Good good very early AM Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have a cup of Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.

Got my latest MR.  Nice feature on the beer line project railroad, and other good stuff.

YGW:  Angelino is short for Los Angelino, or a resident of Los Angeles.  I used to live there.  When Dennis mentions a location or something, I pretty much know what and where he's talking about.  Not that it matters.  Sorry though, I wasn't trying to exclude anyone.

Actually, my forum name, handle, whatever, was chosen because of a UP GP30 that I took a picture of in the yard trackage near the SP Glendale shops.  The number of the locomotive was 831, hence my handle.  A meaningless bit of trivia.

I often still miss LA, just not everything about it.  However, whenever we go back for a visit, one of our first stops is always In-n-out Burger.  Truly a treat.

ED: That's a very nice brass tower.  It looks like a yard tower for lights to light up a yard at night.  Are you going to add lights to it?

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

Thank you, UP831! Yes

Yes, that's my plan. I have seen quite a few of that style of tower in the larger yards and shop areas. In fact, I just posted a photo in the Prototype Info. thread that showed just such a tower.

Neat stuff!

Here's a link to the kit: http://alkemscalemodels.biz/yard-light-towers/

I have a theory that there really isn't anything new, just refinements of old ideas.

Is anyone familiar with the Moonlight towers of Detroit, Michigan? Are these really any different than the high powered, super tall light towers we have at highway junctions today?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonlight_tower

Charles F. Brush demonstrated his arc light on such a tower in Cleveland, Ohio in 1878.

Thanks for the encouragement! I'll keep photos coming on the progress!

Ken,

Here's a couple for you! B&O 4652 still in Bessemer paint but lettered B&O! You CAN have your cake and blow your own horn, too! Or however that saying goes...

Have a great day, everyone!

Hey all

Bill - What paint method will you be using ? Spray ? Compressor ? Can ?

YGW

I "stewed" on this one for a long time.  Several actual Dunkirk locomotives went to logging rrs in North Carolina, and that is how one of them found its way to my line in the mountains of Southwest Virginia.  I had bought the NWSL HO Dunkirk last winter and found that it would often lock up when running in reverse.  I sent it out to Phil "The Shayfixer" Floyd and he trued up the trucks so that it runs great.  I thus had a substantial investment in the tiny model, and I recognize that painting it would likely actually reduce its value -  but still it didn't look right shuffling around the sawmill in "brass".

I finally fell on the compromise of just painting and numbering.  If I don't letter it for my road it would not automatically need a full repainting by some future owner.   I do not have an airbrush, so this was Testor's flat black, then decal numbers, then Testor's dullcoat.   I am rather pleased with the result.

V8Vega:   Agree with notes to check with a physician.   It is not listed as an expected side effect, but I have been prone to dizzy spells since surgery for prostate cancer.   Mine seems to be always connected to dehydration;  drinking lots of water every day keeps it away.

So, you see, the LION went to Dickinson for a doctor's appointment, all well and good, then he went to do some errands. Then him slipped on the Ice in Menard's parking lot and broke the leg of him. The Fibula down near the ankle. Now him has a splint, and needs to see an orthopod.  Him not happy, and him cannot get to the train room until it heals.

I think I will take a nap.

Maybe him can find a helpful mouse, like the one who took the thorn out of him's paw so long ago, to handle things that require going up and down of stairs.

Sending best wishes that him heals quickly.

Good morning, everybody ...

I'll have coffee and a sticky bun please.

We were in Murray on the other side of the lakes yesterday. I never had time to get back in the forum later yeasterday.

Ed ... The "patched" B&O F7 is interesting. .... Your cat looks very nice. .... We have a trio of cats rescued from 3 states (KY, TN, and OH).

Bill .... Your #1 looks nice, and I bet it is fun engine to operate on the layout.

Der .... Your trackwork looks good. .. Glad you finally were able to upload into PhotoBucket. It was challenging. I got help figuring it out from Dave here in the forum, and would not have done that without his assistance.

M L C .... Evidently the dought is over. A lot of rain over the past several days.

Lion ..... Sorry to hear about your broken leg. I had to get my sticky bun from another source this morning.

Good Morning,

We are in the middle of a blizzard here. High winds and a fair amount of the white stuff. Luckily we did our errands yesterday afternoon and so we can just watch it out the window. I sure hope there isn't too much more snow as I have to be at the hospital tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. for a pre- surgery meeting. It is about a half hour drive to the other side of city in good conditions so I will need to allow at least an hour especially as I will be going part of way in rush hour traffic.

Lion, sorry to hear about your fall. Lions are tough so I expect you will be leaping about soon. At least you don't have to go chasing wildebeests for your dinner, you have monks who can do that.

I think more coffee is in order.

Hello all

VERY Busy day. I wasted a WHOLE day doing other superintendents job walking ONE of their houses, making a very LONG list of missed items, incomplete or needing adjusting in the process. I get VERY ANNOYED when I walk into a house when it is like that ! Puts me in a really foul mood.

Train front - We have scheduled the ftg inspection for Monday. Been raining the last two days. At least no blizzard ! Like CN Charlie is having !

Lion - Geez that is awful. Hope you heal quickly. Worse I think is not being able to get to the train room !

Der - Check PM

Ulrich - Oh gee is that Broom hilda sister - the nurse ? She looks like my old physical therapist "Mrs. Pain" oh she lived up to it too !

CN Charlie - Blizzard ? Already ? We are getting lots of rain here !

Garry - Unvite Mr. Murray !

Lloyd - Well for one I am impressed ! I have never been able to paint well from a can.

Ed - Is the color of those B&O pink ? Or is that a result of old photo fade ? That is one nice looking kitty

UP831 - Oh now I understand - Didnt feel excluded. I am just curious by nature.

FRRYKid - Nice I hardly ever win a raffle !

Ken - 10 -4 will do

Mr. B - What a shame. It seems like the things we like best we are allergic to.

V8 - Have you gone to the doctors yet ?

Rob - Well that is disappointing - when I was younger I always thought JD was teh best made and maintained. I am sure it is very frustrating for you ! Not to mention expensive.

Ricky W - Hmmm yea you may need to say something to that "other guy" I would say something nice in short order to let him know his mistake cost others money !

Lion I just told V8 not to break a leg and there you go.  Garrison Keilor said you mid westerners were built with a low center of gravity to avoid that.  Big Smile

The good Lord gave us two bones there so you probably won't need surgery, especially since they sent you home.

Get well soon, but for now ice and elevation and don't freeze it.

Cold and rainy all day, ice storm in Western MD, far away from me.   Got nothing done in the way of MR, did get to the gym.

Lion,

Sorry to hear of your accident, wishing you a fast recovery. No wildebeest here to send to you, closest thing we have is Bertha, she runs the bait shed on the wharf, revisit Ulrich's post with the nurse, add a cigar and yellow oilskins.

I do have some salt cod, you will need a quantity of Haffenrafer if you eat it. Either before, with, or definately after.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed will have a Crown Royal, Rob a Coffee in a UP cup, Lion 2 gallons of wildebeests and noodle soup and I will have a Beer please.

Lion can't him get the brothers to carry you up to the subway room? If there is a bathroom and and if the brothers will bring him wildebeests stew, just him live in the subway room. Yes

Ed Intresting photo X Bessemer's. I was as well wondering if the photos made the engines look pink.

C&N Charlie. A blizzar would be a great reason to stay home to a point! I love snow and like the sound of the wind. But when I was 15 I went to visit my Ant in Minnesota and saw a 12 foot snow drift, well that is a tad to much.

YGW I did not check my E Mail tonight so if there are photos sorry about that.

Train Front Life sort of got in the way of getting the Might B&O F7's back on the line. Did start or shoud I say fix a old badly done project last night. When I first started trying to weather rolling stock I really screwed up a pair of Athearn Lehigh Valley 50' box cars. Looks like a 5 year old painted there faces. Slowly get the dull coat off and starting to look like a little something. Might get it back on the rails in a few days. Why, have no clue?

 Later, Ken

FRRYKid - Nice I hardly ever win a raffle !

First time in the three times I attended that convention I had participated in that raffle.

Minor annoyance: Discovered while I was trying to type this that I had to play "pick-up sticks." (Pick up the spilled toothpicks. Use them for stirring paint, applying glue in small places, etc.)

Hobby Front:  Found a few more options on the engine front. Just waiting for funds.

Good morning ..

A moment of silence in rememberance of Pearl Harbor Day.

CN Charlie .... What is the date for your upcoming surgery. I don't recall when. Prayers already for a successful operation and quick recovery.

Dennis ... I guess the lob wait at the county office was worthwhile since you got a copy of your deed.

Bear .... I don't think those critters are sincere . LOL

FRRY ... I know what you mean. Toothpicks are useful for many things.

Lion .... How as the soup from Steven ? ... Looked good to me.

Everybody ..... Happy model railroading ....

Mornin' folks!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of hot oatmeal with brown sugar and a pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee Please and Thank You!

Well Lion, the Gnus from you wasn't very good, but I hope all that Wildabeast Noodle Soup that has been sent to the Monestary in your name helps out!  Here in Geneva, NY we do have a temperature....  Currently 41° F outside.  Sn*wed last night (couple inches) but that is quickly melting off.  Sun comes out every now and then so I should see a few kWh od electric before sundown from the panels.

I know that today is the 75th. anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and will appropriately honor the day from that standpoint, but did you know there is another important anniversary concerning trains today as well?  Today, 75 years ago, the latest rendition of the NYC's Empire Express took to the rails!  The R&GV RR Museum owns all the remaining cars of that set and use them for our yearly Fall foliage Runs on the LA&L.  Here is a shot of the Baggage Car (Alonzo) and the two that were back in service in 2011.  (We now have 3 coaches repaired and inspected for interchange Service with one more in the set being finished up in the coming year, we hope.)

Hope you all have a safe and pleasant day out there!

Hello all

Will write more later super busy. Have to walk a house tomorrow with an owner, another for close in inspection tomorrow, two other finished units just sold with major changes Bang Head , one with an elevator being installed, one with plumber roughing the house in and the carp made major mistakes, one more we are getting ready to paint custom colors, on site we are installing a new sales parking lot.....Phew makes me tired just thinking about all of it !

Train front - New problem. We are about a 1' short of the bottom and the excavator is saying he can not go any further with the current how ram. May need a BIGGER hoe ram Hmm Will be meeting him later to discuss. I thought that Hoe Ram was a bit small for that HUGE rock.

Ken - I took individual photos of the plans last night and emailed them to you. The photos didnt have the best light but for now folks can get a sense of what the Barn train room looks like.

Godd Evening Folks!

Aside from the 75th anniversary of the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor, ist is also the day of the 181th anniversary of the opening of the first railway in Germany! And my dad´s 90th birthday. I wish he were still with us!

In 1978, I visited Pearl Harbor and did the Navy cruise to the USS Arizona Memorial. It´s a strange thought that my visit dates back more years now than the number of years which had passed by from the sinking of the battleship to my visit.

Join me in a silent prayer for those 1,177 men who lost their lives serving on the USS Arizona.

I went to my friend´s place to finish the Christmas layout for his grandson. Everything is up and running now and in good order! I gave the locos a check-up, cleaned the wheels and carefully lubed them, as they had been stored for 20+ years. Grandsome is going to get a really grand gift!

Lion - IIRC correctly this is not the first time you broke a limb! Take care, friend!

Have a happy one!

Lion - Best wishes for a complete & speedy recovery. I was surprised to hear of your accident though, as I thought lions were more agile than that. You weren't partaking of any of that formented fruit I've seen monkeys & elephants doing in videos were you? Smile, Wink & Grin

I've been playing with my new Dell laptop for the past 2 days. Wow, what a learning curve with Windows 10. I miss my Windows 7 already. Windows 10 has done an excellent job of hiding things I want to do, or making them a lot more complicated. I'm just hoping my old laptop lasts until I get the hang of things. I even bought a book on Windows 10, but it turns out that most of my menus & how to do things are different. It seems that this past August a big revision called the "Anniversat Update" was released, & that's the versioin I have. Nothing is going easy at this point. I need to find some 10 year old kid to show me how to get a handle on this project. As far as the laptop itself, I'm more than pleased with the purchase. Turned out to be a good deal. Same with the new HP printer too.

Seems the wife didn't want to be left out of this purchasing spree. Her hand mixer went belly up yesterday, & she was complaining about something else, but I tuned her out at that point.

It's only 40 degrees out here, but after lunch I'm getting the lawn mower out & run it over the yards. Mainly to get the leaves up. easier than raking.

Looks like I'm Top of Page, so place your orders gents!
This was begun sometime on Monday – so please excuse old news.
A Russian Caravan tea, black please Chloë – and speaking of things black; Penny (preventing me from keeping my feet warm under the computer desk) says Hello to Ed’s Penelope.
She was called Jet by the lady who rescued her (roadside drop off – just hate that!) But Penny Black is a famous postage stamp
Christmas Cards done in reasonable time – we trimmed the list some a couple of years ago, postage is now quite exorbitant here, especially for overseas. Also, housework deferred, about which I am not heartbroken!
Rob:
***Der, I like your track story. I call those: A Happy accident! Nice to see you working on the layout.
That’s much my view as well – “make lemonade” so to speak. It helps if the glass is set on “Half Full”!
Hey, for 4 C notes, you could pick up a BLI Brass-hybrid  I-4-C 4-6-2 with V1A Vandy Tender.
You are doubtless correct, but the operative here is “could”. Wrong Scale, wrong era!Smile, Wink & Grin  BTW, how did those grain silos work out on the layout?
CG:
That's one thing. Another is excessive nasal drainage, which seems to affect those of us who can be described as elderly (gah, I hate that term) in ways that don't impact younger folk. You might have to go onto something like Flonase to help eliminate it.
On the “elderly” thing, maybe if we hadn’t stopped teaching the young to respect their elders, the word wouldn’t have such negative connotations! Time was when children stood up when an adult entered a room (but then also time was when men stood when a lady rose to leave; and how many of us do THAT anymore?); also, those same children did not speak until spoken to. Ah well! Sigh
Ken: Now that Photobucket has let me both access my account, and upload, I offer you this snowbound beauty: BTW, that curve you posted on Monday of the CP line in the Rockies is a noted Railfanning site!
Ed: That light tower is indeed an impressive soldering job.Bow
I have a theory that there really isn't anything new, just refinements of old ideas.
– an view shared over two millennia ago – See Ecclesiastes 1:9 !
LION: Sorry to hear about your misadventure. Prayers for your swift and accurate recovery.Angel
Garry:
Der .... Your trackwork looks good. .. Glad you finally were able to upload into PhotoBucket. It was challenging. I got help figuring it out from Dave here in the forum, and would not have done that without his assistance.
Thanks, and I haven’t yet tried any other upload route than the “First Square” solution! But at least PB does open in my account when I click the link. Hopefully they have been able to sort the endless Log In loop for one and all.
CN Charlie:
We are in the middle of a blizzard here. High winds and a fair amount of the white stuff.
Expecting a dump on Monday from a “developing system, which was last night in the New Mexico region! Yikes! Tomorrow may be a smaller sampling….Hope all your medical consultation nd procedures go well.Angel
Henry:
Garrison Keilor said you mid westerners were built with a low center of gravity to avoid that.
“Leaning slightly to the North West” as well IIRC Funny man that!
Dennis:
All I had was my property tax bill, absolutely nothing else so I was afraid of big complications and problems, even impossible to get a copy.
…when we came to sell a property earlier this year we couldn’t find the deed either. I had the same concerns as you – but no worries, it’s all on electronic file, and our lawyer produced a copy just like that! Great relief – I know how you feel.
Regarding Dec 7th. and Pearl Harbour, the BBC World News had this http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38216087 A somber reminder of that, and all which followed.
Lunch time and then we’re off for a “do” in our old stomping grounds. Probably won’t be in again today.

A moment of silence in rememberance of Pearl Harbor Day.

Let us not forget the events of this day 75 years ago. (I read an article a few weeks ago that there are 5 military survivors of Pearl Harbor still living.)

Hobby Front: Got a little further on the combo box. One of the people in a FB group I am in offered me a set of the offset NP lettering that is unique to this size of car. I took him up on the offer as I hadn't been able to find anything similar. Getting yet a few more ideas with the U25 that are relatively inexpensive that allows me to keep the existing Rivarossi drives.

Extra strong coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please and thanks.

***YGW, the older J.D's are great machines. My only issue is with the mechanics.

***Der, the awesome silos are still sitting on the layout where they will eventually be planted. I know, takes me forever to get much done. Once the new benchwork is finished and the old section of layout is raised (still not sure how I'm going to do that), I will finish up those detailed areas.

Healing thoughts to those in need.
