Posted by galaxy on Saturday, April 1, 2017 3:10 AM

This Diner is open to all forum members! For those joining "the regulars" for the first time - Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner is a place to gather, a place without an agenda or a topic.  It's free to all, to read, to join in, or just to enjoy some virtual food.  Our gracious hosts ask only that we avoid certain hot-button topics like politics and religion that sometimes raise tempers. Please remember the Forum is owned by Kalmbach, and they set the rules. Please review the rules in Steven's post at the top of the General Forum. (MR Forum Policies)

The place is managed by Vinnie - under the watchful eye of Steven Otte, who represents the owner. Waiting staff  are Flo, the twins Chloe and Zoe, Janie and Brunhilda - friendly, no nonsense folks!

So come on in, enjoy the delicious virtual food and share your day with us!

The diner was renamed in homor of our dear deparated esteemed colleague, Jeffrey Wimberly, He IS sorely missed! As are our other departed members from the R.I.P. Track:

The RIP track is the place for us to pay our respect to our friends and forum members who are no longer with us.

So, come sit at the Rivet Counter or a booth, and Have a cuppajoe and breakfast ON ME!

Have a GREAT DAY, Everyone!

Good Morning!

Are you enjoying your cuppajoe and breakfast? It's WAFFLES, Sausage and eggs!

This month it was suggested we visit Baltimore, the home of the GREAT B&O railroad of yesteryear, a Place where much of railroading in this country started, and is known fodly as "The Birthplace of American Railroding".

The B&O museum is a great place to start at their location at 901 W Pratt Street, Baltimore, MD 21223:

http://www.borail.org/ is their official site.

Comprised of the oldest and most comprehensive collection of railroad history in the Western Hemisphere, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum, Inc. is a unique cultural and educational asset for the city and the region. An unparalleled roster of the 19th and 20th century railroad equipment, original shop buildings, and surviving tracks at the historic Mt. Clare site provide an integrated resource to present virtually every aspect of American railroad development and its impact on our society, culture and economy.

The Baltimroe & Ohio Railroad Museum is dedicated to:

  • The preservation of the physical legacy and the experience of American railroading and the interpretation of its history to the widest possible audience. The museum emphasizes the history of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Western Maryland Railway, CSX Corporation and other Maryland railroads, and those entities with which they connected or closely interacted.
  • The development of programs which help to broaden and deepen the public appreciation of the past, present, and future significance of the railroad industry in the development of American life, especially the City of Baltimore, State of Maryland, and the surrounding region.
The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum is dedicated to fulfilling its vision by:
  • B&O Railroad MuseumCollecting, preserving, documenting and presenting representative objects, skills, and communal records from all facets of the railroad industry.
  • Collecting, preserving, and interpreting historical railroad documents, data, and research for public access.
  • Presenting railroad history to a broad public audience in the context of American history research and interpretation
  • Developing educational outreach programs.
  • Creating ongoing substantive interactions with the surrounding community, city and region.
  • Striving to become a model of professionalism in railroad history and historic preservation, with emphasis on better integration of railroad museum activities with appropriate academic disciplines, railroad enthusiast organizations, and the larger historic preservation and museum communities.
  • Pursuing prudent administrative & financial management to ensure short and long-term survival and growth.

I nearly got a chance to visit, but when we went to Baltimore, it did nothing but POUR rain, and it was about the time of rioting in Downtown Baltimore, a scene we weren't to sure we wanted to get anywhere near, so we forewent our visit, in hopes of returning another time, perhaps this summer!

The B&O {and all it's incarnates, the C&O, Chessie, and of course CSX} happens to be my FAVORITE railroad of all time! I loosely model the B&O,and for "variety" I change out to C&O stock or Chessie Stock and am developing a collection of CSX stock. For my model railroading fun and whimsey. I also will change out buildings to "move with the times". It keeps my modeling fresh. Now I just have to build a new layout in my new basement, which is filling up fast with Other Schtuff.

TODAY IS SPECIAL at the B&O museum!:

All Aboard for Train Ride Season at the B&O!
Beginning April 1
Train ride season returns! Take a round trip train ride along the first commercial mile of railroad right-of-way laid in America, recognized as the birthplace of American railroading. For the train ride schedule please click here. With paid admission train ride tickets are $3 adults, $2 for children (2-12), and free for B&O Members. Please note that train rides are not guaranteed with your visit and are subject to change without notice.

 Admission is just $8.00!

Good morning, Everyone!

We have left MARCH behind, it went so quickly!

Spring is springing! My TULIPs and SNOWBELLS and a few non-rembered bulbs are coming up!

Hence, of course, my SPRING ALLERGIES are starting! My thoughts to those who share my missery!

April Showers bring May flowers, so I can look forward to a lot of rain this month, but May will bust forth with blooms and blossoms and color!

Prayers for Ulrich and Petra for her surgery andhis struggles.

Prayers For YGW's heart issues, maybe it would be appropriate to say "may the stent be with you"? if that's all it is, that MAY be the best to hope for. Heart issues are no fun, I have a few minor ones myself, controlled adequately by medications {for now}.

Prayer's for Mr. B's knee issues, no fun, as I have torn ACL and MCL ligaments in mine. Hey, Mr. B, do you have a knee brace to wear? I do, It works GREAT.

Prayers for ALL who need them, i will light the prayer candle promptly at 7:00 AM.

HAVe a GREAT day! and A GREAT WEEKEND!

Good Morning again

I lit the prayer candle earlier, at 6 AM, and said the daily prayer for all!

FOr those who are NEW here, we are NOT allowed to talk about religious issues, BUT: we ARE ALLOWED to pray for one another, as prayer has many definitions, and is not a praticularly religious "argumentative" item. That is the ONLY "religious" type thing we can discuss in the diner.

Other forbidden topics are in the FORUM RULES posting sticky at the top page of the general forum. They include, but are not limited to: religion, politics, guns, violence, train "tagging" {graffiti}, and more.

Here is a reposting of the forum basic rules for those who don't know:

Angry Stay away from divisive topics, like graffiti, hoboes, train-hopping, and what makes a "real model railroader."

SoapBox Avoid controversial off-topic subjects like race, religion, ethnicity, sex, violence, guns, abortion, politics, unions, and immigration, even in signatures. This extends to images, as well.

Bang Head Be civil. No name-calling, insults, or put-downs (including accusing others of "trolling").

Devil Keep it clean. No "bad words," even if you replace them with $¥MßØ1$. And no racy pictures or discussion of adult topics.

My 2 CentsThumbs Down No selling or advertising. That means no links or references of any kind to items or services for sale or auction. No promoting events, fund-raisers, contests, websites, Facebook groups, or other Forums, either.

If you spot a violation of these policies, have a problem with another Forum user, or want to contact the site moderators for any other reason, use the "Report Abuse" icon at the lower-left of every post.

There, Thanks to Mr. Otte's direction {and he is Cousin Vinnie's boss} we know where we stand. He WILL delete or alter what comments he deems in violation, and inform us that "cousin Vinny is getting HOT" if need be. Generally, he leaves us alone if we stay in our rules!

{BTW: Mr. OTTE {AKA Steven}, Has informed us Monday is his Birthin' day! SO it would be great for all of us to congratulate him on getting a year older! His CAKE ios carrot with cream cheese frosting! [I'd have a piece, but alas, it's no longer on my diabetic menu]}

Cousin Vinny sits in the back corner and is our resident "bouncer". He's a GREAT fellow, but if you cross him or raise his Ire...well lets just not find out what will happen!

Again, have a GREAT DAY all!

It will be cloudy, potentially rainy here, high temp around 45f. It WILL be in the 50s next week, can't wait! How is the weather where YOU are today?

Good Afternoon!

I see Galaxy has already facilitated the move to the April 2017 location! Thanks for the smooth transition, Galaxy!

Petra and I will be spending a quiet weekend before it is "OP" day. Both of us are a bit nervous about what´s coming up.

I gave my Swiis layout a good cleaning with the vac. Over the year, just too much dust had accummulated to be just brushed off. While being at it, I also cleaned the track, but that was actually not necessary, thanks to gleaming. I use and old dried sponge cloth which has anice texture for this job. There was no gunk on the cloth.

The layout now looks great and the train runs fun - just the way it should after a thorough Spring cleaning!

It´s quite hazy in my neck of the woods, currently 65F with a 95% of rain later in the day - bah! Not my kind of weather!

Hood morning everyone!

My thoughts and prayers to all who can use them.

I had a long shift yesterday. 16-hours from 7am-11pm at work.

I'm glad to see Baltimore is this month's locale. I live in Lancaster PA, so I'm only 90-minutes away. I went to the B&O museum when I'd been I think 17-18 around there. I liked it a lot, and hope to get back sometime. Plus see sites in Baltimore as it is a fun place.

On the MR front, I ordered an unused Paragon2 T1 numbered 2102, in the Iron Horse Rambles scheme as a backup T1.

Good Morning. Happy Conrail Day!

Baltimore is a great choice to visit. Home to CSX, NS and Canton RR, a great and busy port, the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens, Edgar Allen Poe and Babe Ruth.  I lived there in 1984-1985, a very happy time. Baltimore was a great place to live.

It's rather cold and raw today in Jersey, we had almost 4" of rain yesterday.

Well, it's been nice, see y'all next month.

Yes, I do have a knee brace, and I wear it while playing hockey or doing other strenuous things.  The knee is feeling better, and yes, I'll be playing hockey again on Tuesday.  The doctor said I could.

We've got snow again, but not the foot+ of white stuff they predicted.  It looks like we'll top out at a few inches.  I have sufficient beer to last through the afternoon.

Yes and Plymouth Rocks.

Good. Had I not had the knee brace on on Monday when I broke the axle, and got out and slipped in the mud, I might have damaged my knee. Fortunately all I have is a big red strawberry in the hole around the knee cap.

Well I've got a few errands to run.

Have a great day

Today is the El Tour de Mesa, a charity bike ride. I will be riding in the Bike Patrol for the "fun ride," a ten-mile ride for kids and families. Bike patrol means offering words of encouragement, assistance with bike problems, the occasional gentle correction, and the the very occasional accident. It will be the slowest ride of the year. Last time I did this, it took me almost 90 minutes to ride 10 miles. (Normally 10 miles would take me around 35 minutes.) Ah, but it is for the kids.

Good Evening,

I have never been to Maryland before so this will be an interesting journey for me.

Dave, if you send me your e-mail address by PM I will send you a photo of hte Martial Eagle and a few other interesting birds we saw in Botswana and South Africa. One was Pels Fishing Owl, a large brown owl that, you guessed it, feeds on fish. They are quite rare and we were lucky to see them on all 3 trips to the Okovango Delta.  In our own yard, a large flock of Juncos has arrived. Always nice to see them on their way up north.

We are looking into doing another Africa trip next year but it is unlikely it will be back to Botswana. They have jacked up the prices substanially and as it is in US dollars, that adds close to 40% on the cost for us. We are now looking at Kenya. We were there in 2011 and 2007 but weren't into birding at the time so there is a whole new dimension to any return trip there.

Ran the 0-8-0 again today. I will make up a train with it and see if the light Mike is behaving. The chuff sound cuts out on it. BLI sent me a new chuff sensor that they said would cause the problem but I haven't installed it yet. I have a few small kits to assemble and think I will put together an Atlas platform kit that I plan on putting by the harbour spur for the tourist train.

Time to go down and watch more skating. The World Figure Skating championships are on right now. We recorded them so we can skip all the commercials.

We often jaunt down to Lancaster to go to Strasburg RR. We just love it down there, although Lincoln Hiway is getting a bit too much overbuilt, I think, ruining the "Lancaster CHarm" of the Amish farming countryside.

In another time, we might have liked living down there.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed and I will have a Beer in a frosted B&O mug please!

Work Front Or should I call it Reading Front? Found a new to me writter I like better than Lee Childs, it is Daved Baldacci. Way better writter than Childs, but I am still a Jack Reacher Fan. Love the Camle Club series and John Carr / Oliver Stone.

April Fools Day Yep the day I joined the US Army? I wonder who the joke was on? I found out! Whistling I found some photo's of my self while is basic traning, company Alpha-15-4. Boy I looked and a Lean Mean Fighting Doork! Broke my wire rim glass after like 4 days so I was wearing the Army Issue Dork Glasses! Need to scan the photo so you folk and get a chuckle.

Train Front Made to Harbor Freight today and bought a new Multimeter for $6.48 with tax, I spare no expense on the CK Railroad! Seems the old one had spit the bite and readings where off. The Mighty Bessener SD 7 that Ed sent that BBQ a DH123 decoder with out a load was pulling a 0.43 amps and stalled at 0.86 amps? Ran it for a good 5 minutes before I stalled the engine. So how did it BBQ the decoder? Confused

 Later, Ken

Gary Hum, if by chance you don't need that B&O Bag? Whistling Well I am kidding, I have no need of it but I do find it quit fetching.

Ulrich and Petra Hope all goes well Monday which is 2:23 AM as I post. God bless both of you! Angel

YGW Well I hope all is well with you as well! I know you have a powerfull backer and don't have to use the VA health care.

Ed Guess you are busy on the layout. Do miss seeing you in the Dinner.

Anyone has this kind of Ladder?

If so what do you think of it? I need a new ladder so I can clean the gutters.

 Later, Ken

Evenin'!

Janie, I could sure use a cup of decaf about now....  please and thank you Ma'am....

Well.... (Deep Subject!), I had a great weekend operating trains at 3 different model raoilroads over in the Syracuse, NY area.  All of them were excellent and I had fun hanging around and working "crew" with everyone.  One of them is in a brand new house (so new it doesn't appear except in the very latest GPS directions.  (even Googe didn't know where the house was.)  The owner has the trackage in built not much more.  He has gotten enough scenery done to know this will be an outstanding pike! It is going to be HUGE!  Probably around 1200 square feet not counting the crew room.  Basically is the entire basement area.  I worked with another guy for most of the trains I was assigned.

This morning I had the privilege to operate on one of the finest layouts anywhere!!!  The owner is an MMR and his work is just plain incredible.  He will take a bunch of photos of the prototype and then create a scene that is stone by stone identicle to the protoype.  If fact he has (during a clinic) put up on the screen a photo of the prototype and a photo of his layout and ask us which is which.  Half of us got it wrong!!!!!!  Absolutely amazing rock work and other scenery (Colorado).  His layout is also huge and very complex, but very easy to learn how to run so I was very comfortable and had a great time.

I can tell you, I have come home with a renewed interest in getting back down and make some temporary items (Like a bridge) to be able to get my SLOW up and operating soon.  I have been so busy trying get everything else done, I haven't run a train in about 2 years down there.  Gotta get the track up and running and start having opp sessions.

I also found when I got home today, in yesterday's mail, a CD from an old friend who has had a lot of drawings published.  In it are a couple hundred photos of the last bridge I need to build.  All I can say is, "What have I gotten myself into?"  Talk about intricate.  At least it is different from the run of the mill truss bridges.  this one is a type that was used in the late 1800's up to about 1930 so it will fit nicely with my era.

Been catching up on your posts tonight.  Prayers for all who need them and for a bunch who may not right at the moment as well.....  Especially keeping Petra and Ulrich in my thoughts right now!  Stay warm and safe!
