YGW:

I love board and batten construction! We did a small shed in the backyard last year:

I shouldn't say "we". I had someone do it for me.

This is real board and batten construction, not an overlay, not that there is anything wrong with the way you are doing things. I always thought that board and batten would be fairly simple to do but after studying this simple little shed I realized that there had been a lot of thought and planning put into it to make it all work. It's not just a bunch of the same sized boards nailed together.

I look forward to seeing your finished project. I didn't realize that you were planning on doing board and batten at first so I was admittedly kind of "ho hum, nice garage...". Now that I know how you are going to finish it I eagerly await it's completion!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

YGW's Weekend Update!

The Hobby Barn Odyssey...

Happy Easter Everyone!

Here is the lone photo submitted by YGW this week. As ACY Tom says, progress is still a step in the right direction, no matter how seemingly small it might be, it is STILL PROGRESS!

c/o Ed

Todays progress was less than it should have been. The cut man made a LOT of mistakes but nevertheless we installed all of the 4x9 sheathing on the front. We also trimmed out the two windows and installed some "batten" to get a sense of how it will look on the front.
We were also able to get six sheets on the left side.
This week I hope to get the " frieze board " on and some batten also.

YGW

Well, there you have it!
My hopes and prayers for the well-being of all of you are especially passionate at this time. It seems like many of us are having challenging and difficult times.
Best wishes to all,
Ed

Hello All. Just having an R.C before bed.

Herrinchoker: Your health comes first. Do what you have to do. Like you, I smoked in a past life, and I've probably been exposed to my share of really nasty stuff that could have serious consequences. So far I've dodged most of the worst bullets. So my only advice is to keep dodging.

Ulrich: I trust Petra is continuing to improve. Now take care of yourself. You can't be any help to her if you don't do that.

YGW: Progress on the hobby barn is progress. "Not much progress" is still something.

A long, long time ago I completed a Westerfield GN 50' boxcar kit. Not having proper airbrushing equipment, I let it sit unpainted in its box for a couple years. Just recently a friend painted it for me, so it's now ready to haul lumber from  the Pacific Northwest to customers in Ohio.

Today Samson and I drove up to the Everett RR in Hollidaysburg, PA to see their lovely little 2-6-0 number 11 hauling the kiddies on an Easter Egg run. It was a beautiful day for a drive. David Brightbill was a long-time Conductor on the East Broad Top tourist train, and an old friend. It was good to see him working on the Everett train crew.

Anybody having rabbit for dinner tomorrow?

Ken,

Upon entering the Black Hole of Calcutta, otherwise known as the garage, I located a can of DextronII. The can had been opened, but no problem, it had a cap that fit over the end. Upon picking up the can observation was made that the can was on the lite side--hum---can wasn't metal, was cardboard, with metal ends. Upon recollection, I placed the age of the can around 40-45 years. No problem, ever the optimist, cut the end of the can off with my knife---YESS!!!!--there is liquid showing where the metal is crimped to the cardboard side. A paper towel judiciously applied to the barely showing pink liquid--sucked up enough to wipe about 3 1/2 feet of track, very thinly.

I am running a L&N F7, with 6 pullman cars, 2 have lights. As the engine has been run I am noticing the amount of flickering in the pullman lights diminishing, with a more constant light, and the engine seems to be more responsive--will go to the shop tomorrow and acquire a proper amount of ATF to use. I am encouraged by the results so far.

YGW   COPD--Destruction of cell tissue in the lung, being young and stupid a contributing factor. Working in enviroments with contaminents also helps--and yes, l also smoked at one point in my life. So question is: was it smoking, or machining Nitronic-60,coated with titanium nitride the root cause?, add a touch of granite dust from drilling holes for explosives, dash of Agent Orange, and smoke from high sulpher cutting oil laced with carbon tet to round out things. Having too many birthdays is a big plus---

JaBear

Methinks you have witnessed an elephant or two in your travels, not many would know the import of the "riggin"

Ulrich

Thank you for the Fire Insurance, much appreciated.

Wishing all a blessed Easter/Passover, prayers to all in need.

Train Front Looking forward to hearing from Jan (if he makes it back from his quest) and Charlie to see what there results are with ATF on the rails are. Depending on the weather Sunday I may do the ultmate test. Have not ran a engine in the car repair barn yard for 7 years? Never got into operations. I bet there is $150 in turnouts in that section. If I can add a little ATF there and run a engine into the car repair barn and out I will be impressed! It will be covred in spider webbs if it makes it out.

YGW: no it's not mice eating my veggies, we've caught the squirrels and rabbits doing it, besides.

Plotted out the greenhouse's location: 7' for the back door fo the bonus room, to the right will be a patio wiht a 7'x7' vinyl pergola on it If i can get it ordered in time. That will be over a paver'd patio using 8'x16' cinder pavers in a basket weave pattern. Thta. for now, until the bigger greenhouse and wood gazebo is built will be our "back yard paradise".

well, I'm pooped.

Evening all

Out working on the hobby barn. Didn't make as much progress as I wanted. The cut man was screwing up right and left ! He ruined three sheets of very expensive siding in ROW !

ROR - 32 miles ! That is impressive. How long did that take ?

Angel - missing our post was HUGE Whistling okay maybe not huge. Maybe even not a small deal Laugh

Ulrich - how about the deer ? How is Petra feeling ? Careful.and don't overdo it.

MoeLarry - WELL that explains a LOT ! Full moon residues on my week !

Ken - Hmmm that guy sounds sketchy. What in the world is a single guy doing with a king size bed ? Pimping ? Drugs ? Did he appear anything like that ?

FRRYKid - did you get to see the bombing ?

Lion - you look pretty buff in Florida !! Indifferent

Garry - Bet you were surprised to find Lion in sunny Florida !

Galaxy - one bite ? Think it is mice ? Have you set traps ?

Herrinchoker - nitro is no fun and it does give a massive headache ! How did you get COPD ? What causes that ?

JaBear - I bet everyone shows up to man the pump when the call goes out ! I know I would ?

A glorious day in the valley of the sun. I went out for a 32-mile bike ride this morning and the weather was perfect. Things are going to start warming up soon so I am enjoying it while I can. We are still very dry right now--13% relative humidity and it may get to the single digits by this afternoon. The dry air makes for larger swings in our temperature, about 30 degrees or more between our low and high for the day.

Morning diners,

Thanks for the replys YGW and Der.

The problem with the internet connection has been fixed. It turned out to be the button that needed to be turned on by the relay box around half mile away.

Being off the internet wasn't a bad thing. I reorganized my USB drive (memory stick) which I called it. In reality I didn't really missed anything in two weeks than I thought. Another than reading your guys posts and videos.

Good Evening!

Man, am I beat! The HD list for today was more than a mile long, starting with doing the laundry, the weekend grocery run, dusting the furniture, vacuuming the floor, cleaning the bathroom and preparing lunch. Loading the dish washer, unloading the dish washer, make some coffee. Did I mention I made a cake yesterday? Well, today, we enjoyed some of it - yummy!

Now I am retiring to doing nothing, maybe run the evening train over the layout, and while doing it, developing ideas on how to improve it. I think I will be redoing the grass to give the layout an early Fall touch.

Today´s video shows part 1 of a cab ride in a Rhaetian Railway class Ge 6/6 II Bo'Bo'Bo' (that´s for three powered two-axle trucks) electric down the Albula line - you know, it´s my favourite railroad of all. The video does not only show the track ahead, but also the controls and the man handling them. The loco is an old girl of nearly 60 years and still runs like a Swiss watch!

Enjoy!

Ken,

Later today I will be packing some eats, grab my compass, and will enter the garage to retrieve the ATF. Will post later this date as to how it works.

In 98 I was diagnosed with COPD, and chronic asthma/bronchidis--my O2 level will bounce between 85-97. I also have Angina, and use Nito-lingual, spray under the tongue, to calm that down.  If I will be doing something strenuous, snow removal, cutting fire wood, I will take 2-3 hits of the nitro beforehand to retard the chest pains. As a general rule I will rest until the pressure eases, rather than use the nitro because of the headaches the nitro causes. In 99,2000, and again in 2001, I had roto-rooter procedures done in the arteries in my heart. My symptoms are simular to those I experienced in 99 when they did the first operation, so I will not be supprised if that is to be done again. Anywhoo--steadey as she goes-no friggin with the riggin--and DON'T plug the scuppers.

Well, I ahve hauled/dumped 380# of  er uh, um...dung, 16 CUft of mulch and some dirt.

Also moved 16 2"x8"x 16" pavers to start planning building the patio plat form.

I was a tired little boy, laid down for a nap at 5:30, never woke up til midnight.

Found a nice fencing system for decent money on amazon to kee critters out fo my garden,. the thing that bugs me, is that they taek ONE BITE ONLY out of each fruit or veggie and leave the rest of it whole then move on to the next one...if they ate jsut one to satisfy their hunger, I;d be happier and woul be willing to share my bounty, but no, htey gotta go and spoil the whole bunch!

This year I will ahve efforsts in place to ward them off.

well, I think I go backa dn sleep some more.

FRRYKid - I bet the military jumped at the chance to blow up the ice dam. The guys I know in the military enjoy demo work using explosives, bombs etc.. !

I don't recall ever hearing what the military's opinion was on the situation, but there were lots of community people watching the goings on. They were hoping to see a big explosion but the bomb was set so that it would go off under the ice. Still made history and causes a few who don't know our town's history to be stumped by that fact.

Hobby Front:  Getting further on my coal cars. Next step is get the new dates and the car type put on. Lots of piecing for those details. Also got a nice delivery in the mail today: A couple of sets of lettering that I can adapt for my combo boxcar that is in my project bin. (Next up in the queue.) Met someone via Facebook that had them and could spare them for me to use for this project. He has been thanked for those decals. (Unusual prototype and I had been unable to find anything similar commercially.)

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed, Tom, Jan and I will have a Beer please. Give Rick a Root Beer float and let CNC Charlie have what he wants on my tap.

Work Front Again a slow day, 3 customers but a unlikely customer turned out to be a good one! Young guy with lots of tats, new work boot with the laces not tied and tags still on them came in. Said he was looking for a Luxury King Sizes Mattress. Said he want the second I showed him, hum that was to easy. Whistling Got him to the counter and started writting the ticket. Told me "I was just looking, but I will be back with the cash I live just down the street". I will be dang, 2 hours later he showed back up, gave me $1200.00 in cash. Made $110.00 in spiff, so I think I may have beat Rick today in spiffs! Smile, Wink & Grin

Jan and CNC Charlie Looking forward to hearing about your resulits with ATF And Zip Rail cleaner. Charlie, why did you never try the Zip Rail Cleaner?

Ulrich I am going to watch the video you posted today, seemed intresting. Glad Petra is doing better!

Ulrich - Have you seen the wolves lately ?

Unfortunately not. Wolves have quite a bit of a territory they roam in, so chances for another sighting are pretty small.

It started to rain later in the afternoon, so not even our "deer" visitors showed up this evening. I caught a glimpse this morning, though!

Started to watch a video on how the rails conquered Alaska  - quite interesting!

I´ll continue to watch until the bed bugs bite!

Over and out - for today!

Edit: John - the "Canadian toothpaste" has arrived yesterday Smile, Wink & Grin - a big thank you! It´ll come in handy!

YGW:
Der - How are you ? Recover from the reaction?
Thank you kind Sir, the recovery was blessedly rapid, and no after effects bar a slight under tongue soreness for a day or two. So long as I don’t ever ( as in never again) take that particular med I should be fine. Dr. appointment to review situation and plan strategies in a week or so. I’m more concerned with your “main pump” problem.Angel
JaBear - Hot english Mustard, I thought English food was known for being bland ?
Compared to “Southren viatals" perhaps. However the yellow paint which passes for mustard in North America is indescribably vile. (IMHO, of course!)

Ulrich:Really enjoying your videos, thanks…also we are both enjoying the “Full Steam Ahead” programs by the BBC which we see Sundays evenings from PBS out of Boston. Tomorrow it’s about how the railways pretty much invented holiday travel and the sea side tourist industry in Britain. A stat which was dropped in a recent episode is that there are over 500 miles of regular steam powered rail line in the UK, and from last week, that rail travel in Brit is now at an all time high! Glad Petra is doing well – this current phase won’t last very long, in my wife’s experience from earlier this year. Please give her our very best wishes. Sorry about your son’s careless attitude, we feel your hurt.Angel

galaxy:
got GOJI berries, BLACK BERRIES. AND RED RASPBERRIES AND ASPARAGUS AND ONINON SETS TO PLANT. YUM!
…better be prepared to give those blackberries lots of room! Sounds like good eating ahead. Our compost is now thawed, so I’d better get ready to re-fill the runner (pole) bean row. We always plant those in the same spot, (so they can grow up strings attached to a shed eve) and so have to renew the soil each year. Yes I know their nitrogen fixing bacterial nodes on the roots do a bit, but we haul all that up with the roots each Fall.

angelob:

The internet was off at house since last Sunday. During the last 10 days we had our phone installers put in new phone lines, modem and etc. I don't know when I'll be back on. They still can't find the problem.
…must be endemic. Our friends a few miles away switched internet and phone providers recently and still aren’t fully back on-line after three weeks. He has my email but his test posts don’t come in.

Garry:
Der.  I'm impressed the the Nn3 turntable. perhaps only you would attempt building one. Looks good so far
…thanks, it’s turning out quite well. I’ve had practice at the concept because I did a HOn30 line in Alberta using N Scale track and needed one for that. The focus of this photo was the two HOn30 trains mid distance – but the (very unfinished at that time) turntable is lower right, out of focus.  That Full Steam Ahead series has shown me that it took 4 men – 2 at each end – to turn equipment by walking round the rim pushing on a yet-to-be-provided railing of a personnel walk on one edge of the bridge. One lives, one learns….

Ray:
May get out the lawn mower and be the first in the neighborhood to start that crap this year.
The sound of the two-stroke was heard in the land on Wednesday – but I think it must have been a lawn de-thatcher or aerator. There won’t be cutable grass for a while yet up this way.

CN Charlie:
Anyway the waterfall is falling so hopefully the Warblers will hear it and come down for a drink and bath.
– so long as the beavers don’t make a party of it!

Is anyone else having trouble with the Page count for the Diner? For me it’s been stuck at 5 since Wednesday and I have to manually enter the # (currently 6) in the address bar of my browser. Anyway, tea-time, and then more turntable or possibly castle hill track roadbed work. Did I mention that the Marklin Z starter set has got as far as Canada, so may be with me by the time the Post Office reopens on Tuesday.Yeah TTFN

Hello all

Very busy "Good Friday"

I am very disappointed in this week. I thought I would be heading into a regular production time with std easy stuff happening. Instead it has been a nightmare, A flooded house, failed electric meter inspection, Site inspector showing up and fining one of our vendors for major money........is there a full moon or something ? Witching hour what gives ??

FRRYKid - I bet the military jumped at the chance to blow up the ice dam. The guys I know in the military enjoy demo work using explosives, bombs etc.. !

Garry - Glad your trip has been safe and to hear that Shellys mom is home from the hospital bunch of blessings there !

Ken - I think your luck is not going to improve until you change employers. Sorry your life stinks currently. We found out from our tax lady that we will OWE 2K dollars and this after we increased our with holdings a LOT last year, this REALLY STINKS ! There goes Hobby barn money !

Angel - Glad to hear you are okay. I had been wondering what happened to you. Hope you get it fixed soon so we can see more of ya.

Der - is that a bridge or a turntable ?

Ulrich - Have you seen the wolves lately ?

LION - LOL No forks for the sphagetti ?

CN - I wouldnt consider running trains nothing to do. If I could do that right now I would think that a great fulfilling day. Oh I cant wait to get some main line up......

Good Morning,

A dull day here with showers but it is quite warm, about 60F. Yesterday was a beautiful day here so I took the opportunity to get the pond cleaned and the waterfall working. It takes me about 4-5 hours to do that job as I have to fill and then pump out the pond several times to clear out the sediment that seems to build in the fall and winter. Anyway the waterfall is falling so hopefully the Warblers will hear it and come down for a drink and bath.

Not much on the agenda today. Most stores are closed which is fine with me so will just stay home. I might run trains for a while. I say that most days and actually manage to do it even if it is just for 15 minutes.

Ken is having good luck with his ATF on the tracks. I have some stuff I bought a long time ago called Rail Zip that is supposed to improve the conductivity. I think it is just ATF in a small bottle as it is red and sure looks and feels like ATF. Anyway I put some on my N scale tracks as they seem to get dirty very fast so here's hoping.

Time for another coffee. Yesterday I was able to sit outside and enjoy the birds, squirrels, and chipmunks frollicking on the lawn but I think I would get a little wet today. My wife tamed a chipmunk last year and he is back again. He runs up to her when she calls his name and will take a peanut from her hand.

Have a nice day.

I know I should eat fish today, but I will use the opportunity to get some of the stuff we are not having these days - like a big, fat and greasy burger with a big plate of fat and greasy fries.

Lunchtime on Good Friday!

I know I should eat fish today, but I will use the opportunity to get some of the stuff we are not having these days - like a big, fat and greasy burger with a big plate of fat and greasy fries. Zoe, please do me the favor, but don´t let Petra know!

The day started nicely, with plenty of sunshine. Now it´s back to dull and grey again and I expect it to ra*n any minute. Suits my mood! I was hoping our son would find his way to us this weekend, but he chose not to come. He´s breaking our hearts and doesn´t even see it!

Galaxy - I like that little conservatory! Or is it a greenhouse? Any way , it´s fun to have when you have a green thumb, but also a lot of work to maintain. I still miss my garden quite a lot!

Out for the moment - I may come back later!

FRRYKid - How deep is the yellow stone ? There was a civil war battle in which the yankees at Balls Bluff got their butts handed to them by the rebs. The yankees were driven back into a "river" that some brave yankee skipper floated a boat of some size up and rescued a bunch of them. When I went to the park where this happened I was absolutely amazed they could get a Johnboat up the river much less a larger boat loaded !

Off the top of my head, I don't know how deep on average but it is recommended to not go swimming in it because of the depth and the current. There were times that the boat had to wait as the river was low enough that a boat would get stuck on sandbars. There have been others where the river has flooded things out. The river is actually called "Yellowstone" as it starts at Lake Yellowstone in Yellowstone National Park. The geography of our rivers gives us problems with ice jams. Town is usually safe with the dike. (The dike has its own problems which I can't go into as Vinnie would get on my case.) The rural areas tend to minor flood if those rivers jam. During WWII the ice jams got bad enough that the mayor requested the military at the air base to bomb the river to try to break the jam. It didn't completely clear but it broke it enough to save the town.

Evenin' folks!

Janie I could use a cup of decaf to warm me up before I head out to bed.

Garry those images are hard to see on my iMac too.....  Not sure what Galaxy has been taking these days for meds, but...............

I made my twice a year pilgramage to Sweet Expressions, the chocolate store in Canandaigua to get the stuff ready for Easter Bunny....  I tell the girls working there that I try not to breath when I walk in that place.  I can gain 5 lbs. just walking in the door.  Man does that store smell good.  Millions of calories on the shelves and rather pricey goodies for sure.  But, oh man do they make good chocolate!  About $115 later I got back in the Volt and headed home.  Most of the stash is in the refrigerator to keep it solid and me out of it at the moment.  Tomorrow I will decide who gets what and get it all ready to take on the Easter trail.  After church My family will head out to the traditional dinner out with my sister, the big boss.  That will happen this year at a very pricey restaurant over in Clifton Springs, and then we immediatly head over to my son's house for Easter dinner with his MIL's family.  My sister still has the misguided notion that everyone's world should revolve around her and her wishes.... (After all SHE is the Aunt and they are much more important than......) We finally got her out of the habit of insisting that Christmas dinner had to at her house....  (Sings, "We've always done it this way before, we'll always do it this way therefore!..."  [sung to the tune of the Old One-Hundreth]).

I did manage to spend about an hour working on the layout, and actually managed to run one of my 2-6-6-2 Mallets from under the bridge where it has been hiding for the last year to the yard at Kanadarqua (Canandaigua).  I then was going to hook it up to pull the heavy track cleaning car, but decided to vacume and check in the tunnels first...  Decided I need a "window" in one place to be able to see inside the tunnel so I got out the saber saw and started work on that project instead.  Wired up some small 12v lamps under there so I will be able to see a little better.  May need about 2 more of them in different places as well.

May get out the lawn mower and be the first in the neighborhood to start that crap this year.  Also need to plant some the Milkweed seeds I collected last fall.  Taking out the strawberries that I have never had many of (the squirrels and birds love them) and putting in something for the Monarches if any should come this way.  Haven't seen any around here since I was a kid.  They say 90% of the population has dissappeared in the last decade or so...  Sad, they are beautiful butterflies and excellent polinators.

YGW, just click on the links in my signature..........

Time to head for bed.  I think this quote may be appropriate today considering a few of the posts I read.....

Laugh about it, shout about it
When you've got to choose
Every way you look at this you lose"  - Paul Simon

Good evening.

We and  home, it will take while to get back in the routine.

Galaxy.  For some reason your images are hard to see in this iphone. Looks like it may be a green houses. Good luck if you do that project.

Ken. I like the black and white photo of the B&O passenger train.  I enjoyed rail travel before Amtrak.

Der.  I'm impressed the the Nn3 turntable. perhaps only you would attempt building one. Looks good so far

YGW.  Thanks.  We arrived in Nashville on time but Main Squeeze wanted to see her family in Nashville.  While we were in Florida, Shelley's Mom in Nashville was in the hospital.  She is home now and they think she will be okay now.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, Ed, Tom, Jan and I will have a Beer please.

Far as day's off this one sucked big rail spikes! Felt really bad today, got up and go had all ready went and left me standing there. Did get some needed running done and made The Hated House Payment to Bank Of Stupid! (DBA Bank Of America) This getting to be the norm, my car broke down. This is the 4th time my Car as broken down while I have been making a house payment! Car died while I was driving it. Coasted in to a parking lot, would restart then started chunging and die again. Hoping it a fuel fliter, but more than likely a fuel pump. Sigh

Had to use some of the insurance money (wife car was totaled from hail) to make this house payment. With the ash pit sales I have been having guess any hopes of a new Sound Engine or computer is out the window. Sigh

Jan Are you having heart problem or is it a lung issue? I was depressed when my blood oxgen went from 99% too 98%. Far as the ATF I hope you have good results like I have had.

Down in the dumps again, Cuda Ken
