekly train MD 47/48 ran from Chester, PA to Rising Sun MD, serving the agriculture industry. One of the main traffic sources were gondolas of horse manure delivered to the Public Carload Delivery tracks at Avondale, PA.
Herrs and Utz are both great chips.

One of the youtube webcam channels is putting on a special tomorrow on the Bush Funeral train.
"Thursday afternoon, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM Eastern. This is not a pre-existing cam location, but rather a special new live stream from on board the train itself, plus trackside views and commentary." Virtual Railfan I don't really understand how they have enough people sign up for their premium service to pay for all their cameras and streaming.
My missing VO1000 turned up in a file cabinet. Moved it to keep the house cleaner from touching it. I'm patching out the Southern Pacific and putting on Northern Potomac decals.

Ulrich,
I can't help thinking someone needed a Christmas tree, and cut off what would fit in their space. Maybe Clark Griswold has moved in nearby, and needed a coffin - I mean tree!

To all my American friends:
I would like to take a moment to offer my sincere condolences on the passing of George HW Bush. I just read some of the eulogies and they reminded me of what a tremendous leader and man he was.

Looks good to me. I would take a spoon full of that so fast your head would spin. Did you make that Steve O?
I used to hate mushrooms as a child and a better part of my life. That's because I was used to mushrooms served to me out of the can. That is just wrong. Famous World chefs will tell you, only use fresh mushrooms, at that point never introduce a mushroom to water. It turns them into a nasty rubbery texture, repulsive in your mouth. You saute them in butter with other 5-star ingredients and introduce them to your dish later. Or just the recipe of mushrooms sauteed alone. They are so good you can eat a whole bowl full of them and wish for more. They shrink quite a bit preparing them. There's never enough.
I had five mushroom haters that also hated them because of the above-described. I won these five people over to liking mushrooms just like I did when I found out how to prepare them correctly from a recipe of a great chef I know.
As far as the pizza thing. I used to go to Chicago once a year. If Kevin, SeeYou190 is still there, Kevin go to Gino's Pizza. Not affiliated with Jeno's of Duluth. The deep dish is so good. Every year I went, I ate so much I could not go out that night. IT IS THAT GOOD! They had three pizzerias the last time I was there. You are welcomed to stand on the table and put graffiti on the wall wherever you see fit while you are eating there. That's the way it was the last time I ate there. I would assume Gino's still exists in Chicago. A place that good doesn't just go away.
I haven't been posting very much at all lately. I have nothing to show on the railroad front because I've been so busy with work. That should be something not to complain about as in winter contractors generally run out of work for a while. Personally as I'm getting older, I enjoy those winter lols.... Now it's just the mad work rush before Christmas.
I think I will start a thread in the next day or two and try to make it fun.... Jump back in the game a little bit so to speak.
I kind of miss you guys
