Hey diners,

First things first. I'm posting at the library. I don't have enough time. (If you guys missed me I'm okay). The internet was off at house since last Sunday. During the last 10 days we had our phone installers put in new phone lines, modem and etc. I don't know when I'll be back on. They still can't find the problem.

Be safe and have fun.

Well

I was up to my ankles in er, uh, dung today. Added cow manure to the raised beds along with compost.

Also added wormcastings soil to the trellis beds.

Also added some more red mulch to the short but growing{?} privacy bushes. THey are supposed to grow 1-2 feet a eyar, HAH. Of course I added the recommended root rocket root fertilizer, but it's supposed to grow both the roots and the plant...HAH. Maybe its growing roots, but I don't know about the plant!

It was a nice day as long as the sun was out, now chilly and cold adn I think rain sets in tonight.

Got my 3 hairs cut yesterday, only one gray one.Ha. She said she saw NO gray hairs, just stress marks.!ha.

well, I best get to planting somehtin, got GOJI berries, BLACK BERRIES. AND RED RASPBERRIES AND ASPARAGUS AND ONINON SETS TO PLANT. YUM!

FRRYKid:
The blocks were originally destined for the hill already pictured but I changed my mind.) and few other scrap pieces I found around the layout. As the shapes had to be built from various pieces, they are just sitting on the hills. They will be glued on next week as well.
…Thanks for posting those layout progress pics. The way you approach things is scary close to what happens here! I’ve unglued land forms (actually glued one down the other night as it kept getting knocked onto the floor!) and changing original intended uses is endemic….I’m now figuring out how to add extra land to make sense of the real estate needs of the narrow gauge line’s necessary buildings etc. This is all retro-fitting. Very glad I hadn’t added rock castings to the scene yet!
Good Help Is Hard to Find Front: So we were to The Golden Arches this morning and ordered 2 small black coffees and one chocolate and one raspberry pastry thingy (their current coffee special offer) These were duly and correctly entered on the sales slip. When the order was served we had 2 small coffees with cream and 2 chocolate pastry thingies. So 75% error rate….(However, on the” Judge not that ye be not judged” Front, I admit to easily that % error rate typing this up Ashamed )
Layout Front: The N3n turntable bridge is slowly coming along. I’ve now progressed to this for the bridge  – and that sits in a pit thusly.   ( In processing that pit pic I noticed the brick liner needed some extra gluing to the form [a cut down spray bottle section], so that’s under a couple of clamps right now)  You can see the extra land needed in the cantelevered bit beyond the turntable pit. That will extend on either side - and of course to the ground level below!Whistling
Time has marched on I see; and now I must bid you all a farewell. Dinner is in the offing upstairs and then we have a Maundy Thursday service later this evening.- TTFN.

Good Evening!

It´s been rather quiet in the Diner today!

A day of typical April weather, with all the works, from snow flurries to a heavy down pour and spells of beautiful, sunny weather.

I took Petra to the doc this morning to get the stitches pulled. Everything is healing nicely, but she still has to goes slow for the next couple of weeks. No heavy lifting or stretching allowed. Two more weeks of extra household chores for me - what fun!

Did some last minute shopping for the upcoming Easter holidays. Tomorrow, all shops will be closed. It is a "quiet holiday", meaning no public music, dances, not even church bells. As a child, I didn´t like Good Friday, as we had to stay inside.

Saturday is laundry day again, plus some more shopping to be done - how I love that!

Today´s video shows British Steam in 2016:

Enjoy following the steam events throughout the year!

CU tomorrow!

Morning all

Lots happening today. W**k front. I recieved a call at 6am from a home owner that a pipe had burst in their kitchen ceiling and was flooding there house! Turns out the plumber had forgot to glue a 3/4" elbow and after three years it finally worked itself loose and water went EVERYWHERE major water damage. Bang Head I cannot fathom how that line held up for that long and never showed up on any pressure test, running water test etc...Go figure !

Hobby/Barn - Went through a Major hurdle yesterday at the Hobby barn. It passed the framing inspection. MOH happened to be home when the inspector showed up and he told here the work was done well. Thumbs Up start Installing siding Saturday.

Herrinchoker - $600 a day is not bad money if one can get it. If I could make that it would buy a Lot of N&W Steam of the highest calibre Smile, Wink & Grin

FRRYKid - How deep is the yellow stone ? There was a civil war battle in which the yankees at Balls Bluff got their butts handed to them by the rebs. The yankees were driven back into a "river" that some brave yankee skipper floated a boat of some size up and rescued a bunch of them. When I went to the park where this happened I was absolutely amazed they could get a Johnboat up the river much less a larger boat loaded !

Ken - I havent decided yet. I have cabinets that are extra (8) from work that I plan on using but there isnt near enough for that size room. I have am considering making some wood work that looks like steel that might support a bridge to support underneath. I am kicking around some ideas. Ulrich last year also worked up a drawing that I will use. He is an excellant designer. But the final design has not been decided.

Sawbones visit yesterday - they are discussing another heart surgery. They want me to wear a machine for a week or so to read the heart and then see what needs fixin...if they do this will be the sixth heart procedure this year Sad

Howmus - Would you share some photos of your layout ?

SNSR - Your post brought a smile to my face. Yes that is a very "slippery slope that" Laugh

Lion - How does a Lion eat noodles ? I gouda see that Whistling

JaBear - Hot english Mustard, I thought English food was known for being bland ? That cheesy toaste sound delicious. Do you all put pinapples on everything ?

ROR - Hope the eye exam goes well and just as important that you are able to find frames you like.

Steve - You should recieve a "pun"award Laugh That was pretty funny.

Garry - Yea glad you skipped United. Those guys dont play around there !!! Here is a Angel for a safe return trip.

Ulrich here is a Angel for you and Petra.

Der - How are you ? Recover from the reaction ?

Ken,

Have not done anything with the ATF, have had a un-scheduled, un-planned, un-wanted, un-needed--event with my heart. I am waiting to find out the scheduleing for some tests. I monitor my vitals twice a day, and started feeling like crap, I checked by O2, it was at 86, and my heart rate was 132, not really good. I was wondering what to do this spring---guess the decision has been made for me. It has been 17 years since my last surgery on the main pump, could have waited a bit longer, but what the hey---

I had been giving serious thought about trying to make some trips back out to Georges Bank- there has been a rebound with the haddock bio-mass, one of the young fishermen I hunt with has been making just over $6,000.00 for a 10 day trip, and there are two sites open on the boat, ( 100 foot trawler) In the past I have shipped as engineer on a 120 foot trawler, so nothing that I have not done before, yes, I was much younger, but cutting fish is more monitoneous than physical. Anyway---that is on hold as well. Great life if you don't weaken.

I will be trying the ATF before the week ends,( or I do) curious as to how it will work, will let you know.

herrinchoker

Then there is the issue of the cheese sandwitches, dripping with butter, running with melted cheese-------!!

FRRYKid - Are the hills in the area you are modeling rounded ? Do they have rock faces ?

Most of what I have is mostly good old gumbo hills with the occasional shale hill. About the only place that has a real rock face is at the river but that it a good 100-150' tall and the prototype railroads (NP/BN/BNSF and the CMSt&P) don't go that far upriver. (If one wants to look at it, punch up Google Maps and follow 59 North out of town until it crosses the Yellowstone and go slightly east and look at the north bank of the river.) We're "flatlands" for the most part. There are the occasional hills but nothing real major. Not like I'm trying to model the Rocky Mountains. The closest I will get is in the expansion. That is planned to be something duplicating the Missouri Breaks (the Milwaukee PCE from Kingston Junction to Denton or something similar.) That will take a little more research on the terrain if and when I get to do it.

What I have is a lot of ideas that I have blended on the layout. Just about every piece of track has changed at least once. (I don't know of any car ferries in Montana. Big Smile However, during the late 1800s we did have passenger boats that came to Miles City on the Yellowstone.)

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed, Tom and I will have a Crown Royal with a Beer chaser please. We will all so have a Grilled Ham and Cheese on Rye Bread with onion, pickel and mustared.

Rick I made $18.00 in spiff today! Stick out tongue Every little bit helps. What I need is a couple of $120.00 spiffs. The $5.00 and $10.00 should be the icing on the cake, not the meal it self.

Jan Have you tried the ATF on the rails yet? I had ran the Might Strange B&O F7's on the short line for two weeks with no wheel cleaning. I have them on the none treated main line for 3 days, just got done cleaning there wheels. Whistling

YGW I know you are busy getting the Hobby Barn bulit. Any plans on the Pike it self? What will the layout be supported? One thing I really like about K-10 Model Train layout (besides it being 80' long) is Ken used Kitchen Cabinets to support his layout. Got to love storeage!

Train Front After a few hick up's trains are running great. Have not cleaned any engines wheels on the short line in 5 weeks thanks to the ATF! F units are doing all the work, Monon, CB&Q and B&O.

 Later, Ken

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could sure use a cup of Hot Chocolate right now....

Just popping in to say hi.  Hi!  It has been a monstrously busy couple of days here getting everything ready to meet with the Guidance Councilors at the High School about our 15 MLK Scholarship Applicants.  This is going to be a tough one, as we will only be giving out 7 scholarships ($2,000 each) for the 2017-2018 college year.

I am almost ready to clean track and run some trains on my layout.  Been completing and repairing a bunch of wireing in what little spare time has been available.  May actually get to run a train tomorrow after I get back home from Canandaigua.  Have to visit a fantastic chocolate store there to get the Easter Bunny well stocked for the coming weekend.

Speaking of the Easter Bunny, he will be visiting the R&GV RR Museum and on Saturday which also happens to be our Opening Day for the season.  Yours truly will, of course, be Car Host on the Erie Caboose that day.

Best get moving and finish up a couple items before heading to bed.  Prayers for all in need!  Stay safe out there.  Oh, I'll add my quote for the evening since I have wandered in:

LIONS do not eat Cheeze.

ROAR

That may be true for North Dakota lions, but I know a very small Florida lion (about 5 pounds, I think) that loves cheese. Cheesy omelettes are his favorite. Here's the thing . . . once small lions eat human food, they don't want to go back to lion food that comes in cans. Slippery slope, that.

Brunhilda reminds me it's National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day

I made a grilled swiss-and-cheddar sandwich for lunch. Steve, thanks for the suggestion.

I am going to the eye doctor today. My current prescription is about 2 1/2 years old so I decided it is time for an update. The worst part is picking new frames. We get our glasses from Costco and their selection is not all that great. Add to that if your size of a specific frame is not on the wall, you are out of luck, pick something else. I may have to look elsewhere, we shall see.

FRRYKid - Thanks for posting photos it is always nice to see others work and the way they put it together. What are your plans for the hillside ?

The front hill will get a coat of Sculptamold to even some of the rough spots out. (The front of the hill ended up a little short on the concrete retaining wall side as somehow I had a wrong dimension. The Sculptamold will help to fill in the shortage.) The back hills will get another coat or two of ground newspaper to round them out a bit more.

I will have to see what my mood is when I decide to get the hot knife to the L-shaped pieces. The plan is to round them off to blend them better and make them not so angular.

Good Afternoon!

What a dull day! It´s been raining lightly since I got up at 6.30am this morning, without a minute´s break. According to our weather guessers, this is what the weather will be like for the Easter holidays!

UmbrellaStormNo

With nothing better to do at the moment, I started to watch steam train videos on Youtube. I found a nice showing the Swiss Furka Mountain Railway, one of my favourite narrow gauge lines in the southern part of Switzerland. The mountain line became obsolete in 1981, when the base tunnel connecting Oberwald and Realp was opened, allowing the famous Glacier Express train to run year around instead of only May until October. The line had to be closed during Winter, covered under 10 or more feet of snow. Beginning of May, the line was literally dug out and the catenary re-strung.

Enthusiast from all over the world prevented the demolition of the line and in 1985, preservation work started with hundreds of volunteers pitching in an incredible amout of man hours of work to get everything into working order again. Since 2010, the mountain line is completely back in business. The trains are pulled by the original locos, which had been sold to French Indochina following electrification in 1941. A team of steam loco specialists located the in Vietnam and were able to bring them back home, where they underwent complete restoration from rusty hulks into the shiny steam engines they are now!

Whenever I watch a video showing this line, my eyes get all watery. It was in 1966, when I traveled down the line - a 10-year old, full of hopes, none of which are left.

Henry - the BMW K100 is a great bike! I have never seen one with a Russian sidecar, though!

YGW Love the hobby barn.  Yes sidecars for motorcycles; classic, off road and handicapped  http://www.freedomsidecars.com/sidecars/freedom_sidecars.htm

I have a BMW K100 with a Ural sidecar.  I need to get to work on the front end, I think someone backed into me in the parking lot and bent the forks.  I took it apart then heart issues intervened and I never got back to it.

Galaxy  I remember the road to Hana being a beautiful, but long drive.  We stopped at a few of the many water falls and went for a swim.  I don't remember much about Hana itself.  That was another wife and another lifetime ago.  Say hello to Kris Kristopherson and Oprah.

Morning all

Flo can I have grits with lots of butter, salt and pepper, fried ham, egg over easy..

Hobby Barn - Yesterday after work I installed the last bit of hardware on the barn and installed the door knobs. Today we have the framing inspection and if all goes well this weekened we will start siding.

FRRYKid - Thanks for posting photos it is always nice to see others work and the way they put it together. What are your plans for the hillside ?

Ken - Spoken like a true sales man " I know what they need" If I were your employee I would be happy. Knowing teh product and the customers needs is always a plus.

Ricky W - We install Kitchen Aid products in our homes. They are okay but I am NOT impressed with their service. They have a sub who handles their service. Which is a pain in the back side when it comes to warranty work. They dod not have records of when the HO settle and that makes for LOTS of problems. We used to install GE Profile. I LOVED those guys. They had records, trained people in their products, parts came in a reasonble time frame etc...How is LG service performed ?

Tom - If you are ever heading down this way give me a heads up and maybe we can meet for coffee and train talk.

CN Charlie - WOW that is a LOT of shelled seeds. Is it very expensive ?

Howmus, Lion, Garry, Herrinchoker, Ulrich....Good morning : )

Flo, could I get my normal late-night snack of breaded mushrooms and blue cheese dressing please? Thank you so much.

FRRYKid - What is cottage fries ?

Cottage fries (aka American fries) are round slices of potatoes roughly 1" in diameter and about 1/4" thick that have been ripple cut on both sides. I came across them when I worked in food service out of college.

Hobby Front:  (and no, all the rest was not typed in this screen. I used my web editior)

This is one of the newer buildings on the layout. It is a long-planned view block for the local control panel for the rear of the layout. It controls all the track sidings that are on side of the hill
as well as the truntable, the ferry spur and the car ferry yard. This was finished last month and I just hadn't taken pictures of it before. It is a kitbash from DPM parts mainly from their Powerhouse kit, a Street Level Entry (30161), and the rollup door is from a Walthers sprue that I don't remember where it came from. (Aplogies on the bottom picture. It is a little bit dark in that area and I used Photoshop to clean it the best I could.)

Pictures of the new hill that I have installed over the last few weeks. The L-shaped piece of styrofoam was glued on this afternoon and will be carved next week. It was one of two pieces that I found at work and brought to the layout specifically for this hill. It was shortened to fit the hill. (More momentarily on where the other pieces went.) Apologies for the blur on the second image. (All the picts were taken with my cell phone.) The straight up and down area in the first pict will get a pair of Woodland Scenics Cut Stone retaining walls eventually. (aka When the budget gets recharged. I will have them probably the first part of May.) The wall in the blurred photo is a pair of City Classics concrete retaining walls wilh a fill strip at the end. THey were painted Model Master Aged Concrete. (The fill strip is glued to the foam but not the rest of the wall as I still haven't quite figured if the hill will be deeper or not. (aka Will the layout get yet another expansion in that direction? Maybe it will end up as two lift gates.)

Another shot of the ferry yard area. I have decided to improve the shape of these hill as well. The dark gray in the pictures is a fresh application of the ground newspaper that I use for scenery. The other full piece of the L-shaped foam and the partial piece are both here as well as two other blocks of foam that I also found at work (My boss is very permissive when it comes to taking the styrofoam pieces. The blocks were originally destined for the hill already pictured but I changed my mind.) and few other scrap pieces I found around the layout. As the shapes had to be built from various pieces, they are just sitting on the hills. They will be glued on next week as well.

Didn't do a lot on the layout this week as I had to do a few other things at home for Mom & Dad. (Seal a few leaks in the trailer house roof and helping Mom dig a hole to bury the ashes of a cat that had to be put down due to FIV, which is feline AIDS. Mom couldn't bear to just throw his body away, and at the time, it was too cold to bury him, so Mom had the vet cremate him.)

 Eveing Diners

Flo, Ed, Tom and I will have a Beer please

Work was peaceful today which is not a good thing. Sigh But the Ding Bat was not there! Yes There has been no fallout from me Nuking Nancy. Seems it is Company Turdition it was just my turn.

yougottawanta
Help me understand. If a company has incentives to encourage selling of a certain product arent you doing exactly what they design the program to be or do ?

YGW Yep, that is what the goal is! They are a hight pofit iteam so they can pay a good spiff on them. What Nancy does not understand is a higher purches amout does not net more profit. I all so go out of my way to show spiff mattress even if a customer say I don't want Memory Foam, Pillow Top or what ever they think they don't like. Most sales person will show them what they want, not what they may really need. That is what Nancy does.

Good 80% of my customers will buy what I know they need and they don't come back for a reslection.

Tom I have work for three good Managers in my life. But I will add I was upper managment for 20 years or so. I would like to think I was a good one. Lowest turn over rate in company for manangers and personal. I could do every thing the crew could (in Auto Body) from body work to Auto Painting as good as them.

 Later, Ken

Good evening all.

Chloe - I will take a RBF please. Thanks.

Ken - Wheel slippage on a steam locomotive due to lubricant? Reminds me of a video I seen awhile back. Whistling

YGW - LG Black Stainless appliances. (Roughly 80% of the sales Sunday and Monday!) Also, I am glad the new equipment operator is more pleasant to work with. Take some of the stress away from your heart. I threw some "misbeats" in the hospital one time during asthma issues, boy, they didn't mess around after that!

Ulrich - Congrats on the upcoming anniversary! I Hope you and Petra are still going strong much longer. (Although, anymore, 30 is nothing too common!) Maybe I am "old fashioned", but, I feel, if you promise to love someone, come what may, you fulfill that promise. (And, there are strong reasons to do so, but I will not get into them here.)

Weather - Cooler and wetter today, and forecast is cooler yet tomorrow.

W**k - Not only did I hit the sale of the weekend in all the stores by the owner that I work for, but, I hit a tripple digit bonus because of it! YAY! Big Smile We did more than double our sales goal for that weekend, and sit well ahead of goal on the month now. Now, we just need to keep advancing through the region contest. (And, keep our sales up.)

Trains - Somehow, I have a boxcar that I applied flat clear sealant to that got "chalk-ish" colored, but on only a couple of panels... And only one side, and a sindgle corner of the roof.... Weathering will hide it, but thought it was weird. The next car I thinned the clear flat a bit more, and it worked fine... But, still seems slightly odd.

Lit will easily be fixed with the weathering powders/PanPastels though, so, no harm , no foul, as they say.

Hope all are well, and all have a good night!

Say I remember a few months  ago a few of you, I think Ken and Mr.B., were talking about which security system to use with XP now that MS is no longer supporting XP. I also think there was a discussion about which web browser to use too. Well as of today, MS is no longer supporting Vista which is on an old laptop we have. It still works fine, but slow, and I would like to have it available to use. Can any of you advise me as to which security system you use with XP and which browser?  Thanks for any help.

Hi, Charlie,

There are websites out there that archive old versions of downloadable software. For a web browser I would suggest Netscape, which was the predecessor of Firefox. Take a look at OldVersion.com and pick which version to download: http://www.oldversion.com/windows/netscape/

They have a page of downloadable security software, as well, though I don't know how much good an old security program will do you without up-to-date virus/malware definitions.

Good morning. Just a quick cup of hot chocolate before I start on some of the day's activities.

Unfortunately, it's time for springtime yard work. There's a terracing project that I started last summer. It has been on hold during the winter, but I guess I can't put it off forever. It won't complete itself. Once that is completed, Samson's outdoor dog run will be a lot better. Of course the grass needs mowing after the winter, and the vegetable garden needs a lot of work.

Ken, I only had a few very wise bosses in my time, but one of the wisest told me "The customer is NOT always right. We do our job every day, and we know it far better than the customer does. But the customer is always the customer." The trick is to serve and educate the customer without making them feel stupid. Of course it's often difficult because some aren't educable.

YGW: Yes, Marshall is just about due south of Hagerstown. It looks like the most direct route is Interstate 81 from Hagerstown to Winchester, then route 17 to Marshall; or 81 to 66, then east to Marshall. Either way, it's just under an hour & a half.  I have an old friend from work who still lives in Front Royal, so I get down that way now and then. He is still working as an Amtrak chef.

I recently heard from my ex wife, who lives in Arizona. We don't see each other often, but we have a pretty cordial relationship. It's kind of funny that we have been better friends before and after our marriage, but not so much during. Go figure. She was remarried many years ago, and just lost her husband in an accident last week. In the midst of planning his funeral, she found out she has breast cancer. I'm trying to be supportive, but it's pretty hard to know what to say, or how to be helpful.

Gotta move on. Everybody have a great day!

Tom

Good Morning,

A sunny one out there today with about 35F for a temp. Lots of Juncos in the yard still. They sure do eat a lot. I had to go and purchase another 25 lb. bag of shelled sunflower seeds.

I finally ran trains for a little while on the N scale. I need to get a decent high stool to sit on in that room as the table is quite high.

Not much on the agenda today. We might try to do a little yard clean up but it won't be much as the frost is still coming out of the ground and will be for some time. The ice in the pond has nearly melted so hopefully by the weekend I will be able to get it pumped out and start the waterfall. We need it to attract the Warblers that will soon start coming through.

Have a nice day,

CN Charlie

Morning all. Flo can I have cup of good stramh coffee with a bit of N&W coal dust and shot of 2884 Steam. This week is starting off better.

Going to the electric heart doctors tomorrow to see if or what they want to do about the electric issues in my heart today. I really hope this doesnt involve yet another surgery.

Hobby room. I have been blessed this week with some unexpected stuff. Monday the insulator had some left over bags of insulation and he left the extra vs. throwing them away, the drywall hanger had four sheets of drywall left over from a house and he gave those to me vs. throwing them away and I called the hardware guy to see if he had any surplus keyed door knobs and when I inquired how much he donated those to my Hobby room. What a blessing !

At w**k I removed the headache excavator and he has been replaced and now things are going much better. LOT SMOOTHER ! Thank God for that the other guy created some real headaches and cost us a LOT of money.

Ken - Help me understand. If a company has incentives to encourage selling of a certain product arent you doing exactly what they design the program to be or do ?

Jim - I completely understand why you retired. For me there are still more good days than bad days. For the most part I really like the men and women I work with. The Hispanic guys are fun to be around too. They have this great sense of humor and find much to laugh at.

Ricky W - What is selling so well in your sales ? Congrats on doing so well !

FRRYKid - What is cottage fries ? That is such a true saying ! Get one done three created . That is my life right there.

Galaxy - I had heard that saying before but I didnt know the back story. Thanks for sharing

Ulrich Congrats on the life long marriage Bow Bow Bow No you should not stop ! How is Petra doing today ? I hope making progress. Your new love afair how much is she ?
