Happy New Year! What a great few days of college football. I do love bowl games.
Music? Wow, where do I start? Everything classical from Bach to Philip Glass. Movie scores from Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, John Williams, to name a few. Imagine Dragons, Nine Inch Nails, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Rush, Genesis, REO Speedwagon, Muse, Natalie Merchant, Simon and Garfunkel, Brian Setzer, Milk Carton Kids, Louie Prima, Daft Punk, Sufjan Stevens, and the list goes on and on (and on...). I love my Apple Music subscription. It plays at least 8-10 hours every day.
It seems that every Christmas season I get sick. It starts with my asthma acting up and deteriorates from there. This year is no exception. My eyelids feel hot; a precursor to the fever. Plus we still have the grandkids here until Thursday. Whoopie.

I see there isn't a Show Me Something thread for this month any objections to me posting it?

If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!
Good evening all.
Steven (SWP) - I thought you did well on moving the diner. It's just that some are set in doing things certain ways, and JaBear just is grumpy in his old age, don't let that bug you.
JaBear - You forgot to quote the part where I asked if anyone had any other tips or points I missed....
But it's ok, I like to tease and joke, so they get to tease and joke right back. (If you can dish it out, you should be able to take it back, right?)
And, I hope you didn't take any offense over my calling you a grumpy old man. After all, I'm just a smart mouthed young whipper-snapper at (almost) 32.
Music discussion - Uptown funk I have heard, can't stand shake it off though. Meghan Trainor I have heard a couple of songs for, but none are fav's for me. I will have to say my current "listen to" is "Marry Me" by Thomas Rhett. (Those who know, will realize this is not the same song as the popular "Marry Me" by Train. The Train version works much better for a first dance song than the Thomas Rhett version would!) My taste in music is quite varied, but majority is Country, from the "Real Country" of pre-1990ish, to modern country. I also like some pop, rock, classic rock, and some R&B. Everyone from the aforementioned Train to George Straight, to Elvis, and some that are less famous, but had hits. (Anyone heard of The Wonders? They were a band from Erie Pa, years ago, who only had a couple hits. I have several bands like that on my playlist.)
Like another post, I can't stand Rap, metal, and never got into opera, big hair bands, or alternative.
Last concert I attended was by The Bellamy Brothers.
Weather - Snowing, and cold. (What else is new?!?)
W*^k - Decent day Saturday, lackluster today.
Hope all are well, and all enjoy the night!

up831I doubt anyone cares about this, but you can often tell whether a song was written on guitar or piano just by how the song is structured.
.
In his biography, Eddie Van Halen stated that everything he wrote for guitar was actually composed on his piano.

Good evening Diners,
Brunhilda, may I have an extra large coffee with lots of cream before your shift ends, please.
What would be a shorter list for music is what I don't listen to. I've never been able to get behind opera. I just never cared for it. But, I would prefer that to "metal." Funny thing about metal, when I played some of it back in old cover bands, it always left a bad taste in my mouth, for lack of a better word. Nowadays, I won't listen to anything of that genre newer than ac/dc or the Scorpions, and I can only take a song or two from them. The remaining type of "music" I flat will not listen to is "Rap" and it's brother "hip hop."
My Pandora stations are classical, classical piano, classical guitar, Flamenco, which I love. Can't play it, but I love it. Then Hawaiian and Celtic. I've since added British Invasion and surf Music. Those are most enjoyed in shuffle mode.
i don't think there's a pattern there other than heavily guitar based music. I doubt anyone cares about this, but you can often tell whether a song was written on guitar or piano just by how the song is structured.
Well, I could go on for hours, but I'm sure I've already bored everyone.
Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Hello, Everyone! And a joyous and happy New Year.
We had a great time with a visit from my nephew and his girlfriend. They are both railroaders .
They brought dinner and beverages last night and we spent the evening in a celebratory mood.
This morning, well, OK — it was actually afternoon, when they awoke it was off to the layout to run trains! An enjoyable time was had by all.
They brought me a gift of a beautiful Audio-Technica turntable! This thing weighs a ton. Wired her up today and played some LPs. Nice
I've been filling the bird feeders every day. With over a foot of the white stuff the birds are scampering in search of food. The suet cakes only last a day-or-so, too.
Thanks for moving the Diner, Steven. I have travelled west by train but never across Tehachapi, it was always via Moffat Tunnel.
Happy New Year to All!
Regards, Ed
howmus Ahhhhhh (shakes head and groans....) Very Punny, Brother Lion, very punny!
Ahhhhhh (shakes head and groans....) Very Punny, Brother Lion, very punny!
I would agree with that sentiment. Apparently, I'm not the only punny person here. On that subject: Why did the ice swear out a criminal complaint at the police station? He was the victim of a salt assault! (And yes, at the moment I don't think anyone here would convict the person who committed that crime.)
I, myself, have a little bit of everything in my music mix. As I tell people, my music range goes from BIllie Holiday to Ziggy Marley. For me, I usually go by songs rather than by artist. (The group 3 Doors Down is an exception to that rule.)
Weather: As on me typing this it all of a bone-chillling -14. (That is not the windchill either. that is -32.)
Hobby Front: With it being a new month (and the fact I had some available funds), I decided to order a couple more things. The needed control boxes, the cork sheets (for both the extension and the railyard) and the crossing needed to have the car shop track cross the yard ladder.

Glad to see the puppy rail in the whelping nest, not many know about that. I also used T.E. Scotts heated puppy bowl, I have known pups being lost to cold temperatures. That is a fine looking litter.
Dorsey Brothers, Bing Crosby, Lead Belley, Perry Como, Les Brown, Guy Lombardo, were a few of my favorites, along with Les Paul and Mary Ford, Skeeter Davis, and Hank Williams.

As most of us are of an age that if we don't die fairly soon, we are going to be buried on suspicion--the format has a great deal of meaning to many of us, developed over a period of time, and in many cases the result of relationships built between the members here. You are not expected to know these things--should uncertainty arise, just ask for guidence, it will kindly be given. Mr. Bear comes from a society that is very direct, and there are those things that mean a great deal to him. Again, you, at this point in time, do not know these things. Stick with it and you will, it is not a bad ride.
Ponder this, At my age I know what it is to be young, as yet, you do not know what it is to get old.

Afternoon Diners,
The only modern music I listen to is Taylor Swift. A year or two ago.
Happy New Year's Day everyday.

Afternoon folks!
Hi Chloe! Oh, nothing right now for me, I am about to pack up yet another Dish of my famous winter squash for the New years Day Dinner at my son's house, put on by his MIL....
You young kids don't seem to know, you have to be an old guy (like me) to have heard the best bands. Two of my favorites were BS&T (went to college with Lou Solof the lead trumpet player), and Chuck Mangione's band (He was the director of the Eastman Jazz Ensemble back then). Used to sit and chat with him in the main hallway at Eastman when he would be there. Personally I used to like the classics.... You know, J. S. Bach, Mozart, Buxtehuda, Brahms.... Those guys. Just remember, Brahms spelled backward, Smharb...
Have a good one out there!

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010
I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017
Oh I know that second one, wait no I'm thinking Uptown Girl!
Never heard of either!
In the words of the song "Old Time Rock 'n' Roll" "today's music ain't got the same soul"
Now I do know all the words to The Longest Time, or Moon River, or Love Story, or This Night
Newest songs I listen to is those off the album River Of Dreams which is 25 years old...
I don't know new music nor do I care to...
Good morning and "HAPPY NEW YEAR" from the West Coast. It's -3c with a red sky, so maybe some more snow on the way.
Well, Mom made it to 2018 and these started popping out at 0230hrs. The wife not only has the flu but has now thrown her back out in the process. I will be on puppy watch today so the wife can rest. The trains are just through the door from the family room so they will run while I go back and forth to keep an eye on things.
Just remembered I have to take #1 daughter to riding lessons. Three hours in the cold is not as easy as it use to be for me.
Always like to play Gordon Lightfoot's "song for a winters night" when it is snowing out. Found this version from 1967. Gords lyrics always put you there even 51 years later.
Happy New Year Ulrich.

NWP SWPKevin, I have heard those artists names, can't name a single song though!
Oh come on now... I am sure you know EVERY word to Shake It Off and Uptown Funk. You would need to live under the biggest boulder on earth in the smallest cave ever inhabited not to.
JaBear, have a drink and calm down... The complaint department is on the fourth floor...
Kevin, I have heard those artists names, can't name a single song though!
Good morning Diners,
Brunhilda, I'll have an extra large coffee with lots of cream, please.
It's 10 below zero Farenheit here. Actual, not wind chill. I don't care what anyone says, that is cold. Might as well be in Winnepeg or Yellowknife at this rate.
Having morning coffee while waiting for the parade to start. I've probably said this before, but the Rose Parade needs to be seen live to be appreciated. MOH and I camped out on the parade route a couple of times. It was a lot of of fun,......then! After our son was born, he was about 5 months old on NYE, we wrapped him in a "snuggly," wrapped my coat around both of us, and the three of us started at Colorado and Sierra Madre and walked the entire parade route to the Wriggly Mansion on Orange Grove and back. It was approximately 12 miles. On NYE, the parade route is a 6 mile long party! Good memories!
Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone isOK, safe, and warm.

NWP SWPI've been told that I am an "Old Soul" mostly because I could'nt name a top 100 artist of the past 20 years! If not longer! Newest music I listen to is Billy Joel... I'm a little behind the times...
When I was in High school, in 1982, in Cape Coral, FL (retirement community), I listened to Frank Sinatra, Brenda Lee, The Beatles, Elvis, and Louis Prima.
Now, I really love Bruno Mars, Shawn Mendes, Taylor Swift, and Meghan Trainor.
It just took me a while to catch up!
It is so cold at the zoo that the hippopotamus got frostbite and lost an ear. While the zookeeper was dealing with this one of the lions got out an killed a wildebeest. Our resourceful zookeeper was able to save an ear from the dying wildebeest and graft this onto his ailing hippopotamus. So let me be the first to say HIPPO GNU EAR!ROAR

Top of the morning ladies and gents. A fresh cup of coffee please.
New Years Eve was uneventful, spent most of it working due to the cold. One of my plowing contracts requires clear roads and walkways, and even though it's not snowing at ten below, the wind has been drifting banks terribly.
The cold has gelled up most of our equipment. Two loaders, the plowing skidsteer and the skodsteer with bucket are all dead. The two tractors arent far behind as they started having issues with fuel yesterday too. The steady winds have made it the equivalent of negative twenty or below. Even running Kerosene mixed into our fuel isn't helping. Gotta set up a shelter and some portable heaters today as the temp is supposed to rise up to one degree. A heat wave!
Time to get ready and go start the trucks.
NWP SWP Also I did post the RIP Track and the rules...
Yeah, but if you're going to do the job, at least try to do it properly!!
