Congrats on the new neighbors, Ray, but sorry you missed out on the firewood.  You said you're getting ready for a strawberry festival.  This wouldn't be this weekend's Owego Strawberry Festival, would it?  My in-laws are coming down for that because my F-I-L could live on steak and strawberries alone.  My wife, ironically, is deathly allergic to strawberries (think Linda Blair with pink pea soup), so she may not go.  Anyway, I may try to sneak away and take some pics along the Southern Tier line through town, just to get away from the crowds.  And next Fri is supposed to be my annual day to sit in a chair in the Syracuse area and take pictures of anything that moves on the CSX tracks.  About the only stress comes from screwing up a shot or getting crap from friends were I to not go to the Tilted Kilt to ogle waitresses as they do.

Lion - How did you go from being a warrior to a Monk to a Lion ? Whistling ? That is some transition ! Bruce Jenner has nothing on you !

Whale... I don't know that I was ever a warior. I was in the Navy, stationed on an aircraft carrier. Actually, I never was 'ship's company', my command was always with an air squadron, and I went where the squadron went. Since I was a cook, I always went to the gallery. Each squadron had two or three cooks assigned to suppliment the crew at what ever command we were attached to.

So when I got out of the Navy, I did odd thing (some really odd things) for a while, but during this time my call to the religious life grew, and eventually, I became a monk. My love for trains in general, and subway trains in particular just followed me to the plains of North Dakota.

As a monk, one stays in the monastery where you entered for life. No moving around like you would find in other orders. And monks are suggested to have hobbies, none apparend so elaborate as 14 miles of subway trains, but hobbies none the less. I do not get to spend much money on these trains, but it is less expensive than say golf or fishing. Fishing at 56c per mile for the sue of a car can be VERY expensive, not to mentikon the BOAT. One guy built a house boat and for years he got away with out having to register it because no officer ever belived that the thing would float.

So now, like our Muslim bretheran, I must head off to prayer, for we like they, do pray five times a day.

Uncle_Bob
You said you're getting ready for a strawberry festival. This wouldn't be this weekend's Owego Strawberry Festival, would it?

Nope...  This one is held here in Geneva, NY and is put on by my church (Presbyterian Church in Geneva).  This is our 62nd. Annual Strawberry Festival and Bake Sale.  I have provided live sound of sorts for the last 28 years I think.  I used to be able to bring my entire front end and monitor equipment and really do it up big...  That is what could be called overkill, but sure got the job done! Whistling  I kept a small system for this very task.  It only gets used a couple times a year.  Consists of 1500w amp, a pair of old Yamaha 15" stage monitors, the old mixer board from church, and some odds and ends of microphones pieced together to get it done.  Today looks like a great day for it so we should have a large crowd in attendance.

I will be checking to make sure I have everything packed for the show, do some weeding out in the garden, and maybe even get some trees planted on the layout today (while I am finishing the laundry).

Ulrich, love the videos.  May have time after I get home tonight to watch them all the way through.

Have a great day!

Hello all

So glad to see the folks invited joining us on a regular basis. Hope more show up.

Gonna be a busy day. Five inspections scheduled, three hour meeting, two serious structural failures to solve...Gonna be a long day..

Howmus - Oh that makes my heart ACHE !! Burn or throw away maple ! Oh geez. That is one of the most beutiful woods in wood working when it is finished. Blindfold I cant watch it !

Jeremy - Hows thE foot ? Glad you stopped in

Ken - What is A1C ?

ATSF Guy - I wOnder some times too about that. But Radio is still very active here. Radio station at every setting almost

Tincan - I have never really understood the love for county music. To me it sounds like this - Daddys in jail, Momma got run over by a train, wife left me for another man and they took my dog and cannot find a job - Just to depressing for me. But each to his own I guess.

Richard - Who would have thought. A cook.

FRRYkid -Oh,Thanks, is it difficult to reach each level ?

V8 - Sorry for the loss of your friend. You okay you seem to be down lately.

Ulrich - I will have to watch all of those wonderful videos when I get home. The office watches and comment on my usage of how much wireless I use. One time it was something like 10 GB (GB? ) for a month. They had a COW ! They didnt shut up about it until I offered to pay for it. Now that you mention it I wonder how they did that. Seperate the tracks slightly and run two controls for that scene ?

Uncle Bob - Man that sounds like an awsome day. I would pass on the bar. Have never liked bars. Didnt understand the attraction. Overpriced drinks, cops sitting down the road waiting for you to drive by to give one a ticket, wife doesnt appreciate one being in those places etc...To much of a bother for me.

Lion - wrote -  "when I got out of the Navy, I did odd thing (some really odd things) for a while, but during this time my call to the religious life grew, and eventually, I became a monk" Do you think what you did or lived through at this time helped direct you this life ? You call a Muslim your brother ? Can you elaborate in a PM on this ? I find that statement curious.

Gotta git back to w**k

At one time, the top of the diner included the rules of the diner, such as "w*rk" being a four-letter word. With all of the new patrons, I thought it would be nice to post the rules, but try as I may, I could not find a copy. Anyone know where there is a copy? If it is found, I will append it to the opening post.

Another glorious day in the Valley of the Sun. The humidity is way down, which makes for cool mornings. (Right now, it is 90F outside and the relative humidity is a paltry 9%.) The weather this morning was perfect for my ride--70F and barely a breeze. I rode about 25 miles, climbing three hills for a vertical climb of about 900'.

Mrs. ROR is out running errands. I received a text message saying she forgot the shopping list on the refrigerator, and asking if I could take a picture of the list and text it to her. As I completed the request, I thought about a couple of things:

  • Because of technology, I can work from my home so I am near the refrigerator.
  • Because of technology, Mrs. ROR could send me a text message with the request.
  • Because of technology, I could take a digital picture and send it electronically to her.

It wasn't too long ago that none of this would have been possible, and now it is just the norm. Pretty amazing.

Richard - I don´t want to be a spoil sport, but we lived pretty well without all those gadgets, when they were not around. OK, I would not want to miss the Internet, as it is my only means to stay in touch with folks all over the world, but I don´t need access to it at any place I just happen to be.

Believe it or not - I don´t even have a cell phone, let alone one of those "smart"phones. I just don´t need it.

I am coming to this place for 9 years now and I have never seen a list of rules. If there had been one, it must have been posted in  the very early days of this thread, even before it was named Elliot´s Trackside Diner.

Aside from the general forum rules and policies, there are a few words we consider to be "dirty". Work is one of them, so we spell it w*rk. Rain is also something that just happens to make life a misery, so we avoid that word. Should we have to talk about it, it´s spelled ra*n-

There may be more unwritten rules, but that´s all I remember.

Closing in on 10pm. I am up since 5am, so it´s "Bedtime For Bonzo" again!

I am hoping for a quiet night! There is a big thunderstorm rolling in on us. We are also under a tornado warning - first time ever in my neck of the woods!

Godd Night, Folks!

Hello Railfans!

Hey guys, I could use some help. As youknow I recently became endowed with the ability to finaly post stuff to the forum (pics, vids, etc). I finally got the pictures working, but the videos are another problem.

Ive contacted cousin Vinnie about it, but I think he is on vacation. What I need to know is do any of you know if MRR Forums require a certain format (ie:avi, mov, flv, mp4) for the videos to be in before they will play.

The forum mainpage lists at the top the ways to post pictures. And also gives the format for pics. Says nothing about vids. Not only the format do i need but screen aspect ratio might help too.

I have the sneaky suspicion I have to convert my vids to another format. This takes time. So id like to know what format to go to before I just willy nilly try a bunch. I know that Youtube vids are Flash type (flv), and they seem to work here pretty good.

Still, any info would be a help. Thanks guys!

Ulrich: Tornados? In Hamburg? Wow. Hamburg is the port my maternal grandparents departed from in 1905, enroute to America. They were enroute from Lithuania to Pennsylvania. Hope you are feeling better.

YGW: I was Road Foreman at Benning in DC, then Trainmaster at Bay View in Baltimore. I then ended up being transferred to Newark, NJ. I ended up staying in Jersey, been here 30 years now. Still like the Birds and 'Skins best.

No problems with the "W" word, I gave that up eight years ago.

Ray: The only thing wrong with Strawberries, is that the Strawberry season is way too short.

I just cancelled the Sirrus/XM Radio subscription on my '08 Caddie, I bargained them down two years ago, but they now want too much. Since, we mostly don't spend much time in the car any more, it really isn't a good value for us any longer. coincidently, the 3 month trial subscription for the F150 ends after today. They have not even contacted me for an extention yet...

 Afternoon Dinners

 Flo, Beer Please.

Got the A/C Charged this morning. Best $19.00 I have spent this year! Yes I did said $19.00! Yes R134 cost Bob .06 cent a onces and charges $1.15 per once. I was half a pound low so it worked out to $19.00.

After that I did some running in a cool car and that helped a lot. Went to Lowes to shign the Fence Cotract but Mike was not there. I have a change I want to make. Bought some more lumber for the rear fence and came home.

Yard Wars Boy it was hot!!!!!!!!!!! It was 91 degrees when I started at 1:00 PM and was 95 by the time I said something I cannot post here. Drank 6 liters of water today and took a lot of brakes in the A/C garage. My monster pile of brush was picked up Tuesday and I bet thoses guy had some choises words when they saw it. Have new pile started and still away's to go. But I am getting closer.

Had hope to get the new rear fence board painted. But I got into the cutting and dragging part and it did not get done. But I did uncover some live Garp Vines, I will Nuke Then Wednesday before work. Nices thing about not having a dog that gets to run the rear yard, before I could not spary any thing to kill weeds, trees or vines!

YGW A1C shows the long term blood surgar leves. I think 8.0 is pretty bad. But my wife has a chart that say's it OK. Personally and I think Ray will agree that is way to high. I would like to get mine back down to 7.0 to 6.5 or lower.

To beat to type any more.

Evening all.

Flo, Barry burger, Fries, and a Coke please. If there is any of the apple pie left, I will have a slice of that for desert, with a generous scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream on top, please. Thanks.

W**k: Yes, that four-letter word. Wink Yesterday I ended up staying later than scheduled, as one employee was ill, and did 1600 in sales, store total of 2200, zero accounts, went 0-9, zero contest numbers for the whole store, so we went 0-way too many... But did get 7 of the last number set, store total of 12. Last week, on Tuesday the store did 23, with 4 accounts, 6 contest numbers, on 2600 in sales, so just an off day all around. Go in to open tomorrow, and close on Friday and Saturday. Somehow had today and have Sunday off. Odd... But I am not complaining!

Weather: Light r**n showers off and on today, but hit 80. Tomorrow is forcasted to have AM showers, but a high of 82-84, and weekend being mid to upper 80's, with sun throughout. (Sorry Vinnie, two four letter words already in my post...)

Hobby: Got some painting on a box car kit done, dulled down the trucks (airbrushed with weathered black acrylic, which dries dead flat) and have flat clear coat one drying on the rest, will do second flat clear coat when I am done with the pie. (Should be dry by now.) Will then weather using PanPastels, and acrylic paints. (Roof will get acrylics and PanPastels, rest just PanPastels.) Will use a color close to the original, but lighter, to do fading of both lettering and paint, and use browns and blacks for grime and dirt. (I have a color close to the original, as I have a blue, and it is a CSX boxcar, dark blue with yellow lettering.) Will highlight the truck springs with rust acrylic drybrushed on, and have a dark brown to use on the wheelsets. I will also highlight the bearings with a blue acrylic paint, with a black wash afterwards, just to tone down the rust and blue bearings.

I am now beginning to really experiment with acrylic craft paints, and will be finding a dark slate gray to use in place of weathered black in the future, as 99c is much cheaper than 3.00 a bottle in the train stores, and you get much more paint per bottle. I am using black already for straight black, as it worked well on the glass work. So basic black, white, etc... is already easy to do, with basic craft paint. It works well for brushing, and airbrushing, when thinned about 60/40 paint/distilled water mix, with a couple drops of Flow Aid added in. (Slightly thinner will spray at a lower pressure, but this mix works well at around 28-32 psi. I am experimenting with using washes for weathering, at ~38 psi, so no problem spraying ~30 psi for craft paints.)

Hope all are well, and have a good evening.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, a cup of decaf and a seat in the back!

I had a fun day, back in the sound routine again....  You know I really did love doing live sound and recording for people!  The entertainment went very smoothly, people said it sounded great out front, and Ihad a very enjoyable evening.  The only non-enjoyable part is tearing everything down and packing it all ion the PiP.....  Yep, i can squeeze everything I need to do the sound in my Prius....  I made sure I did some measuring before I bought the car 4 years ago! Smile, Wink & Grin  Had a self assigned helper for the evening.  He is a kid, now graduated from college in theather production, who grew up in our church, went to Music Camp back when Was the music director for it (Church Camp) work with me on several shows at the Local High School, and is now back here and has applied for a job at a well known Theater downtown here in Geneva.  Man, I hope he gets the job.  I may be close to 50 years older than him, but we think alike and get along great!  His little sister (a sweet and beautiful High School kid) was the last entertainer for the evening.  Their Grandfather was the scientist at the NYS Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva (Cornell University) that bred the Empire Apple!  He was also the Committee chair of my son's Boy Scout Troop when we first Moved to Geneva...  Have known the family for 3 generations now...  Most of the equipment will remain in the PiP until tomorrow morning when I will attempt to get it put away.

YGW, there wasn't many board feet of usable wood in that old rotten maple tree.  It is a wonder it just didn't fall down on it's own a couple years ago....  Entire inside of the tree was dead and rotted wood.  The apple would have made excellent fire wood though.  I told my son that he wasn't going to get it.  He shrugged his shoulders and said, I didn't have time right now to get it anyway.

I had a huge plate of chocolate cake and 3 different flavors of ice cream smothered in about 2 cups of strawberries well sweetened!  Oh yeah!  My doctor didn't arrive at the festival until after I had finished it so I didn't have to explain.......... Whistling

Joe  you are absolutely right about the Strawberry Season.  I do have some everbearing ones out in the front bed here.  They are very small berries (alomost like the wild berries we gathered when I was a kid), very tasty, and the squirrels love them..... Bang Head

Oh...  While I was writting this, the church photographer emailed a couple photos she took at the festival earlier tonight.  I'm the old guy in the safety yellow Museum Shirt.  The other guy is the kid I mentioned above...

Have a great one!

Good Morning!

The night was quiet, so that thunderstorm must have passed us by. The tornado warning still continues for the next days.

wojosa31
Ulrich: Tornados? In Hamburg? Wow.

Tornados used to be as rare as hen´s teeth in all of Germany up until about 15 years ago. Now weh have up to 40 of those twisters creating havoc each year and the number is steadily increasing. Most of them just cause a considerable amount of property damage, hardly any loss of life, though. I guess we build them houses a little sturdier than you people do.

You know there is a Museum of Emigration in Hamburg, keeping records of all emigrants who have left Europe via the port of Hamburg! There should be files on your grandparents.

Douglas - you cannot upload videos directly to this forum. You have to uload them to a web hosting source like Youtube and than link them to your post in here by copy&pasting the video´s url via the little film stri button you see in the post body.

No plans for the day - I might continue on the wiring of the Z scale layout.

I think I'm in the mood for a simple cup of milk with some mint flavoring in it. (Think a steamer except don't run the steam into it.) Another one of those oddball things that I like.

yougottawanta

FRRYkid -Oh,Thanks, is it difficult to reach each level ?

That depends on the requirements (experence points or XP) of the particular level. At the levels where I'm at, I can take quite a while. It's been way too long ago to remember on the lower levels.

On the hobby side of stuff, I got another part of one of my projects this evening - what will be the drive for my GP30. (The drive is a Athearn BB GP35 which is what was used when the shell was originally distributed in the BN scheme.) I will need to take either a flat file or my Dremel tool to the frame and knock off a couple of corners to get it to fit on the shell. I'm to the point where I know the Athearn GP35 drives backwards and forwards. I now have 11 of those drives (close to half my diesel engines)! My eight GP20s ride on 35 drives with modified frames. I also have two BN Athearn GP35s - One is stock, the other one I picked up in Fargo last summer at a railroad convention.

In the same vein, has anyone here even worked with Smokey Valley handrail kits (specifically #6)? I ordered a set for the shell I have and I tried reading the instructions and got completely lost. I emailed Smokey Valley and still haven't gotten a new set of those instructions that is hopefully less confusing. Or in the alternative, if anyone knows anyone who has worked with these kits, any advice they have would be welcomed.

YGW -- I look forward to this annual trip every year.  I started doing it a few years ago when I decided to take off work the Friday closest to the summer solstice so I'd have the most daylight possible to shoot pictures.  I wanted to be able to sleep in the next day so that I could recover.  It's relaxing, just being there by yourself, with three occasional railway stopping by.  My only concern is, Syracuse is supposed to be the "spike" capital of the East Coast.  The N.Y. Times had an article about it last year.  It's a synthetic variety of marijuana that's smuggled in from the Orient, and it causes things like convulsions, people a thing like wolves and biting other people, neat stuff.  I guess the chemists who make it and the pushers who sell it (sometimes out of stores) feel that, since heroin has made a big comeback, they may as well come out with a drug that's cheap like grass, but with the fun side effects of PCP.  And people buy it and use it, even though it's highly addictive and can kill you.  My worry is that I'd run across someone high on this stuff.  But the Southern Tier's rail traffic is sparse, and NS's main through PA is too far away, plus I don't know where to railfan them east of Harrisburg anyway, so the former NYC it is.

Sir Madog

Douglas - you cannot upload videos directly to this forum. You have to uload them to a web hosting source like Youtube and than link them to your post in here by copy&pasting the video´s url via the little film stri button you see in the post body.

This I already knew. To that end I got myself my very own website. For my own reasons ofcourse, and a couple of those reasons was so that I may post to this site.

However, I need to know the video format so that i may upload the correct format of video to my site, so i can then link it to this site. You see, when you upload to a website, some sites (like youtube) convert your videos for a number of reasons.

Two top reasons for conversion are for storage space, and the ability to 'stream' videos out. Youtube for instance: you load a video that is an MP4 type video. Once loaded into youtube, its converted to a 'flash' video or *.flv" type. Download a video from youtube and if you dont convert on the download and leave the file as is.... it is a flash video file. And thats youtube, a site dedicated to serving videos.

The host for my site isnt setup like youtube. I have to do everything by HTML etc. Thusly, any video linked may not work on this site without conversion. Ive tried the URL link MRR provides. Ive even been on their test page testing links. (BTW, the test page looks and operates totally different from a standard forum page - why I have no clue but it seems counter productive and confusing to the average joe).

Ive read the post about posting pictures. In there it mentions photo type (.jpg) and size constraint of photos. Videos have the same constraints. Problem is those are NOT listed. Which is my question......

Anyone know what they are?

Douglas

PS: loved the last video. Specially the part where all the guys left to go "play" with their "electric trains" and left all their girly friends sitting at the table. Such a Bundy moment - Al would be proud!

Good morning.  I'm finishing up lunch after a night and morning of fasting.  It's a subject near and dear to my heart, and kidneys, and liver, and...a blood test for my physical next week.  I feel good, so I hope the doctor and the test results agree and I don't have to start taking any more Old Man Pills.  My own A1C was around 7 the last couple of times.  Untreated, it was close to 10.  Exercise is the biggest component of that treatment, so I'll be back out on the bike as soon as my luch digests.

No tornado in sight so far, but we continue to be under a warning.

It´s supper time over here, so I´ll go for a nice sirloin steak, medium-rare, baked potato topped with sour creme and  aside dish of string beans - haricots vert, as the French say. Add a Beer to that, Brunhilda, dear!

It´s hot & humid outside - makes me feel a little dumb in my head. Did I hear somebody laughing and saying this would be my normal state? Well, I was just about to order a round of track for you guys ...

With the Gotthard base tunnel entering into regular operation at the end of this year, there is a big question mark on the future of the old mountain route. All international services will pass through the new tunnel, and the regional trains won´t pay for the upkeep. In the long run, this may mean the end of the old and historic route.

Take a look at what the world will eventually lose, should the line be closed:

Lunch time !

Mr. B I think excercise should be banned like the word w**k. I hate exc****e. I know its supposed to be good for one. But....

V8 - Geez I wonder how many ways we have to invent for us to self destruct ? And now they have something called "Spice" ?

Garry - Home is always a good place to be.

Uncle Bob - Be careful - GEEZ THAT sounds dangerous. Better carry something with some knock down power like an Elephant gun !

Frry kid - Milk with mint ? Hmm may have to try that.

Howmus - Coming from a carpenter/wood working heart any wood throw away is a sad occasion. I have had some beatuifil pices made from a block of Maple no bigger than 12 sqaure inches.

Ricky W - What spray rig do you use ?

Ken - ANY money spent on AC this time of year is money well spent !

Lion - read your PM. Interesting view point. I replied. Thanks for the feed back. Look forward to your reply to my current comments.

Hello Railfans!

ATSFGuy - Due to forum rule "no mentioning of websites so as not to promote them", I cant print website name here. You can email me for the link. However, putting org at the end of my username might prove fruitful! Whistling

Forgot to share a few pics in my above post....

NYC EE - one of thee most beautiful trains we ever had!

Another racehorse, albeit not as famous, but every bit as beautiful!

Amtrak northbound on RF&P tracks. 1/2 mile north of Hamiltons Crossing, Dumpwater Va. 1983 i think.

Heres one for Ken-

I just don't think of it as exercise, but rather as an enjoyable way to spend some time, get some fresh air and sometimes make friends and have some pleasant conversation.  Bicycling is pure pleasure to me.  As for the "pumping iron" part in the gym, it gives me more strength and speed on the hockey rink, and improves my game.  When fall comes, I'll add a few leg exercises to condition myself for the different stresses of skiing.  Besides, a well-toned male body is more likely to attract a well-toned female body, also an interest of mine.

Is this the same stuff they called "bath salts" a few years back?

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

PM Railfan,

Sorry about asking the name of the website,

Cool photos! I remember seeing Amtrak F40PH's pulling the "San Diegan" with Amfleet/Horizon cars and a Metroliner Cab Car in the late 90's/early 00's in Irvine Station before the Surfliners took over.

Love the NYC Hudson!  Too bad none were saved or preserved.

NYC had two paint versons for the 4-6-4 Hudsons: Two Tone Grey

and Grey/Black on the bottom (like the one in your photo).

Correct me If I'm wrong, But the Two Tone Grey version was used for the 1938 "20th Century Limited". The Silver/Black version was used on the "Empire State Express".
