Evening all.

Chloe, hot fudge sundae's all around, please. Put em' all on my tab. Get some happy people here... No grumps allowed!

Been a cooler day here today, welcome after hitting 91 yesterday, with a high humidity giving a feels like temperature of 99-102, depending on who you listened too...

W**k: Was off today, another welcome after grouchy people past two days. Must have been the heat... Sales were decent, and wasn't a terrible day, but we fell further on contest numbers, dropping to third place. Contest runs until the 18th, so last week for it. The other managers were still just as grouchy as the customers, and that was getting on my nerves. I finally told the one that they just needed to let me do my job, and take care of my customers. (Was on the phone to handle an issue, and ordered to hang up and call back at a different number, for escalations only, only to get the same person I was ordered to hang up on, and go over the whole issue, from the start, and take twice as long to handle the issue and get the customer taken care of.) I also told a customer, whom was trying to start an argument with someone else, to "zip it", and told her that if she continued with what she was doing, she could leave, as I would not put up with the issues she was creating. (No fighting allowed people...)

No news on hobby front, was busy with other things this weekend.

Hello to all, and hope all are well.

 Evening Dinners

Flo, Beer please and I will buy a round for the New Guys.

Work Front It was slow again today with only 3 customers and 2 bought. But they where the kind of customers I have been missing of late. Made a extra $155.00 today and it was need badly with the house payment coming due.

Yard Wars This morning I got some Round Up Posion Ivy Killer sparyed on the wild Gape Vines. It is the only stuff I have found that will kick there Caboose!

It was another hot nasty day, car said it was 99 degress halfway home and it felt it. But at the house it was only 85? Hey, it worked for me! After a few Beer I got some more of the fence painted in the back part. While it was a waste of paint I all so painted some of the dry rotted boards. From 80' back it looks normal. I do need to buy more paint, another $22.00 and will need another 15 boards or so. I will need to replace's all of them but for now I am just replacing the ones that are falling a part.

Ulrich I all so find my self thinking a lot about the days of my youth.  Think that comes with getting older for all of us. Example, when I first got out of the Army I never looked back. Now I think about it a lot, some how became the Good Old Days? I could run 5 miles with a 60 pound back pack. 100 push up was not super hard, 25 pull ups and so forth. Well, you all have seen the photos of me lately! Laugh

Well BBQ is done, so later.

Good evening.

Ken: Nice photo of the BL2 and coal train.  I'm still getting to know most of the nice people here. Thanks for the drink, Beer, I'll get the next round.

Spealing of yard wars, I managed to get some late lawn seeding done yesterday. If the weather remains relatively cool, the seed may take. However, the bushy tailed gardner that lives in one of my 125+ year old oaks, decided to improve my work by planting a few of his stash of acorns.Bang Head

Currently, I'm building a Walthers Water St. Freight Station kit I bought when they first came out with the Cornerstone Line in the late 1980s. Better late than never.  It's a reasonable stand in for the PRR Freighthouse and Freight Agency office on the branchline I'm modeling. Apparently there are no defining photos, so I'm home free using the kit without modification. It's nice to finally get around to using some of my stash of kits.

Good Evening,

Been pretty gloomy here on the west coast.

Well the Angels lost Friday's Game, They won Saturday, but lost again on sunday.

I sure feel bad for those Angel fans.

Was at Playdays Collectibles in Whitter Ca, buying model diecast cars for my collection, outside of model trains, I also collect diecast cars.

I take a small handful wih me when our module club does a show, they get displayed on the "Orange Grove" and "Route 66" corners.

I would like to Upload some pics of them to this website at some point, I have saved a file in microsoft word. Is it possible to "cut and paste" them from there to here?

I listened to the "60;s on 6" channel on Siruis Xm from 2:30-6:00 and "Cruisin with Cousin Brucie" was playing, Tons of Lost Hits and Gems hiding in there!

I even made a request on his facebook page and he played it 5 mins after I posted, talk about service! Smile

With a few exceptions, It's too bad terrestrial radio refuses to do anything fun and creative anymore.  Pity Them Sad

Thinking of getting the New Bachmann 4-4-0 w/DCC and 3 Con Cor passenger cars ( 1 Baggage Mail, 2 Coaches) not sure yet.

For those offering rounds of Beer, I will take something non-alcoholic.

Am looking forward to later today. Get to play on the layout. Primary focus today is to finish off the Walthers Fueling Track. (My layout and I don't live in the same place.) Also have to help Mom take the cat to vet. That cat doesn't like me real well and doesn't ride in cars well either.

Misery hast its grips on me - hardly any sleep and a body which is just one big pain. I will have to go through that as I don´t want to get addicted to pain killers. Gotta change my name into Linus van Pelt.

Morning all . !

I have been recruiting. In my church we grow it by inviting people. it still works. No I didn't buy the place. But I thought we needed to recruit some people to spruce up the place. So I have been going to other models page, sending out a friend request and writing them a note inviting them join us  in the diner.

I have been surprised to find that some thought this a closed club.

Welcome to all of the new faces

Gotta run TTYL

No. The directions for posting a photo are pasted at the top of the forum. You will have to upload your photos in jpg format to a third party hosting service and then supply the URL that they give you in the box in the photo uploader icon above.

This forum only understands text, but your word document understands text and imbedded files.

Easy, even my friend, Ramu, can do it. Will you join jus for breakfast?

Greetings from The Jersey Shore.

That's quite a Kitty, Brother LionWow.

The Orioles are not exactly performing all that well either. Their pitching does not match their offensive talent, witness the last two games vs. Toronto. It's on to Boston now. Hopefully they will keep the ball down and find the strike zone.

170 is max for a person 50.  Cardiologist don't recommend going to the max.  Maybe like the commercial says ask your doctor if your healthy enough to do that?  I don't know the official criteria for doing a stress test, but I'll bet a 50 year old guy running his heart rate up to 170 is one.

The 220-minus-age is a good estimate for maximum heart rate, but is not exact. Genetics and physical fitness also play a part. I am 56yo, so according to the forumla my maximum should be 164bpm, but obviously it is higher than that. Mine is closer to 172 or 173bpm. I regularly push my heart rate into the 160's, and can sustain a >160 bpm effort for many minutes.

What do your electric bills run?  We flew out of Phoenix last year and the temp was 117.  At 4 am it was still 101.  We drove through a short tunnel or very long overpass and the car outside thermometer climbed to 128.  Your air conditioners out there must be working as hard as your heart.

In the heat of the summer, our electric bill will approach $300 per month. (In the winter months, it is just over $100, but we do use natural gas for heat.) The A/C unit doesn't run all of the time, but it is on quite a bit.

About twenty years ago, the airport all but shut down due to the heat. The temperature hit 122F and the charts for the Boeing 737, the most common plane used to get in and out of Phoenix at the time, only went up to 120F for their take-off specs. (The hotter the air, the thinner the air, thus a longer take-off.) Since that time, Boeing has updated the charts for temperatures above 120F.

Sir Madog
I am right now suffering a total loss of confidence in whatever I may attempt in doing, extending far beyond model railroading. I know I am heading down the wrong road, but can´t turn around. It´s a feeling of getting lost in your own house, like longing for a change and being afraid of it at the same time.

I've got the solution for you.  You need ... a Hawaiian shirt.

For a while at work, there was a tradition of "Hawaiian Shirt Friday" because many of our fellow employees spent some time at radar sites in Hawaii or the South Pacific.  It started in the dark days when engineers were expected to wear white shirts and dark ties to work every day.  I think I was the last person in the building to do this regularly, and when asked about it, I would tell them...

"You can't be unhappy in a Hawaiian shirt."

I was at an outdoor concert with a lady friend yesterday, and the guy sitting next to us was wearing one.  He was very happy, throwing himself into dancing and generally not caring what anyone else thought.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of Heritage Flakes Cereal and a large pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee this morning.

Dark, Gray, gloomy day outside.  The thermometer is currently at 58°F...  Yep, I turned the heat back on last night as it got down into the 40's again here.  I spent the last couple hours trying to get my new Large Format Canon Printer connected to my old iMac.  I tryed several time to connect via my WiFi then decided that since the computer I use the most is sitting right next to the prinetr why bother and just connect it with a USB cable.  Even that took several tries to get it done.  Appears I didn't have the cable pushed in all the way on the printer.....  Why do they have to keep "Improving" things???  It is now set up and working properly and will become my main (only) printer just as soon as I run out of the ink I have for the small canon printer.  That one is giving me warnings all the time that the pad where the ink used for cleaning and checking the printer goes is almost full.  To get that repaired would probably cost more that the new printer, so I'll just throw it away (recycle it actually).

In the heat of the summer, our electric bill will approach $300 per month.

WOW! RideOnRoad!  May's bill for me for electric was $15.42...  That was the fee for having NYSEG's wires attached to my house.  June, July, August, and maybe September will be the same.....  Huh?  Oh, right I have 4,200w of solar panels on the roof....  Sorry, I just like to show off sometimes! Whistling

Good to see some new faces in here!

Gotta get myself moving.  This is going to be an incredibly busy week.  Today I have to drive to Rochester and chaufeur my sister home from the airport.  I'm sure she will spend lots of time telling me all about the visit to Nowhth Cahrollahnah...... Laugh  Wednesday is the Strawberry Festival at Church (I still provide sound for it), Tomorrow I have to go out to camp and get a couple cords I need for the festival..., Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I will be out at the R&GV RR Museum (mostly working on crew).

Have a great day!

Morning Gang,

I got to sleep in this AM. as I have to w**k late tonight. Haven't done that for awhile.

Chloe, When you have a moment, I would certainly enjoy a blueberry bagel and a dollup of PB. with a large cup of HC. I feel chilly this morning.

I have been very busy lately and not been in much at all. Also not much change on the LM&E, except I bought a couple of wedge trailers (Yellow) from a LHS. that is moving. Also repaired a couple of cars that were waiting on the RIP. track.

ULRICH,  I am sorry to hear about your "Blues" and aches and pains, my Prayers go out to you.  I need to ask, if you are having difficulties with the N scale layout and equipment, why not just finish it as well as you can and sell it but keep your Swiss layout that looks so great ?

YGW.   How is your SIL and Daughter doing ? we haven't heard much from you about them. Sure hope they are healing well. Prayers and blessings and kind thoughts are still with them from here.

Garry,   wishing many happy and safe miles for you and your family.

Moonboy,  When are you coming north again. Probably not before you get those new pilings in. Hope you get good weather for that job.

I still here from Flip quite often, I can't thank him and Garry enough for sticking  by me through my Cancer ordeal. Their support was great and much appreciated.

I am going to start sanding off an old TONKA dragline that was given to my Grandson and I have been asked to see if I could get the rust off of it and repaint it and get all of the cables back to working again.  Sounds like a summer project to me, but I bet he will want it sooner than that.

BTW. CN. Charlie,  the main bath is painted, refloored, new bathfitter around tub and shower, the new vanity (long) top is sitting in the hallway (waiting for me). I have the new baseboartds and door trim to put on and the Wife has to decide on a new mirror. So we are getting there but I think your pace on yours was still better than ours is.  It was a winter projecr that really got dragged out.

Well, I had better get some nourishment poured down my tube, so I have enough energy to get a start on that project.

Hope it warms up for you RAY.  and those of you in the heat, may it be more temperate for you, maybe a cool breeze as well.

Galaxy,  So glad to hear from you, sorry about all the conflict you are dealing with, I think it can only get better for you now..  Heres hoping.

Wonder where Blind Bruce is and Seamonster too ?  as well as Nevada Paul from Feenley, and Choo Choo Willie (Dennis) from North of Calgary as well..

All for now,  will check back in from w**k tonight.

Johnboy out........................till later

LOL.... Thanks! But my sister will be flying over your house in about 3 hours....  Nope, I ain't driving' down to NC to give her a ride home.  Just driving to the Rochester Airport.

The guestinmate for cost and payback period on the panels says that I should have the panels paid for (they are already paid for, BTW) after about 12 years of ownership based on the current cost for electricity (prices will likely keep increasing.).  So in 20 years of ownership, I should have a profit of About $5,200.  Oh and the lifespan of the panels before they will be recycled is about 40 years. But that is not really the reason I did it.  Without getting into some questionable topics here in the forum, lets just say I did it because I could and wanted to! WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin

I, too, am interested in the cost/benefit of solar panels. As I look forward to the next, post-retirement house, I am seriously considering a custom build and am starting to think about including solar panels. I am especially interested in your experience, as you live up north. How effective are your panels in the winter, and do you need to deal with snow/ice removal? Are your panels roof-mounted, or stand-alone? Did rebates/incentives/tax-credits factor into your payback numbers?

Afternoon Diners,

I downloaded the Trainstation app on my phone three days ago. I have a problem with it. It's completely boring and don't want to spend money on gems to speed up the trains. How can this be a popular game?

Does anyone else has this app? That probably has the same or different reactions.

I would like to hear more about the app. It intrugues me. What do you do ? Run a train ? Pick up cars from sidings ? Passenger runs ? How do they make the money to play ?etc...

Howmus - OH ! Well you know what I can float a bloon up with a snack or two your sister can grab as she flies by Wink

Johnboy - Her body is healing but that is about the best I can say about it. She has brain damage and beceause of that she is incapable of making good decisions. She is making some very bad decisions and the sorry part about it all is her parents tried to have the state recognize that she was not capable and some how she passed some test they gave her. We are watching her self destruction and we can do nothing. It is awful. Please continue to pray for her. It is only the grace of God that can help her.

Richard pm sent.  I am surprised you are asking about snow and ice removal living in Mesa.  Surely you are not going to retire in Wyoming.

Doesn't AZ have some Public Service punitive charge on people who have solar panels?  It would figure in a state that has 300+ days of sunshine.

I get a lot of scam? calls to buy/lease/rent solar panels.  I've read that some are unhappy as the the cost has dropped below the levels the early adopters have leased them.

My July August electric bills are 220-270.  Because we are next to the Chesapeake Bay, we do not have a big range in temperatures during the day in summer.  At 7 am temps can be 80's with 90-100% humidity at that time of year.

Hi Richard,  I'll try to answer each of your questions as best I can.  If you are thinking on putting Solar on a new house, I have heard that is the best time to do it as the house can be built to accomodate and maximize the benefits of it.  Some very impotant things are the orientation of the house so the roof will get the maximum sunshine and whether there are other objects such as trees or other buildings that will shade the roof part of the day, and a few other concerns.

Living up North...  Arizona certainly gets a bit more usable sun each year than NYS!  But there is still plenty of sun to take advantage of up here.  During the summer, our days are longer so will be on for more hours each month.  Of course the opposite is true in the Wintertime.  This year so far the low for a month was all of 102 kWh (January) but June is on track to bring in about 600 kWh.  Since September 2012 when the sytem got switched on for the first time and now they have produced 17,500 (aproximate) kWh of electricity.  That amounts to about 70% of my total use during that time.  They produce an excess of power about 5 months a year.  Most people stay connected to the grid (mandatory to get any incentives and a lot cheaper than putting in battery backup).

Ice/Snow removal.  Yep in wintertime I get some excersize doing just that.  Normally if they have less than a couple inches of snow they can still start up and since they produce heat as well they will clear on their own in a day or so.  Now a foot or two or three like we had a couple years ago....  I have something called a roof rake to hook and pull snow off the roof when possible.  Two years ago during the month of February when we had several feet of snow build up on the roof....  The total output for the month was .5 kWh.....  A couple warm days in march cleared them and them they made up for by giving me the best March I have had for Electricty.

Here is a photo of my house with the panels on the roof.  18 of them at 240 (maximum) watts each.

I know several people that live outside the city who have enough land to have them set up in a field.

Rebates/incentives/tax credits.....  That will vary big time by the state you live in.  Here in NYS thay have been very pro solar and wind and other forms of clean energy (Normal electrical power at the moment is less than 10% coal....)  Some states are possitivily anti clean power, so check the state where you plan to build.  Back in 2012 when I installed my system (and many of the things I will mention have changed since then), the total price came to $16,870.  There was a cash rebate from NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Developement) of $6,480.  I got a Federal Tax Credit (you have to be paying this much in taxes to get) of $3,117.  Since I am a Retired Teacher I pay no NYS Income Tax on my benefits (paid up front...) so I did not get the NYS Tax Credit (about half the federal at that time).  So my cost came to… $7273.00  Your milage will vary!  Do some research on where you want to live and build.  Good luck!  It is really nice to know that when I'm out mowing lawn, the power came from the Sunshine that fell on the roof of my house yesterday!  Oh, and by the way, the rest of my Electricity is purchased from a company called Ethical Electric which only buys Solar and Wind power....  I still have people drive by and stare at the house....  There is a list of who in the city has Solar (long list I might add), and people will stop when they see me out and ask questions just like you did on here.

"Any time there is a huge spill of Solar Energy, it's called a nice day."

Almost. There is a distinct possibility that we could end up retiring in Idaho. My son lives up there with all of our grandkids, land is cheap, and we can escape the crazy AZ summers. (I know, I know, we would be trading them for the Idaho winters.)

Ray: Thanks for the great information.

Is there a reason not to put the panels on the ground, like you see out in the solar farms, assuming you have the real estate? It seems to me you would have complete control over the direction of the panels and snow removal would be a bit easier. What about the warranty on the panels? How long, and are you protected if the company that provided the panels goes out of business?

Edit: Looks like I got top of the page. Dinner is on me.

Frrykid -  Where is your RR at ? How extensive was the damage from the tornado ?

My railroad is on the ranch where I grew up. It is about 5 miles south of town and I live in town and I do not drive. (I help around the house and take the opportunity to work on it.)

The tornado destroyed 6 homes and damaged around 50 and injured several people (no deaths, thankfully, but two horses were killed.). What was even more amazing was there were two major sporting events going on in the area and none of those individuals were injured from what I have understood. It has been rated at an EF-3. That makes it one of the stronger to ever hit Montana. (Much of this comes from a report by the Billings (MT) Gazette.

Ground installation.  Other than some possible local codes that might prohibit them, I think that if you have sufficient space, there would be little reason not to have them there.  Hobart and William Smith Colleges here in Geneva just commisioned a huge array of panels on the ground, but they are outside of the city on some unused farm land.  BTW the land can still be used for growing hay and will be harvested by a local farmer.  I don't really know what the advantages or disadvantages would be, but I do see a lot of them around the area now.  Geneva has a goal of making more electric than we use by 2020 I beleive.  We are getting close already.

Warrenty.... Mine reads as follows:
 * 25 years worldwide coverage
 * 100% warrenty term coverage
 * Providing third party bankruptcy rights
 * Non-cancellable
 * Immediate coverage
 * Insured by 3 world top insurance companies

I don't see warrenty for mine to be a problem..... Laugh

Again those are all questions to ask of the companies you look into.  I contacted 3 different installers and each gave me different proposals.  I ultimently went with a local area installer that has been in the electric business for over 50 years and is very, very highly regarded.  Know and trust the people you choose to do the job!!!

Afternoon Diners,

I downloaded the Trainstation app on my phone three days ago. I have a problem with it. It's completely boring and don't want to spend money on gems to speed up the trains. How can this be a popular game?

Does anyone else has this app? That probably has the same or different reactions.

I have it on my desktop. It more has to do with being patient at first. Part of it is you have to wait until level 10 when you can get into the international partners which makes it more interesting.

To all of my fellow diners mentioning their poor performing baseball teams: I can unfortunately trump all of you with the performance of my team. I'm an Atlanta Braves fan since the mid-80s. That should be enough said.

Good evening all.

Flo, Root beer float, please.

Weather: Hit 72 today, forecast is warmer tomorrow, was cloudy today though.

W**k: Started the day with a flat tire, so got to w**k about 5 minutes late, as I was able to fix it before I left, but missed breakfast because of it. (Good thing I seen it first thing this morning, as I spent about 30 minutes fixing it, but never found the leak... One of those little gremlin dudes must have been by last night!) Had a really good numbers day, moved up to a tie for second on contest numbers, and was one new account shy of my total from all of last week! Started a hot streak at 1pm, finished at 3:15, or 15:15 for you military time folk, getting numbers "across the board" on all of our goals, by 1:30, and kept adding more to it until I left. Did roughly 1800 in sales throughout the day, from just after open till I left, which, while it is not spectacular, is still really good for a Monday, and exceeded new account goals, getting close to double that goal, and was about 600 off goal for contest numbers, as that number they want one "yes" per 400 dollars, I got 3, should have had 4-5, exceeded by almost double the other number goal, it is matched with the new accounts goal, and am now more than double the Sr. Asst. Manager's accounts total, triple or better everyone else. I sit 3 shy of my total for all of last month, when I finished second in the store, with one of the best averages in the district currently, averaging 1 account for every 4 hours I have worked this month. District manager passed on a congrats for that during the afternoon conference call with the district stores.

So, w**k was pretty good today. And, people were less grumpy today, it must have been the heat getting to them over the weekend.

Afterwards, had the memorial service for the friend who passed away last week, attendance was ~500 people, give or take a couple dozen. (We rented a large nearby fire departments social hall, and it was standing room only!) Jim was known and loved by many, many people. Assisted with the cookies for afterwards, making about 6 dozen cookies over the weekend, and with all who helped, there were plenty of cookies! (Yes, I ate my fair share of them!) Got to visit with some friends afterwards, whom I have not seen in a long time, because they have moved from the area, but came out for the memorial as they were friends with Jim as well. (We all wished it was a more happy reason for getting together though.) It did go well though, all considered, especially with that large of a crowd. (Yes, with that many people we did go through lots of Kleenex!) Only issue was finding enough room to park everyone! (We filled up the parking lot there, and about 1/3 of the lot at a nearby sporting facility, there was that many cars.)

Hobby: Will be working on a couple projects tomorrow, after w**k. Will be (hopefully) getting the final paint coat on a railcar project, and working on another, finishing it as well if all goes to plan.

Hello to all, and hope all are well.

Sorry, Cleveland Indians fan here.... Came close a couple time during my lifetime, but never won it all while I have been around... They get just good enough to tease you, then crash and burn.

Might be able to be trumped by a Cubs fan though... Sorry for those fans! Stick out tongue

Good evening diners.  Flo, a glass of ice tea and a dish of chocolate ice cream, if you please.

Today was another beautiful day in the mid-Ohio River Valley with about 85 degrees, a nice breeze and low humidity.  I did manage to hand mix and pour 800 lbs of concrete this afternoon.  The forms worked as expected and the top finished off nicely and the anchor bolts are in awaiting framing for one end of the porch.  Time to start digging under the other end of the porch and repeating this drill.

Johnboy, I am heading north about mid-July.  Looking forward to cooler weather already.  The humidity is almost always lower up north.

FRRYkid, a  friend posted a facebook picture this weekend of an Atlanta fan's car with a broken window and two tickets to a Braves game plus four more left in place by the intruder.  Thought it was pretty funny.

I am pretty tired after this afternoon's workout.

V8Vega, I decided at 73 I probably have no business working off a ladder or on a roof anymore.  Certainly know what you are talking about getting on the roof to work on your swamp cooler.

Tomorrow afternoon, I am going to provide transportation for a group of Bike and Build riders from our church to the local YMCA for showers.  This group rides cross country each year to raise money for low cost housing.  They have been staying at our church for the past six years.  Riders are from the northeast and ride to the west coast.

Time for some z'ss.
