Ray   I would guess the loco is going back to the yard tender first,so it would be three shorts as he would be going in reverse.

Gidday Chloe, could I please have several large fingers of Navy Squirt delivered to the far end of the Rivet Counter. Have had an afternoon and evening of trying to deal with bureaucrats, and not succeeding. I’m afraid I almost lost my “fit and proper person” status by momentarily losing my temper. Commonsense does not appear to be in their vocabulary, besides I get sick and tired of being told “how to do” by those who never have.  Angry
I’m turning into a grumpy old man.Sigh
Thank goodness for model railroading and the forum to escape to.

Three shorts, Ray???

Morning Diners.

Flo, the breakfast platter and a OJ please, will make for a nice brunch.

Ray, I would say, tender first means reverse normal, so three shorts.

Weather: Never got above 50 yesterday, so hoping it hits the mid 60's like forecasted today. At least it is nice and sunny today. Cool

W**k: Am still lead on new accounts, better than double second place in our store at close last night, sit tied for second on contest numbers, but our store fell from leading that yesterday, as all of us struck out on that number set. It was a slow day yesterday, as the whole store only did 2200 in sales, last week we could do that by mid-day report time! My area, in menswear, did the best, with Father's Day approaching, that was expected. Off today, so housework, and possibly some painting, if I can get the housework done quickly.

Well, hope all enjoy the day!

Mornin'.....  Uh...  Ahem!  Afternoon folks!

Zoe, since your still here, I'll have Cherrybundy® on ice for the moment.  Sun is trying to shine outside today.  Yea!!!!!  Temperature got down into the mid 40"s overnight so I turned the central heat on.  Only going to get up to about 66°F today, so I may open up the window in the bedroom and bet some fresh air in here.

Have to be over at the dentist to get my new permanent crown in about 45 minutes,  so that gave me some time to check the diner to see what is up.

I see three people have answered the question I posed last night.  I will wait until tonight to give an "official" answer to everyone.

Just updated my Division membership list and find there are several people who have not resigned up...  Several of them also signed the Petition that just got sent in.  I do hope it doesn't compromise it!  We also have some new members.  I will feel better when I find that the petition has been accepted by National and we can move forward.  Have to update my email list and mailing list today as well.  Probably can get that done before I go over to the Dentist...

Have a great day out there!

Morning diners,

I stumbled across a YouTube video called SP Closet Branch. It's about three crew members on his small 18" x 30" N Scale layout. There's five for now.

I liked these. I wanted to do the same thing several years ago. I hope you enjoy them.

Good Evening!

It´s been a boring day. Nothing really happened, which is actually a good thing. I am not into surprises these days. Well, the only incident was Petra complaining on my Z scale layout resting on the coffee table in our living room. To be honest, I don´t really have a place for it - yet.  I have not started on the wiring - still waiting for the stuff I ordered two weeks ago.

I have to be careful with any spending this month. There are a few things due for payment, like the road tax, car insurance, plus the annual service and DOT safety inspection. This will blow a big hole into my savings, meaning a complete drain of what´s in my piggy bank. Despite being the cheapest car to run, it´s not economical at all. The annual cost is much higher than taking a taxi, and that´s without having driven a single mile! A hefty price for convenience! I just wish they would make and sell small electric cars in this country - that´s all we would need. The ones available are still way too expensive to be feasible.

Angelob - great videos of a nice small layout. These vidoes really prove that the size of a layout is absolutely irrelevant to the fun of building and operating it! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Ray - is that one short blast for moving forward and two short blasts for moving backward? That´s what engineers do in Germany, but only when a loco is about to move without a train.

Sir Madog
Ray - is that one short blast for moving forward and two short blasts for moving backward? That´s what engineers do in Germany, but only when a loco is about to move without a train.

Nope this would be according to US Rule Books of the Steam era.  Generally 2 long (– –) for forward and 3 short (ooo) for reverse.  (Basically the same is true of today in most rulebooks if the train is not under radio control for some reason.)

Hello Railfans!

Flo - draft me a double today, im a bit parched. How yall doing? Im feeling a bit under the weather today. Cant seem to get up a good head of steam nor all axles driving today. I figured Id come over here to the hobby side of life. Dont know about yall but trains always make me feel betterer.

Howmus: Its a long explanation as to why but it would be a two short blast whistle call for your train to leave. Even if your loco is facing backwards. Suffice to say, whistle calls denote train movement, not loco facing. Two shorts is all you need. And if you get it wrong, tell them there was a railfan next to the tracks.

Ulrich:  My condolences to you and yours concerning your recent loss. Be not sad, for she is in a far, far better place. Celebrate her life and remember.

Ken: Heres a Beer or two. From the pics the place is looking great! Just remember not to bust your noony too much or you wont have time for trains! You may encroach on other wasteful time slots like taking the kids to the docter, or wife out on marriage anniversary, or grocery shopping.... but never take time away from the trains!

You have to do this Ken, heavens knows I cant live by that motto. Bang Head try as i may.

RideOnRoad: I dont know what road your riding on to be getting that hot (118??) but it sounds like your travelling the "Highway to H**L".  Devil Laugh

I sure hope your coach is A/C'd! Let me know if it gets too bad on yee, I will send you a Peppermint Patty to bite into. Laugh Stay thirsty my friend.

Ferocious Feline of Fargo: Happy belated Birthday wishes to you my friend. May your onion always ring, and your meat never loaf. I wish your turnstiles to always be freewheeling, and your tail never get caught in a closing door during rush hour.

Garry: Going to Michigan aye? Any chance youd be going there on my account to get me some railfan pics? Thats mighty nice of you to do so Garry! Laugh Have a safe trip!

YGW: Hey man you thinking Im joking about my photog skills. You think your laughing now? Heh, wait until you see just how bad! This is why the Mona Lisa only has a frown of a smile. She was all teeth before she saw my pics! Laugh

Theres only one adjective that can be used to describe my world renound photography skills and that is the same as the one used to describe that exact moment when doggie yard smoothies turn white. Laugh

I know folks some of yall are scratching your head thinking this post is speaking of matters days old by now. True, so your not going crazy. I dont get here much so i was reading back in the posts trying to catch up.

Now cought up somewhat, I spose we can move on to some new stuff. Or rather new old stuff. Being some of the first pics ive posted to the forum I thought maybe it was fitting to post photos of "firsts".

EMD GP-38 Control StandThis photo is a picture of the first locomotive I ever operated. It is the control stand to a Southern EMD GP-38. Simple, easy, and friendly I thought for such a complex machine. I was all of 15 at the time this was taken.

EMD SD-40 trio

Here is a photo of the first SD-40 I operated. 3 of them lashed up! To this day I cannot adequatly describe the overwhelming experience it was.

Engineer YarboroughFinally, to the man responsible for my good railroad fortunes. Engineer Yarborough (RIP). Very experienced, very quiet, very kind, and definately a friend of Railfans. It is with saddened heart I think of him, and the railroad he served. Both long gone. (by that photo, you can see i dont have the shutter bug knack!)

As a signing off bonus for you folks, heres one from the hometown. Another heritage road Im sad to see gone. I grew up living next to this line and can still hear the horns blow for crossings at the edge of town. Thats back when my town had an edge, and the EPA hadnt silenced railroads. Take care folks!

 Afternoon Dinners

Flo, bucket of ice and a Beer please.

Got my 4th bid today from Home Depot on the fences. Out of the 4 bids 3 have been around $2600.00, and Lowe's is still the lowest at $1735.00. Jason from Home Depot bad mouth Lowes by saying they all most all wise ask for more money, use criminal's to do the work, (hum, if you cannot get work, most folks would steal) and they will use roofers to install the, but if a roofing job comes up, they will pull them. I would all so find bad reviews about the instillations on line!

Called Mike from Lowe's and he dropped by. I did wonder why 3 of the bids where for $2600.00 and his was only $1735.00? His answer was "This is the time a year when a lot of people want fence's installed, so they charge more, I charge the same rate all the time". Now that I can understand! When a New Hot Car comes out and everyone wants it, the dealer will charge more than there list prices and get it!

Only thing that I did not like is I have to pay the full amount when I sigh the work oder? I sure did not like that! Mike said that is all so the way Home Depot does it. Well I never asked that question to the other people that came out, but is it worth $865.00tp pay when the work is done? I will check with Discover and see what there charge back policy is.

Tree Triming guy, he is out! Never showed up or called.

howmus
So I assume the loco pulls the empties to the mine facing forward at the head of the train. Then uncouples and runs around the train and couples onto the loaded cars on another track, pulls out and couples onto the caboose. After the brake check, the engineer leans out of the cab and gets the signal from the conductor to start the train on the return trip back to the yard. So... The question of the day is: What whistle signal does the engineer give before starting the train???

I would say one say one sounding of the whistel or horn. Reason? Person standing by the caboose would have no idea which way the engine was facing.

Buick Guy Hope you hang around more! Besides the fact I like you (not sure about the Buick part) Whistling I was given a better computer for free but cannot get on line. It still runs XP Pro and I think it is because I need the drivers for the cable modum.

Day off. Did not get Caboose done. I had wasted some time waiting for the guy from Home Depot to come by. Took longer to do the running than I planed, then had the second meeting with Mike. I did get some of the boards painted then the $20.00 Harbout Freight Air Less Spayer died. Not calling it junk yet. While it was working. Yes

 Later Ken

Ulrich my sympathies on your loss.

Checking in so no one would think they have to check the obits.  Not much on the train front.  It's been too windy to drag my layout outside to airbrush the track.  I bought some miscellaneous small parts on ebay and have misplaced them in less than a week.

The weather this week is delightful, in fact even though it was 70 degrees yesterday, the 30 mph made a jacket necessary to catch up on my reading outside.

My friend who passed away, without a will, really did have 2 common law wives and a daughter.  The daughter, 18 was named executor and was stunned to find out there was another wife.  Why two attractive, intelligent and educated women would put up with that arrangement for nearly 40 years is beyond me.

On a happier note I discovered MB Klein aka modeltrainstuff.com has a Youtube channel.  95% of the vids are reviews but they do have some railroad action.

I leave you with Point of Rocks, Maryland

Nice video. The still shots are pretty neat. Especially when you see the different locos from different eras.

Kensounds like the guy from Home Despot is scarred and trying to use the only tool he has because it sounds like he is getting his hat handed to him on pricing.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I'll have a cup of hot decaf and a seat at the Rivet Counter on the chilly late Spring evening...

I asked: "I assume the loco pulls the empties to the mine facing forward at the head of the train. Then uncouples and runs around the train and couples onto the loaded cars on another track, pulls out and couples onto the caboose. After the brake check, the engineer leans out of the cab and gets the signal from the conductor to start the train on the return trip back to the yard. So... The question of the day is: What whistle signal does the engineer give before starting the train???"

Keep in mind that an engine unit, steam or diesel, can be placed anywhere in the train (especially when doing switching duties).  So in the words of the President of the museum I volunteer for and one of the Rules instructors (he is an engineer with CSX in the Rochester, NY, Yard): "The direction of the engine, not the train is used for whistle and hand signals."  There are other specific directions for a push/pull situation or other multi unit situations in new Rules Books.  So....

NORAC Rules 10th. Edition:  Rule 13, "If a train has one engine unit, signals to the Engineer must be given according to the way the unit is headed."  (This rule has been in effect in the US from way back in the 1800's.)  Therefore based on the fact that I said Steam Locomotive (singular), and the train would be headed Tender first on the Locomotive, the Engineer should sound 3 short blasts to move the train as the loco is moving in reverse.

It can get a lot more complicated than this when there are more than one engine on the train.  Often the situation must be made clear by the Conductor during the Safety meeting before anyone gets on train.  (That is a point the Conductor of the LA&L which does our Empire State Express Excursions makes very clear in the Safety Meeting as they are using a push/pull combination with the engineer moving to the other cab for the ride back.)

You guys did better than the folks across the street BTW.  This is something, depending on the road and the time period that can be added to operating sessions if you have sound.  Oh and today most all of this is handled via radio so the trains seldom actually use the whistle/horn to start and stop the trains.  The only whistle/horn signals you generally hear are the grade crossing (– – o –) and the "get off the ROW you idiot!" (o o o o o o o o o o )

Have a great night everyone!

I would say one say one sounding of the whistel or horn. Reason? Person standing by the caboose would have no idea which way the engine was facing.

LOL, I just have to answer this one seperately.........  First off all crew had darn well better know which way the engine is facing!!!  That is part of your job.  Period!  Anyone who is standing by the caboose and not part of the crew is trespassing (unless we are boarding or letting people off the train.  They are ushered away from the train immediately!).  Should be hauled off the property by the RR Police..... WhistlingLaugh  Seriously, the conductor and others on crew always...  Repeat... Always check to make sure no one is anywhere near the fouling point of the train before any signals are given to the engineer!  (Almost kinda glad you said that Ken as safety is always Job #1.)

73

[edit] Ken, please know this was not meant to be a put down, nor am I laughing at your answer!  Most hobbyists have little knowledge of how railroads actually operated over the years and your answer just pointed out a very important thing.  Crew have to be always aware of where everyone is at all times around the train, and it is everyones job to keep each other and the public safe.  Last year, out at the museum, one of the conductors not once, but two times in one day, had to stop the train, get off the caboose and walk down the track to tell one of our members to get his butt away from the right of way so the train could proceed.  The second time he did this the member gave him a hard time, informing him he was a member so he could be near the track.  He was told in very plain terms that if he didn't move, he would be removed from the property by the police who he was about to call and have him charged with treaspassing!  He moved!

Gidday Chloe, just a mug of Pussers Kye please. It’s been a very wet and damp but not too cold Friday.
YGW, Davesright, Navy Squirt was an Over proof Jamaican dark rum, a tot (4.8 US fluid ounces) last issued daily in 1990 to Royal New Zealand Navy sailors. In the late 70s I worked for a retired Naval Officer who had occasional access to the genuine article. Imbibed with too much enthusiasm it would quickly set you on your ear, I treated it with respect. Pussers kye is a hot drink made from dark chocolate, evaporated milk, sugar, water and rum, it was apparently a  very good pick-me-up and warmer for lookouts on watch in during storms in the North Atlantic.

Lunch Time Dinner

Hmm where did everyone go ? Did the Rapture happen and I miss it ? Miss the train ? Well it is a BEAUTIFUL day in Northern Virginia, Blue skies, small white puffy clouds, Low humidity, Temps in teh 80s - I know where everyone is eating lunch outside !

JaBear - Hmm That seems strange giving military personnel alchol. Why would they do that if they are in charge of massive machines of war made to obliberate other ships and coastal defenses ? I can see it now -Tongue in cheek mind you -  Okay mates after our daily squirt I feeling like shooting a few rounds at that ....I remember in my youth some of the guys I went to school with. Once he had a drink or two he was ten feet tall and bullet proof ! I distinctly remember one night it took three of us to drag our friend out of teh party when he had drank to much ( he always drank to much and wanted to fight someone ) and wanted to fight a couple of guys . We were all so annoyed with him we didnt go the next time with him. He got his butt whooped !

Dave - Good job ! What a piece of trivia to know !

Howmus - That is very interesting. So when a person has not paid for a ride and either its not time to board or they do not have a ticket they are trespassing ? What is a fouling point ? One of teh things I do when I have a "preconstruction meeting" with new buyers is I tell them this : Stay out of MY house. It is not yours until you settle. On some homes I have put up no tresspassing signs to worn them when they ignore us !

Ulrich you okay ?

Will check back in later.....

Hello? Hello - ho!

(No reply)

Didn´t I just see Ray sneaking out of this place through the back door ?

Well, YGW just came in - hi there!

Good Evening!

It´s been a somewhat busy day. Prepared the Swiss layout to be ready for the final wiring job. My friend Lothar (the electrician) will come over tomorrow to help me get that done. When that´s finished, there are still a number of things to be done before I can call it finished - like adding grass with that old electrostatic applicator of mine, more bushes, some more trees, little details along the track and on the platform, the catenary (sigh) and finally, the layout lighting. It´ll take some time, certainly with long breaks in between, which I will fill with w*rking on the Z scale layout.

Thanks, folks, for all the kind words on the passing of Aunt Bobby. Actually, death was a blessing for her. She was trapped in a body which did not work at all, couldn´t even move her eyes. We are just so sad we can´t be with the family.

I spent some time w*rking on a layout plan for emdmike. I think I´ll be able to finish it on Sunday, hoping it´ll be of use for him.

YGW - I remember when we built our beautiful house in the way houses have been built for centuries, the building site proved to be a favourite spot for a Sunday afternoon walk in our town. Signs would not keep the folks off my property. Some of them even shoved us aside to get into the house. More than once I had to call the police to have them removed.

Janie, supper is up now any moment, so I´ll go for a quick Beer, please.

So when a person has not paid for a ride and either its not time to board or they do not have a ticket they are trespassing ?

Any person who is in an "off Limits" area without Proper Authority is technically trespassing  (That would include our members who should know better).  That includes being inside the ROW of the track at any time (again without "Proper Authority").  We have the entrance to the loading areas roped off and someone is  watching the area for our guests.  Anyone working as a volunteer does have "Proper Authority" to be inside Those spots generally, but not always.  If the area say's "Keep Out" it means exactly that unless you have been given "Proper Authority" to be in there.  If you have not entered through the ticket office and have a valid pass, yes you are trespassing on the property.  (This does not apply to Stations that are open to the public such as most areas with Amtrack, etc.)

"NORAC 10th. edition, Personal Timetable, Rule B: Employees (volunteers for us) must be familiar with all rules and special instructions that relate to their duties.   If in doubt as to the meaning or application of a rule or special instructions, an employee (volunteer) must request an explaination from the Proper Authority."  In the case I cited, Proper Authority was the Conductor of the train.  He was told to move off the ROW and he refused.  Therefore legally he was trespassing (that applies to both our members and the public).

yougottawanta
What is a fouling point ?

"Fouling point
The point of a switch turnout where a car or locomotive on one track will obstruct movement on the adjacent track"  Also generally used being inside the ROW of the track without "Proper Authority"
Gotta go feed the cats!

Good Morning Everyone!!

Happy Friday!! Big Smile

Beautiful sunshine here in Southern California!

I've Been cleaning up around the house, My Mom and Sister are in Europe for 12 days so Dad and I have the house to ourselves.

We're going to an Angel Game Later,  I'm keeping my fingers the Angels win!!

Been surfing around on the web looking for different pictures of trains to add to my railroad libeary in file explorer.

I have 10 folders, but only 3 are full.

I am still working on folders 2 and folders 5.

I have seen various pics of streamliners with a blank car end, marker lamps and diaphram instead of an observation.

Saw a couple of Metrolink trains yesterday with BNSF C44-CW's in the phase 3 scheme.

The C44-CW sure are slow pulling those commuter trains.

YGW, thanks for the invite! Sure is homey in here. First time here, you know.

Oh yes, I'll just have a coffee. Just got out of a lengthy meeting with the BOD of the TEC RR. Seems they want to move the main offices from West Sandusky to Troubridge. Don't know if I like that idea, but that's where all the interchange traffic comes in from the Chessie and the EL. The parking's quite crowded at troubridge, often have to park across the tracks to get a spot. That depot at Troubridge is bigger, but not as nice inside as at W. Sandusky.

Oh well, gotta go. My turn on the Brewery switch job.

I thought the conductor rain the train ?

Well he does "run" the train in that all directions and orders to the crew come from the Conductor.  One of the big duties of the conductor is to make sure the train has a safe run from point to point.  That includes a check before the train is given permission to move by looking down the ROW on both sides to be sure no one is where they are in danger (ie.- fouling the track).  Generally the Car Host on the back caboose and the engineer also check the area for any obstuction or danger.  The train cannot move unless the train crew and any one else, the track, the ROW, and the area near the ROW are all safe!!!  Again the Conductor is the "Proper Authority" on the train.  It is the conductor that everyone else ultimately gets their orders from.  The Conductor gets Proper Authority from the Dispatcher, the yard superintendent when appropriate, and the Personal Timetable/Rule Book modified by Bulletin Orders, etc.  It is much more complicated than watching an HO Scale locomotive pulling some cars run around and around on a layout.....

One "Bulletin Order" we have in effect now is that the conductor does not give the order to move the train until the car hosts on the cabooses he is not on have checked in that they are all set.  We started doing that about a year and a half ago after a couple of close calls with guests on the caboose I work.  That is an example of how the rule book and Personal Timetable get modified to fit the situation.

Howdy ...

I'm spending too much time on the Interstate Highways. ... I just got back from AL and am about to leave for a quick trip to MI. It will be another trip in MI where i won't have time for fun stuff like visiting with Duke.

I hope I can slow down soon and get back to model railroading.

Cheers

 Evening Dinners

Flo, 2 Beer, leave one in the bottle, I will shuff that one in my pants!

Work / Bake Front. Out of the store 5 A/C units only 2 work, yes the owner is cheap. If you leave the two set at 72 degrees over night the store stays some what cool all day. When it gets hot, Nancy will call and tell the person working to turn the A/C to 85 before they leave. Dave and I knew better and would leave the A/C set to 72. But, Jerry worked yesterday and he turned them up to 85.

When I got to the store it was 82 degrees, turned on the A/C and the lowest it got was 79, and was back up to 81 by 4:00 PM and stayed there till I left at 8:00 PM. I all so drove the car that the A/C does not work too work. I will be getting it re-charged in short order!

When I was in the Military I had Heat Stoke while I was on the pistol range. After that I was OK with 90 to 95 degrees, but higher was a diffrent story. Now at 60 and over weight I can deal with 90 for a few minutes, then I need get some places cool. Working out side at 85 degrees I am good for 15 to 30 minutes. Sitting all day at 80 degrees, just kicked my caboose!

I have had the A/C on for a hour and a half in the garage / train room and it is still warm.

RAY, I am going to tell Steve you are picking on me! I did know you where kidding.

I am BBB, Broke, Baked and Beat.

As a newbie here (yougottawanta gave me an invite), I find this quite an interesting place and as a result I would like something quite interesting to snack on: an orange soda float with chocolate ice cream if that can be done. (Gives a chocolate orange flavor like the candy that comes out at Christmas time.)

Given I'm new I better introduce myself a little bit. I'm a bred, born and raised Montana kid. I am a fan of the old Northern Pacific even thought I never had the opportunity to see it in action. (The BN merger predated me by a few years.) I ended up an NP fan given that my late maternal grandfather worked for the NP. Miles City happens to be on the old NP (now BNSF) mainline so I get to see trains quite frequently. My Mom has told me that as a four year old I would want her to stop under the underpass where the train runs so that I could listen to it. So as you might expect, I've been a train person for as long as I could remember.

I'm one of those people that can have 4-5 projects going on at once. Currently I am working on a sanding complex with a structure for unloading snad to keep it dry and a sand tower built from an old hopper car, couplers for a BN GP35, a BN GP30, BN 1976 (which is a bicentennial scheme SDP40) and working on a fueling track area on my layout. (I'm ADHD which contributes to the problem of having many things going at once.)

My layout is a freelanced mid-70s to early 80s (ACI era. I find I hate the labels but they are a needed evil). The idea is that the BN decided to lease out the ex-NP lines similar to how Montana Rail Link was formed. The railroad uses GP20s for road engines, an SW1000 for hot shots and a couple of SW7s for yard work. (The logo is my avatar and my forum name comes from the railroad name. [Forest Railway -  FRRY])

BN still runs though with a couple of GP18s (including one in NP paint) for general freight, GP35s and the GP30 for coal.
