Evenin' folks!

Cold enough for ya?  Janie, I could use a plate of the hot chicken wings and a trip to the salad bar as well as a pot of very hot decaf to keep my FGLK Mug warm for a while....

Enjoyed the posts on the cold right above mine.....

Here in the Finger Lakes, it has been a fairly nice day out.  The thermo meter actually got all the way up to 20°F early this afternoon.  I used the "Heat Wave" to go down to the Credit Union and then head over to the Grocery Store as I hadn't gotten this weeks groceries yet and the week is almost over.  Tonight, Grayson will be hitting the area with some sn*w, low temps, and lots of wind....  The weather channell says: "Blustery with snow showers. Low 1F. Winds WNW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 60%. Snow accumulating 1 to 3 inches. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph."  Wind chills will be from -20°F to -30°F at times.  We still will have it mild compared to a lot of places.  Hey this is good Scout Winter Camping weather!  I have spent a weekend camping in a tent out on Cuba Lake in Western, NY with the temp at -10°F and a wind chill of -30°F.  Let me tell you you can wait quite a while before finally getting out of the sleeping bag to visit the little facility up on the bank when it is like that!!!

Stay Safe and warm out there!

riogrande5761,

And here on the Island, when it hits 600 below, the winter shrimp fishermen say, " Some balmy, ain't it"?

My wife is from South Shields England which is just south of the border of Scotland.  She confirms the Scots have the coldest weather, worse than Canada:

Scottish Weather

40 degrees-Californians shiver uncontrollably.
People in Scotland sunbathe.

35 degrees-Italian cars won't start.
People in Scotland drive with the windows down.

20 degrees-Floridians wear coats, gloves, and wool hats.
People in Scotland throw on a T-shirt.

15 degrees-Californians begin to evacuate the state.
People in Scotland go swimming.

Zero degrees-New York landlords finally turn up the heat.
People in Scotland have the last bbq before it gets cold.

10 degrees below zero-People in Miami cease to exist.
People in Scotland lick flagpoles.

20 degrees below zero-Californians fly away to Mexico.
People in Scotland throw on a light jacket.

80 degrees below zero-Polar bears begin to evacuate the Arctic.
Scottish Boy Scouts postpone "Winter Survival" classes until it gets
cold enough.

100 degrees below zero-Santa Claus abandons the North Pole.
People in Scotland pull down their ear flaps.

173 degrees below zero-Ethyl alcohol freezes.
People in Scotland get frustrated when they can't thaw their kegs.

297 degrees below zero-Microbial life start to disappear.
Scottish cows complain of farmers with cold hands.

460 degrees below zero-ALL atomic motion stops.
People in Scotland start saying "chilly, you cald an aw?"

500 degrees below zero-Hell freezes over.
Scottish people support England in World Cup!!!!

My two favorite OK GO videos are the one with the treadmills and the one with the motorized unicycles.

.

Unfortunately I cannot recall the names of either song right now.

unicyle one was I won't Let You Down, shot double speed with a drone, in Japan.

I don't remeber what the treadmill one was. Edit "Here it goes again"

Good morning from the West Coast. It is 2c with a high overcast.

I really feel for you guys freezing back East, I am sure glad Dad took a transfer out to Vancouver from Winnipeg in 1959. Came out on the Canadian in a Roomette complete with my Sisters budgie bird. I don't know how my fellow old geezers stand the cold back East. Vancouver, Victoria and White Rock are old geezer central as far as retirement in Canada goes. Rarely does it hit freezing and /or snow.  It is also way closer to Hawaii with cheap flights.

A little tune for my one time fellow Manitobians and all those also freezing.

Thanks for the comments on the pups, they are growing quite fast and motoring around the whelping box at a good rate.

Just finished submitting a claim to the city for the flood backup. We should get about $6500.00 to cover our plumber, deductibles and loss of our no claims discount. Our contents loss is in the $1000s and we haven't even started on that part yet. We are going to be way ahead at any rate. That being said I would have rather avoided the experience.

Lovin all the music being brought up, it brings back memories and I have been listening to a lot of old stuff that I have not heard in years. Music was always a huge part of my life. My mother taught piano, organ, and voice and sang on the CBC more than a few times. She also had prominent roles in opera's that came to town and always had the lead roles in some of the local amateur shows. She also sang solos or played the organ at funerals for some well known high profile people.

Well, I have to take my Daughters and my Passports in for renewal. I left it a little late and it always makes me nervous not being able to travel on short notice. If a family member needed help in a hurry I want to be able to hop on a plane and go. My Daughter travels with the school on things like battlefield tours in Europe and such, so she definitely needs hers.

All the best to all and stay safe in this cold.

I saw OK GO at the House Of Blues in Disney Springs (It was Downtown Disney back then) about 6 or 7 years ago. Great show. The crowd interraction during Here It Goes Again was wonderful. I think Motion City Soundtrack headlined the show.

Good afternoon Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have an extra large coffee with lots of cream, please.

Well, we're still in the deep freeze here, but then it's winter in Chicago so that's kind of a,"duh!"  Waiting with eager anticipation for April!

Ray:  If you like ELP, you may like some of Keith Emerson's earlier work with The Nice.  Just don't expect Greg Lake quality vocals.

SteveO:  Those plastic buckets in the video, I couldn't help but think of the red plastic bucket style hats that Devo used to wear.  Does this mean plastic buckets indicate an "art" band?

Not too much going on here, just trying to stay warm.  Certainly nothing to report MRR wise.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

SteveO,

I always likes that OK Video, except whoever their recording engineer was had never heard of distortion. The audio is recorded way too loud. I like the Rube Goldberg video ( This too Shall Pass)

My wife has been pushing to move, which is something we finally did late last year. I tore down my 10x18' layout last summer and we spent the summer getting the townhouse ready to sell and managed to find a stand alone home further west of DC in a small town - longer commute but nice and quiet - closed on Nov 22.  It was a bank owned home - the bank fully painted the interior and installed all new carpet but it needs a lot of work still.  There was no washer or dryer and kitchen appliances were old/original from 2005.  Countertops laminate peeling away, faucet shot etc.  Basement failed radon. Hot water heater end of life.

We bought all new applicances (fridge, microwave, diswasher, range, washer and dryer) on sale from Home Depot.  It took Home Depot's service Seven (7) visits or attempts to finally get everything fully installed.  Nightmare.  Have installed a Radon mitigation system and new hot water heater, blinds in sun room and dining/living room.  Bathrooms were decent but still need some rehab.  The big things left to do are new kitchen counter tops, sink, faucet and disposal and hard wood floors need refinished.

The basement is unfinished but framed so have a head-start.  Need to get get the rest of that going before a layout can start going in so will be summer or fall before layout construction probably.  Fun fun.

The winter weather bomb hit in the Washington DC over night.  Most of my co-workers are working from home today - wusses!  I drove in and the roads were a bit wet and slushy but not bad at all between Manassas and Alexandria VA - west of Manassas roads clear and dry.  All the schools were closed today which is typical of this area.  I think we got 1/2 to maybe 1 inch snow max?  SMH.  In Syracuse NY where I used to live, all the schools would be open still but everyone around here are afraid of their own shadows, let along a few snow flakes.

Though there is some overlap between the two genres -- Mumford & Sons shows up quite frequently on some of the indie playlists we listen to

My wifes son (23) is into Mumford & Sons too, and we've also listened a bit - they are interesting being Brits who are playing to a quasi American Country/Blue Grass fusion sort of style.  Something you don't see much from England, my wife's native home.

Agreed. I love Florence + The Machine (along with every other band you listed). I think there are always talented musicians, sometimes you just have to look a little. I am listening to Birdy right now, another great artist. Do you also listen to the “Folk Pop” genre, e.g. Mumford and Sons, The Avett Brothers?

Though there is some overlap between the two genres -- Mumford & Sons shows up quite frequently on some of the indie playlists we listen to -- I don't specifically seek out those artists. Too many of them shade off into endless banjo noodling and stoned-sounding mumbles for lyrics for my taste. And my wife objects to what she calls "twangy" music, a characteristic that most often but not always describes country. My tastes in indie shade more toward the electronic side than acoustic, like OK Go. Here's one of their amazing early videos; dog lovers, pay attention.

So I am going to try it. I think the cold cold cold made the wax shrink.

Eventually, the wax does deteriate.  I replaced our old toilets with the newer "efficient" types.  Both used the waxless ring.  No problems so far, and I'm in WI.

Just as with replacing the wax ring, be carefull tightening the toilet back down, and do it evenly on both sides to avoid cracking the toilet base.

The deep freeze continues in WI.

Glued water lines? What are you repairing?

The new waxless seals are okay. I'm not a fan, though. The wax rings are much more forgiving in terms of floor and flange not being perfect...

good 8 degree morning.

Well I was in the basement last night putting away Christamas decorations, when out of the corner of my eye I spied a drip. It seems the toilet wax ring has given way and today I get to pull up and replace it. Co-worker said use this new fangled no wax ring kit. So I am going to try it. I think the cold cold cold made the wax shrink.

I do not like plumbing but I can do it.

Have you ever heard of Django Rhiendhart (sp) ? Try finding some of his jazz recordings. . .

FWIW, I just did a search in Apple Music and came up with about 300 albums when I searched for the artist "Django Reinhardt."

I do have my favorites as well, when I comes to music.

I play guitar, so logically, I love a lot of 1970s driven rock music, qnd I can play a variety of iT.

I recently did a tribute on Facebook live to the dearly departed Tom Petty (RIP). But my musical influence starts with "The Boss". The it goes to Seger, Mellencamp,Fogerty,Neil Young, etc  remember, I'm 26.  Good music never dies.

among my recent artists  are Brian Fallon.. a mix of Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Tom Waits, and Joe Strummer, Mumford and sons before they went electric(sounds like thr old Dylan saying),Frank Turner is pretty good, and  Brad Paisley...excellent guitar player, and he grew up fairly close to me lol. Well another state, but only about a 1.5 hour drive.

Ohter than that, not much to write, got pleasure out of the new staked washer/dryer in  the kitchen. i didn't know I was buying a music box when I bought it. It sings songs and plays a tune when done wahshing and when you open the door, same with the dryer!!! Its aobut a 45 second tune it plays.....

Ha! Glad it's not only you, Galaxy! Some of you remember my dryer escapades from a few weeks ago. I had to make some repairs on a Samsung dryer that we "inherited".

My hobby work room is near the laundry room and one night I thought the angels were coming for me Angel Angel Angel

It took a while but I finally figured out that it was the new dryer playing a tune like some of those fancy Hallmark greeting cards play!

I believe the tune it plays is "March of the VolunteersWhistling

Speaking of YouTube music... I got hooked on this little ditty a while back.

I Love the Hammond B3.

Cheers, Everybody! Ed

we find we quite like modern indie music. Imagine Dragons

I happen to like quite a bit of Imagine Dragons myself. I recorded ABC's New Year's Eve program specifically to see Imagine Dragons' peformance.

Hobby Front: Got all the items that I was expecting on Tuesday. However, I found that the two overhead crane kits are not long enough to span the needed distance. I think I will need to do some planning on how to build the overhead crane to the right size. (In any event, I think some styrene will be on the order list.)

Additionally, a trip to the hardware store is in order to get some electrical pieces:  connectors for the Peco switch machines and spades for the control boxes. They will be needed in order to wire up the machines. (And I will get to tell the store employees that I am looking for things for my railroad. If I am looking for something strange, they presume it's for my railroad.)

The remaining type of "music" I flat will not listen to is "Rap" and it's brother "hip hop."

My Pandora stations are classical, classical piano, classical guitar, Flamenco, which I love.  Can't play it, but I love it. Then Hawaiian and Celtic.  I've since added British Invasion and surf Music.  Those are most enjoyed in shuffle mode.

First off, "Should Auld Acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind, Should Auld acquitance be forgot and days of auld lang syne....we'll tak a cup o cheer my friend for days of auld lang syne......"

HAPPY 2018! May it be healthy, prosperous, happy in that order.....

Up: you and I share teh same taste in some music. I too, cannot tollerate Rap or Hip Hop rebop {as I call it}, ofgten too much swearing in a lot of new music.

Second, UP, I have Hawaiian Music {Love love Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu, and Keali'i Reichel} and Celtic on my pandora..that includes Irish tunes, Celtic and Scottish Bagpipe music on my Pandora. Also oldies but goodies.

I also listen a lot to YouTube music. I like I can select and save it to groups provately, for listening to later. I guess yhou ahve to pay to listen to your groups exclusively and Im Not about to pay for free music.

I like Elvis Duran in the Mornign, but he may be too risque for some of you, there isn't a topic he won't touch. He's syndicated all over the coutnry on I Heart Radio from the city. After he is off, I go to PBS clasical music and news.

On to other things...yes I am at work, adn it sucks KENS rail spikes. It really burns my coal that I got cut back to just 8 hours from my desired 24. I have put in applications for jobs all over, and hope i get a bite. I even applied at ALdIs, as their starting pay is well above minimum, which is what I'm at now.

My van is in need of new brake lines, to the tune of $400, whcih I ahve, but won't have any money to pay other bills. Oops - Sign Whistling Tongue Tied. I'll have to tell you of the comedy of errors on New Yeras Eve. We took my FIL out to dinner at the Tavern. MY OH put the breaks on, and they froze with broken lines {thats what I need, new brake lines}. Called my repair shop/towing service who operates "24/7". Bah on that!"it's new years eve, my guys have gone home, you;ll have to call someone else"...Meh. Called the KiA roadside service. They called for towing IF I ahd a card to charge it to. I have cash I said {just sold the old washer adn had $150 in my pocket, tow was $83.00}. They said I'd have to call someone and wouldn't give me any numbers to call...I have no idea, I don't have a phone book in the van. My FIL gave me his card to use....We got a tow truck. I asked the tow truck driver who for a cab? with 3 of us he had no room in his truck.....He looked up a cab and called, explained he had a broken down vehicle,no heat, and an elderly getn in the vehicl, he needed a cab right away. They said "we don't have any available its New yEars Eve, finally got a cab. Took the cab to FIls house for him to drive us home. MY OH had his auto garage door opener, but it wouldn't work!!! AND FIl didn't have hsi house key!!!! I held the cab until we decided to go to our house. My Oh and I and FIl get out, MY OH asks "Do you have my keys"? I siad of course not, adn the outside battery operated key pad to our auto garage opener wouldn't work. WE tried to stop the cab, but he left. I unleoked MY OHs car with my key adn used My OHs auto garage door button. We ddin';t knwo but hoped MY Oh left keys {dropped} in the cab other wise no idea where THEY went..... To addinsult to injury the next morniing  I go to the repair place...I had given the only set we ahd for my van to the tow truck guy....The repair shop had no idea where the keys were. The tow guy LOCKED THEM inside teh van!!!! WIth no keys now, the repair shop called for a locksmith to come unlock the vehicle. I tols MY OH to call the cab company adn see if the keys were turned in. YES they were! {thank god}. then they can't repair replace the brake lines until the parts come in,,, 2 days, unless I wanted to pay $29 extra for expidited shipping, I siad I DON'T have it..... SO now FRiday, MAYBE I get my van back. whew.

FIL drove me to work. I'll never do that again. AT 89, he drives at 30 on  a busy parkway where the speed is 45, he starts braking 5 miles before teh red light or stop sign. He stutters his braking, jerking you. He doesn't know his way around, you have to give him constant directions. He uses his GPS a lot, but I guess it doens't work now, aND HIS car doesn't have it built in.

Well, on;u 10 check ins {C/I} tonight. Thats partly why I got cut back to just 8 hours, this week the 40 hour day girl gave me an extra shift so I'd have 16 hours, Thank you Becky!

Ohter than that, not much to write, got pleasure out of the new staked washer/dryer in  the kitchen. i didn't know I was buying a music box when I bought it. Good Afternoon,

I just got back from the gym so I'm feeling a little tired. It is part of my plan for the new year.

All this talk of music so I thought I had better put in my 2 cents worth. For many years I was a big fan of ELO.  I still listen to them but only rarely now. I seem to mostly listen to '50s rock now and also classical. For quite a few year my wife and I were 'into' opera. I have a couple dozen recordings but haven't listened to them for a few years. I still enjoy it but not as much as before. Opera is best live but our local company just isn't as good as it was in the '90s. As far as music to study by, I just never could stand to hear any sort of music when studying or indeed at work.

Keep warm,

CN Charlie

Hey everyone, hope all is well.  Sorry I've been away, just had some pressing issues in the world.

The open house for the club was canceled last Saturday due to this snowy weather, but we made up for it on Sunday.  In fact, one of the forum members showed up...Mr Ken Mason, all the way from Sunny New Orleans.  Sadly I was at work, so I missed meeting him.

I caved, and finally decided to do one of the green ex FURX Wheeling and Lake Erie units, afterall it was only a matter of time before I had to.

The work issues are still the same, but I'm taking steps to solve them.  Wish me luck in this area.

There's a train show in the New Eagle area at the end of the month, put on by the Mid Mon Valley Model Railroad Club and the New Eagle VFD.  We drew about 204 through the doors last year, so we can only hope to break it this year...feel free to pm me for more information.

I am honestly happy to announce, as of the NMRA page- Pittsburgh got the reigonal NMRA convention for 2020.

Ugh, this single digit weather and my asthma will be the death of me, I swear.

I found some free plywood, so hopefully I can start on my small temporary layout soon...

See ya later guys and girls.

Hello, Everyone!

Yes, agreed, sure is chilly. Glad we have a good stock of firewood and an excellent airtight stove. 0°F last night and no improvement in sight. Some kind of "Bombogenesis" coming. Don't remember ever having to deal with one of those before Whistling I was just recovering from the "Arctic Drool". Meterologists must have a big book of confusing terminology they can pick from to describe weather phenominon.

I keep some minimum heat going in the basement layout room. Electric baseboard. I figure the heat from the basement "percolates" up through the floor to heat upstairs so I'm justified in keeping it warm while I run trains Smile

Train Engine Question? Anyone here have a new BLI Pargon 3, RSD-15 or SD 7 engine and what do you think of it?

I have one Paragon 3 Diesel, Ken:

I use it for occasional switching around the coal mine yard. I tried the Rolling Thunder® sub-woofer and, honestly, you can do just as well by putting two tennis balls into a large cardboard box and tape it shut.

Turn the throttle up and then hold up the box and shake it with the tennis balls rattling around. There's your Rolling Thunder. Just my 2¢

The engine runs smooth but I'm not too big of a fan of BLI sound files. I like Loksound much better. Details are pretty decent and for a sound engine (reduced weight for the speaker/PC board) it pulls pretty well.

I bought it at the Broadway Refurbished Outlet so it was pretty much a good deal.

Keep WARM everyone!

Check in later, Ed

Afterrnoon folks!

Ah....  Emerson, Lake, and Palmer!!!  Now your getting to my kind of music!  Love their works.  Just doesn't sound right on the little itty bitty computer speakers though.  I'll have to turn on the nearfield monitors down in the train room and get out my copy and crank it up....  YES!

Flo, I'll have a Crown Royal Old Fashioned and a bowl of Fritos.

I don't stop by the Diner often, but I was passing by and heard ELP on the juke box.

My top 3?

3. Lucky Man

2. Still You Turn Me On

1. Karn Evil 9

Drinks are on me !

Sun is trying to shine here in the Finger Lakes today.  Now up to 22°F outside.  Looks like I'll be able to drive over to the Doc appt. on electrons.... Smile, Wink & Grin

Yep, I ask Alexa to play Lucky Man by Emerson Lake and Palmer, along with Crosby Stills and Nash, America, Chicago, Boston, Pink Floyd, Doobie Bros.

I was up from northern Virginia to Owego NY (west of Binghamton) last weekend for a visit.  It was Baltic as my wife would say.  Finger Lakes aren't far from there.  I must say, I don't miss NY State for a number of reasons, the winters being one of them!

My daughter suggested while I was up, to visit Steam Town.  Though it was cold, we there was enough to see inside that it was a fun visit - and though I've known about Steam Town for a long time, I never visited until last week.  I didn't realize there were so many Big Boys still in existance - one of them parked outside and paint badly peeling off.
