Lion - Fascinating ! What is "feast of baptism" ? Thanks for sharing.

Ah, yes...

Well first you must understand that there are more than 356 saints in the church. Number is actually in the many thousands. So who gets to have a "feast day". Most of them do not. Most days in fact are feral days, meaning that they have no saint associated with them in the Roman Calandar, although a local bishop or priest may wish to celebrate one of these saints on their "feast day".

So beyond feral days, there are "optional memorials" where it is the pastor's option to celebrate that feast or not." Then there are "Memeorial Days" thse must be celebrated, but they are still only "one-candle" days The get special hymns and prayers at mass, at morning prayer and at Vespers.

After that there are "Feast Days" these are "two candle" days, they get the proper hymns and prayers at Mas, and the bet special hymas and psalms at Morning Prayer, noon prayer and at Vespers.

Then there are Solemnities, and these are "three-candle" masses and they get all of the perqus of the Feast with the addition of the Gloria and Profession of Faith at Mass, and a second reading before the Gospel.

To the Feast of the Baptism, a rememberance of the Lord's baptism in the Jordan is celbrated on the second or third Sunday after Christmas, depending on how those sorts of things are counted, and what diociese celbrate Epiphiny when. Epiphany used to always be on the 6th,  but not it has been moved to a Sunday.

LION, not being a priest, really pays little attention to such stuff. He just does whatever the monks are doing that day and troubles himself not at all with the detail.

The Feast of the Baptism is the official end of the Christmas season and ordinary time resumes on the Monday after, with a return to Green vestments, although once upon a time the Christmas season used to end on the Ceast of Candlemas on February 2nd. We still celebrate Candlemas here at the Abbey no matter what day it falls on, I am not sure if parishes bother with it at all.

My church would always use "Oh Come, Oh Come Emanuel" for the lighting of the Advent wreath candles each year.

Most churches do, but you can google an interesting history on the O-antiphons.

We sing "Drop down dews Heavens from above" as our antiphon for each week's candle. And we do it a lot better than the ones I saw on you-tube.

Br Elais you mentioned selling bread, which reminded my of the Bread Monk, who used to have a PBS TV show.  I see he is a Benedictine but in IL.  Is there such a thing as a visiting monkship?  You could fix their computers and he could bring you pumpernickel.

I mean no disrespect.  Unllike many of you, my family was Jewish/Catholic and estranged from their respective religions.  Nevertheless I can appreciate the tremendous commitment you have made in your life and the little insight you give us.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed will have a Royal Crown on the rocks and I will have a Beer please.

Work Front Ever get lonely at work? Yep, I should be a Maytag Repairman. Have to be my age to get that joke.

YGW I just read your post and I will be happy to post your photos. I have not checked the PM's or E-mail yet. If you don't mind, I may try to set up a Photo Bucket account for you. While I have not had the problems posting photos or up loading them my computer bogs down in photo bucket. I all so get pop ups if I stay on the site to long. Main reason I don't post as many photos as I use to.

Kid That was funny, kind of surprised Lion did not say something about.

Sleepuh...hey...what?...ConfusedOh, I see we've made the move to our December siding. Haven't slept that well in years. Perhaps it's time to stoke up the wood stove in the corner. Mint tea in a Durango & Silverton mug, please and thank you.

The remaining new train stuff arrived today. Will report on all that another time.

Engine saga moves on. The Athearn U-boats I had in mind are too new for the units that the BN had. I did find a pair of alternative engines (U25C 70s era Rivarossis) but I have no idea if the shells can be adapted to a different drive. (The Rivarossi drive is not very good.) Both problems had been inquried about.

I also got my Black Friday train order: 3 bags of turf (ground cover under the trees), track ties for more eventual crossings, and the needed bottle of paint for one of my boxcar projects. The cleaner unit showed up on Wednesday (earlier than expected).

Where is everybody ?

Right here.  I woke up this morning and the wife had arranged for the cleaning lady to be here.  Yuck.  She will make a racket with the vacuum cleaner for hours, and when she's gone the whole house will smell like a swimming pool locker room.  It's 43 degrees out and I've got windows open and fans running in my bedroom upstairs to flush out the chlorine smell.

Mr. B. .... Glad to see you are here.

FRRY ..... The current production Rivarossi U25C's may be what you want. They are comeplely redesigned models which have good reviews. They are expensive, and you may have to save up your money before buying any of them. They have NP and CB&Q. I m not planning on acquiring them for my railroad becasue my most modern locomitves are SD24's. Rivarossi is now affiliated with Hormby in the UK. Google "Hornby Trains" for info. They sell both HO and N models of the U25C.

Good morning, Boy is it cold in Southern California!!!

Work the next 4 days, then have 3 days off.

Yesterday was My Birthday!!!   Time to play "Las Mananitas"!

It's a traditional mexican version of Happy Birthday.

I play it sporadically during the year as well.

With all this listener overlap and repetition on the radio today, I'm hoping to see the advertisers wake up in time and start wanting stations with a 55+ age demo, so CH can have add some additional "Flavors" in the format as well as 60's/70's tunes that still work with these older demos.

That my personal little fantasy on the subject.  Will it happen?  Time will tell....

It's too bad the Southeast and the Northeast sell poorly in terms of Passenger Trains, but get high marks regarding Freight Cars.    The Southeast seems to be a poor seller as well, while the Southwest, Northwest, Midwest/Central have High/Moderate scores.

Problem is, as most engines like that are, I sure they're limited production. Given that I would like two and the already mentioned budget, I doubt that is even possible. Given that I have gotten very good at mating shells to drives that they weren't designed around (my 8 Tythearn GP20s and a Bachthearn GP30, all with the Athearn GP35 drive), I am exploring getting the 70s era Riv U25 shells to mate with a frame and power it that way.

ATSFGuy! May I ask how young you have turned?

Nothing much to report from this end of the Big Pond. Just another cold, but sunny day. Daytime high was not much above freezing and right now it´s already down to -6°C again.

I spent a couple of hours this afternoon at my friend Lothar´s place for a cup of coffee and some train talk. He should me his latest w*rk he had done on his layout and we chatted a bit about this and that before I went home again. It gets dark early up here - at 4pm it is already pitch black. Driving home I saw all the Christmas decorations and lights people have adorned their houses with. Most of what I have seen fails to meet my taste. I don´t like those cold white LED lights - they just don´t give me that warm Christmas feeling.

Oh boy, I am ranting again! I certainly have turned into a grumpy old man these days!

Thinking of that hymn again caused me to download the tablature from harptabs.com to see if I can play it on harmonica.  Seems best in "G", and I think I can get it to work.

Currently at that delightful point where I finished a major project (painting a brass HO Dunkirk locomotive) and can select the next project from the multiple choices.   Rainy days forecast here at the beach for Monday & Tuesday, so will have to pick.

Hello fellow diners,

I'll take a turkey wrap with bacon and honey mustard. Plus, mozzarella sticks. And a tall beer.

I moved out of my parent''s house and into a 3br apartment in Lancaster city, only a few blocks from my parent's home. I like the place, which feels more like a house than an apartment, quite a bit so far. Moving is now on my list of least favorite activities, it's such a horrid chore, and I don't even have a lot of stuff.

On the MR front, I bought a TCS Wow decoder to put into a BLI Paragon2 K4s with a burnt out decoder. The smoke unit is out, as is the circuit for the chuff sync. Now I just need to figure out where all the other wires and their leads go, so I don't fry the Wow decoder. My main hangup is where the left rail pickup is on the model itself. I'll get people I know more versed in hardworking decoders to help me out.

 1. Trains with "Green scores" have high appeal, get used often.

 2. Trains with "Yellow scores" have moderate appeal, get used a little bit.

 3. Trains with "Red/Orange scores" are considered negatives and get nothing.

Where did that post come from ATFS? If you are just talking about colors, or when the colors where used?

 1. I have no green engines. Just do not feel drawen to green.

 2. Yellow is good. I like UP and if yellow with blue counts, well if it is B&O I run the heck out of them. Santa Fee Warbonnets all so have yellow, they are still Yes for me.

 3. Orange, guess you don't like Bessemer (OK I never heard of them till Ed got me hooked on them) or Rio Grand.

YGW Couple things you can do to help me up load photos from my E Mail.

1 I can only up load IMG or JPEG to photo bucket. I cannot post PDF files, like your drawing.

2 Don't send ZIP Files. Send the photos individually. Takes me longer to take the photos out of the Zip so I can post them.

3 Use dates and photo number as it name. 12-03-16 1, 12-03-16 2. 12-04-16 3 and so forth. That is how I did Yard Wars photos. Easier to keep track of what I have up loaded to the Bucket.

Train Front Enjoying the fruit of speed matching the Bessmer SD7's and the Rio Grand. Pulling around 40 cars at a low speed. I would count them, but they are moving so slow, I would fall Zzz

Let me try again;

I was trying to point out that Southwestern Road names like SF, SP, UP, WP are very popular and releases are endless.

Northwestern/Midwestern Road names like GN, NP, SOO, MILW, RI, T&P, SL-SF, Mopac, MKT, SSW are considered okay and get released a little bit.

Southeastern Road Names like SOU, ACL, SAL, CofG, L&N, FEC have very low appeal among modelers and get nothing.

Does this make more sense?

Yes and no. Yes, your point is now more understandable, but that doesn't make it all that clear, or accurate for that matter.

I can't really tell if you are talking about locomotives, freight cars, passenger cars, or some vague mix of all of them. In any event, some road names appear with a higher frequency than others due to customer demand, perceived or real. That's just the way free enteprise works.

However, the South is not the wasteland of models you think it is. Just take a look at Bachmann's modern 4-4-0 offering.

One Seaboard, two Southerns, one L&N, Two B&Os, one GN, and a couple of unlettered. Southern railroads are the best represented group. Western railroads are omitted completely (GN doesn't count Smile, Wink & Grin ).

I think you are finding a marketing "plot" where none exists.

Good Evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have a cup of Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.

ATSF:  Yes, big western roads are well represented in locomotives and rolling stock, but so are the Pennsylvania, B&O, Conrail, and N&W, which were not listed.

i really think it evens out, and does it really matter anyway?  Most of us have our favorites, and can usually find something available, just maybe not everything.

However, the availability of decals and parts seem to be coming less available, which I think hurts the hobby in the long run.

My My 2 Cents

Good morning everyone.....

Wow, slow morning.... Nothing since last night (as of my typing this up anyways).... Ok.

Chloe, a cinnamon roll, and a glass of milk please. Thanks.

YGW - Glad you are (finally!) able to start on the new "train barn"!

Weather - Cooler here, but the real cool down is expected later this week, along with, possibly, heavy sn*w late week.

W**k - Decent day yesterday, while not crazy busy, and not many big-ticket items, did have a few nice sized sales. Had one customer come in, late in the day, just to have a second one come in right behind them, while I was there by myself, 1/2 hour before closing, but both were shopping off a gift request list, so both spent a decent amount. Made me get out a few minutes late, but pushed me over the minimum for a spiff, so it worked out. (At least for me anyways!)

Train front - Went to do a small addition on the sd40 project, and found my decal solution had dried up. (So that project has again stalled!) All the LHS in my area, save for one ~30 miles away, and in an area that I never have to go to for anything else, and ~30 miles the opposite direction from everywhere else I have had to go, were OOS. (Out Of Stock.) So, I had to order online, and that cannot be shipped USPS, so I had to pay booku shipping... (Never checked with the one ~30 miles out of my way, as an extra ~60 mile trip just for decal solution seemed silly at this point.)

Anyone ever try ModelMaster decal solution? I have never tried their brand of decal solution, as Microscale had always been available locally, and worked well for me. (Why fix what isn't broken?)

(I ordered it already anyways, Whistling, hoping the glass bottle won't "breathe" quite as much of the decal solution away.... My Thinking is, the Microscale plastic bottles let the solution breathe too much, thereby drying it up. Don't spoil my theory on that just yet! I like having dream bubbles every now and then, so try not to pop it! Smile Whistling I was just hopeful that someone out there has used it, and could comment, on any differences between it and other brands, results wise....)

My one LTS (Local Train Store) could not reserve (nor get) the locomotive I was interested in through their distributor, so a "cyber-Monday" order was placed (on Wednesday...) for it online as well. (Atlas newly announced B&P Geep....) Got a good enough price on it that I went for it. (Will be used on the transfer run from/to them on my layout, and occasional detour/run through.)

Next project will be a rebuilt customer siding on the layout. (Dry-bulk sand rail-truck transfer location, handling mostly frac-sand.) I have most of what I need for it, and ordered a few tree supplies with the decal solution to make the order worth my money's-worth. It will be "mostly" built as removable, in anticipation of a (possible) future move. (Craft plywood that will drop into place and be able to be lifted back out with a little ground cover removal.) On the plus side, building it on a movable base will allow better access to work on it.

Hope all are well, and all have a good day!

Good Afternoon!

Zoe, I´ll be going for a slice of oven-fresh apple strudel, with extra rum-raisins and hot & thick custard pured over it, thank you. Not to forget a gallon of coffee, please.

A quiet Sunday. Our noisy neighbors seem to have been gone for the day and I would not mind them staying longer wherever they are right now!

Nothing done today and no plans for the rest of it. My mind is just blank lately, without the chance of keeping a focus on anything for only a few moments. Kind of restless and uneasy.

A cold day is coming to end ...

Good Afternoon,

Rob, great to see you posting again. How is that tractor you bought working? I have only driven a Massey Harris 44 that the boat club I belonged to used to haul boats.

Not a lot new here. Getting ready for my return from the big op coming up in 2 weeks. Apparently I will be in for 5 or 6 days. The urologist doing the job told me on Thursday that he likes to make sure everything is fine before release hence the rather long stay for a 3 hour op.

The really warm weather we have been enjoying is about to end later this week. We had the warmest November on record so winter will seem a little shorter.

Garry, I plan on doing some RR work this month. I want to get down more ground cover on my N scale layout , hopefully all of it. Then it will be tree and shrub time. I have been running the HO a bit too. I kept 2 Red Caboose kits to build when I can't go downstairs after the op. They say I should be largely good to go in a month or so, here's hoping.

We had a new sofa for the basement room delivered on Wednesday afternoon and sent it back the next day. We had the store bring our old sofa back and I was glad to see it. It was like having an old friend return. It is far more comfortable than the new one even if it is old, as in 35 years. Never thought I would be nostalgic about a sofa.

Time for ground cover so I am heading down to me 'cave'.

Evenin' folks!

Janie I'll have the Talapia Fish Fry with french fries and a side of cole slaw.  Oh some dark roast decaf would be nice as well....  Yes use my R&GV RR Mug please.

Charlie, good luck with the proceedure coming up.  Good that you have some projects you can be doing while you are recovering...

I have been busier than a cat covering poop on a marble floor the last few days.  Saturday i spent over at a Scout Leader friends house (another comissioner) finishing up the online items for our two units to get rechartered on Wednesday.  The new Comittee Chair was there to actually learn the ropes for the computer stuff.  She took over in a matter of minutes and just got it done (quicker than the other guy and I could have done it!).  She is an occupational therapist and uses the computer often each day to file reports.....  Way beyond us old "ex Spurts"........  After we finished the chartering materials we talked for about an hour or so about the units and where we need to improve and how.  We also shared some history about the units and how they have been developing over the past several years and why.  The other Comissioner and I then drove over to Newark, NY to get the signature of the Head of the organization that "owns" the Pack and Troop.  After about 8 signatures and a lengthy talk about the health of the units, we went to lunch...  I finally dropped the other comissioner back at his house mid-afternoon and got home to get everything packed to be the "Jolly Old Elf" yesterday at the R&GV RR Museum for the "Santa Trains".  The runs went quite well and we had packed trains for 5 trips to the "North Pole" where I acted very surprised to have all the visiters during my busiest season of the year.....  Had my picture taken with a couple hundred kids (and adults...) and had a lot of fun!  Photo below:

Today I had to get to church early as the Family was doing the lighting of the Advent Wreath this morning.  Since my son had to work, Grandpa got to participate and do some of the readings and prayers.  Catching up with other items with close deadlines and grocery shopping took care of the afternoon....

Hope you all are having a great season.  Prayers for all in need!
