You have shown maturity in the handling of the problems at your former work place and you certainly deserve this new opportunity.  I wish you well there and hope you enjoy it and get the respect you should have.

Ricky:

Congratulations on getting a new (and hopefully better) job! I worked in retail management for a long time and you sound like the sort of person who we were constantly searching for but rarely finding.

Good luck for your future!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Garry - Drinking and driving never go well together. Even on a lawn mower. I know of a guy who was given a DUI on a riding mower !

In both Montana and North Dakota, a person can get a BUI (Biking Under the Influence) as bicycles are regulated under the motor vehicle code. Also in Montana, one can also get a RUI (Riding [a horse] Under the Influence even if the horse is driving!). Yes there are places in Montana that are that rural.

yougottawanta

FRRYKid - Have any pictures ?

Not yet. I will post pictures when I get completely finished with it. I figure it will probably be Monday or so before I get it finished between w*rk and all the stuff I have to do at the ranch as well as getting certain supplies that need to be ordered in. (Track should be here Monday.)

herrinchoker

The last FFG I worked on was The Sullivans, named  after the brothers ( five I think ) that were all serving on one destroyer, and were killed when the ship went down, early 1944?. This caused a change in the War Department not consolidating members of one family in one unit.

I did a quick wikipedia check and found out something interesting: The ship mentioned by herrinchoker is actually the second Navy ship to bear the name The Sullivans. (I didn't even know that.)

From wikipedia:

  • The Navy named two destroyers The Sullivans to honor the brothers: The Sullivans (DD-537 comissioned 30 September 1943) and The Sullivans (DDG-68 commisioned 19 April 1997). DD-537 was the first American Navy ship ever named after more than one person. The motto for both ships was "We stick together."
  • Al Sullivan's son served on board the first USS The Sullivans. His grandmother christened the first ship. The second USS The Sullivans was christened by Al's granddaughter Kelly Ann Sullivan Loughren.

Odd, but interesting facts.

Mornin' Diners!

I have been away a while and— wow! I see the menu has changed! Looks like I'll be having the fried mush with sausage gravy and two eggs, sunny side up! Lots of boiler-wash coffee for a chaser, please Flo!

cudaken
Ed Did we make you mad? Or just bored with the Dinner? Thank you for your answers on the main page!

Not at all, Ken. It just seems that the farther behind I got on all the news it was tough to find a jumping-in point. Lots to catch up on!

Mr. B. I'm glad you are getting the "itch" to work on model railroad projects! I enjoy seeing your work.

I see there has been some discussion about Liberty Ships. Not long ago I saw a movie called "Man From Frisco" which kind of showcased the methods of Henry J. Kaiser. Great film and a fascinating look into the birth of the Liberty Ships.

ROR I can sympathize with your neck pain to some extent. I have a "fixation" about finding the right pillow to sleep on. I believe many neck ailments are caused during uncomfortable and awkward sleeping posture. Some mornings I feel like my neck has been twisted like I was in an old Bugs Bunny cartoon! I'm glad to hear you're doing better.

Rick, That's great news about starting your new job. I hope it leads to a successful and long-lived career for you.

Moe Larry... I don't often whistle on the toilet but when I do...    Look Out Ick!

Garry— That tragedy with the mower is sure disturbing. My sister-in-law has a friend whose husband went out on a four-wheeler quad while his wife was out of town. She came home and couldn't find him around the house. Sure enough, he was in the woods with the quad on top of him! He must have been there for over two days! Um... alcohol was involved! He was a surgeon, maybe someone who should have known better?

Cats. I have been contemplating changing out some of my BLI sound units, too. I recently installed a Loksound decoder in an old QSI Life-Like 2-10-2. ESU doesn't quite have the sound files for US steam up to chuff. I like WOWsound for steam sound.

I first learned of the history of The Sullivans when I toured the Fletcher Class destroyer named after the brothers (DD-537) in Buffalo, New York back in 2003.

http://buffalonavalpark.org/exhibits/ships/

If anyone plans a visit to the Buffalo area they should plan a day at the Naval Museum Yes !

What a great bit of history. When I saw the scene in Saving Private Ryan where George C. Marshall learns of the death of the "Sullivan" (Ryan) brothers it really choked me up. Still does...

YGW, I gather that you are in some aspect of the real estate business when I read about your—sometimes stressful—encounters. If I may ask (as a relative new-comer to the Diner) what capacity you are engaged in? Just curious. It would help me understand your day-to-day tribulations.

Well, Train front...

I have a few friends visiting on November 11th so I'm trying to get a few things straightened up on the layout. I have had an open helix that is but bare plywood so I just decided to tackle the making-of-a-mountain to cover it up.

I have been busy with many other projects around the homestead and that has partly been behind my recent absence here...

I'll fill in the blanks as time permits.

Prayers and well-wishes to all Angel and I hope anyone reading this has a safe, happy and healthy day!

Regards, Ed

Not really sure. It was a little stiff for a couple of days, then last Wednesday, WHAM, it wouldn't move. Doctor said something (activity, position, etc.) had caused some inflamation and prescribed the course of cortisone.

Just curious.  Are you on a cell phone a lot?

Good morning . ( Sort of)

I waitied my entire life for the Cubs to get into the world series, and they lose the first game 6-0. ... Sigh

Except of that, things are okay.

Ed .... Sounds like somebody who should know better. I know a similar situation except it was a car accident caused by a drinking doctor. .... I do not like drunk drivers.

FR RY ... There are probably similar laws here which would include driving a tractor. Perhaps it does not apply if on private property, but I don't know. .... I guess it would be worse if my neighbor was drinking while operating a chain saw.

Enough of that.

With winter approaching, who has plans for working on their layouts? I am continuing work on my layout. I am building the final section which is large enough to be a stand alone layout. My rural scene is part of it, and there is much work remaining with other scens to be built.

Just curious. Are you on a cell phone a lot?

Cell phones are worse than sleeping on how your neck feels.  As you age there is degenerative arthritis everywhere, little bone spurs and the like, except there isn't much extra room in your neck.  If it's bad enough, you can have permanent weakness.

One grandfather died of black lung.  My earliest memories are his spray atomizer that looked like an old perfume sprayer.  My other grandfather died of a stroke.  In those days they treated hypertension with the Duke Rice Diet.  Oddly the diet became a treatment for obesity in the 1970's and is still around.

Friend of mine has a ship named for his grandfather.  He got invited to the lauching and gets copies of the ships' newspaper.

Found a new train webcam.  Chama!  http://www.coloradonewmexicosteamtrain.org/camera-portal-horizontal.htm

No. Maybe a couple of times a day, and almost always with headset. I try to keep the phone away from my head as much as possible.

I do think my pillow could be a contributing factor. I may be in market for a new one.

LUNCH TIME !Dinner Flo I am STARVING today give me a baked potato swamped with real butter, lots of sour cream, salt and pepper. Tbone steak cooked meduim, salad, hot buns, sweet ice tea w/lemon. Desert I will have a WHOLE apple pie with ice cream Smile, Wink & Grin

Garry - Layout this year ? I hope to be building teh layout starting in January if the dang permit will ever be issued Sigh

ED - I am a Senior Project Manager for a builder. We do it a bit different than most. We purchase the land, develop the land, design the houses, build them and then perform teh service work and bond release. Most builders do not do this nuts to bolts. Most buy finished lots put together by a "land developer" Our PMs perform the entire job from start to finish vs. being specialized in one area such as "front end superintendent or "back in superintendent" or "site superintendent"

FRRYKid - A county west of here a a guy got  DUI on a horse in the town.

Dave - My hat hoes off to you. Anyone who is a manager in retail has a special place in heaven. Dont know how you did that. It was my great grandfather not my grandfather. Thank God.

Herrinchoker - Did you ever get hooked ? Ten seconds is not very long ! Do you know anyone who did ?Thanks for expalining those terms.

Ken - Will she be okay long term after the surgery ? Hope your foot gets better .

Alvie - What part of Culpeper did you live in ? I used to live on the east side over near the Rappahonock river in Amissville area. I would not have thought the income would be that high in PA.

Richard - Hope your neck gets better soon. I have had enck issues in the past they are not fun!

Angel - How many sqaure foot is your layout ? N?HO ?

Todays history qoutes :

It has been a source of great pain to me to have met with so many among our opponents who had not the liberality to distinguish between political & social opposition, who transferred at once to the person the hatred they bore to his political opinions.

Thomas Jefferson

I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I traveled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.

YGW, I grew up in Amissville. Place right on 211 not far from 229 intersection. I lived there from age 1 in 1985, until I moved to Lancaster PA in 2005. My dad used to work for home builders in Northern Virginia.

Steve, that apple pie ala mode looks delicious.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, Ed and I will have a Beer please.

Not the best day off I have ever had.

1 Looked at the budget and credit card deibt. I need to make about a extra $125.00 a week to stay even at this point.

2 Need to take out $200.00 from savings to make the house payment.

3 My car battery was dead when I went to do my running. Not sure if it is the battery or if I left the interior light on. Had my big battery charger outside all ready so that was not a big deal

4 Tried to apply Dominos for part time but I think my appaction was high jacked I think?

5 Tried to reset the decoders in my BLI Blueline RSD 15. I swear at one point I could read and write the CV's with the PR-3?

YGW Not sure it will fix my daughter problem in the long run. Far as my feet? Whistling

Ed Great to see you in the dinner again. Thanks to you I now know how to program on the fly using Decoder Pro.

Trains are running great! They are hauling Butt, turning into a Train Race.

Angel - How many sqaure foot is your layout ? N?HO ?

If you're talking about the pause hold I been talking about for the last week. The layout was planned on a HCD. I model in N. Maybe I'll show a picture when it's almost done.

I found out with Walthers flyer email that the N Thrall 48' well cars are not coming out next month, but in January of next year.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could sure use a hot cup of decaf and a piece of that Apple Pie A'la mode that Steven broght in earlier....  Thank you Ma'am.

Been multitasking all day...  Spent most of it trying to correct a major problem on the spreadsheet that has all the addresses and gift information for the Scholarship Fund raising (MLK Committee).  Somehow a bunch of addresses got mixed up and were incorrect.  I think it had to do with when I disagregated the data for printing in the Scholarship Dinner Booklet last Spring...  Took me about 6 hours to get everything updated.  Right now I am skipping the Boy Scout District Committee Meeting.  There are only 27 hours in a day you know!

Talked with the gent who is the webmaster for our NMRA Division site.  The company we are with has made a whole lot of "Upgrades" (that is what they call it) that seem to be done only as a way to net them a whole lot of $$$$ and require us now to use and pay for proprietory software.  The webmaster is a dentist who simply does not have time to spend learning a whole new way of updating the site, so we have agreed to just let our page go (it needs to renewed very soon anyway) and see what can be done through the new Region once we get moved to them.  They may have a way for us to get a part of theirs to use....  I will be looking for someone who may have the skills to be a new webmaster as well...  Fun and games.

My son from Chicago arrives tomorrow late afternoon and we are planning to go out to dinner.  The rest of this weekend will be various celebrations for my #1 son to celebrate tunring 50!  I do feel very old.

Have some parts for a small wayside station kit in the paint booth drying.  better go and get them out of that.

Good evening all.

Zoe - Order of BBQ wings, a Coke, and, any more of that yummy looking pie Steven showed? I will take a slice. Thanks!

Garry - I will watch it with ya! Sorry, I know Cubs fans have been very long in their waiting... I enjoyed the game though! Smile, Wink & Grin

Waiting to see what records get broken next in the Fall Classic. (Aka World Series) Both teams broke a record, with Cleveland pitcher getting 8K's in the first 3 innings, and with the Cubs Schwarber getting his first hit of the year in game1. And, Cleveland's manager broke a record, going the most wins without a loss in the World Series, with a 9-0 record.

So far, looks like game2 will be in tonight, despite weather issues.

Cudaken - Might just be Sears..... But the Hometown version.... But I will never tell.... [;-)] Whistling

Dave - Thanks, now if someone will keep me! Hoping the new job lasts a long time... Getting kinda tired of hitting the bricks to look for new ones! First two lasted 4 and 10 years, respectively, last one just 1&1/2... Hoping for a bit longer this time!

Ed, Johnboy, others - Thanks! Hoping that it will be good.

Well, time to go back to the basesball game.

Hope all are well, and enjoy the night!

YGW

I only know one person snagged who is still alive today. He has a scar just inside his elbow, extending the length of his arm to just above his thumb. His saving grace was not wearing a long sleeve shirt at the time, otherwise the cloth might have prevented the hook from pulling through his flesh.

I was never hooked, I had a sprill on a traul cable catch the cloth on a shirt I was wearing, and came close to pulling me into a wench as I was hauling the net back to the boat. I pulled away, and ripped the shirt from my body. I still have the shirt to remind me how quick things can happen. There are many demons on a fishing boat that will grab, and kill you, if you loose focus, and you never know when. One of the few times I had a helper on the boat I had five feet of the mast break while lifting a bag of fish, somthing I had done countless times before. He was standing at the base of the mast behind the wheelhouse and the block, topmast, and steelwork landed less than three feet behind him. One step further aft and he would probably have been killed. One night on George's Bank I came up on deck to go on watch. We had been laying for some time dead in the water. What I did not realize that the sea state was such the other three on deck were unable to bring the net on board the boat. As I came out to the foc'sl the mate yelled for me to get the fish tackle and bring it aft to help bring the net in. The tackle line had a twist in it, and as I made my way aft, the captain started screaming "hang on, hang on, hang on" I looked aft and saw a queer sea starting to curl, 15-20 feet above the deck. To this day I have no idea what it was the other three hung on to when the  wave hit the boat. I had a death grip on the line, and as the boat rolled over onto her side I was washed overside, clipping my legs just below the knees on the rail as I went overboard. When the boat righted, I was sucked out of the water, and hit my legs as I passed over the rail the second time. I remember seeing a orange mass headed my way, the mast, and as I passed I grabbed it. It took two men to pry me loose from the mast. Not in the least ashamed to admit it. This was on a 84 trawler. Eventually we got the net on board, and lashed down. This was not the only time we got caught by the weather wizzards forecast.

Ricky ... Glad to hear you planned to watch the game.

YGW ... While waiting to start the layout, you can assemble buliding kits and other items that later will be placed on the layout.

Been busy with work and school for the past 7 days.

Got my History Midterm Exam and Essay back today:

75% (C) for the Essay and 139/150 (A) for the Exam. Whoo Hoo!! Big Smile

Halloween is 5 days away, which brings us to two 1/64 diecast vehicles.

The first one is based on a 40's Milk Truck decorated in scary graphics, real rider tires, and tampos.

It goes by the name of Dairy Delivery

Hotwheels Collectors.com Series 1,  Limited to 2,500!  (2002)

The second vehicle is based on the "DRAG-U-LA" model kit, a design by Tom Daniel for the TV Show The Mudsters. If you have this model, It's actually a coffin shaped car with a dome and engine, a plastic piece with two skulls on either side, and a chrome bat ornament on the front.

It goes by the name Rigor Motor

Photobucket and my computer kept running slow today for some reason. I will try uploading pictures tomorrow.

Does anybody else have model railroad projects planned for the winter months ahead ?

I have a sanding tower that has been needing my attention since this summer. Hopefully I can get it finished during the winter. I also have a freight car that needs weathering. I also have an engine that needs to have its cab reworked as well as rework the handrails. All of those are on the agenda.

Oh my GOSH !!!! DinnerSmile, Wink & Grin

STEVE - THANK YOU !!! I golly gee that WAS GOOD ! Oh how I LOVE apple pie with ice cream . There are still fireworks exploding in my brain cells from the reaction to my tast buds !!

Lion - You can have the wildebeast - TODAY I have ice cream!!! Here you want some ?. May taste good with wildebeast ?

Bill T - good morning to you also

ATSF - lol ! Drag U LA , Rigor Motor - Thats funy stuff !

Garry - Congrats on the Cubs win. Unfortuinately there is a LOT of details to be worked out yet. type of skylights, paint colors, shingle manufacture and type, final electric drawings, electric tie into existing structures, bids for insulation, doors, windows....And while this is going on we are finsihing the remodeling of the first floor of our house we are switching out all of the trim. We are changing to Adams trim and 5 1/4 OG base, chair rail, three piece crown....I hope to have all of this done by Christmas and THEN I can relax and focus on the train room. That was a good thought thought and I really appreciate the input!

Herrinchoker - Geez that is a LOT more dangerous job than I ever realized it was ! What causes a wave like that ? Our industry is fairly dangerous also. In my thirty plus years I have knwn of three men killed on site, anther four who will never work again and the ones that are temporaily maimed or hurt I cannot even count. It makes me shake my head in wonderment when I have so much trouble getting the men to do something as simple as wearing their hardhats !

Ricky W - Wow your industry sounds like mine. I know some guys who have had twenty different jobs in one year !!! I have been fortunate. I have been here a LONG time.

Howmus - Thanks for sharing your qoutes ! A different perspective is always good food for thought. I would add to a couple of your qoutes - To the first I would add - Listening - I have found as a supervisor, husband, dad etc... Listening to others point of view is incredible important. Your last qoute I could boil that down to the word - Hypocrite - There are a LOT of those running around these days from every walk of life. For instance a police officer writing tickets and then speeding about in his own car or a father who tells his children not to drink or smoke but he watches porn.

Angel - What is "pause hold" ? Are you Diesal or steam or transition era ?

Ken - Here is a Angel for your foot and daughter. Love to hear the trains are "racing" !

Alvie - I lived about a mile from the "old Bridge" Loved that home. We could walk to the river, had a vineyard across from our house that was beautiful, woods with walking paths...Out grew the place and needed more bedrooms. God blessed us with an even nicer home.

Happy Kalmbach Day! Around here, we call 10/27 Kalmbach Day because for many years, Kalmbach Publishing was headquartered in downtown Milwaukee, at 1027 N. 7th Street.

When we built our new building here in Waukesha, we petitioned the Post Office and were granted a street number of 21027 -- our 2nd 1027 address.

And to top it off, today's Cody Grivno's birthday! Happy B-Day Cody! He brought in donuts. What a guy!

herrinchoker's story makes my story of going to the podiatrist this morning to get the sides of my toenail ripped out seems like small pototoes.  Should have had it done 40 years ago.

When I get finished having my foot proped up, I am going to assemble a walthers switch tower.

Chama is now my favorite webcam.  They seem to have lower safety standards than Durango.  The guys in the yard don't wear orange and some civillian walked a pair of dogs right through the yard in front of one of the engines.  I can't get on Photobucket, but I got a great screenshot this morning of 2 deer crossing the yard with the engine at the water tower.

Morning diners,

Heartland Division CB&Q

Does anybody else have model railroad projects planned for the winter months ahead ?

I don't think so, I wouldn't know until late November or mid December.

Angel - What is "pause hold" ? Are you Diesel or steam or transition era ?

What I meant was. The layout phase is placed on hold. I spent a lot of money very quickly and got carried away. Until I have extra money again the layout will continue.

The small door layout will be between 1956-1958.  It is placed during the transition era. I'm planning on getting the new Kato FEF-3 #838. I do like steam locomotives, but I can't really hold one. But it will have several diesels like F3, NW2.

The diesel roster will be like this F3, F7, RS2, GP7, NW2. Hopefully I get 2B units to make a ABBA or ABB consist.
